Hello everybody! Good day to you! Welcome back! Uh, first and foremost I may need to apologize for the horseness of my uh audible output today. Uh, seem as I slept weird or something or I'm still suffering from like some kind of cold or whatever. My throat hurts really bad and it's kind of swollen so uh, my uh, my speech is slightly impaired. Anyway, we have us a unknown year some kind of flat boat it's from North Carolina according to the sticker right there.
uh customer States Tires are wearing irregularly and if we take a look right here, you can see some wear on that. Outer Edge Some wear on that inner Edge Uh, what we're going to do is just do a a tire rotation on a boat. That's what's happening today. That's right, we're not paying much attention to this U Tied Honda Pilot That's a pilot isn't it? Yeah, yeah, yeah, it's a pilot.
Yeah, we're not going to pay attention to the pilot. Uh, we're just here to make sure that these tires on this particular trailer are uh, in good shape shape. This is kind of a it's on the road right now. Yeah, we see some wear right here.
Yeah, this vehicle is on the road. It's just here for a pit stop from the Uh from North Carolina they're headed south to go do some fishing in the winter time in Florida So what we're going to do is I'm going to bring this vehicle on in and we're going to back that trailer unit uh, into my service stall over there. it's the one on this side. We're going to back the trailer in and uh, we're going to get her jacked up and I'm going to service the rear axle stocking.
Z We're going to rotate the tires and then send this truck out on its way. What do we have here for some mileage on our uh on our Honda looking like 296,429 So this is a, uh, kind of a stubby little trailer here or if I can back it up with any kind of relative. EAS I'm not used to backing up weed little trailers, just, uh, just big trailers. but I think I can do it backing up, checking the mirrors.
Let's try to get some swing on this bad boy here looking for a reference point behind me. I guess if I hear a crunch I know I've gone too far right? let's see looking good Dave spotting me how we looking Dave good right there I think we're good right there I'll take that parking the auto powering down. remove No here. let's prep the floor jack unit here.
I had the bar out of it I was using it as a breaker bar on some suspension earlier and pull this guy on out here. Like I said, we're doing a trailer rotation trailer tire rotation. That's going to be a a left and right swap. Get her jacked up! Uh, this has been an interesting couple of weeks.
First, I did a small engine repair on a weed eater and now we're working on some boats. Next week it's going to be airplanes and trains. So I'm looking for floor jack number two and I found out that I'm My Own Worst Enemy because this this one is also devoid of the Jack handle. Oops.
Never going to get any work done like this. So I'm going to run over here since I'm down at Jack and we will just grab a jack stand. I should be using jack stands anyway, but I'm not really going under the boat. I'm just kind of going next to the boat. Let's get this thing under there and we'll swap the Jack over to the other side here. Yeah, can't reach like can enough under a little more. This is the proper way to uh, do this in a sketchy fashion. Lean Back Nope.
I Guess it's going to have to go like right there if I can get the clearance out of the tires. let's see what we do coming down slowly and that didn't work. tires are touching the ground I think yeah. I'm have to go up to the next Notch Don't worry guys, it's my first day.
I'll be all right and we're going to go up one notch there trying again. Down there we've achieved elevation. Let's get this guy back in, move them back up. Now our trailer is levitating.
We'll check the bearings while we're here. We do is just give it a side to side wiggle. That's pretty good. I Feel nothing.
Let just check the other side. Okay, good. no bearing play. Okay, so you got 21 mm Fasteners right here.
Let's pop these guys off and get them. flip flop. All right. Coming in, check this out.
I Get to sit down on the job while I work on these wheels right here. That's fantastic. Unclicks there we go now. Remember you got to hose your trailers off after you pull them out of the boat ramp.
especially the Florida boat ramps cuz those are made out of saltwater air and if you don't hose them off, you're going to get rust and corrosion on everything. That would be bad. So anyways, there one is off. Let's roll this thing on over to the other side and get her.
flip floied Rolling Rolling Rolling Short video about tire rotations. If it wasn't a boat, we wouldn't be doing this. Funny how that works, isn't it? And I guess you got guys are cool with watching tire rotations. You were watching paint rust the other day and you watched the grass dry.
so it stands a reason we can watch tires rotate right? Better than watching. Uh I don't know. Music Awards on VH1 Does VH1 still exist? Is that a real real thing? or or no H? What's all this here? Just some spider webs and dirt? That's no biggie. Oh thanks Aaron for the gloves.
