how do you pull fluid out and put it in at the same time?
Lack proper Adjectives.
Sat in the back of the class. Yet the bacon and cheddar cheezits are really good.
Rain man is the Dr.Drew of the mechanic world
I have no idea how you can ignore all the crap and snacks in these vehicles. they must smell bad!
Old woman: "My car doesn't start!"
Mechanic: "Okay, let's have a looks." gets in, turns the key, starts up fine "It worked this time, when didn't it start for you."
Old woman: "Well of course it works if you use the key!"
Mechanic: "Wait…what?"
Old Woman: "My son just gets in his car and presses a button! I pressed all the buttons in my car and it doesn't start!"
Pained mechanic sounds
You make it sound like the shop doesn't allow customers to speak to the techs. Please tell me I misunderstood?
The classic Nissan Dumpster model, is faulty, please fix it.
Hey Ray! Thanks for creating great content! Love your videos! Say, i couldn't help but noticed some cars you're working on has tons of garbage within their interior, and your reaction to that is… nonexistent, as far as i can tell. So is this out of politenes, or is this kind of messy interiors is just a common sight? I can't believe someone can drive like that, honestly.
I would have taken a few cheese-it’s.
Transmissions in the Nissans have been a problem…especially the torque converter. Over time, the heat breaks down the trans even if an external trans cooler is added, the tranny breaks down (torque converter). Google Nissan tranny problems in 4cyl vehicles.
Every time I hear a phone I keep doing the doo da doos everyone keeps giving me strange looks😆
From both sides. The mechanic should contact the customer direct and eliminate the service writer.
Customer. wright your complaint on paper and tape it to the steering wheel along with your phone number.
I'm a pilot for a major US airline, and as part of our initial ground school, an aircraft mechanic spends nearly two hours in front of the pilots explaining exactly how to "write up" a mechanical discrepancy with an aircraft. Ray, you would've made him proud. 🙂 Mechanics as a general rule have a fantastic sense of humor; he included really funny examples (some made up, some real life) of poorly written "write ups" made by pilots:
Discrepancy: Something loose in cockpit
Corrective Action: Something tightened in cockpit
Discrepancy: Aircraft flies funny
Corrective Action: Sternly told aircraft to straighten up and fly right
There's a ton more, but this comment is already long enough. : )
This has been one of my longest-running issues in the mechanical industry. I don't care if it sounds bonkers. or like gibberish. Service writers need to tell the tech EVERYTHING! You never know what kind of crazy detail may lead to a solution. Thank you for bringing this up in a public forum. You've made a new fan!
But do you know what I like more than corvettes? Knowledge!
Just Curious, does this owner live in this vehicle, got to be the most Cluttered car on planet earth…
I am truly amazed that people don’t even bother to deal with their trash when they bring it in for work. Doesn’t need to be detailed, but throw away the immediate trash man.
@Rainman Ray's Repairs you alluded to (what I believe) is the core problem with every field of endeavor: Your field is not THEIR field… others, here, have said similar things and what's most missing is the skill with which the client is interviewed. If the go-between is not fluent in translating lay-speak to tech-speak there will be troubles… ymmv 😀
I think its steering column
Typical automotive mechanic not a transmission mechanic a transmission mechanic would take in consideration how many miles are on a transmission before evacuating fluid a warm transmission needs the fibers that are in that oil to assist worn out clutches you take that away from a Warren set of clutches in a transmission seen you will have no transmission that's always what most mechanics make that mistake another words you could have got more time out of that transmission. There's a good chance in a couple weeks he will have no choice but to the transmission shop when I start slipping due to bad clutches and now absent of the friction in the oil to help them bad clutches alone
That thing is a S#!t box. It’s a rolling diabetes machine with all that junk food.😂
At least the customer left you some Cheezits for your test drive 😉👍
Driving in Florida is like a wild safari without a guide.
A old transmission expert showed me how and where to drill and tap a 1/8" pipe plug hole in the torque converter, too completely drain system.
If the transmission filter is plugged game over.
My diagnosis would be way too much CRAP in the car.
That truck was like a pig sty! Wouldn't want the owner working for me.
