People love to blame motorcycles for accidents. You could have a weird failure in your car, maybe causing you to stall on RR tracks, and you wouldn't give up cars.
We riders must accept there is an inherent danger to riding, but you learn to be a better driver. 45 years riding, most of it on Gold Wings.
I hear ya Ray. I rode for 2 decades. I had a friend lose both his legs at the knee because some teenage wouldn't wait to check their Instagram feed. I gave it up shortly after that. WAY to many inattentive drivers on the road.
Testing the battery should have also been done ! Yes I know it looks new but this does not mean it was good .. Ray did I miss something…
Extremely sorry to hear about the loss of your friend.
Ray, Scotty Kilmer said the same thing, if your car is functioning Squirrelly, ck Battery for correct voltage and make sure terminals are clean-this could correct all your problems if computer is getting correct voltage…
Yo Ray, that’s some serious air blowing in the cabin.
Ray, sold my bike also after some friend grief also, and a couple close calls, Actually my friend, with family, 4 wheels better than two. Note: with 12 volt voltage, the flow of electrons starts at the negative terminal. NEGATIVE is very important. I liked your video here ! especially with the personal bike story. I helps us get to know you better.
External voltage regulator connections on old GM [1960s-1970s] cars will do the same thing.
my wifes ford escort had a weird problem like that too. it was randomly stalling out. never ran rough. i had bought it used but the whole head had been replaced(recently, it was shiny aluminum) couldnt place what was going on. id have to drive out to her over and over at different places around town. pop the hood, see nothing, tell her crank it. no problems. eventually by chance i go to check the plug wires etc again and the distributor is cracked at the connector. so badly its severed. somehow the thing would still run, no missfires. but randomly die. weirdest thing ive ever seen.
good of you to share your life experience with us sorry to hear about your friend take care
Hi Ray. Did you check tranny fluid?
Motorcycle, I rode as a youngster , gave it up after my children were born, Moved to FL, Rode again , A deer jumped out of woods onto front wheel at dusk. Waited 2 years to ride again. Now I avoid Dusk and dawn. But my children are grown and on their own.
I've had various motorcycles in my 20s and I can tell you that it's DANGEROUS to drive one. Statistically, you WILL be involved in an accident within 15,000 miles…!
Not because you're a reckless driver, and they are many, but because car drivers feel so protected in their cars, they are mostly oblivious about what's going on around them, including missing stop signs and red lights, and lane changes without signaling or checking blind spots… Imagine getting rear-ended by a Ford F-150…Yikes..!
My wife recently suggested we get a scooter when we move to the Philippines and I said no fuckin way…. I'll only drive a nice big SUV, thank you..
Remember, no one is looking out for you on the road, except yourself… Drive defensively and take your time…
Your friend is telling you to leave the bike alone
Quit ridding
I really enjoyed your story! You've got the power!
This sounds less like a "don't ride motorcycles story" and more like a, if your having an electrical problem check your battery first? Like instead of just leaving the bike sit there for a week, you checked everything but the very first thing you should have checked.
Holy crap I'm glad you're ok, and glad we can all learn from it
Too many felts on batt. Posts!
What did the transmission fluid look like
As an Engineer once told me, "Never assume anything," but he did assume that smoking wouldn't affect his health soooo, You never know, Thanks
A hot cooling system can heat up the tranny as the fluid is going through the lower part of the radiator.
Isn't terminal protector spary applied after installing clean terminals on clean posts?
. I have a left knee, cage in my neck and two more coming. Two plates 18 pins in the right ankle and tibia. Left knee and send plate were from low speed bike mis haps. The kne due to another driver the right tibia plate because well.. It was destined to happen and my fault. I actualy dreampt the accident a year prior.
I won't stop riding. Ever.
But i stay out of cities certainties of day. Prefer back roads.
I believe in that our time is pre destined.
I still love my slow 750 Harley style bike now compared to the mighty fast 2005 ninja I had in 2007 was chewed up and spit out by an 18wheeler that got in my lane. Broke over 14 bones that night and had to be flown to shock trauma. Broke my spine in 2 places also but luckily I can still walk after healing.
I’m just now getting back to walking around again after breaking leg on dirt bike only for some idiot to jam flat on the brakes for me to break my arm on my motorcycle on Xmas eve.. I rode it around some last week once or twice when the weather permitted..my main commuter since I can’t figure out my damn Jeep Liberty transmission . Damn thing went into limp mode I think and now it doesn’t wanna start in the back yard. Been parked there since transmission made some popping and banging sounds while driving so turned around and parked it at home. Now it doesn’t wanna crank up and has almost a full tank of gas.. have been wanting to get transmission checked out since have a daughter that I don’t trust traffic enough to ride with me.
Two interesting, related morals to this story. First – do always check your battery connections when under the hood for any reason and second – riding a motorcycle can be very scary sometimes.
I always carry around one or two spare battery terminal/post cleaners in my trunk tool bag. A number of times I have stopped to help someone get their car started and found that it was just bad, corroded connections at the battery. I show the owner how to disconnect them safely and clean them. Them I give them a new battery terminal/post cleaner for them to keep. It is inexpensive and can help them (or someone else) in the future.