By the way, my blue gloves are. uh, they're gone. So I'm using A- rods purple gloves. He left them here so they're now.
they're mine. I've okay. A Little tire nozzle. This guy back into its home here.
I think I'm going to give these uh, this hubs a shot of Grease while it's all apart and while it's here cuz like I said, this thing did drive from North Carolina You guys can't even see what I'm doing over here working on stuff and you're staring at my knee I am terrible cameraman. This is weird. I'm kind of in a good mood for having a head cold. Perhaps that's uh, some kind of illness induced Euphoria Torque stick for the wind? Good. All right. let's take our other wheel right here and roll this unit on over to the driver's side. Was that the port side? No, that's starboard. This is the starboard side.
Port is left side. This is left side strong side, left side Strong side side strong side. We'll roll this guy on in. So what we've successfully completed here is a side to side rotation of the tires.
Now that could slow down and arrest. The Irregular Wear or the axle's bent and it needs to be replaced or rebent. Typically when you see weird axle or weird Tire weird tire wear words on a trailer. It's because you got a bent axle cuz it's a straight axle and the tires should be parallel and perpendicular parallel to each other, perpendicular to the ground.
Limited impact kicks Nce car I Wonder if it makes a tire squealy noise when we? uh, let the trailer down here? Let's find out we'll speed it up some more 88 mph. Then we can let her down, see what happens? Nope. no tires wheel. Okay, enough fooling around.
Let's get the Jack out and then put the Jack back in all the way up. Come here. Jack stand good, Stay Okay, let's check out our tire pressure. Let's get a digitized gauge here and some uh compressed there.
I Believe we're going to be seeking Uh 40 PSI What's my tire say? I Run Tire trailer trailer tires at the maximum allowable PSI on the sidewall and it looks like I Cannot see. Holler out if you guys see it. Where's my maximum recommended pressure? 350 K PA 50 psi Max Pressures Okay, so we're going to run these at 50. That's where they go.
Put that right there. Fire up our gauge here. It's digitized for accuracy. Plug it in and well.
29 PSI That'll give you some tire wear. We're almost at 50% capacity. 36 41 45 Not yet. 49.2 49.4 Oh, we're almost there.
50 psi Score! Okay, that one's good. Let's get the third. Tire Hey I wonder if somebody in a toll booth would charge you for an extra axle for this cuz they didn't realize that it wasn't on the ground. Think that's possible? it is.
Now this one says 60 PSI on the sidewall probably because it is a spare and we've got 29 50% capacity. Let's see what we get and 47 it's a tiny little guy. 57 59 60 PSI There we go. I'm cool with 60 cap back on cuz it's uh, if you don't put the Caps back on, you're a horrible person.
It's just the way it goes and we have one more over here on the driver side passenger side. 29 Yep, almost 50% capacity. Pretty sure this is going to help out with some of that irregular tire wear. 39 What we doing? 50 psi? Yeah.
50s load range B Four apply 48 49 50 Good Beautiful. good to go. Let's pop the Bearing Buddy caps off and shoot a little bit of Grease into those units. Okie Dos grease gun coming in.
it's got some lubricant inside. We're going to give this a couple squirts. Uh, this grease is suitable for marine application, so I'm I'm just fine using it. We're going to give this three or four pumps. Not so much that it overflows because it'll just pump grease out of the backside and make a huge mess. But three or four pumps is sufficient to get, uh, a nice new coating inside of those bearings. Let's get that other side real quick like you guys, Silly, I'm still going to send it right on. get it done, send it there we go.
There's that one who was that back in the day was it guys called Larry the Cable Guy or whatever. Get her done and got her de I think that was Larry the Cable Guy used to you stand up with Ron White That one's good to go. Poater salad well fellas I think uh, that's job Well complete. We rotated the tires, checked air pressure, got some lube on the bearings.
