Ray, "high idle" is actually better for diesels because it keeps varnish from forming on the cylinder walls, which is basically game over.

You ran this Hurricane with Military precision Ray. Kudos to you. I know where I'm coming when the zombie apocalypse hits. Nice piece of land you got there too. One question for anyone really, we all saw the power guys from other States. Do they all rally together and go where needed or does POTUS have to declare a state of emergency before they come in? Irregardless, a family well taken care of by the man who knows what he is doing. I really appreciate the Hurricane coverage for two reasons, one, we get to see it real time not News clips and two we get to see that Ray and family are fine. Great vlog Ray, love the Drone footage.

  37. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Marc Fox says:

Those metal clips between the sheets of roof sheathing are called "H" clips and they are there for two purposes, first like you said in your video they lock the two sheets of sheathing together in between the trusses. Second and just as important is there is two little bumps dimpled inside the clip that spaces the sheets of sheathing apart about an 1/8". The purpose of that is if you butted the sheets tightly together, when the roof deck gets hot it will cause the sheets to buckle and your roof will get all bumpy and wavy. Glad you made it through the hurricane and all is well. Was worried for a bit when you were offline.

  38. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Ivar Iversen says:

oh wow that roof though. Up here in my country we use 2×4" or even 2×6" depending on the length and angle but i guess that's cause it has to take the weight of snow.

  52. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Rob Peabo says:

I am so glad you are all safe! the aerial footage you posted shows the flooding and damage from a different perspective to the ground level footage. You certainly have work ahead of you. I guess the chicken coup is a priority, then dealing with the damaged trees.

It is good when everyone chips in to help. We have that here in Australia with cyclones, flooding and bushfires. People come from everywhere to help. Just as we send people to the USA, The USA has sent people here in natural disasters. Long live the relationships we have with our allies!

Hi Ray you've got a form of PTSD, sit down and write out your experience, make a point of writing all that you are thankful for. The idea is that you get the underlying thoughts and feelings into something concrete. Then burn it. The burning symbolizes your control over what has happened. You did exceptionally well.

  55. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars TonicofSonic says:

The way democrats have openly politicized people suffering from natural disasters is crazy.
That is one group of people who just plain suck at life.

We actually got the edges of that wet weather across the Atlantic last night in Manchester UK. I have rarely seen rain so intense and Manchester is famous for its wet weather. It only lasted for less than an hour but it gave me a small idea of just how bad you have had it. No wind though, thankfully. Hope all you good folks can soon get back to normality.

  61. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Ray Shutsa says:

The internet thanks you Rainman, you set the way by example for others to follow. God bless America 🇺🇸.

  64. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Roger MacDearmid says:

Those are called “H” clips, and are used almost universally in the construction industry. Not just in hurricane areas. They’re used to minimize, and spread out the flexing of the OSB (oriented strand board) roof sheathing, which in turn reduces separation of roofing materials, primarily shingles. It would be interesting to hear if you’ve seen trucks and crews from Manitoba Hydro working in the area. This is the electrical and natural gas utility in the province of Manitoba Canada. mH’s crews are famous for being highly skilled in these types of remediations. The province of Manitoba routinely sees extreme weather conditions that are not for the weak, to say the least. MH crews have travelled all over North America during times of need, lending expertise and resources. Thanks for chronicling this event for us, all while keeping yourself, your family, and your property safe.

  67. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Joseph Bucknavage says:

Over the years we've lost power many times often up to 4 days and usually in the winter. We're in the Poconos and I did all the generator tending, gas and water runs, and all the math problems constantly running through my head. You can prepare but sometimes the aftermath (see the math there) is where the real stress starts. You're doing a great job Ray but doing all this after stuff is also draining. I recognized two things. My wife couldn't do all the things that I and you have been doing to get through these emergencies. Second, someday I probably couldn't either. We get about two nor'easters every year. I had a whole house generator installed. I was 59 and a half and after a stroke and a bypass knew I couldn't go through the stress anymore. You're tired because you're still under stress. Get a whole house generator. When the wind blows and the power goes out, I count to ten. The power comes on and I go back to bed. If I'm not home I know my wife is safe. Do de Do shall return and all this will have been a dream. But you know better.

  68. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Peter Alpers says:

Ray, I am very glad that you and yours are all safe. You mentioned many of the downed trees were "Australian Pines". By the look of them I suggest they are Australian Eucalyptus trees (smooth grey bark, greyish green leaves, smell of eucalyptus oil) and if that is so they are notoriously vulnerable to high winds, which is why I would never have big ones on my property.

  69. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars SGT Tom Bailes says:

From a former tech, great prep all around and smart setup with the inverters. Thankful you and your family are safe. My folks are in Naples, thankfully, just far enough inland the water got to their doorstep and then started to recede. Still no power, but safe and have their little condo still.

  75. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars John Hayes says:

I am so thankful you and your awesome family are ok. Keep hanging in there brother. The worst is behind you now. I found out today from my neighbor who works for Alabama Power, he is a lineman, that his crew and multiple other crews from Tuscaloosa are on the way down there to help With the amount of tornadoes we have here, they are experts. Stay safe and get some rest Brother.

  76. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Neil the cable guy says:

The clips between the sheets on your roof are H-clips. At least that's what we used to call them back when I was in the house framing trade. The "beams" you were referring to are your rafters. When they are prefabbed like yours are, with the celling joists attached, they are called trusses. Here's hoping things get back to normal for you soon. I'm in Taiwan so I' m np stranger to Typhons; not at all fun.

  85. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Phil Thomas says:

  89. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Kevin Curry says:

Ray hope you get back to normal. We got the remnants of Ian come within 25 miles to the west of my house here in Graham NC with winds around 40 mph and a guess of 59 mph. I can not image double the speed for hours on in. The worst for me was Fran in 1996 in Raleigh NC and still it was only a two when that storm hit but was incredibly destructive.

Ray…on those hammered in metal tie ins…run 4 screws in each one…and get angled tie brackets like the 2×4 ones and run short screws on each tie in…it will solve your worries and cost way less…short screws so as not to Pentwater roof…Calif uses cement like shingles on roofs out here. they never need replacing from solar destruction…heavy too for wind resistance…we have gusts here to 50+ mph

  93. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Bill Sherman says:

Had gotten used to seeing a post from you nearly every day. Worried when I hadn't seen one in a bit but hey, you had a lot going on! Did anybody end up wearing a lampshade during the party?!? Did you go swimming again? Most importantly … glad to hear that you're okay! Adding an alternate alternator sounds like a spiffy idea!
