We got an oldie but of goodie here folks. 2003 It's the Dodge decoder. It's got the big 47 Magnum and it comes with a letter and he writes uh dear, Eric I Recently replaced the fan clutch which apparently has been broken for some time. I'm hearing other odd sound since replacing the fan clutch.
I Do know the AC compressor bearings are starting to fail. Uh, the shaft on the water pump seems loose. Well, I Agree with that fella. Um, let me hold this out here so I can read it all the way.
Uh, the shaft on water pump seems loose if you rock the fan front to back. I'm guessing that it has all the original belt pulley which may be starting fail. The previous owner did some kind of botched up wiring on the blower fan, so if it doesn't come on, just move the wiring harness by the blower fan and it will come on. I've not had time to repair the wiring.
Uh, if you can repair it for under 800, don't call me. We just need this old girl to last three more years. Love always your faithful customer So here we are: Uh I did start it up obviously to bring it in and there is some kind of bearing type noise under the hood here. It growls pretty good, but he says he knows that the AC compressor bearings are bad and wanted me to replace the compressor.
and then uh I also bought a water pump based off from uh, what he was saying here. So what I'm thinking is we'll just verify that the uh, you know compressor be where all this noise is coming from. It is quite noisy I Don't remember if this tank just comes out of the way easily I think they do. Would be nice to get this out of the way.
Get the get the fan off so we're not hearing the fan. Roar And then we can see if any of the other bearings are noisy. Looks like there's a couple screws that go through the front here. 8 mm socket.
see if we can't take those out. I think this top half splits apart. They don't look like they've been touched, but I would have thought this would have been out to do the clutch. Maybe you can sneak it up and out.
All right. There's one bolt, that's what that thing looks like. Another one over here. Hopefully we can get it without pulling the battery tray and there it is.
So there's the second one and I believe it'll make this loose. Oh yeah, oh, look at that. unplug the washer pump and looks like a low coolant reservoir or a low coolant sensor possibly? or is that a no, you dingdong your L washer sensor. Come on little fingers.
No, not today. Oh tough guy huh? And then to wash your hose, pull that off. it's probably going to PT Oh yeah, hold our finger over it. Then on this side, we should have or coolant H and kind of snake that around.
Oh oh gosh, there's a squirter here we go. We get this thing out of here so that gives us some room to work to sop up my mess. Should be able to see see the water pump pulley chucking back and forth. There's going to be a little play in your uh uh fan clutch here, but the in her pulley, she's got a little hitch in her goody up. So let's undo this fan clutch and then we can start it. and then we'll be able to heer the bearings and figure out if it's just the AC Then we pull the Bel off and kind of reverifying it that way we have to do the water pump anyways. So this is why we're kind of going about. uh, this approach took this off.
Give us a little more room busting out some new tools newi is I've used it a few times. It's the uh, Pneumatic fan clutch tool real nice. This one's made by Maco I think a lot of companies make them. However, use it on the old air hammer so there's that half and then we'll get another brand new tool.
The brand new Astron Pneumatic Thor 401 Long barrel, beautiful trigger on this thing. Get your crack. Yes, it cracked unlike me on Fortnite I Am not cracked. There's that.
Going to use the old screwdriver megaphone trick I Showed that in a video not too long ago. Everybody thought it was amazing. It's Not super amazing I Showed how to do this long time ago on a a short or something, but it just, you know, amplifies the sound. You know it's just essentially the old school screwdriver on the ear trick.
except it has an amplifier. so there's that. Let's uh. fire this pig up.
See what she sounds like Like contact? Well, the air conditioner is very loud. Yes sir. Wow. that's deafening.
So bearing here in the AC is definitely loud. A lot of miles on this pig. bucks 70ish, 160, something? 167. Maybe Guy wants to do the whole compressor.
We've already spoke about this with the customer. Let's pull the belt off. kind of give the other pull these a flick. I See, it is a Napa belt so it's definitely not the original.
Um, probably have to have some tools to take it off. Maybe. Nope, not today. Grab a hold of that little guy.
so take our belt off. Leave it like that cuz we didn't mark it. Let's see what way the Napa sign's going. That way, we don't have to mark it.
Okay, the Nappa faces us, so we'll put it back on in that direction. Oh, or actually spins pretty hard. Like real hard. All right.
Well, let's start ripping and tearing. I'm going throw the AC machine on it. get that draining down, We'll get this, uh, water pump knocked out of here I Think these are pretty easy pumps to do so. We'll throw a bucket under there, see if we can't catch a little bit of our coolant, and then get the AC draining down too.
Let's get this party started. I Think we need to remove the belt tensioner here that exposes the bolts on the water pump we need to get to once. that's out of the way. Just got to peel all the bolts off it.
It better swap batteries. Whoa. We got a squirter. Get your bucket ready folks than that's everybody.
I Think these three bolts are longer than the other ones we took out. Yes, see, so we'll keep them where they need to be. You really can't screw it up, but woo just. D there's that. uh I suppose if you want to be a little more civil about it, you can just drain the radiator, but this is just how I do. We'll get the rest of it out of there with a food extractor here. I'm just using a carbide scraper now going to dig off the big chunks of corrosion here. They're coming out a little scrubby.
oh that looks good that me Real good some of that. Crut out of there. All right. Then we're just going to clean off the mating surface here.
I'll probably get some brake clean. No job is complete without brake Parts cleaner. All right. let's go see if I remember to order a water pump.
