In this video I have a look at a customers GMC Envoy that had an issue with the door glass in the rear door. Customer states he was driving and the door glass just fell to the bottom of the door. You could hear some crunching goin on in the door when you pushed on the switch and it didn't sound to good. Let's tear it apart and get this regulator swapped out.

Well, five. GMC Folks, it's the Envoy. It's not the Ex, it's the short one or the XL and the guy's back window went all the way down and out will come up. Uh, key on engine off.
You can switch and you hear a lot of creaking and crunching and grinding in there. So I assume the regulator is broke, but let's see about getting one of the we're getting one of the door panels off. Let's see about getting this door panel off and having a look. I Don't recall ever having done one of these on an Envoy We'll be using our wear tool kit.
It's the tool kit with the clip for the mechanic. With the on-the-go lifestyle, we're gonna pop out a little door hole here. There should be a screw. There's always a screw in your door Pole And this car's got two screws.
so you take that little fella out and then they're probably ate that man. But we're gonna check and see they're not. They're seven like I initially thought, but set eight. Oh yeah.
First try here comes the rain. Never tell if it's cloudy out or if it's smoke from Canada It's been really really Smoky here the past couple days. Take this screw out and we'll take this screw out. Now according to service data, it's time to remove the window switch also, but it showed the switch like down here so I'm not 100 certain on that.
Let's give it a little pry. see what she feels like I Don't know I didn't really care for that. That's interesting. So this is just the trim piece.
It's got the four little latches that go over switch, but um, the switch has a metal retaining tab there and there's also one on the front. I Don't know if it's quite necessary to pull this. to be honest with, you, probably could just have unhooked it with the panel off. so I'll click this back.
Unfortunately for us, it did not break. so that's what it looks like. and those are the tabs that hold it in those metal tabs there. So just FYI then that's it.
That's all we had to do. Let me get a kneeling pad. You guys are probably in the best position for this, so we need to take them. Just pop the clips out of the door.
Sometimes you get lucky and just grab it, give it a little yank, but these are pretty snug. Let's even get in here without gouging it up. Too bad there's one. Usually you get a couple started, then you're you're home free.
They're gonna be pretty snug, the one right there is pretty snug, and then we should be able to lift it straight up, straight up, and off. and that's it. I'm not sure what you guys can see from up there, but one two, three four, five, six, seven eight. It looks like this is an oddballer that one there.
so we'll set this one over here in my ex. Chevy And then we'll pull off the uh, the skin. All right. Just pull slow on these things.
When you're taking them off, it's like a butyl rubber that they use on. I Don't know what it is, but if you pull slow, it'll it'll come off there. So we'll set that. Sticky Side Up and then I'll see if we can get a hold of this Fella's window here. Nope, Yeah, the regulator come unglued. So I've done many a fair share of General Motors regulators. Whenever in an Envoy in the back door looks like if we can pick it up, that's there. There we go.
All right, Let me move you guys, because I'm gonna show you how this clamps to the glass. We'll get it unclamped and then we'll take the regulator out. But I probably should go in the office and see if the customer wants to fix it first. I'm sure he probably will and we'll be right back.
So I've got these wedges here. We're gonna wedge the window once we get a release from the regulator. All right. So the glass should be free now.
All right. I'm just gonna pick that up. and I'm gonna take one of these wedges right here and just in the top of the window belting here. we've got to stick them in there.
You can also just take a piece of tape up over the top of the door on both hands of the glass. You know to kind of clamp it over there. You feel inclined to do so. Let's see, won't plug the motor, everybody.
just have to go take a bathroom break. It's pretty loud coming down pretty hard out there. and where's that one? bolt? That bolt somewhere? All right Am I Right where you pull down there little fella. Let me give a feel down in here.
That's gotta be both. Now let me get a light. so I can see what the heck down here. Oh, this is all plastic.
Oh, this is part of this is part of that. Okay, I didn't notice that. That's my bad. That's not a bad little son.
Let's take the speaker out, the bolts right here. See, we ended in just drill a hole in that sucker, right? Foreign. ER Oh God right here. I Don't know if that comes with the regulator or not.
So we're gonna leave that. Let's find the secret combo. The magnet will hold itself there. That's the secret combo.
There's our broken regulator. Let me go get her a new one. Got this baby some? Napper Just lift this around all the way down in there. It should have a couple of little hooks hanging on it one there so it's got a little hook there.
A little hook right there. It is aftermarket, so you might have to do a little tweaking to get things lined up here. That's all right. I'm good.
see if this guide lined up. Yes Ma'am Two out of three ain't bad so far. There's a whisper off. if they don't fit, you might have to force it.