With any complex noise, issue, etc, I usually print a note out and leave it taped to the dash so I know my words reach the tech. The service "writer" has failed me too many times.
the real problem with this vehicle is that the sneaker in passenger seat was disconnected./
hahahahahaha doo do-do do-dooo!
truck full of cheeze…. GROWSSSS
that's not a car, it's garbage truck. people are disgusting.
Here's a note for my current car problems:
Car shaked hard when braking to a stop. The shaking only seems to start when getting closer to the full stop. Car also shakes a lot more noticeably, but less often, when reversing out of a spot with the brake applied. Loys of vibration noises.
Car also has a subtle stuttering feel when idling at a stop. Putting in neutral helps rid the stuttering. But the car doesn't seem to stutter when first starting the car for the day. I cant help but notice all the lighting (dashboard, dome, map, etc) seem to flicker along with the stuttering and with the vibrations.
Also maybe once every 4 months we'll experience a few days of total loss of power randomly. As in no lights, sounds, warning lights. Can't even turn the key to unlock the door. We could casually drive to do grocery shopping to come out to a dead car. Jiggling the negative cable seemed to produce positive results. But not all the time. Some times we just had to let it sit for a day before trying again.
Another issue with losing power is that driving slowly (parking lots mostly) the car would randomly die/stall. As in the steering wheel locks up, all the warning lights illuminate such as TC, ABS, oil, etc. You also would hear a click when it died and a click when it "revived". Usually we would try and ride it out of the parking lot, turn the car off and key out and try again, or attempt to try to restart the car but be met with the complete loss of power again. One time I had it do the steering wheel lock up, lights, etc 5 different times as i desperatley tried maneuvering into a parking spot.
Also very last ive lately notice a noticable rubbing feel/sound when trying to get up to 45mph at around 35mph with 1,500 rpms. Playing with the gas pedal allows me to "bypass" this feeling and get up to proper speed with no problems.
2006 toyota rav4 2.4L bought with 213,000 miles currently at 250,000.
No history of repairs. It has major oil leak around the valve.
New alternator, serp belt, and battery.
Two of four new ignition coils, 4 new spark plugs. The coils failed and threw p303(?) Codes to diagnose.
New rear tires.
New rotors and pads all around.
New front driver ball joint.
What's up with the click bait….your videos are slipping….get back to how you 1st started….getting to be annoying!!
What a pig tie of a car… The owner must have some issues…
I like the old 'it's got a knock it didn't have before' one.
The bigger question is why not call or talk to the customer before attempting repair? Like why waste the Customers/Shops/Mechanics time when you don't even know what you're trying to fix. Wait until you can get ahold of the Customer, find out the issue and then go from there.
Did they come back ?. Does it matter I got a camaro instead 🤣
I'm known for ripping things of rearview mirrors. I'm tall, and they're always right in my eyeline, that and you can hide a motorcyclist or cyclist behind the bloody things!
Is the cars interior a reflection of of the owner?
Ray you owe me a new wife I took your advice and got a new Corvette and then she left me
I'm a service advisor for Toyota. I use your videos as extra training in information gathering.
My car doesn't start. Also, it's far too blue. Oh, and it makes a noise when I try to start it. I need it back by lunchtime.
I feel as though you could have done a little more to help this guy he came to you with a Pacific problem and he left your shop still with a Pacific problem
I have a pathfinder with this engine, I'm pretty sure I know what vibration he's referring to. While in Drive and stopped the rpms drop to ~600 and it jumps back up to where it should be. I have no mechanical experience so I have no idea what causes it. I thought it was a misfire so I took it in for a tune up, but even with new plugs it vibrates.
So it isn’t a custom in the USA to call the customer?
It would be so much easier to repair guy just pick up the phone and ask the customer for more details…
I work in healthcare and that whole rant can 100% go both ways. I've always said an ICU nurse and a mechanic have a whole bunch in common. It's all pumps and wires. Haha
Also "people just don't really know very much about the machine they are driving". Nope. No they do not.
As I was typing this response to how a transmission shop is similar to say a cardiologist or more likely an orthopedic doc, you started saying the same thing! like minds I guess.
I’m exactly the same way!! I won’t go inside an automatic trans
Once at a dealership, had a complaint of tires out of balance over 110 mph. I just handed the ticket back. Service writer ask me why, and I told him the speed limit was 75.
