Customer Customer States Mechanic Fails Engine Transmission Gas Diesel off road race 4x4 street car daily driver scam dealership dealer technician how to
Oh no, it's maintenance Day for me, that is correct. I'm I'm getting back to my uh, my normal procedure I'm trying to do something that I need to do for myself or for my own stuff on Fridays because I have not touched my own goodies in weeks on a Friday gravity. So I have uh I have decided to perform some scheduled maintenance width. A little bit of an upgrade on my Uh 2007 Chevrolet Silverado 3500.
It's the dually right over there and what I have here is a diesel fuel filtration element for a Caterpillar. Now this does not go to my Duramax In fact, I may actually have a uh a Duramax filter around here somewhere I thought I did maybe not. Is it in the Vault of viscosity? Um no I wish Troy was here today. he could tell me where it was because he knows where all my stuff is I don't know where my stuff is but I don't see no, that's not it.
Okay, there it is. That's the uh, the OE unit. Let me show you here I'll pull this thing out and we see why I don't want to use it I mean I'm not saying it's not a good filter because it is. This is just an original grade OE style fuel filter for the Lbz's and LLY Duramaxes You can see it's got this huge hole in the bottom of it that's actually for a water in fuel uh sensor that will plug into one of the wiring harnesses on the truck.
but this guy screws into a manifold on the passenger side of the engine and then you screw in your sensor and then that is our fuel filter element for the Chevrolets I am going to replace this fuel filter element with this Caterpillar fuel filter element. Now if we look a little closer here stay, we can see also that the threads and uh, the circle the the seal rather are not the exact same sizes. So we're going to need to install an adapter in order to get this uh, this cat filter onto a Duramax engine because I really don't want to use this one right here and I know time is up the essence because my filter life monitor tells me that it's at like 15 20 which is actually a little bit lower than I normally like. So I'm gonna go ahead and swing the truck into the shop here don't need that and we're going to remove the factory fuel filter.
I'm going to install this adapter plate up onto the fuel filter housing in with this adapter plate. I'll be able to install Caterpillar diesel engine, heavy duty fuel filters and what else was in this box Here we we have some new O-rings so this is the ring that's going to go on the top of our adapter right here and I believe one of these two goes at the inside and then another one is going to go I don't know where the other one goes, we'll figure it out I'll read the uh the instructions that aren't here. okay and I believe this right here is designed to space out the uh, the factory fuel filter housing mounting plate because this larger filter doesn't clear something. or I mean maybe I don't need it.
but I understand that every one of these adapters comes with this little spacer and some bolts. so if I need it, I'll use it. If I don't need it, then I won't use it. So let's go outside, fetch the truck, get the old filter off, and then we'll get started. And yes, my door was found wide open as we walked out here. Uh, there was no reason for that whatsoever except I came out and I looked uh in the truck for that filter box because I thought it was here and it is not. So put a starting Z engine. we're gonna spin her around, nose it in, and then we'll get this filter removed, nosing it on in.
Let's creeper up here. We don't need to lift it up, so right here is probably good powering down. Oh you know what? I forgot we have not done a mileage update on this unit in quite some time. Let's check.
uh, it's the oil life 60 fuel filter. like five percent? that's not okay I went way too long and our uh active odometer tells us the mileage is 231 757 miles. so let us pop in the hood again. Fuel filters on the right hand side Over Yonder somewhere.
let's see here. Hello! Duramax with two alternators. For those of you who are newish here and have not seen uh, this particular modification I equipped this truck with the secondary alternator so we've got a 145 amp regular alternator. We've got another 145 amp Factory alternator that is wired in with it with uh some larger cable upgrades.
We can talk about that a little bit more later if uh, if time permits because I do have a reason that this thing exists. Pretty cool. I Think you guys might like it. Hang on, Hey, you know what? I'm just going to get this out of the way because I've said too much.
so back here in my toolbox. I Don't have any tools? What is here? See what? Let's climb up there. I'll show you what is back here is a supplementary electrical power supply system that Uh is designed for off-grid use uh, and or emergency use. For example, if we have a hurricane and we have no electricity for Uh for several days or even a week or so, I have the ability to store a lot of electron runs in our box right here and then I can run.