Come on, this guy. put tweak over a little bit here. There you go. just need a little persuasion.
This is just a little 12 volt stuff. Don't get too excited. Okay, they have Sun's Up Oh here it is. Almost made me say a naughty word.
We're gonna pull out our wedgies. Keep your hand right here this window. Falls Let's give a little help on the way down. All these ours.
It's one of those. That's it. That's all they are. Um, I don't think we can get to them with the window all the way up. As you can see, you can have the window all kind of cattywampus in here. Okay, we're just going to kind of go off the old marks and this might have it typically. I'll just kind of leave these a little bit loose. We're going to run the window up so kind of find their.
Center We'll run the window down, then we'll snug them up. You know what I mean. Get that tag back in there. Got a little alignment tab on the back of it.
There's a little plastic donger there. you gotta line up. Feels like there's another one. There is two of them.
There it is. They both lined up real nice. Foreign? Yes sir. Let's uh, turn the key on, plug it up.
actually you can see the one. Bolt Oh, look at that. Good engineering. General Motors We're gonna stick our little socket right through there and the other one right through there.
I'll let her down a little bit now. we're gonna let her back up. That's right where she wants to be. Now we're gonna snug those up.
That's a really good job. It's an unlike GM to do something that makes sense all right there that makes sense. Use your head of these a little bit. Okay, you're doing that to a piece of glass I've never broken, but I could imagine.
there's probably a torque spec so be sure to lift that up. We came, we saw, we kicked it, we did it. Now it's just a matter of putting, uh, a little sticky back on here. All right wires back to there I Think that's probably where they went if I had to guess.
Hopefully we didn't forget anything if we did. I'm sure we will see it in the comments section. I think we did it all went all the way. Got this stuff here.
This goes way up there, way up there. there's that one goes way up there. This stuff usually has plenty enough stick in it to go back on and off multiple times. The Chevy trucks man I can't tell you how many window regulators I've done in those I probably could because I could go look it up, but it's a lot there.
it is by the trail that you guys couldn't see much of that. but up here, under the handle, you have to kind of pull this foam back. There's insulation to get the Water Shield up in there I Didn't realize I was doing such a bad job with the videography foreign doing the filming. So we're gonna stick our wire up here.
Hang this back up towards the top. It's going to go in this groove right here. It's got it done just in time for the rain to quit. Am I right? Is that what we're doing and then you're going to feel the little pegs line up.
I can see it well. those ones click. The top one here does not want to click I can feel it. we're in the groove man.
foreign in that top. Groove It's kind of gummy. forward is up. Click that back in.
What was that one? Where is that one? All right? it's Norman's we better not roll it up and down too many times we want customer to have a few chances. actually. in their defense, their window regulators do seem to last a little while, probably as long as the OEM ish. But I don't know. our trucks go to the scrap metal so fast. it's hard to say maybe other people have had different experiences. That's it folks. that's a window regulator and you.
Chevy Envoy GMC Envoy 9xl plain old Plano Thank you Foreign regulator on the Envoy. Pretty easy and uh you wanna you wanna? Pro tip on how to sew a window regulator without any Heming and Han make sure it's raining. No I'm just kidding. Actually, it's probably a good tip, but uh, you can't control the weather, but what you can do is control what you're going to say in that common section.
Go to 100 questions, comments, concerns. Well it's on the NC the Facebook not on Tick Tock We don't like that guy and just my viewers. If I can do it, you can do it. So thanks for watching.
Very helpful thank you
I prefer to blindly drill holesโฆlike sprayin and prayin!
You should have gave it a rip , the rain would have cleaned it up a bit! haha
What do you mean you can't control the weather? Joe Biden and the democrats say. You can control the weathey, also say it's out of control because of President Trump. Well, we all know that's b*****
Yesterday I replaced the front passenger side window regulator in my son's GF's '08 Dodge Avenger. If they ever need it replaced again it's going to cost them more because they'll be taking to a shop! And I did roll the window partway down when I was done to clean the very top of the window!
Just a recommendation, I have the 2003 trailblazer…before you put those regulators in….grease the absolute dog snot every area those plastic sliders hit on the metal track goung up and down ..the manufacturer doesn't put enough on ..and you'll find out in about a year , you may be doing it again…like I did ๐คฆ๐ปโโ๏ธ…now I'm 5 years on replaced regulators after the grease job.
What failed in the old one?
It's like fighting an octopus.
