I saw one that was almost black on an old friend's Chevy Trailblazer. She was taking it for regular oil changes and they were supposedly checking it everytime she took it in to a franchise shop. I replaced it and showed it to her. She took it in there and showed them it and had the receipts saying they checked it everytime. That was the last time she did business with them.
Ever seen a 460 suck the paper filter so hard it came unravelled? A motor coach climbing a mountain needs a K+N. It's ability to pull air can overcome a filter at WOT. Keep it sustained for the mountain? It will pull and pull till it just lets loose in it's airbox. F-53 chassis was the application. 99 I believe.
That's bad but just wait till you been doing this for 30 years and you will see some nasty things that will make you wonder how in the hell is this even working I seen mice nest and shit and piss in the entire air box tubes and intake manifold down into the engine the smell made me puke and you could smell it in the car but technically the engine should not have even cranked but they drove it like that I removed dead mice baby mice

around 2013, had an old cat loader come in on a float from a remote property 250km away because it wouldnt start. Machine didnt even make it off the float, I found the air filter was solid with dirt and it had a date of 1994 written on it. New air filter and away she went haha, worst one ive ever seen and I work in mining

Dude, you change your air filter every three oil changes.( I fear how often you change the oil). Not every three years. lol
