In this video we address a customer complaint of "No Heat!?" There are lots of variables when addressing this complaint. Some of those variables include but are not limited to, is it full of coolant, does the thermostat work, is the heater core plugged, what is the ambient air temperature, does the customer "warm up" the vehicle, does the vehicle have front and rear heat, are the temp and mode doors working correctly and so on. When you are flushing out the heater core with the air/water hose, into the heater hoses are you also flushing out the rear heater core too, at the same time? Or are there different hoses for the rear heater core?
Modern fuel injection is pretty trick. Creating a rich area in an otherwise lean cylinder to get a faster warm-up. I warm mine up if it hits single digits. At least for 10 minutes or so to give it a head start. My drive to work is about 20 minutes.
A little side story. I’m a marine tech. Using a 4 stroke outboard as an example, this isn’t about warming up before you start moving, but just about warming up. In Michigan the boating season is shorter. In terms of hours it’s estimated people on average use their boat 40-50 hours a year. We have about 4-5 customers a year that bring their motor to us and say, my oil level is about double. (Good they check, most boat owners just turn key and run) If the 4 strokes are not warming up because the thermostat is not closing, they run so cold with the cold or cooler water on a lot of lakes, they make a lot condensation. It’s as I said earlier it starts ‘making’ oil. And this is with ‘only’ with about the on average of 40 hours mentioned earlier. We are talking about depending on size of motor any where from a quart to a gal of water! I know the marine side is a little different, but it’s just more proof a motor should be running hot for peck performance. And agreed wholeheartedly about warm up. In winter I just pre start my auto to let the idle settle down, then start moving slower until it warms up and don’t turn heater on until a little warm, because like you said the heater core is a radiator and robs heat from motor. Had a 1968 ford pick up that would melt six inches of snow ❄️ off of the hood and top of cab in about 30 minutes after starting. Just had to let it warm up.
My owners manual states to warm up the car for 3 minutes at least before taking off. Winter or summer. The heater also takes about 20 minutes to kick in. My cabin filter may need to be swapped out. I've noticed that fords from the early 2000s generally have really good air coming out of the vents and the heater and ac kick in in under 5 minutes. Not sure if they've made it less effective in newer models but seeing the temperature in that area on that day, I'd say that's pretty normal. There's only so much that the heater would be able to do when the temperature outside is that low.
I used to work on a Nissan Dealership in Canada, I have a complaint from the customer about some 4 cylinder model Altima not getting enough heat at idle speed. What I do and did work is using our Consult scanner tool and I rise the base idle up 50 to 100 rpm, this brings more circulation of the coolant and did give out more heat !.
The warm up debate is moot in the rust belt states. You can freeze your butt off, or warm it up. The really minor engine wear (if any) isn't going to change the life of the car or cause maintenance cost. In South Main territory you can just about stand back and watch the cars rot from the bottom up in real time – the minor engine wear from warm ups is not what will end the life of the car.
We live in Toronto, and when I travel up north 3 or 4 hundred clicks, they have 110 volt outlets on posts in parking lots all over. As well big rigs and buses just run all the time.

The cardboard left over from that new washing machine comes in handy when cut to fit and placed over the radiator. Funny how the temp gauge even with the cardboard over the radiator stays in the safe zone when its 20 below and your nice and warm inside the vehicle.
I've been hearing a lot on condensation issues lately, son is having this issue with his 3.5 colorado.
Why is it there was never issues with this in my day? Just how long does one need to run an engine to avoid this? If there is condensation from it running where does that moisture go if it's in a somewhat enclosed system, thru the blow by or PCV?
Any car I drive here in the fridged northwest Midwest, start the car, fan setting on 1, wait for high idle to come down (depending on how cold, 30 second to a mintue or two, take it easy driving for few miles, good to go
i would have definitely replaced the thermostat …. another $35 ….
If I remove the snow my Honda CR-V defrosts the glass in 10 minutes and off I go. That’s around -10C
My 2006 dodge grand caravan had no heat. Found out the radiator was 2 gallons short on coolant. Filled it up and FIXED
I always warm up vehicles. It is good for the engine to warm up and people who say otherwise probably have a vehicle in warranty so how would they even know. Transmission thanks you for warming up as well.

So true about small engines taking time to get hot – when I first changed the coolant in my little Honda, it took nigh on an hour of idling before the radiator fan came on while bleeding the air out. Next time I'll rev it some!
Old school check is to take radiator cap off then start car wait few minutes check fluid should be flowing and put your palm over radiator it should have a slight suction on the palm of your hand. No flow means stuck thermostat and if no suction means bad water pump. Then if there is a sweet smell in car means bad heater core

Once the temps here drop into the 30's and below I become the manual remote start, and I warm up my wife and my car. This way you have a nice warm car and you don't have to scrape the windows.

I noticed, in many states.. it's illegal to leave your car unattended while running.
Old English dinosaur assist. If on short runs I slide a flat piece of cardboard in front of the radiator to act like an old CMP truck radiator blanket. Just remember to remove if going on a long run. Works for a poor peasant like me.

Hi Eric, I had one once that would open at the correct temperature but would take ages to close. i.e the differential was huge. I only found this by putting it in the boiling water test. The engine would warm quick but then drop and drop until it finally closed.
the fix is drive a toyota car mine is hot in 5 minutes while people at work with pickups and suvs are freezing
wow chilly up there in new york you must be pretty far upstate we are down in middle of east edge of Pennsylvania and it rarely gets below 10 degrees out maybe a few nights in middle of winter it gets to single digits
Just sell the customer a block heater and call it a day.

When I serviced school buses in Alaska the diesels would never warm up even with the cooling air blocked off. We had to keep them in the bus barn which was at least 40 degrees warmer than out side. Most of the buses had to be warmed up at least ten minutes before they could be driven what with pumping up air and warming up the steering fluid. I had to disconnect the P/S coolers to keep the hoses from blowing in the subzero weather.
We also used block heaters.
Down here on the Alabama coast we have to cool down our cars for about 10 months out of the year.
Our "winter" is about 3 weeks long.

lol. i lived in florida, I had an 87 Chevy Astro van with a V8 swapped in it. it was completely stripped out inside, i had no vents for defrost or anything. I took off the doghouse cover to the engine and used the engine as heat in cold days. ah the good days
