Come along with myself and Ivan as we chase down the cause of a P0171 on this 98 Dodge Dakota and figure out why it is running so lean. This video is a little different than I normally do but I think you will enjoy it all the same.

Or the cat fucked them up

  2. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Chad Martin says:

I really think the back one was bad well before the old one and still ran. I have seen this before. Especially if the front one was black as hell

  3. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Chad Martin says:

I have seen the down stream quit and no one did anything about it. So that leaves the front left and went bad like a year later

I feel sorry for that guy's truck that is. But now that you know that the O2s were bad and the cat is bad. And it was mentioned a possible oil change because it got flooded. What about the other things that you guys failed to mention? Like putting some cleaner in it before you change the parts to blow all the carbon out of the engine. And not only will it need an oil change but the spark plugs they're all going to be black. So at the end of the day you going to have to do a clean, a spark plug change, an oil change, a cat replace along with an initial issue of the O2 sensors. I know that's an expensive hit but I wouldn't skip the clean cuz it is going to be chock full of carbon and when you do a clean you usually have to replace everything downstream anyway so this would be the perfect time to do it before you replace parts. Just as long as it's not too dirty because carbon when breaking up can affect your valve train and get stuck in places. So maybe borescope camera take a look down one of these spark plugs check the piston and the valves. Because it would be a shame to do a solid and wind up causing more of an issue.

This is 2015. I've just watched part one of Ivan on a road trip 2022. I've just one question does Ivan have a Picture of Dorian Gray in his attic because I swear he hasn't aged a day in 7 years!!! I really enjoyed the collaborative video and it's great to see the two experts at work together. Buying out Radio Shack was ingenious. Way to go Ivan. Don't know when I'll need it, but it will come in handy one day. Fantastic video, I learned a lot. Just great to see you bounce off each other.

    Question for someone.
    I have a 2001 Dodge Dakota 3.9L . And the
PVC valve is rattling making a lot of noise. If i take the hose off that goes to the intake and plug the hose the truck runs way better. Do i need to use the PVC valve on the motor it runs way better without the hose on it. And can i just plug off the nipple on the intake.

2002 Dakota getting po174(think I'll switch out the sensors, put the right on the left, and left on the right to see if it will give me a po171)then I will know if it's the sensor! Does that make sense? I don''t have all that high tech equipment. Thanks for the video!

I dont understand this. I know Id throw Ivan out. Hes just confusing me and making it worse. Changing the O2 sensors cheaper than endless testing?

  13. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Branden Mulhollen says:

You guys together… haha. The back and forth really helps explain things. Eric if you see this comment try to get other nerdy diagnosticians on with you. Two people questioning each other like that pushes the subject and gets it across. Thanks again for the footage. Grade A stuff man!

Like your show Mr. O. Got a question. I had someone local to replace my lower intake gaskets. It was maybe 3 or 4 weeks after and I got a P1345 Diagnostic code. No other codes. I can clear the light and go 1 to 3 or so days without setting the light again. Usually on initial startup for the day I did some research on that code. I'm a bit older than you and somethings are harder for me now. No tears. The owner of the garage said I had some play in my cap. I wonder if a slightly loose cap would make that code appear. I read the threaded orifices for the cap screws are plastic. I don't know if the threads are damaged. I didn't touch the cap and I left the code in. I watched the cam retard timing and saw it was at ZERO at I believe 1000rpm. I'm not throwing you under the vehicle. Any ideas I might look at. I was looking and found an aluminum replacement , no plastic from SOUTHWEST in AZ. and some at Summit racing. Could you give me an idea. Thank you. Darrell.

I know this is an old video but when your buddy there mentioned 2 x 56k ohm resistors in parralel that is in theory 28k ohm with twice the wattage. So if you have two 1/4 watt resistors at 10k in parralel it is equivalent to 1/2 watt 5k, if you have the same two in series it would be equivalent to 1/4 watt 20k.