Uh, I've got two inverters here. There's that blue one down there that's an 8 000 Peak 4000 RMS inverter and then this one I think is a 4000, Peak 2000, RMS or 2000 Peak 1000. RMS So anyway, I've got uh, quite a bit of electrical power at my disposal and I've got quite a bit of electrical storage inside of this heavy duty. D4 AGM deep cycle battery right here.
See that guy. now. last time some of you guys saw this I had a regular lead acid in here and I had planned to add a second lead acid. The problem was is two of those lead acids weigh more than this battery did and they had about half as much power.
So I ended up upgrading to this giant D4 battery from Uh I think it's a renergy battery like the solar panel people stuck that thing in here. So basically what I have here is power at my disposal. Whenever I want off of two power inverters, check that out! I think it's pretty cool. So I can run the 4 000 Watts here and about a thousand Watts here. Both of those are sine wave inverters. They're not dirty Square wave power. They produce a nice psilocidal wave of electricity. Psilocyanal is that the right word? Psilocyanal? Yeah.
sine wave siliconal. I Don't know words. not today. regardless.
so I've got a battery here. I've got inverters here now. The magic happens with that dual alternator up, right? because I have this golf cart motor solenoid right here. So we have the batteries in the front of the truck connecting with this cable here to this solenoid.
If I were to energize this solenoid, it'll close the contacts and then connect this power supply system to the Dual alternator system up front. Now that second alternator is not exclusively designed to charge this system here, but it is running uh in parallel with the existing alternator on the truck. So when I whenever the truck has regular high high demand, that other alternator will take up the slack because it's basically two small alternators acting as one big alternator. don't tell Scotty No, that was a joke.
That was a joke. Don't get mad at me. It's okay, it's okay. you can tell Scotty if you want to, but he does not agree with two alternators running at the same time.
I Don't know why because I can run 100 alternators at once if I like it I Don't think that they work against each other. One other cool feature that I'm going to utilize with this little system here is actually at my house. So yeah, I have a well house And on top of that well house. I've got two, four, six, eight, uh, three, six, eight hundred.
I have 1400 watts of solar panel on top of my well house and those things are just running a, uh, like a grid tie inverter. It's similar to this, except you don't plug appliances into it, you just plug it into your wall and it effectively matches the voltage at your power supply which is the wall and then it will just kind of backfeed some current whatever is available from the solar panels into the grid of your house and that can actually slow down the uh, the meter or slow down the amount of electricity that is coming into the house from the meter. So effectively I've got panels reducing my electric bill. Now where that comes into play with this situation here is: I can disconnect my panel Bank from my well house and I can probably I think I'll just get like an auxiliary cable and I can plug those panels into a solar charge controller which I will Mount inside of this unit somewhere and then I can use that charge controller to manage our maintain charge on this battery right here.
So so again, if we're in a grid down situation for any period of time, I can park the truck next to my well house I can plug the solar panels into the charge controller and into the batteries battery and it will maintain a charge level on this battery so I can draw a light load of nearly indefinitely should the situation arise where I have to draw a whole bunch of load for a long time like run the well and get some water pressure going, maybe run an AC unit if it's remarkably hot or something like that. What I can then do is start the engine on the truck I can click over to that solenoid which will tie this battery system into the charging system on the truck and then I can use the alternators and the vehicle's engine to produce electricity for my inverters out back. Now, one clever way that I've gone about achieving that with some efficiency is: I have utilized a feature on the Duramax Ecms that when these engines were installed in a medium duty platform like a tow truck or a box truck, they featured a high idle that was accessible with the cruise control and I have accessed and modified this truck to use that high idle feature with this button right here. So if I hit that button, watch the idle right there. idle is going to jump up. see that and then if I hit my cruise button I think it's that one that's all the way high idle. Hang on. We don't want that one.
We want the medium. stage two, there's level two and then this one that's level three. I don't think we need level three. Level one or two should be.
uh, just fine. And one other cool addition. Let's shut her down. One other cool little thing that I engineered on this particular setup is a 40 millimeter under drive or I'm sorry overdrive pulley.
This is pulley is smaller than the one that is supposed to be on it. See that size right there. I think that's like a 62 millimeter 57. Maybe something like that.
