    Very interesting. 🙂

  2. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars C D James says:

    Very educational

  3. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Armed Prophet says:

DEF is constantly being injected into the system whenever the engine is on. It does NOT cycle on an as needed basis. FYI.

  4. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Michael Lawrence says:

DEF is actually fertilizer and ultra pure water. Urea is a main component of fertilizer

  5. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Michael Lawrence says:

You would have remembered to tighten the boot pipe if you soldered those wires…

  6. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Michael Lawrence says:

If you would have soldered those wires it would have let you program it the first time.🤣🤣🤣

  7. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Alex Goldstein says:

These are starting to show up at our shop now that they have some miles on them…lots of the same failures. Lots to crap out on these related to emission control.

  8. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Cole-Trickle says:

My 2019 Duramax broke down on me at 49964 miles . Blew the hot pipe off and rolled to a stop . Put it back on and it kept dying , got a check exhaust warning and it got towed to the dealership . DPF was clogged and under warranty by 50 miles and was replaced for free . I was told this is quite normal with these systems . Every 50k miles will cost $3300

  9. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars teeViS says:

    Fascinating. 👌

  10. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars 907 Schoolie Tech says:

A nice little tip for DEF systems is to make sure that any fluid in the lines is returned back to tank before disconnecting the battery, you should hear a pump start running when you shut off the ignition. When the pump stops you can disconnect main power. That’s how it it is with heavy equipment and heavy trucks, I assume it’s the same with pickups.

Another reason to NOT own a diesel …

    holy shit

And i thought my 52 chevy was great . i see now why these trucks are so expensive . good job Ray

  14. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars taj1460 says:

    DIRTYMAX!!!!!!!!!!😁

  15. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars John Thimakis says:

So what was the correct sequence for programming the injector flow rate? Did you work out what you did differently or did you just fluke it eventually?

  16. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars JM NUÑEZ says:

Thank you for educating us with your videos, one question, how long does a dpf of a 3.0 diramax engine last?

  17. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars phat Boys1104 says:

I love the way u explain everything vary detail Iike watching ur videos

  18. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Bill Bauer says:

Damn. Learned something today. Thanks Ray!

  19. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Robert B. says:

Soot level has zero to do with the differential sensors. The ecm has built in tables that calculate soot load by length between regens and length of regen temp achieved and such. That's why in many diesels you can just reset the soot load. They do this to keep folks from hollowing out systems. No doc/dpf means no heat up means no successful regen means no soot level lowering. So yes you can be derated by soot load with a brand new dpf if you don't go tell the computer you have changed it or run a regen.

The differential sensors are to protect against rapid plugging if say /cough you blow a intake hose off and the truck overfuels like a mofo which can jam up a dpf in minutes.

Edit: I know I am super late to this video and likely no one will read this but I want to say my writing can come off as douchey sometimes. It is not my intention. I have been a diesel mechanic/ shop owner for basically my entire life (my grandpa started the shop i know own which i bought from my dad). I have been dealing with these stupid aftertreatment systems since they came out 15 years ago and know them back to front. I am shakier on cars (I am a heavy duty guy not pickups) and have been learning loads from these videos and wanted to impart some of my knowledge in return.

  20. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Joseph Beard says:

I was in the medical service in the USAF and had a fleet of Blue Bird busses converted to ambulances and they weren’t used a lot and so I performed regen on them often and my goodness the plumes that came out of those bad boys.

I would do all 5 at once in the open area of our loading bay

  21. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars XH1927 says:

The absolute hash the EPA has made of diesel reliability and cost to operate/maintain should be enough alone to justify dissolving that pathetic joke of an alphabet soup agency

  22. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars James Hough says:

I think "hot tub" as a measure of temperature is about to take the world by storm.

  23. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Don's Junkmail says:

    Tappty tappys revenge to you…

  24. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Kerry Wade says:

The DEF is a urea based field witch is a fertilizer so it will not kill plants unless to much is applied. That is why it crystallizes on things.

  25. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Thomas says:

I bet if large diesel truck has the same DPF system, those are much louder than this running the regen procedure.

  26. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars NAVAHO says:

Its good to see snap on have been making scan tool since 1920, lol cheers from OZ.

  27. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Mythryl says:

Maybe you had a carriage return at the end of the ID and that's why it failed? When watching again the 8 other attempts had the cursor 1 space further along. On try 9 the cursor was on the last digit.