This thing's ready to rock and roll. It's uh, it's going to head south on its way to Puna Gorda they are going Goliath Grouper fishing which good luck cuz uh, there's fish the size of this boat down there. It's a lot of fish. So having said all that, I've got nothing more to offer you on this particular trailer other than to thank you guys for watching this trailer.
Certainly hope you enjoyed this, uh, relatively new and diverse uh, type of content. Let me know what you think about it in the comment section down below. Do not forget to tap that like button L down there. And most importantly, thank you guys for watching have a great day in video in a trailer and a transmission.
I.
Ray, I am a huge fan of your channel, but this video felt like you were struggling for content. I like the fact that you are prepared to do just about any job, just not sure this deserved a video of it's own.
Low air ware. Typical for trailers that sit a lot.
If both tires are worn on the outside, what have you actually accomplished by rotating these? The outsides are still worn. Would it not have been better to flip the tires on the rims and then rotate them? That way the tires are still spinning in the same direction they were previously but the wear gets moved to the inside.
Cool that you handled a simple rotation for a customer passing through and added a pressure check and lube. Aren't tires supposed to be inflated to manufacturer's pressure spec for load and not to max cold sidewall pressure?
Camera work stepping up the game 🫡
The axle doesn't have to be bent, it can just not be square to the frame of the trailer. Loose bolts shift, usually the right side shifts back from running off the road or hitting bad potholes.
Yea, that trailer shouldn't have been taken on a trip. If you're the A-hole pulling this boat across state lines, service your shit before you leave.
I started ruining trailer tires on my tent trailer and couldn't figure out why. I always checked the pressure and filled them to the max rated pressure before leaving on trips. During my last blowout, we limped into the tire store in Bishop, CA and the tire guy there told me, "Oh, no! You NEVER want to fill them to full max rated pressure when cold because, as the tire heats up during traveling, the pressure exceeds the max rated and destroys the tire." This is exactly what I had done. I now fill my 80psi rated tires to 65psi and have not lost a tire since.
One question, why? Next time tire rotation on a motorbike?
Hope they’re going to tie down all the gear in the boat before hitting the road….
So, two trailer tires. Both worn the same. Is rotating them going to fix the problem? Not
Shouldn't inflation be based on the load? Less load, less pressure. Don't need to inflate to max.
For highway use, I typically run tires at 4psi below max cold pressure listed on sidewall to account for thermal expansion when hot. Never had any issue doing so, trailer or otherwise. Even if using manufacturer door sticker pressures, many aftermarket tires are built for higher pressures than the stock units, so I ignore the actual number in those cases, and calculate the ratio out for a more appropriate pressure. For example, recommended 32 psi in a 44 psi max tire is completely different from 32 psi in a 51 psi max tire. 32 is approximately 72% of 44. 72% of 51 is approximately 37.1. Make adjustments according to equipment. I may have also gone above and beyond and thrown in balancing with that rotate. Then again, not everyone is neurotic like me. Either way, good of you to tackle little odd jobs for folks. Lots of shops won't bother.
Easiest way to remember port and starboard for non boat people port has four letters so does left.
Guss so. I'm watching.
Might want to tilt that motor up…..
This old boy wonders if those tires were ever checked for balance. High speed transit whilst out-of-balance would cause some serious wear issues. And the distance driven would have something to do with as well, would it not?
Ray did it again with Fat Joes song "Lean Back" 🤣😂🤣 you on a roll today Ray
Helicopters dropping in too for oil changes and joint lubrications.
As Juvenile sang "Back that thang up" 🤣😂😂🤣 I couldn't help myself, but when I heard the call to get on the dance floor from Ray I had too😂🤣🤣
thats where the expression posh comes from port out starboard home.
All three at 29 like they were intentionally set to that
I watch these videos no matter what You're wrenching on
Someone put 30lbs all around, to lazy to check the sidewall.
🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
I was thinking an out of balance tire would also cause it
Once at the Auto Electric Shoppe I was approached by two elder gentleman that Recognized as a former Aridzona State Congressman and Utah State Senator with busted boat and trailer in tow. I fixed both, the wiring and the brakes etc. not the old guys.
