Customer Customer States Mechanic Fails Engine Transmission Gas Diesel off road race 4x4 street car daily driver scam dealership dealer technician how to

Uh oh, it's broken. Got one coming in on the hook. It's not looking good. it's a Ford Ranger Yep, got him back buddy.

you're doing good. Ah, we've got a clue. It's been off-road backing out, bagging up uh four Rangers been through some stuff. look at that.

Oh The Wheels On Missing a nut? Yeah, we're gonna have him back it in. right on the lift over there. Set her down, then we can walk away good. Excel Yeah, Bring him back some more.

Keep coming back. Ooh Fender took a hit. All right man. Bring it back some more.

keep coming. Keep coming. keep coming. keep it coming.

Straight back say we're good right there. we're good. All right. We got the rat kind of set up under here.

We're gonna let the tow truck down now. it's gonna drop it. Yeah, we're good. Come on down see how it's gonna settle? We're on the lift, we're on the lift.

Yep, let's check that other side and that's right. We got ourselves like, uh, looks like a 99 Ford Ranger XLT Customer States The wheel fell off while driving and from the looks of things down in there, yeah, it did. There's like, well, I didn't actually fall like all the way off, but it fell off enough where the front end of the car fell down and the tires smashed in the fender and caused some body damage. not to mention, uh, whatever kind of damage is, uh, going on down below in the wheel.

Well here. So let's go ahead and get this tire off of the whatever's left inside and uh, bear witness to the destruction and damage that uh, that is contained within. But first. I Guess we better get our facts right here.

singing: open the actuator is actuating but the door is not unlocking. You have to do this in manual mode. There we go. We're in.

Let's see, we've got ourselves. Yepper it's a 1999. Ford Ranger It's a crew cab. XLT and it's got looks like 107 742 miles on the odometer that's really dark we can't see.

We're not going to start the engine, we're just going to go ahead and get straight to the suspension. uh, inspection and see what. uh, what we've got to work with here. So stay tuned because this is going to be a really, really good video opening.

Z Hood Here's our brake rotor. There was our brake. Rudder All right, let's get this. uh, this wheel off of this thing and uh, see what happened in here? I'm thinking that the bearing exploded something like that.

Why can't I get a hold of these nuts. Get on there. Because my gun is so massive. That's the problem.

It's a big old gun. Go drop one. No worries. Oh, it's still falling apart.

Come here. Oh my. God What have you done? All right, let's see what's going on here. So we've got.

here's our brake rotor. There was a great Rudder Okay, now that's the wheel. Hub looks like pieces of a bearing. Um, it's not okay.

I Got locking hugs. junk. There's the basket for some wheel bearings. Uh, there used to be Why? hang on.

This doesn't make any sense. Oh, it pulled the pulled the threads right out of the caliper bracket. Look at that. that used to be the caliper bracket.
Okay, how did that come off? Like it doesn't make any sense? That is not come off there unless it was already loose. Uh, the backing plate is junk. and I'm betting that this CV axle is also junk. Yeah, yeah, you can see right here.

The splines on it are all torn up from running into metal. Wash that off a little bit. Get rid of some of the uh, your grease there. Oh, that's empty, not working.

I'm gonna try this again with a fresher or a can hear all that grease. This: if these splines are okay, we can save this axle. but they're they're not. Yeah, that's junk ruined.

It's been ruined. Okay, so what other cars do we have? Let's see. Yeah, what gets me is is this caliper. I Gotta wonder how that thing came loose because that that's not normal.

So we're on the hook so far for looks like a CV axle a hub bearing assembly. Uh, pretty sure the Locker on the end of this is okay. So I'll be able to reuse that. That's junk.

Um, threads on the end of that. What is this? It's weird. Okay, no matter. and I don't know if these brakes are any good.

The rotor's junk. It's been shoot up. It's not horrible, but not really service worthy either. Okay, okay, let's try to let me try to get this uh caliper off of here.

