Just did all this in my ES330. 20yo crank pulley bolts from the factory are no joke.
as always good work
Could you make an engine have VVT using 2-3 electrical belt tensioners? (3 if you want to adjust both exhaust and intake timing) Basically removing slack from one side of each cam and adding it to the other side of each cam
Some of those magnetic mechanics gloves may save you from dropping so many bolts. I would think most right handed guys would get a lot of use from the glove on the left hand. It may save lots of time and energy searching and bending over for dropped fasteners over years of doing that work.
I remember in college, it was impossible to get the timing right… You was always off by about half a tooth. Maybe it's because the belts was stretched as we never used to refit new parts to the training cars.
I can't believe someone actually got paid to engineer that thing. Freaking sadists man, some messed up stuff.
Watching that gasket surface getting prepped was 110% spine-chilling/goosebump-inducing beauty.
Hey Ray when you first did that uh-huh bit it sounded just like Austin Powers man of mystery lol videos are awesome keep them up have a great day!
Brings back bad memories of changing timing belts in my youth. Now I pay someone else to do it. Hopefully as well as you do.
Angular pry bar or adjustable ladies slipper… You make the call… 😎
I like hdr portions and must be a pricey repair that’s a lot of labor nice quick work for you
Classic 3MZ 💪
Wow took you 58 minutes. My locale shop takes two days. LOL.
Too much oil on your hands, needs more break cleaner to improve friction coefficient lol
Looks like a Gates timing belt kit – have you been happy with those? Been reading a lot of folks claiming issues with the more recent kits from them (the ones sourced from China) – I have been using an Aisin kit on the two Honda 3.5's I have done the past year (wifes Odyssey, daughters Pilot) and really like that kit
THANK GOODNESS for the POWER TOOLS ??????
Crazy.
Gravity seems to be Ray's own worse enemy
that belt has more cracks than a crack den has meth addicts
Up next America’s Got Talent, Rainman Ray singing the oldies but goodies, or not. But keep wrenching, that’s your talent sir. Thanks for sharing.
You finally got to fix something.
I was working on my 94 cavalier in the driveway as a teen. I played a bolt from a cover and gravity took over. In the garage, all my dad (30+ yr aircraft mechanic) heard was an unmistakable ting, ting followed by the universal adjective. Without missing a beat, he asks where it landed
Unbelievable
thank ray great video I have the same car this job is tight..
Hard to believe anyone would go that far in without cleaning up the sealing surfaces, AND reinstall the old timing belt…
An insane amount of work just to replace a water pump. And why a timing belt? The engineer who designed this must have had something against mechanics.
I was getting a soda from my frig, your phone rang and I was "doo-de-doo-de-doo-ing" in the kitchen.
Should of changed the cam seals? 🦭 🦭 🦭 🦭 🦭
Probably at least 150 engineers worked to design this car and I don't think any of them talked to each other. Just sayin…
This is one of my favorite videos! So many fiddly bits, engineering, brackets and studs. You also did a nice job of balancing detail with skips ahead for repetitive tasks. Great commentary on the previous mechanic too- critical without backing the bus over them, even after they mangling the bracket. Two questions: what was the total parts cost, and two, do you ever work on EVs? Your garage may not see them yet. Great channel.
WHACHU KNOW bout KC and the SUNSHINE BAND?
Noooo we need the instant gratification, (waiting for the part 2, head in hands )😄
Please don’t sing! You are a good mechanic.
Wow, that was easy — not. I'm from the points and distributor era. I seem to remember a water pump sitting on the front of the engine, basically out in the open.
HA haha 😄
All that work to get the water pump off?? Horrible engineering…..
Maybe the belt was not cracked when the other repair was performed ?
If you are DIY or you don’t do timing jobs on Toyotas very often… people should know that they should really get a cam tool for any V6 Toyota engine timing job. There is a tendency when you apply tension to the timing belt that that back side cam will jump a tooth and if you’re not watching for that, then you will be doing this job all over again. So get the cam tool and do it right the first time.
I see that Ray used some clips to hold the belt…. However I would have done starting with the first pulley so it would hold while lining up the belt for the second pulley, etc. vs. the way Ray did it … but to each their own.
Cant afford to do it right, but can always afford to do it twice.
Paul here. Love the ahum hum’s sounds like a doctor making a questionable move
The shit you have to go through to get a water pump off these days.
Green brush hurts ears new Audio hurts
I did this same job on my 2002 Lexus. The bolts on the cam shaft were unbelievably tight. Also. the two bolts on the tentioner can be striped by over tightening. I'm not the only one who did this.
I literally started on one of these Friday before I left work
Mucho grande bueno Senor
OMGosh I am soooo glad I am not the one who has to put this back together. I can not imagine being a mechanic.
When you were putting the timing belt on it, I remembered a trick with paper clips and 2 seconds later you put them on. I thought dang this guy reads minds. Lol! I like this type of belt set up, with the mounts. The bracket mounts have to be supported by a strut mount bar tool on VW engines. Very nice job! I wouldn't trust myself to this level of a job yet. I am surprised you didn't raise the car on the lift? Nice job!
Like a friggin surgeon. Great hands. I admit that I don't know crap about cars. But I appreciate watching a master at work at anything.
RESPECT!!!!
You need more pry bar. I need more cow bell.