Regardless, this pulley is larger than this pulley right here. Now what that's going to cause? is that idle speed? This alternator shaft is actually going to spin faster, so it's going to bring it up to its uh output range. um, at idle more efficiently than that alternator will? Uh, yes. Eventually I will change out that pulley there with another one of these overdrive pulleys.
I Just don't have the tool to pull that clutch pulley off I'll show you what I mean if we pop this little cover off of here, Come here. Cover Um off. I Just cut my fingernails now. I don't have any tools built into my flanges? You gotta see that right there.
That's a little clutch on the end of this pulley here. All right, the pulley is a clutch rather. um, it's a noise reduction thing and probably a fuel efficiency thing. Uh.
Regardless, I don't think I need it for what I'm doing. so I do need to get the puller to remove that pulley and once that one comes off, I can swap it out with another one of these uh, uh, 40 mil pulleys, the overdrive units, and then both alternators will be at Peak Performance down at lower engine speeds. Additionally I Feel like it's not necessary to have that big pulley on this because this is a diesel and it rides down the interstate at like 1800? RPM So I don't need a faster or a slower spinning pulley to uh to bring down alternator speed because it's uh, it actually sits lower than I think it should be. So uh, that's not even the topic of the video. What we need to do is get back on track, go over here and get a hold of our fuel filter assembly, which is located down there behind this battery under the banks intake. So what? I'm going to do? Get this mass airflow sensor disconnected here. Pull that guy off and we're gonna unclamp it here. We're gonna unbolt the air filter right here.
It's going to give us a little bit of access down here to that filter and we can get that thing removed. So we're not going to need much in the way of tools for this job. Just uh, an eight millimeter socket and a couple of screwdrivers to get us most of the way there. We've got to pull off these stainless steel, uh, big screws on the top of the banks intake.
We'll set those guys aside and again, we'll have to pull that clamp off. It's not my day today. Not believe I Just did that. Do you guys see that? I Just threw my screwdriver for no reason? Genius! Super Genius Let's pull these guys out right now and they will fall out of this lid.
So I Am going to fully recover these screws I don't want to try to Source Replacements. Get rid of that guy. Eight mils coming in instead. Who's that plant should be? good? Pick this thing up.
Tell you what. Pull this unit up. We have to mine the filter because the filter stays attached to the bottom of the lid. There huge filter assembly so this thing aside on the ground.
Okay so as we just talked about, that is our Factory fuel filter. That's the original design, this is the bracket for the filter and of course we have the lines uh coming into and going out of the unit down below which screws into the filter. We have the water in fuel sensor and unfortunately with this modification we will have to Omit future use of the water in fuel sensor if I can even unplug the thing hard to reach from up top. Usually I will reach in and do these from the uh the wheel well and uh, not make a video about it.
I mean I've made a couple videos about these over the over the past, maybe like two years or whatever but I usually just do it from down below. All right. moving in a little closer I'm going to reach up from through the fender with some oil filter pliers and I'm gonna get a hold of this filter body and unscrew this unit. so so bear with me while I go in through this wheel right here.
Wells pulled back some on the filter. Turn there we go. I Think that's probably good I can reach it by hand now or turn it by hand rather pull that wire up and out of the way. Let's go ahead and unscrew unthread this unit.
drop it down some and sometimes you can pull these out through the top. It does not come out the top. on my particular truck. there's too much stuff in the way up here, so I need to reach back in through the bottom, fetch the filter and pull it out. Alrighty, let's climb out of here real quick. over to the oil drain. Got our old filter. We can go ahead and dump this out.
It's lime flavored this time. couldn't get any. Cherry I mean like I said this. uh, fuel level sensor.
That thing's gonna stay put. We're not going to use it, but I will not throw this away. I'm going to take this thing out and save it just in case. I Want to switch back to the regular Delco style filters? Okay, but what we're going to need to do is prep that installation bracket.
Over Yonder In the Box I Need to prep that. Just screw into the filter housing on the vehicle now. I Noticed that package of O-rings There we've got. There's a real thick one, a not so thick one, and then this larger one for the outside diameter.
right here. there's one large one there, and then this right here is an integrated I think that's integrated into the filter I Don't know. Let's check the other filter to see if that little seal comes with it. Maybe it does.