Pretty sure I did and we did. We got one with a one piece bearing assembly and unitized seal Precision Ground shafting Hub Quality Forge housing with a Precision Oh precisely balanced impeller with replacement gaskets included not a sponsor. this is brand new made in China Like everything else in the world, we're going to put this gasket down in here which is's a tight fitting little bugger. It does have a couple alignment pins so or alignment spots here so we're going to line those up.
I'm going to just kind of randomly go around and get it started because if you start working it around, you'll end up with like 4 Ines of gasket over here that doesn't fit in anything. so I like to kind of start it in the corners and on the alignment guides, then try to push it straight down without walking it around and then once you get it started then you're usually in good shape. There we go I Just keep going around, make sure it's all good. When you get all done, say it's all good, it's all good.
Just like that. Let's go look up our torque specs. Oh who remembers what way this thing goes? Oh boy, we'll try it like this. We'll get real old.
C Try 18 Fig Newton Met no it's not. It's 25 new M 18 lb feet of torque I think was the official spec like I Say you can't really mess these bolts up where they go because if this if all you have is short bolts and long bolts. if you put the short bolt and a long bolt hole, it just goes in and doesn't hit anything. you know what I mean so don't sweat it.
too bad. And all the long bolts are all the same size. None of them appear to have thread sealer on them. Service data: Didn't say anything about using thread sealer so we're just going for it.
There's that, and then we'll Zippy zap them back down there. Okie dokie, it shouldn't take much. Let's go through and double check them all here. It's just about hand tight, you know, just barely tight.
Usually stuff like this with a o-ring type seal isn't very tight. We're hitting about 20 foot lbs there. So yeah, we did them somewhere between 18 and 22 so that's a piece of cake. Let's get our tensioner back on.
So this thing has a little Notch I Clean the corrosion off from this too and off the timing cover there. There you guys saw a little Notch goes where the bolt hole goes or where this bolt is down here. You can't screw this up either. Technically put that on there torque that to spec and you're good to go. Well almost good to go. Got to get rid of some of our mess, take a little bit of this and give it and overall deing think that defective can here now that part of it is finished I Had to wash my patties. go help my sister for a minute. We need to remove this so we can remove this.
That is my guess coming after with the classic 10 mil oh intake broke on this side makes it easier. nothing's hanging on. Yeah, it's all this spinning round and round like a record baby over here here. Um wrong hole fella.
get this thing back on there. it's all greased up. Typically there would be a bolt here and a bolt here, but often times these intakes are broken. On the Big 47s we have evacuated the system.
a pound 14 oz I believe is what we removed. We'll unplug the compressor clutch. Uh, we might even have the tools out here we need. No, no yes no.
so it looks like we might need a 15. Let's get what we can while we here. Just like a can of folders, anybody? drink folders? anym I don't have TV So I don't know about if it's an advertisement. Anyways, when I as a kid it was.
It was also the best part of waking up. Maybe they don't even make it anymore I don't know Why do I remember the car coffee commercials? You remember the uh, what was it the captain? we forgot the Columbian coffee then the guy would turn the airplane around I don't remember any other one, any other commercials but those ones. There's a map sensor here on the end of the manifold so you got have to calm down a little bit here. Eric Let's get a pry bar you mother lover.
We got the oil fill cap here I Don't think we need to remove it. We should be able to wiggle up off here. However, on the back side of this pump, there's your spacer bushing that takes up space I don't know the technical name for it. You'll see once we get it off.
If we could get that to relax a little bit so she wants to wiggle out out this direction. I'm going to get a little punch I'm going to tap that in a little, free it up. Maybe might not have done anything. Why won't you comply? There we go.
It's totally non-c compliant. Keeps wanting to go this way. Come on. Okay, I'm going to pun you right in the face.
I'm going to stick a bold in there to keep it from going that way and see if we can't wiggle it up here. Remove the bolts and slip the O compressor right out of the way. We're going to grab our cylinder. it just got out of school.
How do I know that? because it's graduated I Don't know if this such a dead so we're going to drain the oil out of this little guy see how much oil we get out of it. I Didn't get any oil out of the system when I evacuated it which is a little concerning. Has nothing to do with the bearing failure on the front. because this bearing is simply an external bearing. we're not getting much there out of the lines. Rotate it over here. Not much there fella. Not much at all.
10 mL Drain it out of body of the compressor here, spin it around and shake it all over here. I Think that's about it folks. What we end up with just shy of 20 ml. Now, technically, if the system's never been opened I mean this looks like all original lines and condenser and stuff on it, but I Can tell.
Usually when you're replacing a compressor, you drain out the old compressor, then you take your new compressor and drain it and then refill it back with the amount removed. Um, usually I get somewhere between 40 and 50 m out of a compressor. but uh, we're going to air on the side Of caution here. let's go.
D get our new compressor. Hopefully it's here. hopefully it's the right one. Rookie mistake if it's not, and then we'll drain it.
and let's say we'll probably put like 30. We'll put 35 MERS back in it. I Looked in surface data to see if sometimes there's a chart if you're replacing the compressor. How much oil to add to each individual component? but Chrysler like a lot of Manufacturers if you're replacing the compressor, replace it with the amount of oil that's in the one removed so that's where we're at.
