with the history of Champion. Why would any one install Champion plugs in their car or truck. i have witnessed first hand the failure of brand new Champion plugs multiple times and would tell every one. don't use them. you may be forced to use them in your lawn mower because that is all they have on the shelf….but "Never" " Never" put them in your means of transportation if you don't want to get stranded.

Eric, In the 70's I put a new set of wires into my 1967 mustang, yellow special set. Was not to long when they began to fail. I research I found they failed where they flexed. I figured out that there was carbon in fiberglass strands, and where they flexed the carbon migrated away. Since then I have used the wire wound resistance plug wires. Thanks for the great video, I enjoy your type of logic diagnostic.
I just watched this 5 year old video. I specialized in tune up, driveablility and computerized engine controls back in the 80's and early 90's. This type of scope pattern was the norm for me back then. I enjoy watching the current videos with the new diagnostic procedures but still get a little nostalgic for the good old days. This video was a fun little trip down memory lane and I knew it was a plug wire as soon as I saw high firing line. (could have been something else but most commonly was always the wire) I also noticed after the wire repair that the spark line was slanted slightly higher than the rest. Could have been the dirty plug from the misfire or the cylinder being fuel washed or something similar along those lines. Good simple fix. Nice job. Fits right in with my first 2 rules of diagnosis. #1: Is it plugged in? #2: Is it plugged in correctly?

302 firing order: 1 5 4 2 6 3 7 8. 351 W firing order: 1 3 7 2 6 5 4 8
Wrong firing order for a 302. The one your looking at is a Windsor firing order. 4 cylinders are in a different order 0n the 302 and the 351 W.

I have 4.6 explorer 04 shaking at idle & take off my little obdi scanner shows cylinder 1 misfire . I replace the all 8 plugs & cyl1 coil but now shaking less then before but problem still exists thanks
Reminds me of my early days at Sears watching the old school guys with a Sun Machine. Most guys were done after you said OBD I and no CEL. Good old fashioned diagnostics. Good job!!!
It was good to see you working on a pre OBDII vehicle. I had a Snap-On ignition scope , I think model MT6500. It wasn't a 'live' scope it was digital so the pattern would be delayed probably by a few miliseconds . Sometimes that would be enough to make diagnosing difficult. I still own my Snap-On 'brick' scanner for old times sake. lol

How does the scope pick up the pulse signals for all the other cylinders when it was only hooked up to cylinder 1 and the coil? I would have thought that it would need to be hooked up to all of them if you had an 8 channel scope. I'm not a mechanic, I am just trying to learn and be a better shade tree tech. Waite I think I figured it out…the pickup in cylinder 1 is the trigger and the other pickup to the center terminal of the coil picks up the voltage sent to each plug as it turns allowing you to look for abnormalities. Dude you are good.!!! I learn a lot from you and Scanner Danner.

Hard to believe you only got 434K subscribers, deserve way more. Wish you worked near me, you would be my first choice for everything from lubing the ash tray to complete engine replacement. My buddies boat was missing when we were out on Lake Erie, turned out to be a broken spark plug wire, right in the middle, we connected the break in the wire with a paper clip, taped it up and it ran good the rest of the week. 3 years later the cheap b*stard still was using our paper clip fix.
I know that Ford trucks of that era had problems with the hood latch. I spent two days trying to get one open once.
I just want you to ask if you know how to acquire a data base. or maybe a personal list or how to make with Oscilloscope a Synchronized CKP+CMP signal.
my 5 litre f-150 misfires #8. I took it in and they told me it could be burnt valves if new spark plugs don't work. engine light goes on for a week then off for a week. * new plugs and $600 later still have engine light. going to buy a new wire with ends and replace that myself. see what happens. great video, thanks. don't know how to get back to this video if I need to get back on here if you reply.
Typically, when a wire fails like this, in my experience, the wire become quite hard and brittle from internal arching. Working from one end to the other, bend the wire at a 90° angle and move the bend until you find the stiff spot… (Quite frequently in the end as you were hinting towards)
Love your videos & how informative you make them.. I'm having a problem I've never seen or heard of & is unbelievability hard to even admit but here goes… My 97' F-150 4×4 with 4.6L has been problem free for 210k with exception of a GEM module messing with a few things intermittently a while back (at about 185k mi) but now I'm getting a misfire in cylinder 3 pretty regular now & I've checked the coil packs they're showing good, same with the plug wires so naturally I moved on to the plugs & here's the hard to admit part… I CAN'T NOT GET THE PLUGS OUT OF CYLINDER 3 OR 4!? I have spent literally a full day in total just on getting those 2 plugs out I'm at a loss? Can't see directly into those 2 holes but can't see any obstruction with a light & mirror that would could or should stop the plug socket from seating around the plug to turn it but for some reason it just will not grip the plugs so I can get them out? You ever have anything like this or have any suggestions for. Solving the stubborn or invisible obstructions?

it is far cheaper to replace your own wires that go to a shop, that being said. some cars it takes forever like my 99 avenger where you have to take off the intake. weigh your time vs. cost. i woulda threw 35 bucks for new wires at that truck and took my chances after testing each wire with a timing light. i hope would. but after that if your not comfortable, go to a decent shop if you can find one. they are very hard to find.
0.44 is standard ford back in the 80's, 90's who knows. hope that hood matches the engine.
diagnosing correctly is the main priority as a shop mechanic/owner. it's a 50/50 shot of guessing right without diagnosing on this. he spent more time, but less parts. in all honesty he's just an honest mechanic. The book time on this diagnosis alone is probably 1.5h, plus the repair, another .5. He may charge 2 hours. but at least he spent and hour doing the job instead of 15 minutes like some shops do. and he makes sure its correct unlike others. either way your paying for 2 hours of work, and if you don't know that, well, i'm sorry. infact he may charge less because he didn't spend that much time on it. so let him do his thing. i this video he is spending extra time showing you how he diagnosis. that takes extra time explaining and moving the camera around.
i had a 87 ford with the 300/6 and i replaced the plugs, ran for a day. dist was bad, replaced dist. , wouldn't run, new plugs again, ran for years after. how does a new dist blow plugs? i was never more confused.
you have to appreciate working on them old dogs, much easier at times at the same book rate lol.
I know OBDII was required by 96, just curious if you know how many makes waited that long. I bought a scanner with all the adapters because my 94 camry had the round plug i wasnt familiar with. Later to find out it had OBDII connector hidden away as well, so thats all I've ever used. OBDI i did the jumper wire, money light flash. I should try that round connector and see if i see anything extra being i suspect the other connector is PRE OBDII spec and may fall short. although at 300 thousand miles, still no issues. Even Scotty doesn't recommend a toyota with that many miles as a daily driver and it's been mine for 7 years. Never left me hanging.
If that #6 wire wasn't properly snapped on to the plug initially, it would have had excessive KVs from the start. That would have broke down the resistor in the wire.
Problem with most aftermarket plugs is that they are not necessarily gapped correctly. Most techs just screw new ones in without checking… I always check!