Um, okay. that top one's tight, but not all the way. I Need a tool? I'm not gonna be able to do that by hand, that's for sure. Let's turn this guy a little bit.

Maybe I Can you know I'll get behind it with a impact here. Get the little one out. Nope. Not gonna fit there and turn it out with the key now.

Can I fit in there? No. Maybe. Yeah. Okay, that's thread's been pulled on that thing too.

All right, I guess I'm gonna have to force it out and figure out where I'm gonna find replacement bolts. That's going to be fun binding up. pretty bad that Bolt's bent. Look at the caliper moving around.

See that? Weird. So we're gonna need a bracket, bolts, axle bearing. this is going to come out or I have to torch it off. What is this once? I Get this caliper off.

We'll see if that, uh, if that. Knuckles Any good or not, this knuckle might have been damaged. Beyond Reusability I Hope not because it's a 20-something year old truck. There we go.

Yeah, these threads are junk. broken thread. threads are pulled right out of the bracket. That's not any good.

Okay, that's not really reusable. Check that out. Look at that thing bent sideways, stretched. There's a crack in it.

Okay, Oh, can't use that again. That's garbage. All right. put that over there for now.

All right, let's see if I can't get these bolts out of this. Uh, this wheel hub right here I Think they're kind of toy. Yeah, they are. Hang on.

Breaker Bar or uh Jack Handle folks, those are tight. Who put these on? Troy Did you do this? Troy knows this guy. Did you put these bolts on? These things are stupid tight. I had to use a breaker bar thing to get them off.
Look at that. That's why you did I Know you did it. You crop. That's why the wheel fell off.

You did it. Oh I'm just kidding. I'm kidding. he's not.

He's not like that. Okay, let's see if I can't get this thing out of the way. There's another bolt down there I Can't really get to. Oh, the Carnage is horrible on this thing.

so bad. Well, there's one bolt loose here. Let's just spin that one out since it's new here. Give it back.

All right. there's one here. I Got an idea. The problem is: there's just too much.

There's just too much going on here. I'm gonna pull this tie rod off that way. this knuckle can move back and forth and then I can manipulate it some and try to get the rest of those bolts out for this hub bearing. here.

It's a nice way to do this. Okay, so it's got a castle nut down there and looks like a, uh, just a powder pin. Let's get that pin removed. Mirror pin.

That guy over, bend it over some more. Extraction complete. Okay, what do we got? Is that a 19 or a 20 something? It's like a 21 22. All right, 22.

Coming in on the sneakage? There we go. The hammer time here. We need to get this, uh, smashed in backing plate out of here. We go through that, stick our puller on this tire out here.

Press that guy out there. we go all right. Tie Rod: Zeus Kinda stick that out of the way all right now. I Think I can get to at least that bolt right there.

No, not really. There's this piece of metal in the way. Pry bar. All right.

let's get in there with some pry bar. I Gotta get this mangled piece of metal out of here. I Can't even get my uh, my tools on that fastener. Maybe I Don't know what's in there.

Come on, you get out of the way All right. Well I can move it some I know it's it's like hammer time I Will hammer onto the pry bar if you get a socket on that fastener. it's not working. Brutal.

What did I get myself into? a mistake in judgments? Not okay. kinda. Did I get it. Did I get it enough? Maybe possibly probably sure.

There we go good. I've got a socket on it. Now we're getting somewhere. You can't get that thing to come loose.

Unclick action Tight. Okay, let's speed this up with the electron ratchet here. Give me back my tools. that's two of them.

Remove good. All right. let's go around to the other side over there and try to get. uh, that last.

uh, third one out of that hole. Get that third one out. Yeah, it's that one right there there. Oh, that thing's stiff too.

Okay, like even with the steering disconnected I can barely turn this brawl Spike You know, a matcher. Now how about that? Uh, about that bowl? If I get behind it I can fry that piece of metal away. pry Hammer to the rescue. That in there used to just be like a dust shield I Think ow.
hit myself with a hammer. All right socket. Let's uh. Force this thing on No Mercy Ratchet time.

