Another great video as always Eric. Love watching all the "special " repairs and trouble shooting you do.

  3. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Thom Martin says:

The dowel is only there for location purposes, and has no other job, so as long as it mats up with the head, and the gasket, you are good to go.

loctite on threads. My question: loctite site says temp range okay up to 300ยฐF, and to remove with hand tools, heat up to 450ยฐF. So, how much does the loctite actually help hold the inserts in place in the hot engine block???

Having a loving family makes work worthwhile. Itโ€™s great to see a dad who truly enjoys his family as well as his work.

If it is an 04 Rab4 you would think it would be cheaper to throw a junk yard engine or just junk the Car. I'm sure with the price of the strip down, the tapping and rebuild would come to more than the value of the Car. I get your nerves and I thank you for releasing this warts and all. Great video Mr O.

  9. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars David Shook says:

Someone on eBay, is offering a replacement bolt set that requires no drilling or tapping to fix the problem. Not until I see the video.

Little tip: in addition to putting oil in the hole, put some on the bit also to keep the whole bit oiled up

    Love these videos.

The issue is something called metallurgy. Same issue the Cadillac Northstar v8s had. A fine thread bolt torqued into soft metal. Then the dealer insists that 1 qt oil consumption in 800 miles is normal.
It was only when customers with 70,000 miles and the extended warranty escalated to Toyota North America that Toyota started to address the issue. An otherwise good car with a pos engine.

  18. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Antonio Claudio Michael says:

The head bolts fail because of the lack of amount of Threads used and The hot and Cold cycles from the head makes the Head Bolts Brittle Eric O @SouthMainAutoRepairLLC

    Nice work thank you!

  20. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars David Stowell says:

Eric I love your videos. You might be able to remove those hollow dowel pins by filling the cavity in the dowel pin hole with grease (it can be melted). Then with a punch or bolt that just fits inside the dowel pin drive the pin into the grease and the hydraulic action should move the pin. Hope this helps Iโ€™ve used it on pilot bearings etc. and it works well.
    Many Blessings to you all,
    David

My experience with drilling into blocks is drill until you hit water. Then go home.

A fine job then as now. Heavy on info and personality. Iโ€™m not sure that there is any better channel day in , day out on YouTube. Others do some, you do all.

  23. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars J Stewart says:

Wouldn't you be better to vacuum the waste metal rather than blowing it all over the car ,you never know where it goes into and damages .

  24. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars J T says:

a h00ker can do a head job, too

  25. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Johnny Sechrist says:

I remember a recall while working at a chevy dealership in the 80's Wrong type of headbolts broke or streatchedwhich caused head gasket to blow or warped heads….Had to do a few even though I was the shops only alignment tech…..I didn't stay on that job long even if they did sponsor my late model stock. That red loctite is almost as good as sleeve retainer loctite.

  26. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Keris Francis says:

What size tool fits head bolt

  27. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Craigie F Concert says:

Iโ€™ve got a 2006 Camry with the 2AZFE engine, which is the same as the rav4. I hope this never happens to it.

What Iโ€™d like to know is what causes these bolts to strip? They naturally strip themselves out due to pressure?

  28. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Greg Hamilton says:

On a 4.2 inline g m engine, you will break 11 of the 14 head bolts. That is a job. The kit to repair it is somewhere around 6 to 8 hundred dollars if i remember correctly. I turned the job down.

  29. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars heyitschino says:

Kind of a random question Eric. If you need that special tool to complete that job do you usually charge that to the customer the price of the tool. Or let it eat into your profit from that repair job? Kind of a weird one. Yea youโ€™re the mechanic and need the tool but it wasnโ€™t your fault that the bolts stripped. That was bad design or because of heat cycles or what have you

  30. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Mike Blake says:

I think I missed something cause I can't find the video of the head removal

  31. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars AlexVids says:

That air drill is crap, way to fast. No control.

  32. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars AlexVids says:

It's cheaper to fix it than buy a new car. Duh.

  33. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Rod Parker says:

Try to keep that brake parts cleaner off your skin, it's called "routes of ingestion",
    Skin is one.

  35. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars fubar totale says:

"T" handled tap wrenches are handy, smaller swing and better feel.
In the trade they call the straight ones "tap breaker" wrenches.

    Haha Eric, โ€œkindof spendy, but…the boxโ€

  42. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Cliff Glines says:

I had a guy come to my shop. He had over heated his honda so he wanted me to put new rings bearings and head gasket. I got it all done and went to put the heat on, and it had been so hot it annealed the block so bad it stripped ALL the head bolts. I Heli coiled all the bolt holes. What a fun day that was.

  43. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Edward Haas says:

Eric, when I did this I used a shop vac while drilling and that sucked up the loose chips as I drilled and evacuated debris in hole, just a tip, I am not in your league, great videos, THX.

  44. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Clinton Andrews says:

Just a thought: the air drill might not be the best tool for this job because it is high speed and the larger the bit the lower the rpm for optimal drilling. Think of the speed/pulley chart on a drill press. A variable speed electric drill might be a better option. Are there any machinists out there who can speak to the subject?

  45. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Stormy Rain says:

2az-fe = 2zz-fe backwards. Same engine that is in the 2003-2008 corolla. The 2003-2004 versions had bad piston rings. Change them to stop the oil burning issue. It is a known issue with these engines