That might be part of the uh, the bracket device over there the mount. Check that old filter right here real quick. and that filter does indeed have that rubber insert. Okay, so that's just part of the filter.
Meaning we've got a one o-ring This one is for the fuel water separator down there at the bottom. That's that. O-rings And then this larger o-ring is the one that goes on top. So that answers the question.
That thing stays with the filter. Okay, so now what we need to determine is how this thing seals in chassis. And I think yeah, if you look down in there, there's a Groove Looks like there's a Groove for an O-ring to sit inside of. So we need to pick one of these O-rings Get it inside that little Groove and then that will be.
uh, what creates a seal? Okay, let me just take a feel down there. There's no rubber O-rings in that housing. Okay, that's fine. So I've taken some trash, took a box, and used it as a bench.
I Think that's uh, it'll work for now. I Need to get into this package. Did anyone ever wonder why mechanics always destroy the packaging in every single thing that they open? Because we're not going to waste the time to walk away to go get the right tool to open this? We'll just stab holes and things and tear it apart. That's why we don't use the zip lock feature on Ziploc bags to open them.
It's just not in our psyche. I Got a feeling that I don't need that big o-ring we'll see. stay flashlight. It's a screwdriver holder.
so I believe this guy just tucks into that Groove kind of loose feeling I Don't know. maybe it's the big one that goes in I'm gonna try the big one. yeah, that's that's. just kind of flopping around in there I Think the big one goes in there here. We'll pluck this out with a pocket screwdriver, pocket pry bar. Let's get behind it not scratching up the Finish What this one does. Get in the groove. Go into your groove that fits nice and tightly like okay, well let's see if it screws on.
maybe it will. Maybe it won't. Even if it does, it's gonna have to come back off because I still have to put the big uh, perimeter gasket on it. Give that a push.
All right. Yeah, okay, it's threading on. That's good. that's how she goes.
Pull this unit back out the flip-flop treatment and we'll get our larger diameter o-ring in. its Groove It's gonna be a two-handed operation. see I Can't do everything one-handed It doesn't always work out that way, especially this really, really tight fitting o-ring seal. Looks like it's got to get kind of kind of pressed in right here.
We're definitely going to need to apply some lubricant to these O-rings before installing it on the Uh on the bracket over there. That looks good. It's not wavy, it's running straight I'm good with that. Okay, I know where the little o-ring goes.
It has to go over that because we need something on the filter to separate the uh the clean side. This is the output side versus the dirty side. So I think that's the right way. Yeah, dirty goes in through the holes and then clean comes out through the center one of the two.
Either way, you need to separate those two so the two sides of the filter don't communicate at threads. So that tells me that this is just gonna go right down here at the bottom of these threads. That way, when the filter is in place, that seal can create the seal between the two compartments. I Think that's how that's going to work.
Okay, let's take this off for now. Stay So I Was looking at the clearance between the factory filter and this cat filter and one thing to notice is that this cat filter is going to stick out probably six inches farther than the OE It's gonna stick down because of that. I Think the filter body is going to run into some wires or some hoses hence this little spacer device. And since it came with the kit, we're just going to go ahead and install the spacer.
So all we need to do is pull out two bolts and then replace it with two of these longer bolts that are in the package and then drop the spacer down in and then that will move the entire filter bracket away from using some I think I don't really know I'm just a hypothesizing I don't have directions and it's It's a pretty clear-cut system, but still I don't have directions Anyway, back to the Uh, back over here to our engine side. Let's get in there with our wrenches and we need to take I believe it's that bolt and that boat. When you take those guys loose, replace them with the longer ones and then unpick thread this one all the way out. and then we'll grab that next one there. Let's keep on threading. Oh yeah, that's A that's much more shorter. Shorter or shorter. That's what it is.
Shorter? Yeah. Leverage. pull. All right.
Come here, that's tight. I Need a second, uh, second appendage here to get this one. I Don't have the strength. can't do it solo.
And why is that fire alarm still going off? Man, that's on there. Okay, you can get a straight line on it flaming. There we go. Nice good unclick on that one too.