Get on there, please. There we go. One click time. Let's do it.

There we go, buddy. That was tight bearings coming out. What do we have here? There's part of it. There's some more of it at the inner bearing.

Yeah, that's junk. Okay, now we're using that. And oh, this thing's still wedged in here. All nasty like.

All right. Well, it's starting to come apart. Can't get that nut out though. The piece of metals in the way still.

I Think I'm going to need to. uh, probably have to cut some of this stuff out to get it come apart. I Think All right. let's disconnect this uh wheel speed sensor from the bearing housing here.

One one little bolt and then the sensor element should just come right out. Should? come on. Seriously you? you pretty sure the new bearing is going to come with it, but just in case. can't get it out.

Oh seriously. screwdriver? We'll pry it off. Fry driver for the wind. It's getting that little crack there.

Work it out there. we go. Oh man. there's like metal chunks stuck to the sensory.

That sensor's junk. Yeah, it's damaged. Okay, it goes full of metal, metal and grease. I Guess I'll pull off the backing plate next.

bolts on from this side. Uh, hammer again. there's one. There's another one behind here.

I Think yeah. I Need to dig that guy out too. So believe it or not, all this damage was caused it at 25 miles per hour? fast. Could you imagine what would happen at 75 highway speed? 55.

Not okay. There's a fold in the middle I Can't get the socket on that last. Bolt It's a pry bar hammer that big bending the metal. We got out of here.

Craft metal all right. So I've decided that this entire knuckle is going to have to be removed. So we need to pull the lower ball joint bolt out and the upper control arm up here. So let's get this full ending and nut off the upper.

There we go. and I think I can just tap that out with a hammer. Let's put the nut on it to protect the threads. It's got a through bolt in it.

Sure is okay. Good. All right. this is not a punch, but it's right in front of me so it'll work and drive that bolt out the rest of the way.

Okay, so the upper should be free. There it goes. Okay, taking a look in our Hub we've got the big uh lock nut in there. that thing's threaded and I believe it screws into the back of the like the bearing.

Somehow somewhere try to get this thing out. Okay, I meant to bring it this way, but I guess if it wants to go that way, that works for me too now. I just need to get this uh, lower ball joint bolt off. we can tap that loose and then the whole knuckle assembly is going to come down and we can pull it out and back and away from that CV axle.
at which point we can get the CV axle to come out. So let's uncot or pin this. Ah, there we go. Grab all that PIN pry you out there we go and I think that's a 27.

There we go. Sure is 27 on the thick of juice. Okay, that's kind of free. We're gonna need that puller again.

Let's get this guy on it's going to press on the ball joint and pull on the Uh on the knuckle. Fuller impacts coming in. Need a fresh battery for that when it was running low? All right. come on.

ball joint. got it. This thing gonna come off? Okay, well that's free from the ball joint. So what's hanging me up here? This whole assembly is still pretty stuck.

Oh, there we go. Moved a little bit. Okay, all right. there's a bracket with some hoses on it.

back here. let's take that off. These are the vacuum hoses for the four-wheel drive. Locker and I think the knuckle.

Yeah, it's out of there. Come on, you don't let go. Got it? Wow. The Carnage Nasty.

Okay yeah, this axle is garbage and if it's chewed up. Okay, so what I think happened here is that one of the wheel bearings. It appears to be the outer bearing on the Hub That bearing started to fail. The rollers in it either broke apart or fell out or both and this Hub was just kind of flopping around.

Eventually enough of those little rollers fell out of it where the things started to run sideways. It put crazy pressure on the brake caliper. Oh look at that. It actually bent that caliper bracket.

See that like I Don't know if you can see it from the on the camera I Could see it with my eye though. This caliper bracket is bent. so I put crazy side load pressure on the caliper bracket, hold the threads out of the bracket, bent the bolts, both of them were bent and then proceeded to have the wheel almost fall all the way off in the in, in which instance, it smashed into the fender and bent the fender in. So yeah, this thing, uh, this could have been really bad had this happened at a highway speed.

