It never ceases to cause me wonder, when “stupid customers” bring something into the repair shop they had “repaired” elsewhere and then decline any remedy once the problem had been diagnosed by the second establishment. “No, we will take it back to the first place” 😡 I hope you hit them up for an “inspection fee”, I used to. I would tell them beforehand that, that would be the case

Their first problem is buying a Hyundai

  5. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Sweet Tooth says:

Backyard mechanic way of cleaning out a catalytic converter: run your tank with a mixture of 10 gallons of gas and one gallon of lacquer thinner. It’ll clean your combustion chamber and cats as you drive around.

  6. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Eileen Hawkins says:

I came to the same diagnosis as soon as I saw it was a junkyard engine. I don't get why folks leap to the most costly repair. If I have an engine misfiring I start with a fuel filter and work up from there. My Daddy taught me that (by installing a fuel pump when what I needed was a fuel filter.) Saved me mucho money over the years I was driving.

I own a small machine shop and its real difficult to explain to the customer , fixing this issue is one that but we need to know what caused the problem

  9. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars saultube44🇺🇦 says:

Customer doesn't want to fix the actual problem, wants the engine back, well the customer chose to drive a Hundai, makes sense that keeps making erratic decisions

  12. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Phill Stevenson says:

Probably what blew the motor in the first place, my girls kia soul had a recall on the cats, kia dealer told her its not time to replace them, month later motor pops from a clogged cat

  13. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars fakebrake says:

Or it could be the engine while dying fouled the cat. Who knows.

  14. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars fakebrake says:

Love the vids. I watch alot of mechanic channels and you are hands down one of the best 👌

  15. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Jeremy Diaz says:

Most likely it was a clogged catalytic convertor to begin with and it didn’t need a new engine

  16. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Stan Washighski says:

You get what you pay for, good luck fixing it when they show back up with a new yard tranny in it 🙂

  17. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Richard Caniglia says:

I watched a lady at a dealership service department decline repairs when they wanted her to replace a mismatched tire that was causing her complaint. She insisted that couldn’t be the problem, LOL! Customers. Whatcha gonna do?

It's too bad they didn't authorize the cat repair. It would've been a lot more educational to see if you were correct, and I believe you were.

  27. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Rich Sweeney says:

  32. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars David Haliburda says:

It's not the junkyards fault they don't sell any engine with cats attached

Nice diagnosis but be aware, the laser in the IR thermometer is just to make things look fancy. The sensor inside the thermometer just measures total light heating power: Infrared thermometers employ a lens to focus the infrared light emitting from the object onto a detector known as a thermopile.

The thermopile is nothing but thermocouples connected in series or parallel. When the infrared radiation falls on the thermopile surface, it gets absorbed and converts into heat. Voltage output is produced in proportion to the incident infrared energy. The detector uses this output to determine the temperature, which gets displayed on the screen.

While this entire process may sound complicated, it takes only a few seconds for the infrared thermometer to record the temperature and display in your desired unit.

Why I will never have another Korean Car. Hyundai Accent ate its engine and Hyundai would not honor the warranty.

  35. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Joke Kelleey says:

That's always so cool when he shuts down the engine it's a very important it's really cool it's really cute shutting down the engine now

  36. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Matthew Miller says:

How did you decide you needed to check the exhaust first and not the filter/intake?

I just found a bunch of crap like something tried to nest in my car's intake and seemed to have WAY more power than before even though I wasn't having a significant enough problem to take it into a shop. I only found it because I was doing seasonal work on the cabin filter and figured "why not check the engine filter too even though it was just serviced"

  37. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Dante D'Auvergne says:

Could of used the map sensor reading to tell if exhaust is clogged

what pisses me off about ny and California is they got strict emission inspections so if you got problems with your catalytic converter on my dodge grand caravan 2009 needed one it cost the cheapest possible that is ny/cailifornia certified 1200 plus while any other outside of the two states it cost at most 300 like i hate that bs

  40. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Aaron Gurtler says:

I was thinking first step would be to check spark plug gap. I guess that's why I'm not a mechanic.

  41. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars CANADIAN UKRANIAN says:

My brother had a Russian Lada in the 1980's Canada.
It ran like this car and we took it to a muffler shop called Madeens LOL.
They poked the pluged up converter with a metal bar and the car could get it's 90 hp or more after that.

  42. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars jesse wynne says:

I’m surprised they didn’t take it to Hyundai and see if they could use the 100k mile warrenty
Since they only have 79k miles
Cats don’t usually get that clogged at such low miles..shows how cheap Hyundai parts are made..

My previous car died the same death. Suddenly went into a limp mode and couldnt break 20mph. Cat ended up getting clogged and a replacement was $1200 since it was built into the exhaust manifold

  48. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Shiva Dumahnesht says:

to be honest i probably would have just forced her to drink 2 cans of engine conditioner, hopefully watched the problem shoot out the back of the exhaust in a cloud of black smoke and called it a day haha

  49. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Moon Moon says:

Just to refresh my silly forgetful brain; cats should be hotter on the output, right? Something like 40c/100f hotter? Would appreciate one of you kind folks jogging my memory. Thanks!