So I Took the old Uh washers off the Ac lines, went upstairs, got us some new ones out of our AC line kit or AC gasket washer kit, miscellaneous parts kit I Guess 407405 407405 is part number from Napper if you need these washers, so there's that. Let's get our compressor on there now. it should slide in. A whole lot nicer.
Technically, there's that. We'll stick our long bolt through here. Feels like it's started. Get the other bolt here.
there's that little F and then we've got the other one back there. and then of course, our lines. Perfect. We'll snug these up a little bit before we crush it down.
We'll get this little guy here in the back, torque that one to spec, and then we'll torque these ones to spec. there's that one, there's that one and then get the Uh line here for the AC Need a bit of an extension Tor that one to spec? Course, we'll come back through with a Tor Crunch and everything before we're finished. Plug it up, go find our belt, remember the Napper was facing us and then we're going to take a little shot in the dark here. Oh no, we don't have to take a shooting shot in the dark.
We've got it here on our radiator support. Look at that. We don't even have to guess. that's good.
We're going to need a tool. I Imagine I Don't think we can do it by hand putting back on. Maybe we can look at that. Some days you get lucky we're off the power steering pump here.
Okay, so the belt's back on. Ah goty Josh over there doing a wheel bearing. We'll put that back in there. These our 10 mil that we already have. the other side does not matter. CU If you remember correctly, that side is broke. here it is. Oh yeah yeah.
got jam on a little Notch up there on your air filter. We'll notch on this one. Nice nice job man. I'm going to hook the AC machine up.
We're going to get it under a vacuum. We'll pop the uh thing that goes here, your washer jug and your expansion tank. We'll pop that baby on and we'll charge it up and fill it up with some coolant and move on to the next job. sh I Guess we're going to need more.
Uh, what? we can do. Uh, now we've got a little bit of Co it. We can start it, make sure it's nice and quiet. If it is, then we'll throw that noisy old fan back in there.
Fan clutches are or mechanical fans are so loud sometimes it's hard to hear anything beyond them. but let's uh, start it up. we've got I don't know. probably a gallon and a half of cooling in it so far, so we should be okay in that regard.
Wait I got a little bit on the Belt there can leave that off, but let's go ahead and fire it up here for a little bit while that's still under a vacuum. or while it's building the vacuum and see what what it sounds like. contact. Oh yeah, that's way better.
Oh, she's quiet now. boys. All right, All right, there's that. We'll give her a little tap and should be good to go.
Only took a little bit more. Uh Co So I ended up taking a little over 2 gallons. Kind of surprise. That's quite a bit.
We're going to unhook the high side here. We'll move that to the side, make sure our cap has our o-ring or gasket in it. It appears to to put that in, had a pound 14 oz in it. Uh, total capacity 1.75 So that's a pound and 12 oz.
So it was slightly overcharged. So let's take and charge it up here. at least according to this. I Know maybe somebody threw a can or something in it at some point? Who knows.
Like could say. all the components on it look pretty original. Doesn't look too bad here. Under the hood see the top of the frame.
There is looking a little crusty though. so as soon as that's done purging there out, that'll throw a little charge on there. we'll fire it up. I did tighten up the fan clutch and then I went back through and torqued everything uh to factory specs off camera so as I wouldn't bore you guys with all that contact.
I see the money lights on and it's my fault idiot. This just about fall oh she getting chilly looks good, sounds good. Wait for a thermostat to cycle here that is a balm me 84 f today. moisture level's quite High running about 50 on the inside so 34 difference so that's pretty good.
We just started up too cool reset his engine light for him. Good thing is inspections not du I feel like real dinged on it's cold I Can tell you that I've switched over to the Uh Canadian scale or I as I should say the rest of the world. Every place but America that uses the Metric system I wish we'd just convert. To be honest with you, it's so much easier. You know zero is cold 100 HP figure out everything in between. So we're driving down the road at a 10.2 de C Metric system where everything's divisible by 10. It's a great system. I Don't know why the US has never converted.
Maybe somebody can enlighten me on that, my wheels. We still insist on using Imperial system. I Don't know. Temperatures hold nice and steady.
Everything looks pretty good. 166 That's what's got on it. AC's blown a b me 10 to 11 out of the dash. Oh look at this fresh black top.
Doesn't it just make you want to pull off a? Mater Hey look at me I'm the first one on a new road but I think people driving on this road already? Well, we'll leave it at that folks. 166 223 We got to go right down. We'll grab our thermometer here and go and write it up. So easy fix.
C Diagnos the whole thing so worked out pretty well. Uh AC Compressor water pump. Easy job on these 47s and I don't have anything else to say. It's hot, stuffy, it's humid.
it's disgusting for September we've had, um, like this week long of just 90 weather, it's been just Savage I think today's the last day of it though. hopefully back into the 70s again. Call me crazy but I like these little 4.7 l. I wish they just made it a little bigger instead of giving us the semi-hemy just make it a little bigger. Make it say 318 cubic inches but single overhead cam. It would have been badass dude. They're not that bad. My buddy has a Dakota with 310,000 mi on it. Granted he is a mechanic and it's probably most certainly not the original transmission cuz we know those transmissions… But if you find one with the manual transmission id snap it up in a heartbeat Even the full size RAM came with those engines. If you get one like a two-wheel drive, regular cab long bed with a 5-speed manual that little 47 would pull that truck. Great
I just changed the bearing on my Hondoo AC compressor. Works like new. Only cost ยฃ15 ๐ธ