Second – I have owned 3 different motorcycles in my lifetime, particularly when I was younger. Bikers have to learn defensive driving much more than regular drivers because of the situation. I learned early on that there are four types of drivers – (1) those that never see you, (2) those that see you but subconsciously feel you are no threat to them, (3) those that see you and consciously aim at you, and (4) those that see you, understand how difficult it is to protect yourself from bigger vehicles, and give you plenty of leeway. My suspicion is that type (4) are, other bikers!
Take care out there!
📞 da do da do…!!!! 😁
Glad your ok
Well, im gonna imagine just to make u insane, one of ur kids will probably wind up being a motorcycle racer now or some crap like that, or at least thats my luck.
my condolences to you on the loss of your friend.
Good advice,,ck bat terms
Red shmoo good after mounting,
In 1995 I was travelling on a motorcycle in to London when a lorry overtaking me suddenly changed lanes to get the exit lane, sadly in the course of getting the exit lane he drove over me and my motorcycle. I came too the following day in the Royal London Hospital. Broken Leg, 8 broken ribs, broken arm and fractured vertebrae's. It was weird. You know when you blink your eyes, you open them and the world has moved on 1/20th of a second. Well to me it had moved on 30 hours. I was confused because I went from riding on the road when my eyes closed, to laying on my back in intensive care, 30 hours later, when they opened again. I had no concept of the time in-between.
My wife has said I can have another bike when I can afford the divorce !
Appreciate the “life’s share” as well as the fabulous automotive help you provide!
"Long story short, anyone want to buy a motorcycle? Possibly cursed."
Riding MC in City is form of Roulette. Q is not If , but When. As orderly in 60s, saw too many who survived crash, sent to long term permanent care in Stryker bed . These days in CenTex, at least 1 fatality wkly, many more permanently disabled. Ya, bikes are cool , but have no redundant safety to help with sudden Stop.
We even lost UT-NFL great Cedric Benson and lady friend that way a few yrs back.
Thank you for sharing. 😎
Great story, thank you for sharing.👍
Ray ,Thanks for sharing , My youngest son had issues /his motorcycle {serious near bad accidents} He sold it & and rarely rides any two wheeler.
Riding a motorcycle, knowing some drivers have a cell phone in their hand, is NERVE RACKING.
Regarding your motorcycle story, when I first got mine I talked with a guy who rode his all the time and everywhere. He told me that he had had three bad accidents in all his years of riding. He said that every one of them was on a day that he felt "confident" of his skills on a bike. He told me that if he walked into his garage and felt "confident" about his bike, that was the day he drove his pickup. If he walked into his garage and his stomach tightened up when he looked at his bike, he would get on it and go. I got mine, and rode it everywhere and in all weather. It was my commuter, as you said yours was. I only had one accident over all the miles I rode (20,000 in one year alone). And it was on a day I felt "confident". My accident wasn't all that bad, but I remembered what I was told by that guy and I thought "he was right". I made a trapezoidal knee guard for it, out of gun barrel tubing, and mounted it to the frame. The angle was steep enough to keep the bike from being able to pin me under it if on its side. I never had to rely on it, although I came close to your maneuvers when a "little old lady" pulled out in front of me one time, but the guy I eventually sold it to told me my knee guard "worked perfectly" when he got caught in a multicar pileup. He told me that the guard was only bent slightly and the rear signal light was destroyed. The car he hit had to replace bumper, trunk lid and quarter panel. Of course, the pileup had already destroyed the front of the car he hit. He was able to walk away. I firmly believe that motorcycles have the potential to be the safest vehicles on the road (better visibility, better maneuverability, quicker stopping), but in practice they tend to be risky transportation – primarily from other drivers, but also from occasional overconfidence. You have made the same choice I did. There comes a time when personal responsibility requires you to make responsible decisions for those important to you. While I will always love cycles, I won't ride one everywhere anymore – only in selected areas and venues.
1st time seeing a Duracell car battery.
I recently replaced the battery in my truck. In doing so I did realize that the negative terminal had a seized nut, and could not be tightened. Therefore, I did end up replacing the bolt and the nut with new. But, I did not scrub down the terminals. I have noticed that the dash lights on my truck appear to flicker with no consistency. I was hoping that the new battery would Rectify this issue, it did not. I have noticed that the AC at times will drag down, and then jump back up to normal fan speed. I am hoping when I take the terminals off and clean them this will rectify the issue.
Same reason I sold my Harley , wanted to live also.
You know Ray, I just made the decision to sell mine and I've been riding 30 years. My reason is primarily the new texting whule driving epidemic. Scary how fast things can happen and to be honest, I don't feel safe in vehicles nowadays 😕
I think you found the problem. I would have checked the fluid condition of the trans, too. Even if it wasn't related to the problem, it's possible that it needed service since the truck is used for towing and few people service them properly. As for your bike rant, thanks for sharing that. I'm glad you're okay.
It's amazing how loose battery terminals can cause major problems. Being a truck driver for 30yrs turned me off of bikes.
Seen way to many yellow blankets on the side of the road. And a twisted up bike nor far away.

Your story, wouldn't the charging system kick in and keep the light going, if you lost battery connection??