Fortunately, it happened at low speed and uh, nobody was injured or harmed with the exception of the uh, the pride in maybe the fender and the truck. But this is a nice classic good old truck and we're going to do whatever we can do to get this thing fixed. So at this point I Need to go on a parts hunt I'm going to be looking for a CV axle I Need all the hardware I Probably need this nut thing right here as well. Looks like this is the locker nut that secures onto the back side of the bearing assembly.

See that? Yeah, that's threaded and this is threaded. So I need the bearing the hub bearing The Hub the nut I Believe the spindle is okay so this can be reused I Don't think this has been damaged. Exception that little Notch right there and maybe some scratches. We're gonna need a rotor and a wheel speed sensor.
We're gonna do that as well. So I'm going on the parts hunt. That being said, uh, there's nothing more for me to do today on this particular. Ford Ranger So I'm gonna go ahead and close this video out right about now.

I'll do that as always. but thank you guys for watching this wheel falling off of the truck video. Hope you enjoyed the Carnage Hope you're looking forward to the next video on this particular truck. Until then again, thank you guys for watching.

Let me know what you thought about this video in the comment section down below. Tap that like button while you're down there and most importantly, have yourself a great day. See you guys later into Ford Ranger into wheel falling off in the video in the day in the transmission.

Lol, that's what happens when you put oversized tires on without modification to the vehicle. Anyway my Ranger made lots of noise for a couple of days till I pulled it apart. Guess this owner couldn't hear it with all the tire noises. Too bad she is in good shape. We don't have hardly any Rangers left in NY.

  3. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Matthew McMaster says:

That hub assembly may look ok but the surfaces where the bearings are pressed into could have been tweaked. If I was the owner I would ask to have that replaced as well. For its age and mileage that truck looks way too nice to risk it.

    Wow, what a mess!

  5. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars SGTJDerek says:

For whatever reason my last Ranger didn't use cotter pins. Just a cheap sheet metal "lock" nut. Destroyed barrings like you wouldn't believe.

Judging from the rust stains coming from the radiator, this truck probably gets very little routine maintenance.

  9. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Randy Crager says:

THE EXACT SAME THING HAPPENED TO MY SON IN LAW. Funny thing was he took out a Sharp Curve sign and almost rolled it but the damage was so great he got a better pick up out it. He bounced it off the bank so hard he folded the cab roof up about 12". He misses the other truck but got a great deal on a newer one with the same diesel motor,

Had a wheel bearing fail on me on a long drive. Started howling 200 miles from my destination. I chose to risk it and made it. By the time i got there the wheel was turned sideways to go straight. Parked it because i was busy for a month and decided to limp it to a shop that was 2 miles away. Half a mile in and there was smoke and flames coming from my wheel well. Had to put it out with a fire extinguisher at a kia dealership. (They charged me for using their extinguisher $45) once the flames were out i limped it to a crappy tire shop a block away. The cv axle boot was torn, wheel was cocked at a 45 degree angle, caliper was chewing into the rotor. Long story short, fix your wheel bearings because when they go they go to the moon.

107k? That thing is low mileage for a ‘99. I got an ‘11 with 190k on it, 4.0 still has intact timing chain guides. That 3.0 is gutless but it keeps on going. Looks just like my front end except mines 2wd, different knuckle maybe and brake rotor/caliper but that’s about it. Those are some ball joints that are in good shape being that tight… Geez just take the pinch bolt out and pop the upper ball joint out of the top of the steering knuckle and that axle would be out. Use a pry bar to push the lower control arm down if you need to. Disconnect the shock bolts, what’s hanging you up? Vacuum hoses and wheel speed sensors or brake lines. Caliper bracket threads on the knuckle are gone

  16. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars David Manly says:

More big tires that overload the bearings and suspension – causing failures. Thats pass laws that get this junk off of public roads. Off road is fine, not on public roads. Enough people have been killed or hurt by these illegally modified vehicles. No one has the right to endanger others on purpose.