It must have been a high gravity day Ray. That's what I blame it on. 😉
That engine is a pain to work on. I'm glad I'm just watching!
Thanks Ray. You have made up my mind to never buy a Rx330 with the stupidity of putting the water pump a common failure point so deep. In doing so making a few hundred dollar job into a fifteen hundred (or more) job.
My 2013 Explorer needed a water pump, and to do that, Ford dropped the entire front cradle down; engine, trans, and front suspension, still on the sub frame. Easiest way to do it, I was told. They did it in less than one day. Nutz!
Very smart using the clips!! Great Job!!
that's what she said
Oh the days of just removing the fan belt and 4-5 bolts and the water pump was off.
Damn, I need one of those gasket cleaning brushes. I use a razor blade to scrape the old gasket off of my engine block. It took a while too; I didn't want to damage the surface. been there and done that 4 years ago. ugh!
About 4 years ago I paid close to $1000 to have the complete timing belt service done on my Toyota Tundra with the 4.7 v8. I imagine this is just as expensive or more.
This is why I keep my 04 Cherokee up to snuff. My OCD is not allowing me to work on anyrhing where the engine sits 45degrees to the left. I would do it if I had to but, not worth the bloodpressure increase and sleepless nights just thinking about even doing the repair.
This channel certainly has the most dramatic presentation of Brakleen I've ever witnessed… At some point I expect a downloadable mp4 (or whatever) of that sound amongst his merch…
I was doing a 3.3L Avalon years ago, put the cam pullies and the idler pully on and was just about to start putting the timing belt on when I realized I forgot to put the inner cover on first, definitely a Doh moment, I was curious how long in actual hours did it take you to do the job?
What cordless ratchet do you use????
In addition to the idler and tensioner bearings and spring I always replaced the cam and crank seals. If the seals aren't leaking they will because of age and the belt will turn to mush and they'll blame you and cry warranty. Ask me how I know 🥴
i found myself putting new pads and rotors on the wifes nissan this morning, sprayed the front knuckles off, said "Nice And Shiny"…… thanks Ray.
Im watching oldest to newest
That pump bracket is sus. Lower bolt click, upper bolt no click.
I really want to take a 4×4 to the head of the guy that thought is was a good idea to run the water pump off a TIMING BELT!!!! Then turn it on the guy that designed a vehicle with so little space in the engine bay that the first guy had to come up with that idiotic idea in the first place!!!!
👍🏿👍🏿
Looks like someone used shellac on that gasket but with the metal/rubber gaskets you do not need to use shellac.
You might have been better off just taking.the entire engine out just kidding. Great job Ray
I’ll be replacing the water pump on my 57 tbird soon. It won’t be this hard.
You need a gravity assistant. He picks up everything you drop on the floor. OK maybe you don't need him yet but when your knees are gone at 60 you will.
would have been better off with a chain….LOL
Ray, any chance of a link for the gasket removal brushes? Great job by the way, honest effort and done correctly, impressive.
The most impressive thing to me is that Milwaukee right angle impact removing the cam pulley bolts! I've done this job, and I could not break those bolts loose for the life of me. I used a cam holding tool and 1/2 inch breaker bar with extension pipe. I just gave up on trying to replace the seals behind those cam pulleys and just did the water pump, belt, etc. Impressive tool to say the least. Also, my Kobalt 1/2 inch impact with a harmonic balancer socket made short work of that notorious lower bolt.
I've never seen a more difficult water pump to access 🤔
My name is Lantz Lackey Jr I’m from Clinton NC. I have watched several of your video’s and I want to say you are very good at your profession. If you were at a shop near me you would be my mechanic!! Thank you for being so honest and truthful and dedicated to doing the job right the first time. The shop you are currently working for is very fortunate to have a person of your character working for them. Thanks for reminding me that there are still true and honest hard working mechanics out there you just have to find them.
one major advantage to recording your work is that when installing all the things you've pulled off, you have a reference… I record most of my more complicated work on things just for that reason
Grasias
That what happen when peoples don’t maintain cooling every 3-4 years , it over heat and condenser close to radiator and put strain on compressor and orings . High pressure and heat kill the system , another thing Ray , there a battery 3/8” ratchet with long extension and the torque is 65ft/lbs
Ive watched so many of your vids the cars are starting to look the same 😳. Everything looks familiar 😅
That has to be one of the few modern Toyota engines with a timing belt.
Love your videos keep them going
Clever stuff there Ray it amazes me how you fix this stuff so easily great job 👍
Damn now I have to wait
I really like watching your videos, and you're super patient! Do you provide the vehicle owners with a link to their videos??
Midnight Mexican Motors repair facility put that original water pump in
Not sure why people hate HDR. HDR is awesome. For the record I love HDR
i'm worn out just from watching…… 😵💫
CSW uses the same trick with the clips on the belt to hold it in place. Great video Ray 👍 👍
"Pry bars fix everything"? Your forgetting angry pliers, engineer's hammer and vice grips!
Took me all day to watch this installment. Was working and could only watch a few moments at a time. Enjoyed the vid however. I do think you missed putting blue thread locker on one of the pulley bolts.
And if you have my luck, the socket split as soon as the tool truck left & gotta wait a week
Which Rigid Drill are you using?? I have a set but it never seems powerful enough to do the auto work. Thank you
Wow! You really know what U r doing!!!! Great work!!!