Of course it's just a trailer, and the wear suggests possible relationship to tire pressure. However, I always kinda thought that the max rated was also a relationship to the actual weight on the tires to have the ideal pressure, which might be lower than the maximum? But of course that takes us to the super common 32PSI on cars of a wide variety of weights. I think I'll worry about this after a few beers, or never again. Nice change of pace video Ray !!!
50 psi is bad news on light trailers, the trailer chassis will fail. Tyres are meant to absorb some of the vibration.
Well Ray i suppose i cant wait to see the airplanes n trains next week then XD 😛
“If I hear a crunch “I’ve gone too far”, that’s how I back a trailer
At least you have a head cold in warm Florida ! Imagine doing this same job outdoors way up north ⬆️.Bad bearings, will cause that wear. Also using a warp/out of round wheel. Id also be careful of Harbor Freight tire/wheel combo. They had a recall not too long ago. Since the load is relatively light 50 psi may be a bit high.
Merry Christmas to you and The Wife Unit!
Happy Holidays Ray 🙂 from the Philippines.
I'm impressed blindsiding loo
Would someone explain to me why you have to run trailer tires on a trailer, rather than a six ply car, or truck tire on a trailer. If you put a regular tire on a trailer, it would seem logical to me that if that tire can support a 6000 LB. vehicle it could certainly support a trailer that is only hauling half that weight, and use layman terms please!
As soon as I saw the outside wear on those tyres I knew it would be pressure related. Most people don't realise how high a tyre pressure should be, especially trailer or rv..😊
Enjoying the video Ray nicely done 👍❤❤. Take care of yourself and family and friends and be Blessed ❤️.
That sore throat is giving you a good radio voice.
Check air pressure in the tyres, under pressure can cause uneven ware.
Merry Christmas, Ray to you and your family!
I sure hope this person watches out for speed bumps.😂
I don't know why you can't share one jack handle with two floor jacks, but if you feel the need for Elfen safety to chuck an axle stand under a vehicle you are not even going to go underneath then go right ahead! Also shouldn't the other floor jack be chucked in the rubbish now it is useless without its own special individual handle?
eta: I think I have been Ray trolled like with the blue rags left in the intakes. Too much xmas spirit. LOL
Good job Ray but is it a possibility that the axle is not straight on the frame the u bolts where crooked in video, some time when in the boat ramps the trailer goes past the cement ramp and trailer wheels get stuck and the driver just gives her hell and moves the axle just a possibility have a nice holiday
What did that service cost?
Merry Christmas Ray Merry Christmas Lauren and Merry Christmas little children. Thank you Ray for having a video on Christmas it's a good video for Christmas Day
I think maybe 40 PSI on the road tires is good. Not much weight on that trailer. This thing is going to bounce like a 🏀. 🤣🤣
Gonna road test it on Alligator Alley🐊?
No obd socket? 😢
Merry Christmas, Ray! Hope you are feeling better!
Merry Xmas Ray & Wife Unit, would it not have been prudent to use the spare tire in the rotation? stands to reason that these spares mostly sit out in the weather and will end up with dry rot. Paid for the tires, might as well use it
Couldn't it be that the axle is slightly askew on the frame? The trailer may be crabbing a little
Merry Christmas to you and your family from my family to your family in Jamaica
Imho, i think that axle should have been propped closer to the wheels, its flimsy and i think it was already bent a bit, hence the outer abnormal wear of the tires. Also some cars with solid rear axles have stickers not to prop them like that. But, regardless, love you and ur videos, you the best.
I was hoping for some Brake Cleaner on those rusty dirty hubs.
Just so you know…the recommended air pressure you should run in your tires is located on the driver's door or driver door jamb. The max pressure recommendation located on the tire is simply stating the maximum pressure that the tire is capable of holding. Trailers also have a tag or sticker on the tongue stating the recommended tire pressure. I'm very surprised Ray didn't mention any of this. Airing your tires up to the maximum pressure stated on the tire is wrong.
