Sounds like you have a cluster f@@k! lol 😂
Wusah! You keep doing you! Pain in the *as customers.
Oh I remember those day, I loved having a blue dash back in the day..
My new "used" car is a 2003 Crown Vic. 98,000 miles. Mine is in better shape.
"20 year old Plastic!" all us old vehicle owners know and feel your anxiety!
Any chance that the Ray fixed the gauge, but the oil pressure sending unit was also bad (dead short)? I say this because after Ray took the gauge apart and plugged it back in, the gauge did what a dead short at the oil pressure sending unit would do.
I love watching the diagnosis process. I’ve been working on my own cars for 25 years. Learn something every video.
After market oil gauge? Kudos for dash-pulling bravery!
I would offer to install an aftermarket gauge separate from the cluster if your shop allows that.
I think I'd put an aftermarket oil pressure gauge on it and call it good.
is it that the dipping stick isn't long enough alas no I knew ray would sort it
Pulling out a cluster while powered up is not a good idea, as there are usually exposed circuits on the back. I did this with my Jeep Wrangler and burnt/ shorted / grounded out the clock circuit on the circuit board.
Can you say FORD!!!
Been there , done that. The gauges normally ere ex scrapyard stock. High 5 !
I’ve repl those dash lights many times. It was so nice.
Just puta three way cluster on lower part of the dash water oil voltage its the fix it only way to hv info vital keep motor alive
Liked and Positive comment for the YouTube algorithm
My Ford oil pressure gauge does the same thing. Was told it was just the way they work.
retired cop car transmission gotta be fucked lol
When the dash is held together by duct tape and spit and there's no oil on the dipstick and the upper radiator hose looks like the cars been overheated generally speaking the customer isn't going to pay you to tell them the correct answer. A customer's car generally paints a picture as to how they are.
There's a very troublesome grey area in interaction between a customer telling you to diagnose the problem and actually wanting to pay for the time it took for the mechanic to find the answer to the problem they were told to diagnose.
Don't be letting Cletus McFarland come in with his fleet of beet up Vics! (Also may be a source of parts in the future, I know he trashes a lot of them from his circle track races and probably has good parts such as gauge clusters and such off them).
If you need Crown Vic parts, give Cleetus a call. He has tons of them laying around and not too far from you.
Just be Swedish. Screw/bolt are both called ”Skruv”. No problem knowing what to call them.
That car might belong to Jeremy Dewitte.
Use a old type after market gauge.ike most of the old hotrod use.
Around here we have a junk yard where you can go "pick your parts" called LKQ – only took me a few minutes to find they have locations in Florida with Crown Vics (2001, 2002 & 2003) in Clearwater, Largo, Tampa & Daytona and they had photos showing dashboards with the instrument clusters intact. I know it's a bit late to help your customer now, but maybe keep it in mind for the future as a possible alternative to eBay.
Plenty of old Vics east orlando , bithilo , junk yards
I love this deep dive into how these little things work.
Yeesh, the perseverance you demonstrate! Back in '92. my first auto engineering job was in a (competitor's) cluster group. The department was converting their clusters from analog "air core gauges," 'motors' as you say, to digital electronic systems. The mother company wanted out of the 'can' business. This video sure recalls a lot of forgotten memories. I'm amazed by your natural systems intuition, and wish you all the best finding a replacement for the bad 'can.' Ebay or a local scrap yard may indeed be your best hope. Peace, and don't forget to have a great day!
Thank you muchly for this video. I recently acquired a 2004 CV (base civilian P73 with analog gauges). One of the known issues is a failed low temperature indicator. Real trouble shooting has not started yet … but with this video I will likely not opening up the cluster for this one issue. (I have done this on other cars: my caveman hands and temperament tend to break aged plastic) Note: when I have My ScanGauge II hooked up it does indicate coolant temp so that may be a hint or at least a workaround… BZ on a very entertaining and informative channel. (I will next watch pt2)
Wow, that was a cluster!
Every security company wants an old cruiser until it's time to service or pay to service them. Being a former security monkey the most important things to work on those are the heat, air and radio. it doesn't matter if it runs like shit as long as it runs because you have no authority to do anything with them. You are either siting or slowly driving in circles
Wouldn't mind having A Crown Vic. They would be fun out on a country road. Very iconic cars.
I would have removed the sender put a test Gage on to see if it even has oil pressure before I took out the clusters.
But I've been working on cars more years then he is old
Rabbit hole, indeed! I see you doing so much hard to get at components under the hood that require 14 layers of other wiring harness or intake, air box , etc. My hat is off to mechanics everywhere.
I'm kind of used to paying the repair guy by the hour. Only very minor diagnostic would be free.
I saw this old cop car had 140mph on the speedometer. Is the engine a special 4.6 to achieve that speed?
I've got a spare cluster for a 2010 interceptor…lol
It's well be 85 psi at cold start. It's well go down to 40 to 30 when warm up
JUST changed the Pressure sensor… It didn't work????? Cheap compared to all your labor cost ??????
Don't need eBay, go to LKQ junkyard and pick up a couple of them
Still could be the SENDER not varying it's internal resistance
I mean Ray in 2023 there will be loads of aftermarket parts for this thing lol
looks like a differential coil set , common on OLD systems no big deal !!
Do you not know Cletus McFarland. He has dozens of Crown Victorias that I'm sure he would be happy to give you a cluster from. He's a big Youtube guy in Florida like you. Don't know how far you or your customer is from Bradenton?
What did you do to your hand.
You forgot to coagulate the dicam booster. Now you will need explosives and mass quantities of beer.