Ugh! I think I'd rather have a root canal than deal with window regulators. I've replaced a few and none of them were at the top of the easy list.
Do you always replace the motor as well? Had 06 Nissan premier had to replace both front and it came with either replace the wires for get that option, the regulator without the motor and with the motor. My motors were good so just got the regulator bits
Jealous of that rain, could you send us some to South Texas?
One of the easiest window regulators installs ive ever seen wish they were all that simple lol , love your vids keep em coming
GM is good for 7mm head screws
Why did you not lubricate the rails that the window slides upon?
Chevy and Dodge keeps Eric busy, and puts a lot of food on the table.
๐
GM and their wonderfully crappy window regulators
I bet the lawnmower man across the street was just staring out his window and fuming because he knew Eric was filing a video and he couldnโt go out and mow in the rain. Red-faced and swearing, I bet.
Chevy hater ๐๐ก
Donโt roll it up too many times we went the customer to have a few chances with it ๐๐๐
you forgot the wire retainer
man it was pissin down.
Ever since Pot has been legalized up here in Canada where I live there has been a lot more smoke. Nice, very nice
God I would kill for some rain right now.
Good thing about the rain it cleared out the smoke for a little while.
You can't control the weather.. Pfizurrr tornader says hold my beer..
Don't worry about the camera angle. All of Hollywood is on strike so you're still the best cameraman out there. Unenhance..
Sounds like itโs raining good
wow – good job. I had to replace the one in my Expedition 3 times until i purchased a reputable unit – it was a bear to get out. I did get pretty good at it the last time.
Most excellent
How tall are the ceilings in your garage at the car lifts? I have 9 ft ceilings and considering a car lift.
Eric OโโฆGreat show! You missed one little cable tree, top right. Recall! LOL And the Envoy leaves with one Clean Window!
Eric, learn so much from you !!
Wow — that was the most painless window-regulator replacement I've ever seen. You should try doing them in a 1968 Ford Galaxie convertible. LOL! The rear ones, especially, are INSANELY difficult. You literally have to remove the entire back seat to get to them. And then the hole they fit through is about a third the size it needs to be. It can only fit through that hole when it's rolled completely down. Which is, of course, impossible if the crank-gear has stripped and you can't crank it down anymore. I literally had to cut one of mine into pieces with a Dremel tool in order to remove it. Many, many, MANY hours of work. Engineers don't do everything right, for sure, but there are definitely some things they do better today than they did back in the '60s/'70s/'80s.
Glad to see you having a good day!
The guy on TikTok did a better job doing the window regulator… ๐คฃ๐คฃ๐คฃ๐คฃ
Awesome
I like seeing my favorite upholstery cleaner. It great on windows also. The FlatRate Master turned me on to that years ago and now I use nothing else.
Tx being in a drought and over 100 for weeks on end, the sound of that heavy rain was therapeutic.
Seems Like GMโs Higher End Models have just as many Issues as the Lower End Models. ๐คช I have a GMC Sierra but the Older Models are Solid and Reliable. ๐ฌ๐
That window motor sure makes a lot of noise. Just as noisy as your impact
I saw enough to know I'd bring mine to South Main Auto! Great video, thanks!
Up here in Canada (Ontario), we are working hard to stop the fires. We have help from multiple countries because they are so bad. Sorry about the smoke to our American friends!
Hi Eric O.! How's it going? Thank you for your repair videos. Have a good day now.
I was in line at car wash, went to remove tow hitch and placed it in back seat, shut door and window fell down. Cars behind me had to back up.. big fiasco. ๐
Fantastic job! Well done ๐๐
Try heating up a putty knife with a torch.
It cuts through that butal glue like butter and leaves stragglers..
Always make sure up is up. I had to do all four doors on a Pontiac once, and one of them was wired in reverse. Luckily, I caught it quickly and simply re-pinned the + and -.
You are a very skilled mechanic and living locally I would always want to use you for any of my auto repairs needs
And Eric now enters the ASMR category with "sounds from a gentle rain while fixing a car"
Some nice rainstorm ASMR in this episode, very relaxing. I vote that all future episodes are filmed with background foley mics capturing high-fidelity sounds of the great outdoors.
That has got to be the easiest window regulator replacement I have ever seen! GM provided heaps of room to remove the old & install the new one. The frightening thing was the load clicks as you removed the door card, I was certain a few clips broke! I can't believe I am saying this, but Good One GM!!