Nice snap. Unthread this unit right here and so it doesn't fall out. We'll go ahead and get one of the larger bolts installed I Think that's actually too long. What was that other one? There's these ones here.
those are. yeah. I Think we actually just need the shorter ones to fit that spacer in. So then why do I have those big giant long ones right there? Come on out, Little bolt.
We don't need you anymore. Well, not right now. I'll probably need it later I Guarantee I'll need that thing later for something. that's why I say bolts.
You never know. Let's get this guy threaded in through the hole, up, over around through in. ETC Let's get you started right there. Good.
So now you can slide this thing that way and then drop that little spacer in just like so we can tighten her down. Clever. It's amazing what you can accomplish with an idea, some aluminum and a CNC machine. Isn't that something crazy and thickages? Okay, so we're tight.
that thing is in. Let us get the face plate set up and we can screw that thing in next. Now this is going uh, into my fuel pump. my high pressure pump and it's also going into my injectors.
So I'm going to make sure that there is no contaminants or debris inside of this filter housing. So we need to blow this thing out with some shop air because there's no way I'm going to let a piece of packing peanut foam or whatever blow up my fuel system because all it takes is a itty bitty little couple Micron pieces of contaminant. It'll ruin your day. What? It's probably good.
You're gonna give this a bit of a squirt with some lubricant in there I could use diesel fuel or dielectric, but can't. Lube was the plus thing that I had so that'll work just fine. It's not gonna hurt anything. and then a little bit on our big o-ring right here.
a little more. There we go. So now let's go get this thing screwed into the filter housing. I Want to make super duper sure I don't brush against anything and drop some sand or dirt into this adapter.
and I've also changed out my gloves with some fresh gloves so we just screw this guy in. Come on, hook up! You got to get past that big o-ring I'm putting a lot of up pressure on this. the uh, the factory filters do the same thing. You got to push up as you turn so you can walk that big o-ring into position and you reach around here this way and keep threading her in. How's it going? Yeah, she's getting tight. Bring your flashlight. Good. Wow, that's all I got.
That's that's all my flangy strength. Um I've seen these like people sell these things aftermarket sometimes and I see them with gouges on them from like filter pliers and whatnot. I'm not going to do that. uh, maybe a strap wrench.
Let's try that here. Let's try this strap wrench. It's a gear wrench unit. It's just got a strap that goes around your work piece and then you can attach a uh, like a socket to it right here and that socket right extension.
Rather, attach the extension to it. then you can turn this, uh, business end right here and that'll give you some leverage and some twisting force on the work. Let's try this thing. Slide it up and over.
It's not going to make full contact, but I think it should provide enough if I can get it lined up and on here. This is very awkward. I'm almost thinking I should have taken this uh, filter housing out of the truck. Oh well.
I'm not going to do that. We're just going to fiddle with this until it does what I want. Don't fall off Here we go. okay.
extension coming in. if it's the 3 8 and then a ratchet on top of that extension and then I can act on the wrench. I think this is so awkward as long as my strap doesn't slip off. I think we're good here.
the straps in position. let's get the ratchet back on the extension. Bear with me. No, but I'm not one to give up so we got one more attempt coming in.
I changed my extension so I can kind of use this extension to hang on to the tool and we may need to get more than just that one wrap around on the tool just to get some, uh, some friction on this unit. Here You can see why this, uh, the strap wrench tool is brand new and I never use it because it's not a user-friendly tool. really. Here we go.
there's a bite, not enough. a little bit more. There we go I saw it turned, that's tight. Okay, that's uh, probably not coming off with any uh ease anytime soon.
Now my issue is I did touch a lot of stuff down here so uh I'm gonna go come in from the bottom with that blow gun and just blow into the bottom of this cup just a little bit. Not enough to turn up a bunch of dirt. but in case I blew anything into uh or put any contaminants on those threads or the bottom of this unit, blow it out. That's good.
I need to check and make sure that O-ring didn't fall off of those threads and it has not. it is there. So now we can come back up through the wheel well again and we'll get the cat filter installed. Bear with me here.
we're reaching in foreign she is I got it and I did put some some lube on that O-ring as well on the filter. Here we go, screw that unit on but we're not done yet so that's tight. Clicks Okay, this next part. this is where people run into major issues.
