In this video we have a look at a Ford Explorer Sport Trac that was dragged in with a crank, no start. It is obvious this truck has been having a problem for longer than just a week once we "see" what the problem is! The infamous 4.0 crank pulley (harmonic balancer) separation that takes out the crank shaft sensor. We also get to take a little trip to the Auto Zone! -Enjoy!

yes crank sensor should be alive while cranking, and fuel disable should say no. im working on a mustang 4.0 2006, i have spark, crank reading, injector pulse, scan tool shows 50 psi of fuel pressure, compression around 110 psi, but wont start, not even with starting fluid or starting fluid applied into intake.
Remember, that engine is a hybrid of a German 2.8 turned 2.9, turned 4 leaker, then lightened up and crammed full of all kinds of pitas.
Ford did that.
The customer was lucky to find someone around on a late Saturday to do all you did or tried to do.
The third guy at the parts place left when he stops getting paid, and he used you to try and train Beavis and Butt-Head.
If you could do it over, you might get them a rental car for their Exploder and just visually inspect and diagnose.
The best parts to fix a Ford are the updated parts from Ford.
But you are of a special breed and gave up your Saturday for the right to make it run anyway.
The customer found a good man. He finishes last, learns the greater amount of knowledge, and tried to network any day of the week or hours he can use to accomplish getting that customer a running vehicle.
That's not taught, except to the most tenacious and dedicated people who can cut to the quick.
They should be compensated well for sacrificing their time and relationships.
But, then, Mrs O knows too, you can pick another day to spend with her when things calm down and you trust someone to run your shop as you would.
I work 7 days a week.
I worked for auto zone you nailed it
I definitely would have indeed had a few choice words !!
Thank You. I now know what is wrong with my car. I too have a second pully.
Cobain was actually a fantastic guitar player.(watch"man who sold the world, live").
Saddity is auto fixins cuz rest of week is fer werkin.
Ya should o used a air nozzle n blew all the leaves out of the radiator and the belt dust n wiped everything down. That's what a true professional would do.
Another great job we all make mistakes you sure beat yourself up a lot about something you ended up fixing anyhow ๐
Thanks for another great video
Hey Eric you think that a Auto Zone harmonic balancer can cause a misfire in the engine and particularly on only one cylinder? Because after i replaced mine i am getting a P0301 but only on the highway on the cruse control at 2500rpm and did not have any problems before the balancer replacement.
thank you really appreciate it
Lol, you, ray and Ford boss…all with a bad day! Lol
The only thing that works for serpentine belt squeaks is a dab a Dielectric grease
the fact that u made a red green reference…made finding ur channel all the more amusing =D thank u lol
Your video was so understandable, both visually and verbally that I watched it all the way through. It ended up not having anything to do with the problem I am having but your quality was so good I watched it just to learn. Do me a favor, get an Explorer and fix everything that can possibly go wrong with it, maybe you will hit on the problem I am having.
Disrespectful
Need my damn father
THOUGHT I WAS PLAYING
That's why I say loyalty kids first then grown because I'm not going to be Michael Jackson
Eric , i think that i'm fairly mechanical minded , but i wish i had 1/1000 th of your skills .. You're the man in my book!!
Man… Dont be so hard on yourself….!! Everyone makes mistakes, especially when the obvious slaps us across our face…!! No one thinks any less of you. You are the man…!!
What town u in? I was born in cortland,ny
Made the exact same mistake on the diagnosis
Hey at least you found it. The Problem..
really good video
Wow great job
Never met a perfect person. But have met a few that thought they were. Love that you are human like most of us! Merry Christmas!
Crap happens!
Nobody is perfect. Everyone is not perfect and if they say they are they are liars. Keep on doing what you are doing even at your worst day your alot better then many so called mechanic. So keep up the good work
I lean sheet of cardboard 2ft x2ft against radiator core to prevent accidental damage
We all make mistakes. I overlooked a lot of things in my years the dual pulley thing was found on a lot of older cars so yeah I could see overlooking that. A dormant set of grooves never set off alarms while I did inspection. But I did take note
Dude why did I click thumbs down on this? Over 3yrs ago now??? Lolz how the hell? Eric must done something wrong ๐ ๐ฌ๐๐
Love the Lil indinos when you say stuff like " first try " lol
Lol I felt ur pain man , you expect halfway decent level headed dweebs but nooo being Sat takes the youth a month to get over realizing they can't keep their new yrs resolution and get tunnel visioned becoming spoonfed perma rookies who never was allowed to play in neighborhood sandbox with rest the kids growing up…. I felt ur pain like that honda ridgeline thing where you felt the pain of guys workin on that with all loose parts lol . Were to much alike lol
I give you the thumbs up I enjoyed watching the video
Put some cardboard next to radiator
This happened to me yesterday afternoon. It was the first link the came up in google search. I am fixing the issue without any questions and concerns. I am now subscribed and look forward to having you help with future auto issues. Thank you
That was fun.havent thought bout theEX for a bit (:
Excellent job, you got it done. ๐๐๐
Had the same problem on my Explorer last year. I went to change the belt and discovered that I had an extra pulley.
Same thing just happened to my wifeโs mustang with the 4.0 v6. after 214,000 miles. The Pulley jumped back, and the belt cut a new groove in the balancer. When this happened, the car immediately died in the middle of the road.
Absolutely love watching you Eric!!
I used to work for Genesee Carquest in Batavia, NY. Also worked for an independent chain called Hutchin's Auto Parts, out of Buffalo. This was way back, in 1999-2002. I live west coast now, out in Washington and work for O'Reilly Auto Parts. It amazes me just how ignorant some counter guys are. I'm a delivery driver now, and get to hear all the horror stories like the one you told about Auto Zone. Our local Auto Zone is a joke and I'm not saying that out of bias. Most all the shops in my little city won't do business with them because they don't know what they're doing.
Oh..Oh..Oh..O'Reilly……Auto Parts…..YOWWWW!
Oh, and giving the 'ol Tundra the beans on the get on ramp! That was pretty cool! She sounds mean!
Don't be so hard on yourself we all make mistakes and from a lot of the videos I watch of yours, you are constantly fixing others mistakes
Greatest rant of all time………..Sure glad you decided to upload this one.
Had the same experience at Auto Bone , but you described the experience much better!
I'd be more embarrassed to replace the alternator and put the wrong belt. But if they went to the AutoZone you went to earlier in the video for them to get the alternator I wouldn't put it past them to give them a shorter belt.
I stopped going to AutoZone after I went to get a starter warranted and was told the warranty was void because there was oil on the starter. It was not like a greasy mess just some light oil from being sprayed for winter. I was stranded at the gas station across the street when it stopped working.