Hey Eric I got a 2011 kia Sorrento with the 3.5 that's not receiving the crank signal at the starter to crank the engine. Was wondering if you had any suggestions. All the fuses and ignition switch are good. Just no crank signal.
Eric 0 is cold though it gets colder here weโre currently running about minus 28. The coldest itโs been this year so far. Up until now itโs been exceptionally mild for Manitoba zero to minus 10 or 15. Anyhow back to 0 is cold 100 is hot 100 Celsius is way too hot 212F which is dead not just hot. 20 is comfortable 30 is quite warm 40 is very hot. Just being an obnoxious Canuck. Good video as always learn something every SMA vid. Just wondering what you think of the Chrysler 4.7? I havenโt heard a lot of good things about it.

Fifty degrees is a little high for the outlet temperature. Maybe a bit more refrigerant while watching the gauges closely would drop the temp down into the low 40's. And wow, that was an easy water pump to replace. I'd take them all day.

The US has been going through a very slow โsoftโ metric conversion since the 1970โs. Virtually everything on cars is now metric, with conversion used to the inch-lb system for things like speed and mpg. The labels on food and drink containers have been marked in both systems for many years and some things like soda bottles are metric first. Some building materials are now metric first. The โhardโ metric conversion that was done by all other countries in the 1970โs was more efficient.