Uh with these: Duramaxes See this device right here that is a priming plunger. What you need to do is operate this plunger. You pump it up and down. Up and down. Up and down. Up and down. and it's going to create a vacuum on the suction side. So it's going to pull in fuel from the fuel lines.
It's going to Prime that filter and then it's going to send fuel out that direction. uh into the intake line for the CP3 pump or the injection pump rather. But you can't just Pump It Up and pump it up and pump it up because there's air in there and that air has to go away. That air is going to leave via this little bleeder screw right here.
And this is the problem when it comes to uh, the Duramax fuel filter repair. There are many that, um, what they do is they either use a wrench or they use the wrong or a small too small of a screwdriver and they will break this plastic uh, plastic little bleeder screw right here so you have to be very careful to not break it or to use the the appropriate wrench in order to to remove it. Now do you see that fuel spray out of there? That's because of the pressure that I just created when I built. Uh when I pumped the primer ball.
So you close it again, we're gonna Pump It Up This Usually takes about three to four minutes, just keep pumping and pumping until you feel it get a little stiff. Seven, eight, nine, Ten pumps. Whatever. I felt fuel.
So let's crack it open air. Now we close it again. Pump It Up Air and we just repeat until we get fuel out of the top of this unit right here. And that's how we know all that.
the air has been purged from the filter. There's some fuel bubbly. Now let's say you go to operate this and you inadvertently strip out the top of this unit. or you round off the the hex on the on that bolt.
Or you tighten it too much and you break it off inside. which uh is also a very common possibility here. What we're going to do where Did We ought to fuel up first. Hang on.
too much fuel spilling everywhere. No, No, No. So let us pretend that we broke this thing off. Okay, what will happen is the threads will break off down inside that little hole right there and you can't get it out because the hex piece is gone.
Well, what you need to do is notice that it's hollow inside. You can take a small flat braided, flat bladed screwdriver or even a Torx bit and you shove it down inside that hole from the top side and then you can use that to back away the threads and extract the broken off piece. If you fail really bad or you gouge up the the aluminum threads in this, there are Replacements uh very readily available Replacements Most auto parts stores actually have them, but you can get either the plastic ones or you can also get a hold of a brass unit and I believe these ones they are actually these are uh a Dorman brass replacement. They're OE Solutions line The part number is 904-112 uh Hotel let's pee. What's P in the phonetic alphabet? I'm drawing a blank Hotel not Perry Pennsylvania uh Periwinkle, what is p It's gonna bother me I'll remember when we're done with this video anyway. I Used part number 904112 HP to replace uh these units with and I buy them in bulk I have like five or six of them here. They stay in my light bulb section just in case one of these breaks off because they they do break off quite a bit. so we saw there was diesel on the top of that.
Let's give this guy a couple more pumps here just to make sure all of our air is out and it is. That's good. Let's go ahead and closer. back off.
now. we don't need to make it super tight because the O-ring that is on that little fitting is what creates the seal. Just the O-ring got a whole bunch of torque. Anyway, now that we're sealed off, I'm gonna Pump It Up just to send some more fuel through the intake line to the pump because I'm sure there's a little bit of air in there, at least to send a little bit more fuel pressure in that's getting.
Rock Solid One more crack of the valve, make sure there's no air coming out and we're good. That's all. high pressure fuel. Okay, that'll do.
Lock that thing down. A bunch of tools just fell over so this is good to go. Let's back up some clean up our goodies and uh, we can go ahead and rent this stuff out. all this fuel spill that I got going on and then uh, we've been restocking Z Engine shiny dude? All right.
Next up, let's fetch the uh, the cold air banks intake. We'll get this thing back in position here and then restart flow sensor. where'd you go I Lost it? No really I lost my mass airflow I gotta do this. Fall down Yeah dude.
I got her. it was. It was down far. No worries.
Click that guy back in. there are four screws back into our lid. Very good. Beautiful.
All right. let's go back inside. we'll hit the key, restart this unit and also we need to reset that fuel filter life monitor business. I Don't think you can reset the fuel filter monitors while the engine is running.
