In this video I bring you along as I look over this car to see why the engine light is on with a P0442 Small EVAP leak. This vehicle is equipped with a "capless" fuel system.... this should be lovely.

Its still safe driving the car like that until i fix it or i need to fix right a way
There is a tool in the truck for putting gas in with a can . If I you use carb cleaner or spray sea foam and push in and out it can sometimes clean it up and will seal. I fixed my mother in-laws that way. Given the rust belt condition of the filler pipe may be best to replace head off future issues
I have a Ford Flex, good car except I don’t understand why in the Hell they made a cap less system like that. It seems very strange to me. I’m always worried something can get into it easily with no cap.
This is America 🤣
Great video Eric O definitely a faint Amount of smoke Coming out of the filler neck good Find On this cap less System @SouthMainAutoRepairLLC
A great video.
I do
But I can hear a whistle and can't find it lol
My edge is p0442 small leak detected. It's annoying
Remember lifting the tail light up to put fuel in my boss 56 Cadillac
I would replace that filler neck eather way..atleast recommended it to the owner of the vehicle…it is in super bad shape…if it were my vehicle I would want that done before you go to put gas in 1 day and it ends up on the ground…
Thought you would make it again without dropping something but you didn't thanks for the videos
I remember the first time I saw one of these Ford "easy fuel" things on cars at the Minneapolis auto show. The FIRST thing that came to mind was, "how is this not going to leak after a couple of years?" The 2nd question was, "How are they going to keep crap from falling in there all the time?"
Do car rust that fast up in New York? I am in Florida =), just wondering…, or Ford make pretty poorly protected body , rust so fast?? Or are all the cars like that there,….after 5-6 years??? Makes me wonder…., I am really surprised =((
How many people remember when their was more involved then removing the gas cap. like the fill neck being behind the tag. I was around many monte carlo's in my childhood back in the early 1990s.
For future , On cap less fillers they have funnels to open the valve to add gas from cans and you can use silicone lightly spritz to spray that valve to lube that seal. You can find the funnel under back seat or in with spare tire. Hope all is well I am not a fan of this system at all.
Ford Idea fails again
I can't begin to tell you how much I appreciate your videos. I'm not a mechanic but love to do mechanical things. You are the most knowledgeable auto mechanic. You are incredible !!! Thank you …. Really Thank you..
I just bought a 1981 ford f-150. Can I get rid of the EVAP system? Will it hurt the running or the engine, 4.9L/ 300 CID?
whats the story on the camaro
Brother's 2015 Focus has one of these capless fuel-fill system, AND the fuel filler door is unlockable! I bought him an lockable gas-cap: 8U5Z-9C268-B.
I wish I could do it but I don't have a smoke machine
But can she do it?
Capless design is going everywhere. useless piece of crap. My Honda is the same way and is useless for an emergency fill or additive add.
That little flap is not made from aluminium, it's made out of BiMoreParts.
WOW…The RUST BELT.
My god man! don't cha know that there is a new invention to help save the planet from those harmful gas fumes. LOL!
Great diagnosis video.
I own a flex and have the same problem. I just reset the code a few days before I have an emission inspection. I'm not putting money into my 34k piece of shit. My 6.4 powerstroke had piston 8 crack in half too. Ford is total junk. I used to be a Ford man. The keep word, used too
I just put a big ol gob of axle grease in mine…fixed it! Engine light has been off for a month now, sure it will eventually come back
It's crazy how your intro became more enthusiastic over the years. =D
What brilliant mind thought of that capless deal? What a joke! I just can't imagine what they've got in store for the consumers of the future. Thanks for the video.
So most fuel system leaks on Ford seem to be associated with severe corrosion on fuel inlet tubes. However you may also want to look for issues with degradation of o-ring seal on fuel pump/sender to tank assembly. It seems the plastic material used in sender assembly is reactive in some way to either fuel or temperature or time. Noted in plastic o-ring seal area are numerous fissures and fractures about 360 degree circumference. These fractures do not seem to be caused by stress or other common cause; they seem to be attributed to material-science issue in design or manufacturing. Fuel leaks from these fissures pools on top of tank when tank is filled or fuel splashes against seal while driving. Fuel vapors are periodically noted in cabin with EVAP error codes intermittently reported. Replace entire sender assembly or coat fractures with quality sealant for cost effective fix.
Back in the day when the gas cap was behind the license plate? When it was annoying to hold the license plate down while fueling the vehicle and even more annoying when trying to replace the gas cap? Or how about the Chargers, and others, that put the fuel fill on the back of the car so that when you were done fueling the gas would drip on the paint?
Just a hint. A good plug are these plastic thingis you use when you Play Golf to balance the Ball on when you hit the Ball first time. I don’t Play Golf (i drive Golf). So i dont know the name. These thingis are conical and fit different tubes and places. I. Use Them f.eks to plug the fuelline on my old beetle when pulling the engine…..
Hapless gas cap makes no sense to me
Would this prevent the vehicle from starting?
Did this vehicle drive in with this issue?
No smoke machine needed here, looked at the filler neck on a 2001 Taurus and she looked really mean. Changed the filler tube with the cheapest filler neck other than OEM cheaper than Dorman, she not too long for this world. Just wanted her to make it thru her last emission test…..hahaha Ran a drive cycle within one day and she passed.
I have replaced 4or 5 of them they don't work in mn total joke
Had to replace my filler neck on my 11 mustang last year when it had 45k miles on it in addition to many other issues. Junk.
hey eric I just want you to know that I love your videos on how to go about diagnosing trouble codes and how you test everything and not second guess and start throwing parts at it and you also remind me a lot about myself.. you don't give up to easily you keep trying til you solve the problem. keep up the good work and as a diesel mechanic for the state of Connecticut department of transportation I don't mind telling you that ive learned a lot from watching your excellent videos. ThankYou for your services!
Those Ford Flexes look like an old fashioned beer cooler. They should have made them into beer coolers.
That should be a ford recall automatically.
I like your attitude.
You remind me of, well, me.
I loved working in the garage at my dad's place.
That was years ago, miss it dearly.
At least I have a carport to work on now, however. I would love to have that car lift, though.
Keep up the videos.
I try to record as often as I can when it comes to working on my truck and car.
Enjoyable, at times.
Working on a P0442, and a P0305, and a P0456
Oh, what fun. (No smoke machine here, though)
Great to watch an auto repair video in which the mechanic isn't cussing and using every swear word in existence. I appreciate that. Thanks for the G-rated video.
how would I do this on a 2001 ford Mustang?? please help
What a place for smoke to be coming from of course it`s a FORD THANK`S