In Canada the metric system was gradually introduced starting in 1970. I recall a local radio station telling morning listeners the time is now 147.2462 milli-eons. Apparently it caused quite a stir until it dawned on them it was April 1st.

Imperial system is superior for general work, machining and cooking. Everything is a split of the previous division so you can measure without a ruler (1/2 is 1/2 of 1, 1/4 is 1/2 of 1/2, 1/8 is 1/2 of 1/4, etc.).
For machining it goes to much more precision than metric.
Imperial is a way of working naturally with the hands, metric is a way of measuring scientifically and in a somewhat unnatural way. When you get into precision, the numbers start getting all wonky.
On the surface, it seems like metric is better, but from a practical standpoint, imperial is superior.
It is interesting to read about on wiki or the Internet to get a better conception, but if you think about trying to divide a piece of lumber evenly without a ruler (like a simple farmer or builder) imperial begins to make more sense.
I live in Canada, most people here use both metric and imperial.. most will tell you what they weigh in pounds, and tell you their height feet and inches, but we use metric for speed, distance and temperature, at least people my age anyway.
Our teachers hated metric when it came out and even they didnโt know how to do it. So teachers had it trashed. A few years later we were taught it. Car companies did not want to retool to use it bitching to congress and when it was supposed to go into effect they paid them off and that was the end of it
From the Chicago area Eric, I know only to well the rust issues. However, Eric, you really need to appreciate the beautiful scenery you get on your test drives.
Itโs to bad because in the day you use to be able to buy a pulley, bearing and clutch kit for the A/C compressors. Now you have to get the entire compressor, which comes with the discharge and recharge fees.

My daily driver is a 2003 Dakota 4.7L. 236,000 miles, its had a few issues but overall its a great truck.
Someday one of these Presidents is going to force us to go metric. We'll hate him for the first couple of years and then praise him for the next hundred.

Just to add to the metric/imperial discussionโฆ when it comes to volumes the US is different again. The American pint, quart and gallon are smaller than their imperial namesakes. Ie an American gallon is .86 of an imperial gallon.

I always viewed the metric vs imperial as two different perspectives. Metric: the man as it relates to nature; imperial: nature as it relates to man. For so many things, especially science and automotive stuff, the metric system is phenomenal. But when you're eyeballing something or explaining something to someone that isn't accustomed to measurements, then the imperial system all of the sudden makes sense. How high is the ceiling…. about 9 feet… say that to most anyone anywhere and they can get it. Please trim two finger widths from my hair.. 2 inches, you've got it. 100 is really hot and 0 is really cold as it relates to me. In Celsius 0 is very cold and 100 is intangibly hot, to me… but not to nature. Fractions, though… yeah.. that's gotta go.
Zero is cold and 100 is hot in Fahrenheit too

Had a 2003 Durango with the 4.7. Got 360K miles out of it – never had a head off. Replaced all the accessories, Water Pump, A/c Compressor, Alternator and PS pump over the lifetime of the vehicle. Engine purred right along until the driver side seat belt locked.
I am curious to why you are using the 401 instead of the 498 air hammer? Will you continue to use both and only use each one in specific situations? I am not a mechanic so I am trying to understand the point of owning/using both.

I agree 100% with you on the metric system..I believe itโs because a politician doesnโt want to be the bad guy pushing it or somethingโฆ.
If the compressor was still good, a Maxsam replacement clutch kit could have been an option .. in this case, with the good access, done in place, without removing the compressor.
Because you still need a SAE ratchet to drive those metric sockets! LOL

The resistance to flipping completely is strange. Many industries in the US use metric but make conversions to non-metric for consumers.

Well Eric, here in America we use the English measuring system because America used to be an English colony. Metric system was created by a French scientist in the 1500's
Had an '02 just like this, and I still miss it. Basically gave it to my brother at 200k and it's still running around being driven by my nephew. Around 150k I had to replace the waterpump, alternator, and left front wheel bearing, but otherwise just normal maintenance – many Toyota trucks wish they were as reliable.
I have 4.7 so good to see I live in Florida so the systems you repaired this this Iโm sure Iโll end up doing