So let's go ahead and scroll through the average economy fuel filter five percent. Yep, and we hit the little little arrow check mark, button, push and hold and it should X Out to zeros and then say 100 Yep. Fuel filter pipe reset Restarting the engine Okay, she is alive. Okay so now the maintenance is done I Want to go back to having some fun and tinkering with my uh, a little solar panel system backup power supply thing going on here.
We've noticed we've got this big old power strip in there and I installed that because it fit right there. no problem and I can do things like hook up battery chargers or an extension cord or kind of whatever I want now I have this power strip connected to this large inverter right here. That's the uh, the 4 000 watt inverter. Now we can see our battery hanging out inside of there is sitting at 13 volts. so that's a fully charged battery right now. What? I'm gonna do. We're gonna detach the uh, the power strip from the inverter I'm just going to plug it into this extension cord over here. Reason being is I would like to add this kilowatt meter right there.
That way we can see just how much power is actually being produced with a meter. So we're gonna plug that guy in. Power It Up And it's going to tell us all kinds of stuff. Here is our output voltage.
Here's volts: It'll tell us the amps coming out in AC it'll also convert to Watts It'll tell us the frequency see. right now we're producing AC 120 volts. at 60 hertz, which is normal and it can also track your total kilowatt consumption over a period of time. So what we're going to do? We're going to set that to Watts and I want to put that inverter to the test and the battery.
So all we need to do here next is: plug in the power strip. See that right there? Power strip? Plug it in. Get in there. Oh so now the power strip is live through the extension cord and we can monitor it with this meter right here later on.
So what I'm going to do is we're going to connect a whole bunch of stuff to this power strip and we're just going to see what kind of load we can put on that battery using that large inverter down there. We're not going to run the alternators, we're not going to run the engine, and we're not going to tie that battery into the front vehicle batteries yet. I Want to go ahead and add some loads to it? That way, we can also prove out once and for all that that second alternator is functioning and it does work. So let's grab some, uh, some nodes here.
We'll start with the fans. those are always a good load. Disconnect this unit, we'll go ahead and roll it on over and we'll plug this thing in first. Okay, shop fan, Let's go ahead and just power that off so we don't voltage shock the system here.
Run our cord through, plug it into one of the outlets and fan on. Oh, the reset button was reset. turn the switch off power on. Here we go.
All right. So now we've got a shot fan running off of the battery off of an inverter out of a toolbox on the back of the Silverado. Let's take a look at our consumption here and that thing's making a it's pulling 191 watts and 1.68 amps voltage has fallen to 115 and it's still producing the correct frequency. and if we look here, our battery voltage that thing Drew down to 12.5 So this battery is now at 12 and a half volts.
However, this is a 4 000 watt inverter and I want to run it to its maximum capacity. We're going to find the limit on this unit so let's plug in another fan, turn you to high and checking our oh that's on Volts right there volts fell down to 114.8 and we're at three and a half amps 400 watts. We got a long way to go. Next up, it's going to be Heat gun.
This thing is going to draw a huge load on that battery. Let's fire up the heat gun. I've never put a load this size on that inverter before I Barely ran a fan off of it when I put that inverter in. so let's add some more load to it. Let's get it. Uh, let's put on low position. One heat gun is Heating and our amps amp draw is at 9.6 amps now. So we're pulling a lot of power here.
We're making a thousand Watts 1100 Watts Let's step it up to Full Speed Ahead 15 1600, Watts 14.2 inch. You guys see that in our output voltage is falling to 111. All right and down below, the battery is drawn down to 11.1 volts. Okay, okay, let's uh, figure out how to safely put this thing somewhere.
It won't burn something down. We'll just leave it real. like not right there. right there.
Okay and again. 11.1 volts. Let's go ahead and start the engine. Go now.
Voltage Inside of the truck. We're making 14.1 and that is on our front battery system over here. 14.1 volts over here. Get back here.
We are still at a battery voltage of 11.1 volts. Okay, that is because we have not engaged the solenoid to tie the two systems together now. I Do not have a wire on this activation solenoid circuit right here. Uh, when you put Power to this, it's supposed to close the solenoid.
