Customer Customer States Mechanic Fails Engine Transmission Gas Diesel off road race 4x4 street car daily driver scam dealership dealer technician how to

Hello there everybody! Good day to you! Welcome back! Glad you guys are here! I As always and I'm super glad to be here. We're gonna fetch one of the project Jeeps out of the hole over here and uh and uh, check out some Carnage that I believe is contained within. uh, not this one. it's gonna be that one.

but I have to move this one. Okay, so this is one of the project Jeeps it's 6921 miles on the odometer. This is the one that didn't have reverse. I think this was the one.

it didn't have reverse and now it does have reverse but it's also got a massive transmission tail shaft fluid leak. We're not working on this one right now. we're working on the green one over there. the green one.

Over Yonder uh that one had a transmission problem I forgot what it was uh I think I think that one was like slamming into uh into first gear or something like that. Anyway, that one last time we headed into the shop we pulled the transmission pan down, found that the fluid was absolutely destroyed, walked out and we also found then after I test drove it it did not have first gear. uh while we were doing all that I took note of the uh, the condition of the rear axle and uh, it has uh, some excessive wear or Carnage inside I think that was the issue uh with the axle on this one. So so uh in order to remedy the transmission, I ended up ordering some solenoids for it.

So I'm going to pull the pan off of this one other one other time. not right now because I don't have the parts. but I did want to go ahead and get this. uh, get the rear axle inspected to see if this thing's even safe to drive if I can get the thing to shift right at 305 449.6 miles on this odometer.

So we have like we have over a half a million miles of Jeep here. Stay Together Parking brake. Yeah, this one's only got like third gear or second gear. something like that.

So I'm trying to piece these things together I have infinite project Jeeps millions of miles of Jeep I'm just gonna swing this into the front stall right here the small one because that stall over there has another Jeep hanging out on it. that's the one with the loose steering gear. uh, waiting on parts on that one. so we're on hold and I'm kind of done for the day.

So I'm still uh, like I said earlier, I'm trying to Tinker uh, some of Troy's Jeeps together. so let's get this thing up on the rack set up. we'll lift it up and we're going to pull that diff cover off. Yeah no no, this is the one with no reverse.

Okay I don't even know powering down I think if I can take both of the Jeeps and like meld them together, perhaps we can create one functional. Jeep I Think that that might be the plan at the end of this all. I I Really don't know I actually have no plan for these Jeeps because they they're almost on I Don't know. I might just like buy Troy a new Jeep and then not have to worry about about these Jeeps but he likes these Jeeps So it is what it is.

It's a Jeep people thing Nobody, especially me understands. All right. So let's raise this up some. We'll set the rack on it, then raise it up some more and we're gonna move around to this rear axle and see what kind of absolute destruction is contained within.
Yeah, that looks good right there. How's that side you doing? Okay, All right. Stay win. I'll raise it up.

Not yet, Not yet. not again. Okay. Moving up.

All right. let's recheck that one's good. That one's good. Moving around to the other side, how's this one doing? That one's okay.

That one's good over there. All right, we're good. Let's get this thing up in the air. We'll pull the dip cover off and uh, just see how gnarly it is inside all the way up.

Black subscribe button. Just a reminder to remind you and consider subscribing to the channel in case you like this kind of content. It's an algorithm thing, all right. Rolly chair in action.

We've got the drain pan in action here. Let's get this all this business set up. Pull that cover off and check out the damage inside. Now the reason I believe there's excessive wear or damage is the mesh inside of those spider gears inside of that differential case should be fairly tight.

But watch this. if we move the wheel. that one has a lot of slack in it. Look at that.

look at all that play in there. There's a lot of play in this thing. Excessive. I Think we can even hear it in there talking around.

We can hear a lot of stuff going on in there. So we've got a series of uh I think those are 13 mil bolts. We're gonna pop those guys off, drain the fluid out, and just check out the the extremely high level of nasty that I'm sure is occurring inside of that cover. Okay, so now I happen to be of the opinion that there's some Total Carnage in here and we might end up being better off just replacing this axle.

I Don't know. Pull these guys out, crack the seal, see what's in there. Need some pry bar? All right, pry action? Let's just get behind this lip on the cover here. Ooh sparkly yeah.

I don't know that's that's pretty nasty. Thank you. Okay, all right, we're gonna move on in here for the close-up. Now on the left side I'm I'm moving the left side axle.

see that over there for the wheel rather. And we're trying to get a good feel for the cause of the Carnage in motion that's happening inside of this differential. and I Think Well, number One I was mistaken. The gears aren't as worn as I thought they were, but there's still a boatload of play going on inside of this thing.

Like there's a lot of a lot of motion. Look at that. I Can see some motion on the spider gears, so that means these things are worn at the PIN And oh, look over here here. Turn you guys a little bit.

take a look at that bearing right there. Look at. that bearing is annihilated. That thing's junk.