  59. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Saskatchewan Moose says:

  60. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Egregious Blunder says:

  65. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Craig Quann says:

Me thinks that was an off road g-out. bearing failed on impact when the suspension bottomed out

  66. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars thomas m. tordel jr. says:

"i dunno, i wuz jus drivin' and it went BOOM!"

  67. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Silent Ferret says:

I am not sure but that lower end of the knuckle looked a bit bent but could be manufactured bent but at least you should have one side that is good to compare bends. Since that bearing killed itself I would check with the owner and see if they want the other side inspected.

  68. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars NightForce 1 says:

I can imagine the owners face when he watches this video! Priceless!!

  69. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Gabtastic says:

I did my inner and outer wheel bearings on my truck yesterday. I remembered to use a minimum 2 cans of brakes clean. The most important part. Thanks for the videos and the tips and tricks along the way. Good day to you as well.

  70. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Ian Giles says:

I'm not trying to be a grumpy old man commentator but I think the young guy who was driving this was Listening to "I think I can fly" on the radio at the time and later "another one bites the dust"…🤣

  71. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Antonio Claudio Michael says:

Look forward seeing the truck put back on the road and the repairs Good old Ford Ranger @Rainman Ray's Repairs

  74. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Antonio Claudio Michael says:

Will need a new caliper and bracket new cv axle bearing Locking 4×4 hub knuckle dust plate might also need ball joints and tie rod @Rainman Ray's Repairs

  75. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Antonio Claudio Michael says:

Caliper came loose when the well Ripped the Hub out and the rotor was attached to hub @Rainman Ray's Repairs

  76. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Gino Bragoli says:

Looks like it has a major antifreeze/coolant leak as well?

  77. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars MG in Vacafornia says:

I wonder if it was all just a bunch of busy work? It looked like all you had to do was remove the entire chunk and throw it away as an assembly. I would have popped the axle out of the tranny, disconnect the brake line, tie rod end, sensor wires, and then the upper and lower ball joints, and pulled the whole thing at once. It would have made it a lot quicker getting the axle core out. I mean if every part is screwed anyway, why take all the pieces apart just to throw them all in the garbage?

  78. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars andrew E says:

another great video Ray. In Australia we love our Ford Rangers

  83. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Chris Burrell says:

The lower control arm looked crack by the ball joint?

  84. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Hudson says:

Man this dude must like changing wheel bearings I had a ranger on 35's it ate a set of front wheel bearings every 1000 miles

  85. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Bob Basshead says:

YUP! Troy Caster tightened those hub bolts!

  86. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Rodney Pharaoh says:

That bearing would have been making a lot of noise long before this happened. The owner needs to listen to his vehicle and take note of what it is telling him. This could have been a complete disaster if it had been going faster and could have taken out other motorists

  87. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars NutClappinCapn says:

    Pretty sure thats totaled

  88. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars bassfan41 says:

It'll be alright, just turn the radio up lol

  89. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars ThatGamingSoup says:

I only have one question. How big was that pothole, cuz DAMN!

  90. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Don W says:

I hope the right side gets torn down for inspection…since it is missing a wheel stud from what I saw, it needs a bit of TLC as well. As others have said, the offset huge wheel assy puts alot more weight on the outer bearing..thus the mess on the left. The guy got crazy lucky it happened at low speed. I dread to think of what could have been at highway speed.
He should get a lotto ticket for sure.

  91. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Frank Werhanowicz says:

Let’s put some oversized tires and wheels on our light weight pickup and go jumping and have fun off road…

  93. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars DeSoto Sky says:

Note to Troy, oversize tires cause oversize problems.

  94. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Chris EJ says:

25 mph, from 2 feet in the air when they came off a jump?!? 😂