I Didn't run the wire yet to the switch in the dash. So what I can do is I can just take some power from our power supply wire under the hood. This one runs down through the frame rail and it connects to the batteries and we can go ahead and close this circuit with that. So now both alternators are tied into this battery bank and we are up to 12.1 volts.
Okay, so we gained a whole volt out of it. Whoa. Come here. It's like vibrating away here.
It just puts you just put that right there. Keep drawing that load and inside, we've drawn down to 13.9 Let's hit our high idle. Now we're idled up to 800 850. Yep, coming back.
Check 12-8 Fire back up all bolts. So we do have power coming back here. From up in the front, there is amps returning back to that back battery. Let's fire up some loads inside of the cabin.
We'll just run this whole system to maximum capacity. We'll go high beams, fog lights Bambi mode and then AC full blast still at 13-7 on our volt meter. confirmed with the one on the deck. The dash: We're making electricity while we're cranking out 11 .
let's add some more loads. There we go. Got another fan and another extension cord. Probably overrating or overloading this power strip, but it's okay.
11-7 0 noise going through 11-7 and our watt output is 1700 Watts We have a problem here though. my meter is blinking I Don't think my meter can take any more any more load to it. The Watt: 1600 amps, 15 amps Yeah, that's I Think that's Max for this meter is 15 amps. We'll shut down now.
Let this thing down. Stop blinking. Now we're down to 500 watts. Okay, voltage is coming back up now. What we're gonna do is we're going to keep an eye on our output voltage, our input voltage right there, and I'm going to disconnect our solenoid as I do that. Watch that voltage client or watch it fall Five four Yeah! so we are getting power from our front system. That's confirmed and if we were to go ahead and shut down all these loads, it turns off everything. Look you there coming right? back up.
13-3 20 volts output. This system is operating as designed. I'm gonna let this thing run for a while. It's hot inside, the fans are on.
We'll let that guy cool off I'd say that's proof of concept. if I can run. Oh what? I got one, two, three, three fans and a heater. I'm pretty sure I'm not overloading the alternator.
that's a fourth out or uh, inverter. it's a 4 000 watt inverter. I was pulling 1500 out of it. Uh, that's less than half of what it's rated at and this battery held on no problem.
We never fall but far below the 12 volt. Mark especially with an extra power supply. so that is a highly effective type of system configuration. I think and I like it and I built it and I'm proud of it and I'm glad that it works.
That's my proof of concept. And the cool part is is when I'm not running that system, my truck still has two alternators shut off Bandy mode we don't need don't need AC in here. That's good to go. Very nice By the way.
these kilowatt meters I think they're available at the Harbor Freight stores. um I will look and see if you can find these on Amazon and if you can, I will put a link down to these in the Uh in this video's description down below I think they're like 20 bucks or something like that I've got three of them. They're really cool meters. It's good to know how much power your appliances draw like I use it on my refrigerators I use it on my lights and stuff at home just because I like to know like how much current is running through that circuit checking voltage up to 13-6 So now the system up front is recharging this battery since uh, there is no load on the unit which is super cool.
let's go ahead and shut off our inverter there. Um, we'll disconnect this other fan and I don't think I need to keep charging this so we're going to shut that solenoid down as well. Um, don't worry about these wires. That's not okay.
Those aren't going to stay. Don't worry about that I Promise. All right, let's go ahead and close it up. Everything's shut down in there.
We're a shutdown in here. Key off the fuel filter modification is complete. Today is a success. I'm going to go ahead and enclose this video out right now.
I Think let me know what you think about that fuel filter mod. Let me know what you think about these do alternators. Let me know what you think about that little power supply station that I built in the back of my truck. This is something that's a good idea. a bad idea, a waste of money. And yes I do have a gasoline generator. Yes I do. um but I wanted this so I have generator and I have this.
My theory is generators for the daytime. this can be for at night time and running the engine is that's just a bonus. So anyway guys I'm gonna go ahead close this one out like I said. See you guys later.
like thank you guys for watching this video as always. hope you enjoyed this video again. Let me know what you think about in the comments down below. Don't forget to tap that like button while you're down there and most importantly, have yourselves a fantastic day.
See you guys later in the video and today into Silverado end of power plant and a fuel filter into transmission.