I Wonder about the left side bearing. How's this one doing? Can we see? Yeah, it's also. it's also got some play in there. Let's look deeper down inside.
I'm going to try to move the drive shaft and we can check and see what kind of play is going on at that pinion gear right there. and uh, reverse. Play Between The pinion gear versus the ring gear. Let's take a look at that.

see if you can't get some action here on that one. So moving the drive shaft? Oh yeah, look at that. That's wild. and there's there's glitter everywhere inside of here.

Metal chunks all over the place. Much play. Oh there's some more. Carnage I found more way back you guys can't see.

There's a big chunk missing out of. uh, out of that pinion gear, right? Come on. Zoom Focus I'll zoom in more. There it is.

August please. There's that big old chunk. Big chunk of metal taken out of one of the gear faces. We need to see all these gears.

Hey Troy Can you climb in there with a ladder and throw this thing in neutral? Yeah! I Want to be able to turn this whole assembly around and look at the other side? Yeah, I mean it's not horrible. These actually look like they've been replaced before these spider gears. So somebody is attempted to uh to fix this up. but we've got a chewed up bearing.

or a chewed up race. Or a chewed up bearing and a chewed up race because it'll collapse under your weight. Yeah, we can see right here. It looks like the uh, the bearings are actually starting to dig in to, uh, the piece of the carrier right here.

See that right in that area? Get some more zoom action in it. begin zooming closer now right around here in that area as those bearings are touching the case. Yeah, that's bad. Yeah.

I Don't think this thing's in in operating condition. Let's uh, let's rotate the drive shaft a little bit. I'm reaching around. spin this around to the other side.

Oh my. God Oh my. God What are you doing? What is this? Look at that. That's the PIN that's the pin that holds in the pin that keeps this from going.

How'd that happen? Did you do that. I'm gonna plead the fifth here. Okay, so all right. so Troy did that? Oh yeah, look at that look right here.

See that that's that's not okay. This is all where. from where this pin has been flopping around, did you put these spider gears in this? I don't know. Okay, yep.

found. uh, found some of the looseness. Let's check the other side real quick. previous.

Zone I'll be mad at you if it's your fault. Yeah, we're gonna. We need to replace all this stuff. It's not okay.

You see that? Yeah, the case is damaged. That's all wallered out. Oh now I can get this out. It's loose enough where it comes apart.

Let's wiggle it some more. Are we stripped? We grab a eight millimeter wrench from the Uh from the wrench drawer. Oh yeah, there's a bunch of metal in here too hanging out. I Want to see if this pins damaged which? I'm sure it is.
Mr President Break off. Tell you the truth, it's not okay. Let's see if it's gonna come out. I don't think it's coming out I think it's like, oh, here we go, pull this thing out.

See what it, uh what it looks like, come out. oh it's not even gonna come out. That's not all right. Is there a hammer nearby? I Got a hammer in or out the pieces that are holding all the pieces together.

Everything's a hammer. Not a chance. Okay, no. I did not I did not Got it.

Oh, that's not even gonna come apart. bad. So bad. I'm glad we've condemned this and you stop driving it.

That's good. Yeah, so we're gonna need to put a carrier in this. At the least it's gonna need some, uh, some side bearings, carrier bearings, and uh, it's gonna be an opinion. The opinion bearing is opinion.

gear is damaged. It probably needs pinion bearings, so I'm sure that those are kind of sloppy it's been swimming around in Sparkle metal glitter for who knows how long. That goes to the same for the outside bearing. So we need to Pro instead to rebuild this entire axle.

That's uh, that's where we're at Troy Be like oh no, I get my axle rebuilt. Oh no, it's terrible. Um yeah, that's scored up pretty bad too. You guys see that right there.

I Think there's a piece of this missing? I Believe this is supposed to be longer than what we're looking at here because this is supposed to run all the way through. like all the way through. and then the other side of this pin sits in a hole that's drilled all the way through on the other side. So this pin's broken off.

so the reason this isn't coming out is because more of the pin is in there. This is going to be fun to disassemble. Oh goody. Oh, you have another one? Do you? I do have a whole nother axle? Is it any good? or is it like this axle? I Don't know.

I've never opened it here. Now we should. Um, and it's an eight in the corner Chrysler Just like this? Yep, Okay, let's get let's put that in. Yeah, we should do that because this one's gone.

Dude, it's This one's. pretty bad. it's over with side bearings are gone, this whole carrier is gone I Mean this stuff's okay. except I'm gonna destroy it taking it apart.