  28. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars PS Custom Made says:

Do they normally do a clean while cruising down the highway? Is the manual burn purely a part of a maintenance procedure like when you changed the Injector? Doesn't the system know when a can do an "auto" burn.
    Another great video😀

  29. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Ronnie K says:

Now I have more reason not to buy a diesel.

  30. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars ColdDead Hands says:

    Great video!!

  31. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars TrojanSalesmen says:

I am never gonna use this knowledge I learned today from this video.. but it was hella fun to learn

  32. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars James Graves says:

    That was cool that

  33. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars chris McCaskell says:

I really like how you explain everything so us shade tree mechanics get a understanding what and why things happen. Love the videos Ray.

  34. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars A Person says:

Actually, it doesn't blow the ash out – or at least it's not supposed to. The ash is actually WORSE for health than the soot it's preventing. MUCH finer particles that can remain suspended in the air longer and can get deeper into soft tissue than the much larger soot particles.

  35. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Donald Malone says:

I drive a tractor trailer and we call the type of regen that you did a "forced regen"…

  36. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Lowell Martin says:

Sorry Ray but that sounds more like a threshing machine than a Gas Turbine engine. Maybe the decibel level sounds close but I've heard more Gas Turbine/Jet engines and this doesn't sound like that.

  37. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Timothy Webb says:

A funny story for you and your readers! My son is a Coast Guard CPO, who was initially trained as a maritime diesel mechanic … y'know … for the BIG diesels in the BIG boats. In a conversation I had with him, I asked what the displacement of the engine he was working on, and he replied, "oh … about 1000 cc"! I remarked that that didn't seem all THAT big. Then he informed me, "no, Dad. That's for EACH cylinder … and the engine has 16 cylinders (some had more, like 20 or 24+) … EACH with a displacement of 1000 cc!" Now, that's HUGE, IMHO! Apparently some of the destroyers have even larger powerplants, if they're diesel powered! He also told me that, when it was necessary to work on the innards (i.e., crankshaft territory), he had to actually crawl INTO the engine through a special access to work on the innards … sorta wedging himself between piston connecting rods and the crankshaft! Of course, with the engine OFF and sufficiently cooled down! Fortunately for him, he's in good shape … and a little on the THIN side … unlike his old man (a retired LTC US Army)! I'd really like to see a video made by you working on one of those monsters … IF you could get the boat into your engine bay! Just think how much fun you could have with some truly GIANT torque wrenches ("click-click-click")!!! (I'm told that, in some cases, it takes 2-3 mechanics (burly type) to twist those wrenches enough to get an audible "CLICK" !!! Go figure!

Adblue isn't being dumped anywhere if SCR works correctly, is converted to nitrogen and water

  39. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Tadeusz Gladysz says:

Instead typing all that stuff you can just scan the QR code

  40. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Laddie m says:

What brain surgeon came up with this asinine way to "clean up diesel engines?

  41. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Laddie m says:

How often does it regenerate & how much fuel is used? Where does the def fluid come into play?

  42. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Lester Morales says:

I learned a new tech tip. I meant to say ,yes I was Chevy tech too.thank you too .

  43. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars perryfenton says:

how long did it take for the regeneration i know you said around 20 min. or was it longer than that thanks

  44. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Kasual Skeptik says:

It astounds me that you need to be a good mechanic, but also a great computer hacker to make just an injector swap…

  45. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars SCRATCHING FOR CASH says:

What an amazing system. Who the hell thought of that?

  46. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars brian doughty says:

Well done mate. We have the 2.8l in our Holden Colarodo always wondered what was involved in this process. Have heard of blokes charging $500+ for this .
We were told if we get a DPF warning easiest way was to jump on the highway get up to 110kmph run the donk to 2000rpm for around 15-20 minutes and that would fix the issue, looks like you did the same thing here or was this a special run required by the "computer" to fix the problem?

  47. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Chris Bentley says:

Just one question. When the cycle has completed, why can't you just switch the engine off?

  48. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars olivere8086 says:

I drive and international LT Prostar and the truck will while in a regen shut down. Of course I'm in start stop mode when it does this but I still think 13 letter shit spreader engineers should know better.

  49. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars James Monteith says:

Just run your Diesel on the highway once a week or so, and you can avoid this entirely.
