Tearing down the whole front end and bottom end of the truck to change the timing chain. Hmmm! Kind of makes you wonder what those engineers were thinking.
I think the guides being worn are part of it.
What kind if fish has 2 knees? Tuknee fish
Cool
removing the timing cover air hammer chisel head net to dowel peg be gentle works well
16 plus mm does seem like alot vs the 14 to 15mm of spec especially could throw it off with the amount of slop it has by hand plus the chain slop they both could be the whole problem Eric O @SouthMainAutoRepairLLC
5+ year video, 504 comments, I am sure somebody has mentioned…..REO Speedwagon…you can tuna a piano but you cannot tuna fish. And the album cover had a tuna fish with a tuning fork coming out of its mouth. Your daily job creates worthwhile videos for those of us who prefer to do our own repairs. Many thanks
Getting ready to do one tomorrow I'm starting to rethink my life choices and career.
The timming chain is much easer to change on the 350 v8, seldom needed changed too.
Sorry Eric o wouldn't buy one for $50 . Thanks GM again!!!!!!!
All the engineers care about is getting past 36 months or 36000 miles. After that there is no warranty and don’t care how long it takes to fix their screw up half measures and lack of foresight.
Timing chain cover, youve got more patience than I do. Good job
The debut of “Big Nasty”!? What!! Just started watching your channel and going back through the archives. Cool to see the beginning of SMA.
That's an reo speedwagon album
As being a mechanic/technician I believe an engineer caught a mechanic sleeping with his wife and then therefore started to design vehicles to the point of driving every mechanic insane
Lol the age old dilemma the best thing to do is replace all gearing and sliders and chain
I think that all engineers should have a minimum of 6 years practical mechanics on automobiles and trucks and diesel car and trucks as well before becoming engineers
I wonder if it would be easier to pull the motor, especially on a 4×4 model.
you had it easy i had to do the mains, rods and rings in the 4wheel version with no lift and all hand tools and it turned out the number 3 on the crank was an egg needed a new crank should have just swapped the engine
That joke was the name of a 1978 REO Speedwagon album.
They engineer them to be put together fast using the least amount of labor. The engineer that designed the engine probably doesn’t even speak English. Value engineered using minimum required materials.
Right in the @&$£#+$ oil, wouldn’t cha know it?
First time I ever heard you curse! It’s fine , I would have cursed a blue streak long before that!
Engineers are also accountants and designed it as intended so that you touch as much stuff as possible for even the most erroneous task in the hopes a breaking something or everything so that in the end, sell more chinesium parts.
I cannot tell you how much I appreciate this series of videos. My son and I just finished a 2009 Chevy Colorado 2.9 liter with the same issue. I know this is several years past by now but your efforts to make this video and lead the rest of us through this labyrinthine of engeering buffoonery lives on.
We solved the issue following your vids.
Thanks
No Eric!!!
Fuck those engineers!!!
I am a member the short attention span generation.
In other words, f that job.😜
What the heck was chevy thinking. They probably let some genius design that system.
HOLY SHITSKY Eric!!!!
I don’t know why you took this job in. No wonder nobody knows what the wave form looks like. It’s too costly on the mechanics. And that’s the only ones that would care about that.🥴
Too many jobs like these would Friggen bankrupt a shop lol!!!!!!
The one thing that terrifies me in all these videos, is how on earth does anyone know where all the bolts, washers, clips, etc go when you dismantle so much. Surely it can't all me memory. I would be having a million photos and a mountain of clearly marked envelopes
You're right, you should have pulled the engine.
Second time watching 5/23/2020
Big nasty!
Loved the cam holding tool!!! Actually loved the whole series. regards vic
Hey, when I saw you pull the timing cover off, just hit me that engine is a VVT design. Did you think of changing the VVT module on the right camshaft? It varies the valve timing. Maybe the chain wasn't stretched that much. Just a thought. My 04 Rolla is VVT is why I thought of that.
Absolute garbage. No wonder Toyota dominates the mid-sized truck market.
I can rebuild a old big block even a small block, give me one of these new cars and I would rather pull the motor, and put a new one in it's place than to sit and fiddle with the front housing like Eric did 🤬 heck with that!
Reo Speedwagon you can tune a piano but you can't tuna fish
This Colorado reminds me of an old FORD PICKUP TRUCK I ONCE HAD. They used epoxy instead of silicon gasket cement. EVERYTHING WAS IMPOSSIBLE TO JUST SEPARATE, CLEAN AND REPLACE PARTS. I blew a (PLASTIC) timing chain, had to tow the vehicle 10 miles before I could even work on the truck, not to mention ungluing everything important. A one day job turned into three, my only saving grace, my friend had a SNAP ON TOOL TRUCK IN HIS DRIVEWAY and was a 20 yr mechanic working for a dealership.
Yeah, glad I watched this before buying a Colorado. No user serviceable parts inside.
At what point do you say the labor to fix the vehicle exceeds it's value
Hello this is a great video I was wonder where you got the Cam actuator sprocket because GM does not make it any more, thank you
First appearance of big nasty!
To add washer fluid; remove rear tire, brakes, spare tire, etc……
