There are several reason why but number one they are typically wrong and two it ends up costing you more money in the end. Sure they get lucky once in a while but why not just have it diagnosed by an actual mechanic? I dunno, maybe I am crazy...

How are you disabling the fuel injector during the diagnostic?
most people have their check engine light are cheap and want to fix it themselves by throw parts at it, lol

I am not a car mechanic, nor do I work on my own car. I am one of the great car enthusiasts that brings the car to a shop and says "please fix it".
Your videos help me massively to understand what they do with my car, understand the stuff that needs to be done and especially WHY the prices are what they are.
It helped me a ton to describe problems better, give more information to my mechanics in order to drill down on stuff.
I was fortunate recently that when I was getting a common error code on my 2014 Enclave that I took it in for a proper diagnosis. Turned out to be a broken wire and not one of the other 4 very common causes for this same problem. Definitely could have cost some money with the parts cannon if I didn't get a good diagnosis first.
Eric. Audio issues. Not that you will ever get to this comment but I have to bring up your audio issues. I watch a lot of other channels without any issues at all but yours for some reason is full of them. The audio just drops off and we can no longer hear what you are saying. My best guess is that it has to do with your mic.

Scanning for codes is the easy part. The real job is figuring out what caused it. A lot of people don't understand that.
Unfortunately way to many shops don't take the time like you do and just load the parts canon. Then the customer is in the exact same boat as when they arrived at the shop only difference is they are around 300 lighter in the wallet.
I think explaining yourself is sorta the idea on a car fixing vid. Otherwise, it's a guy standing there saying 'This car was broken, so I fixed it. I don't feel I have to explain myself.'
Instead of looking at it as resistance whereby current goes down when resistance goes up you, you can look at it as conductance (1/resistance) here current goes up when conductance goes up.
I cant lie they got me too…first month of driving I get a check engine light for the 02 sensor voltage not nominal or whatever, cause ended up being a bad catalytic converter but they told me I needed an 02 sensor, sold it to me, and when I asked them to put it on they said we dont do those here lol it was the start of me working on cars myself, and never getting scammed again

I guess, people think they are beating the system by bringing parts to a shop, because they think the shop marks up parts. I dont markup parts at my shop. I had a customer last year with this thought in mind bring me, a water pump, intake manifold, Demon Carb, and an engine and trans to put in his Monte Carlo. Sadly the engine had a blown head gasket that was discovered after it was put in, but also the intake, water pump, and transmission were wrong for the car. The intake and water pump had to be repurchased, and the driveshaft shortened to work with tranny. Im just doing as Im told. If you are going to lead, be a proper leader and take in even more info. Itll happen again with another customer soon.

People think the computer is there to tell them what is wrong, its not, its there to suggest what is wrong. Its up to the tech to sort out what it means. Ive seen engines running rough with no DTC in ECM. Obviously the ECM cant tell you everything
Yes, when I was a MUCH younger person I did all my own auto repair work, but once I got rid of my '65 ford Galaxie 500, 390 Windsor, (I don't remember what year I replaced it) they were just starting to get into more computerized ignition systems and then started adding all sorts of sensors for emission control etc., I started having the professionals do the few repairs that I needed. There were too many circuits controlling other circuits and I could not afford the tools to diagnose it, plus, I was starting a family about that time. No more time for tinkering. Love your channel.
I used to work for Oreillys and do not trust anybody behind the counter. They pay minimum wage, and hire anybody that can walk and talk. Best to just take your car to mechanic you know and trust.
As an Advance employee…1)I loathe doing 'money light scans'!!!! 2)The customer never understands its not a 100% directory to a certain part. 3)Customers hardly ever understand the 'No refund on installed electrical components'!!! I always tell them to take their vehicle to a 'Qualified Auto Technician ' before making a purchase.

Worked at AZ while in tech school. Laughed at coworkers selling o2 sensors and maf sensors. I would have a line of people asking for me to look at their codes. Usually pointed people in the right direction. I see the benefit for people to have their codes read so that can chuck parts at it. But it is for sure a misleading system. Also when the customer gives up the codes have likly been cleared including the snapshot data and the counts which makes it harder for the tech to diagnose.

I work at O'Reilly and when i do a check engine light all i do is take the code that pops up. Run it through a 3rd party vendor we use for codes and give the customer the print out and refuse to tell them exactly what's wrong with the car because im not a certified mechanic so i just say that this will just help the Certified Mechanic obtain the information and not waste time because i don't want a mad customer i was a happy customer that knows i will never sell them a part they don't need or the wrong one.