Yeah, if you happen to have another axle, then I Think we should take this entire actual assembly out and put the other axle in. That's what we should do. That's the plan. Yeah, hey Jinx yo Mio Okay, well seeing as how we we're not really sure how this is gonna go.

uh I understand that the other eight eight that Troy happens to have uh is a uh, it's also a 300 000 mile Jeep So it might end up being in the same condition as this, uh, this differential. So what he's gonna do, he's gonna fetch that other unit out of, uh, out of the other. Jeep drag that thing in here and we're gonna take that other one apart and see if that one's any good. and then if that was any good, we're gonna drop this axle out of this Jeep and swap in the new axle into this.
Jeep So that's kind of the plan I Think not really certain, but I do know that I'm kind of going to condemn this one to death. I'm sure it can be rebuilt, but since he's got some parts, maybe we can just go with that. Uh, regardless of whether I can rebuild this or not, it's all going to depend on how much case damage has actually taken place, if any. For example, if those side bearings have spun and the races are just flopping around inside of their housings and those housings are damaged and they're oversized or they're oblong shaped, in which case, putting new bearings in there would just do the same thing and it's not going to fix the problem.

So if the other one's just as junk as this one is, then we might rip this one apart and micrometer all the all the bearing surfaces and see if they can be. Uh, if it can be rebuilt. Other than that, maybe we can get a used one. Maybe we can swap in.

Maybe like a Ford 88 I Mean there are some options because it is. in fact the Jeep and uh Jeep people do Jeep things. so there are other options and there's other roads that we can go down regarding this Jeep axle thing. But as for right now, this truck is dead in the water.

It's out of service. I Do not deem this thing safe to drive and it's not going to drive anywhere except back outside parking lot. So for right now, I'm gonna throw some bolts back in this cover so it doesn't uh, leak out sparkly oil everywhere over the next few days. That's not even the right size.

Wrong with me. wrong size socket. that was the one I tried to use as a punch. There we go.

Let's just throw a couple bolts in this and let it ride for now. No, I'm not gonna I'm not gonna reseal this and I'm not gonna put oil in it. That's a waste of oil and it's a waste to seal it. And since, uh, not in the business of wasting things, we can just let this sit how it is.

for now. I'll add it to the parking lot of perpetually destroyed vehicles Never ends. All right, that's two down or eight down there. we go.

Eight down, two to go numerical. Dyslexia is taking over, taking over my cerebrum. I Don't even know. All right guys.

Well, that's all we have on the follow-up on this floppy rear end Jeep Yeah, look at that. it's that's so bad. it is just so so bad. Incredible.

Anyway guys, yeah, we're all done here. There's nothing more for us to do or see or take apart or put together until Troy decides to dig More junkyard parts out of his junkyard. So uh, up until that time as always like thank you guys for watching this video. Hope you enjoyed this video.

If you did, enjoy this video. please feel free to let me know about that. Bye tap that like button down below. Drop me a comment or two while you're down there.
And most importantly, do not forget you have yourselves a great day into Jeep In a Story in a Video.

that was very scary! that could blow apart and lock up! and that would be very bad! nothing
is good in that rear end, the other one you rebuilt I think a CJ5 was no where as bad as this one!

  8. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Tom Hohmann says:

When you pulled that lock pin out I thought it was too short and it had broken. If that was the only problem, it could have been fixed, possibly. But, as you said, that differential is toast. So many things wrong. Surprising it didn't grenade while Troy was driving it. I know I don't have to say about matching the front and rear diff gear ratios, you know that. Other videos have shown that.

More likely to have damaged the axle shafts than the case. No where near the correct preload on the bearings. If you have a 1/8 inch magnet that pin will come out, though it may suck a lot. It is amazing the abuse those Dodge housings can withstand.

Currently im on a 2001 XJ 50th anniversay model. 130k miles. Mechanically sound, several electrical niggles which all seem to get solved by replacing perfectly good fuses and relays. Clutch grenaded in it 1 month befote christmas 😮 but that might have been the fact it was undersize for thejob, the replacement had a bigger clutch plate. Gives me an average off 22 miles per gallon, so not too bed.

Not going to off road it. Its an anniversary edition and in the UK it will reach vintage status. Im going to keep it unmolested and enjoy it as my daily driver.

I am "old school" and believe that all transmissions should have drain plugs. If you find magnetized drain plug "furry" with metal bits, you KNOW there is trouble inside. And drain plugs encourage people to replace the oils, thus extending transmission/differential/transfer case life.

My mother had a 1967 Chevrolet Impala 327/300 w/power glide. My mother would drive-in it. , heard a noise coming from the rear end peri took it out for a drive, back street close to the house, at about 45 miles. An hour. The? Whole rear end block show both will stop spending and bag. Leave the street of black tire on the road about a 100' long. Several neighbors came running out of their house, thinking there was a wreck in the road. Called the wrecker took, it in to the decover who pulled the cover off the rear end, and that long retaining pin had come loose and struck the top of the carrier.