The wera tool kit is worth it's weight in gold ๐
Great video Eric. I always enjoy them and seeing Mrs O and Luna as well…lol
I respectfully disagree with your โwe canโt control the weatherโ statement. Our government tells us every day that we can and we must control our weather through change and increased taxes. Lol
Why have I never encountered so much access to the inside of the door panel in my entire life. I've never taken out a window regulator that easily
I like how you removed your prints and DNA at the end. Gotta stay a step ahead of'em…
Hi Eric,
Would it not be wise to grease the metal window regulator sliders and cables, or would that just attract dirt and add resistance to the mechanism?
I was mechanic for 50 years. Glad to see someone doing proper work these days.
As a retired mechanic these videos are joy to watch.
That little kit u used to take apart the door. Who makes it wiha ?
I would have tried to repair the old regulator…
The regulator shuffle. Engineers must have thought that those things would never break.
he's lucky you got it in when you did and not be stuck with an open window in that rain! that happened to me when my window regulator broke, it was right before a rain storm. i had to tape a garbage bag over the opening to try to keep it dry since i didn't have a garage
South Main ASMR Repair…the rain in the background and the smooth repair was very soothing. Thanks Eric, you are a real stress reliever on this one.
Thank goodness they got rid of the pop-rivets holding those regulators on. To make sure the window works properly you should also run it from the drivers control button.
I miss rain…..
– The South
Video approved, click.
And no rust hit the floor in this video! Thx as always .
A GM with window problems? Socked! Shocked I tell ya!
Thanks Eric every time I watch you it reinforces the need for patience and to think about what you are doing.Regards to Mrs O.
I thought for sure it was a Jeep with tyht window dropped inside/broken cables, but I guess most all of them use the same junk now days..
that has got to be the cheapest looking door
That just be the first time I've seen the engineers actually line things up so that the tool fits to allow you to properly complete the job, my guess is that those holes were meant to collect dropped fasteners from some other job on the door and just randomly happened to line up with the bolts. That or some engineer at GM paid his way through college working as a mechanic and designed the one part he was responsible for to be actually ready to work on =)
Watching this at midnight in Texas, that rain sounds relaxing as hell and I must put me to sleep…
Eric, tomorrow's a big day for me. My Autel scanner arrives! After 10 years of doing my own repairs, thanks to you and a couple others, I'm upping my game. I'm now the neighbor's mechanic, too.
Also, if you don't have wedges available folded up cardboard works pretty well too. Done that a time or 2.
Sorry had to give you a thumbs down 'cause the Mrs was not in the video otherwise it would have been a ๐
Hey what's the matter with you. Your supposed to leave greasy finger prints all over the window and card so the customer can tell you actually put your hands on his car. lol
So what about that Hummer? lol
Is it raining?
..lol
What? It rains there? I thought it was snow or sunshine……… ๐
I'm about to tackle the old GM AFM lifter issue, sure would be nice if there was an Eric O video on it, but you always put a bullet in those and just make a short video because they are all see through trucks by the time they come to you, mine is not so worth pulling the heads and changing lifters.
No need to lube the slider track(s)?
Another good video, but I did not see you put the little xmax tree clip on the wiring harness back in the little hole. But I won't tell if you don't. lol
Got it from NAPA, not a sponsor. ๐
I just get the genuine parts for the motor snd regulator. My 05 gmc had a driver back one go bad back in 2021. Figured if it lasted that long the new one would probably last the same. I dont live in the crust belt so im not worried about it ending up a rust pile anytime soon
Yes, you missed the wiring loom little white plastic christmas tree on the regulator bracket near the motor.
If you could just go ahead and film all of your videos with the rain sound in the background, thatโd be greeeeat.
Gonna have to open it up again and put that wiring harness retainer clip pin in.
I told a mechanic friend about the Subaru rear bearing replacement and he watched the video. Thanks to you from him.
The one and only time I replaced a regulator it was held in place by rivets. Now that shows a lot of confidence that it will never need to be replaced
Only one thing you forgot? But itโs nothing really just challenging myself to see if I can ever spot anything for fun really. You forgot to snap the wire harness to the new regulator. All these years and finally seen one thing. Lol. Your still one of the best to ever do it.
Have you worked on 2008 acura mdx regarding emissions?
Horrible design! Ive had to replace 3 regulators in my buick lesabre
Working inside doors can be bloody!!
If you're doing this job at home, that 18 year-old speaker is probably shot too. I'm pretty sure they're just paper cones. So most any cheap speaker from Amazon or Walmart will be an upgrade.
Did you tighten the glass holding bolts?
Had my GMC pick up for 23 years and replaced the window regulator on the drivers door 3 times and the glass once, passenger side never been touched.
Smoke from Canada lol weed?