Youโre nicer than I am, or at least less jaded. I got so tired of people bringing in their cars after having it โdiagnosedโ by having the codes scanned somewhere (or by themselves) and told to replace a part, even if I suspected the โdiagnosisโ was not accurate. Iโd go to the customer with evidence that the โdiagnosisโ wasnโt correct only to have the customer question my intelligence, accuse me of trying to rip them off, insult and yell at me. I got tired of it so I just got to the point where Iโd shotgun the parts they wanted with no diagnosis, clear the codes, roll it out of the shop (usually still broken), charge for the repair that they requested and tell them to bring it back when they actually wanted it fixed. Itโs not my job to convince people that they are being screwed over by the guy at the parts store that doesnโt know anything about cars, and it sure isnโt my my job to be belittled by customers with no manners. Iโll let them figure it out through experience. Those โfree diagnosisโ have done so much to cheapen our industry by giving people the expectation that a job which requires a lot of experience, expertise, intelligence and a huge investment in tools should be done for free.

Even shops get it wrong!! Dropped my car off at a local "reputable" shop. (so I thought) to diagnose misfires when my car warms up and I stop at a traffic light or stop at a store for 15 min and restart. Car runs great when cold. They had my car two days and told me the coils and plugs needed to be replaced. They said all 8 cylinders were misfiring? Parts, diagnoses and labor was $850. (dealer parts) They said the car runs great and was ready for pickup. I drove out of the lot and 6 miles down the road the car starts misfiring again.(it warmed up) It was running just as bad as when I dropped it off!! Now I have to bring it back!! I can go on all day, but I have to question their diagnostic skills or lack of them!! Even shops with hundreds of great reviews and a good local reputation FAIL!!

Since I make no claims as a mechanic, but a fair parts changer, I will have to defend some of us who are trying to save a buck with a new or used parts cannon. We all can't afford shop time, or even work around their schedule. Dropping off your only ride to a shop that may or may not get to your vehicle in the time agree'd upon, yada, yada, yada. Point being, if I can get a quick diag, replace the part and keep on truckin, chances are, that is what is gonna happen. Not knockin real mechanics, but even though I may shoot myself in the foot now and again, I will give it my best shot with what info I can get. And just because I choose this method, does not mean I do shoddy work. Now if you have no skills, no tools, no friends and a pocket full of dead presidents, by all means, hire the best mechanic you can afford. I will never run anybody down for tryin. We raced for 12 years, I own several Harleys. I know how to turn a wrench, but it does not make me a car mechanic. Eric is an awesome car mechanic, and it always amazes me how many in the comments section seem to know how to do it better. Although I'll have to admit, I have never heard one gripe about Mrs O's cookin. Food for thought…

Hey buddy, I've been in the trade for years and yes I agree what we do isn't rocket science but it IS beyond the scope of the Johnny DIY'r. Videos like yours, like Rainman's are honest techs giving honest solid advice to people that happen to wander onto Youtube looking for help. Finding honest techs to listen to is indefensible advice. Yourself and other techs try the best we can to limit damage to our profession but you and again Ray take the time almost daily to video the diag and the repair. Don't knock the time you take to do these vids and explain what going on and how to do it. Some techs aren't bad, I try to believe they had bad apprenticeships and mechs that just tired of what they do. You're doing it right my friend and keep the masses informed! I don't have time to record my repairs and nor do I want to, so your channel and others are needed. Keep the dark side down brother!!

The only problem is that there are many technicians out there that have the same intelligence as the guy at the parts store. They will break out the same exact parts cannon. Many of those lazy techs inhabit the dealerships.

As a guy that works at an auto parts store, (the guys in green) I read the codes, all the codes and explain what each code means and if there is more than one they are probably related. I this case seeing the misfire code and the injector code I would have recommended a mechanic look at it cause I would have guessed broken wire or bad injector. Defiantly not a coil or plug. If it was just a misfire code for the number 4 I would have suggested plugs, if that don't fix it then coil. If that don't fix it, then you need a mechanic. I watch all your video's just so I can be informed about what to suggest in order to do my job better. Not just wing parts like I'm paid to do. I get more repeat customers cause I steered them in the right direction instead of doing the parts cannon.
My service writer should be working at an auto parts store. You explained my thought process exactly when I'm work. For instance if we have a p0301 code he'll be like plugs and coils before I get a chance to actually diagnose it. It's rather frustrating. I like to figure out why and have a definitive answer for the customer. Keep up the great work Eric!