I would be embarrassed if I showed up at Ray's with underinflated tires. Or worse DIRTY battery terminals! 😆
Check on the front spring bushings
different. just saying
Love the videos!!!! Have question I’m in need of some help with my 2015 mustang GT having abs light and airbag lite coming on and won’t let me change the drive mode. Also had a new clutch installed few weeks ago now I get an engine lite which shows codes as bank 2 and 8 misfiring.. have read it’s from not having a correct crank relearn installed also when driving it every now and then it will go into a limp mode and lose all power for about 30 seconds idk what the heck the issue is. I live in Orlando fl any way I could bring car into your shop as now feel like most mechanics not very truthful and don’t fix the issues and create more problems. Thanks for any help
I can’t believe I watched someone rotate tires on a trailer and found it entertaining.😂 Being a lifelong boater here in the northeast, I started to cringe when you went to grease the bearings, but then, the great disclaimer! It was marine rated grease! Great vids Ray. I watch all the time.
…..& here you titled it BASS…i come to hear boom boom speakers & get pilot fished 😢
Tire pressure or lack of pressure can cause uneven ware.
Just because they are on a trailer, does not mean they are trailer tire. ????
Good job Ray merry Christmas to your family and you
so that axel is bent or the boat is overloaded
Back up until it sounds expensive then pull forward one foot
Merry Christmas to your family have a happy new year to🎉
Yup, that low tire pressure was the culprit.
Merry Christmas
Merry Christmas Ray and family and Dave…
Wondering if trailer is continually swaying at speed?
Had similar tire wear on a trailer that that very gently swayed most of the time on the highway.
Increased tire pressure & moved a few more heavy things to front of trailer (i.e. we increased weight on tow ball a bit), swaying stopped, tire wear improved dramatically, handling downhill & under heavy braking improved.
Much easier to tow & all the gear tied into trailer had less scuffing from continually moving around.
YMMV.
that was fun! get well soon ray
I was always told not to run max pressure unless it was a heavy load. And I'm pretty sure that boat isn't that heavy.
Why on earth do people insist on using crap Chinesium made cross ply trailer tyres? When I visited the United States every trailer camper I saw had this Chinese crap marked trailer use only on them. I had a Tyre shop for twenty years and always used 8 ply light truck radial tyres on my clients trailers and campers, and never had any weird wear or failures. 😁🇦🇺
No way ever should you run such a light weight trailer at maximum tire pressure, remember it is half the weight of a car, or less and will end up bouncing around when being towed.
The shackles that hold the axle on the trailer chassis may have shifted, that would cause the feathering on the tires. If the axle were bent the tires would not spin true.
Merry Christmas!!!
I just got some wobbly bits for Christmas!!
Hi Ray and wife unit and Dave and his families merry Christmas to you all and happy new year 🇺🇸🇺🇸 video on boat was awesome and as always you all be safe 🇺🇸🇺🇸
Was expecting to watch a full length epic video – but instead watched a short trailer. 🙃
If tyres wear in the middle over inflation, if tyres wear outside degas under inflation.
Wow Ray is really expanding I wonder if the plane will be able to make it both under the power lines and between the power poles when it comes in. Looking forward to brake clean used to start the turbine. At this rate, nuke sub by early February?
That’s funny you said TaterSalad cause that’s my nickname all my friends call me. 😁
Merry Christmas Raymond
Tires can handle 50 psi, how much can the wheels handle?
As stated on this post Tyre wear can be attributed to the pressure in said tyres, those tyres show signs of under inflation, I would say that a pressure in the mid 30s would have been fine, I would never run a tyre close to or at it's max allowable pressure, as this will generate more heat, and more wear, and a very bouncy trailer
Merry Christmas to you and your family Ray.
Rotating these tires will not solve the wear issues. The hubs have too much negative camber. They make camber plate wedges to adjust it or you must have a shop heat and bend the axel tube.
You need to check air pressure also.
ROF Your supposed to do it without the CRUNCH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Give yourself a Covid test asap.
Merry Christmas Ray !!
u should also balance those wheels.. that is a possibility it wears uneven
third brake light out on the tow vehicle
Weird to hear my hometown mentioned in a video. Live in Lake Suzy now.
My tires rotate EVERY time I drive…
Watching this video reminds me of something I noticed. A lot of people don't grease their trailer hitch ball. I wonder why. It reduces wear on the ball and the hitch.
Love the variety!
It would be super cool to see Ray work on a boat engine!
Not an outboard but more like an inboard type motor.
Change is always good Ray!!!!
Merry Christmas Ray and wife unit.