I worked for the โGreenโ guys for around 8 years. I hated doing check engine light scans. People expected us to be able to tell them what was wrong , and how to fix it.
Idgaf if my SM, DM or RM would write me up. I would NEVER sell a customer parts based off of a check engine light code. Iโd tell the customer the code, explain what it could be and always say – โif you donโt have the proper tools, skills and experience to correctly diagnose it, please take it to a shop. I am not a mechanic and this is only an aid to assist youโ
Some customers loved I was honest with them. Others hated me. They wanted a fix for fee and wanted me to tell them how to do it.
Iโm a DIYer on the side. Iโll fix family/closed friends cars. If I donโt know what Iโm doing – Iโll tell them. Take it to a shop. I know a few good mom and pop shops in the area thatโll treat you right.
The Zonies across the street from the last store I worked would sell parts from their code scanner and I hated that they did it. Horrible business practice.

never trust junk chinese electrical parts from said parts stores as they are inferior to an OEM junkyard part, like a coil for a 3.8L GM
My garage will not install customers' parts for liability reasons plus he does not get to mark them up and take a little profit. I checked the NAPA price on a Caravan rear wheel bearing that he installed and it was marked up $50 on my bill but I said nothing as he has overhead.
Having a clear picture of whatโs happening is never a waste of time. But field diagnostics is 50% of my job so Iโm biased.
Eric, Great work, "break-it all the way down to the problem" I did a similar Jeep with the same issue.
Two weeks later another injector failed, changed it, drove it until the monitors reset, except evap., shipped it.
More than a month went by & it came back with an injector imbalance code. The two injectors I previously installed
were from Jeep! "Long story short" I ended-up changing all the injectors, 6 new ones. The two original ones I installed
turned-out to be different resistance than the 6 new ones. The dealer sent the wrong parts the first time! Lucky me!!!

I think the funniest part of this is that with a new coil and clean plugs, perhaps it would have run a little better for a while. A slightly stronger spark and a better plug might have gotten the misfires just under the limit for the check engine light, and your customer would think it was "fixed". Over time though, it would return. Great diag in catching that there was two codes and two possible solutions, and then narrowing it to one.
I work at advanced auto, we don't diagnose anything. Give em a code and send em packin…

What was the point of video if not to explain your diagnosis rationale?
I work at the aforementioned auto parts company all to often customers think that OBD II scanner will tell them that magic answer ,on what to buy to repair their car. I often tell them that I do not have a crystal ball and can only tell them what the code reported was. Even after I tell them there might be a few different reasons for the code setting I.E a misfire code they want to buy spark plugs,Ok fine I'll sell you some but if doesn't fix your problem your stuck with them, and some spark plugs are getting very expensive. I mentioned your channel numerous times if they want to see what goes into making a proper diag,not just firing the parts cannon at it and see what sticks. I also caution the younger members at my place not to push parts based on a code but to give the customer good info ,and have the customer see a well qualified mechanic. Not just some guy who can replace parts.
At 100,000 miles, it might be time to all the injectors out for a rebuild, or replace them. They were all looking a bit mismatched. While you're in there…

Hi Eric and the lovely Mrs.O., The only reason to me for you to explain is to teach, anybody that questions you theory would soon learn that you are not a parts changer and you always go as far as needed to inform the customer what needs to be done to repair the vehicle right the first time. Doing things twice cost time and money and you may lose a customer. I'm not a young man and I learn every time I watch this channel. I also retired in this field after 50 yrs. So thank you Eric!!
If we only knew how many parts were sold at auto parts stores by them scanning codes and not having a clue as to what's really wrong with the vehicle. I see the results of it all the time.
As soon as someone starts asking me about a car problem, I immediately assume theyโre tightwads who donโt want to pay an actual technician.
I feel bad for whichever shop they end up going to because theyโll probably lowball the phuck out of them on price, needlessly stressing them out in the process.

Eric I truly believe you are the guy to go to when my car has problems I am so sad that I do not live in your area I live in North Carolina so so sad but you are number one when it comes to diagnosing and finding out problems , God-bless you, your business and your family.
You know that if you shrug your shoulders and just comply with his order to replace the coil and plugs, you'll still get blamed EVEN if the bad diagnosis is not on you. And some customers will trash talk your effort to all his friends, deflecting and forgetting his role in the debacle. So, if I owned a shop that had more than enough business, I'd probably tell people that diagnosis is mandatory if they want me to turn the wrenches. I find great irony in the way people don't want to pay the most economical and cost effective part of auto repair, diagnosis. Compared to that, turning wrenches is relatively easy.
