In a previous video we had a look at a customers 2009 Jeep Grand Cherokee that had a customer complaint of the tach and speedo dropping out. We quickly discovered that the CAN B data bus was having some issues and we narrowed it down to the front control module and some corrosion. Now it is time to get it fixed.

All right folks. Welcome back! Went down to Wilber Two Pole of Bath and got us a body control module as they have a listed or front control modules we talked about. This one came out of a 2010 Jeep Commander Uh, same part number the P0 469 Or2 221 Alpha Golf this is an alpha Fox Trot Usually Chryslers go up in succession so hopefully this is just some newer. Hardware Uh, this does have the vehicle configuration stored on it.
I've yet to look in service data to see if they are programmable. They're obsolete. you new? Uh, plus they were over $800 when they were new. Uh, when I went up to get this one off the vehicle, it was already undone.
It was just literally laying against the fuse box, but it looks clean. I don't see any corrosion on the pins or up here. So I've pulled this one up. we're going to unplug it.
When I drove the vehicle in, it was still, uh, still acting up because it still broke. So we're going to take the screws out of this little guy. Yeah, I don't know why somebody had it undone. down at the Wilbert's the fuse box was still there, the connectors were still there I figured as soon as I picked it up, it would be all corroded.
but it wasn't To my surprise, I didn't have a chance to go to Wilbert So I had actually ordered one of these from another local salvage yard a a full service yard where they drop it off to me and that guy showed up with it this morning and it wasn't even the right part. He brought the fuse box with no front control module on it even though I was very specific when I was on the phone with him of which part we needed. he's yeah, yeah I got you I know what you need. Been doing it for 80 years.
He knew exactly what I needed. and then the funny part of that was the fuse box box he brought looked like a Chia Pet It was the greenest fuse box I've ever seen. So I didn't even bother uh to contact that salvage yard to find out if they had the front control module off it because it's corroded as the fuse box was. they sent me I can only imagine what the front control module look like.
So we're going to take and hopefully pull this little guy off here. Come on little fella being a real piss poot huh? Yeah, tough guy huh? All right. So we got her off. so there's the OG Get a little closer look at the green Cruses now this one.
We're not even going to bother screwing it down yet cuz I'm sure we we're going to have all sorts of problems I believe it has Vin information stored in here and amongst other things besides vehicle configuration. so let's see what kind of issues we have. We're just going to plug in a scan tool I'm going to set the screws to the side here. Those are the four little screws that hold that in.
We'll plug in a scan tool and see uh, see how many problems we have now. Kind of good news. kind of bad news. Uh, bad news is we got a airbag light on.
All the other codes have cleared. Everything else seems to be happy. We have a configuration mismatch. uh just to make sure that uh, this code wasn't there originally I did pop the original uh front control module back in? uh and it's not. So it's a vehicle configuration data that's that's missing. You know because this? this is different. This is VD differently than than the OG uh I can't find. There's nothing in service info about even replacing the front control module with a new one other than just you know unbolted sticking on.
They've got information I can find on reprogramming the PCM TCM but that was it. So like I say if this was a newer Chrysler with a tip them I would plug in yte and push the button for vehicle configuration restore and we'd be you know Off to the Races uh. The good news is is it fixed our problem because now the vehicle will run without the tack bouncing and that was the original customer compl plain. Okay so let me fired up here.
but of course you know we have an airbag light on. but I I let it run for a little while here. You know I mean it was the other one. It was bouncing in the first 15 seconds so still cold.
So it's title in high but but hold it steady. So we did. We did fix the customer complaint, but we're in a a little bit of a dilemma because you know they don't make that module new. So we I'm going to have to do some research as far as what we have to do to get the correct Vin and the correct vehicle configuration in it.
Uh I do not pay for Chrysler software uh yearly. Uh Chrysler is one of the most expensive Oems that you can pay for. So I don't buy it yearly. Uh so I would have to buy a short-term subscription uh to even uh to even test it out.
which we may do. Um, you know we may do just to see I did poke through. You know, poke through on here. Uh, because there is the option to uh write the VIN number to it and you can only do that on a brand new module I tried it anyways just for the heck of it.
I went through and hit you know set Vin uh it let you put it all in and stuff but it doesn't write it to it it you know, creates an error and then I went under the um uh program network configuration which allows you to add and remove uh different modules off the can B bus. uh but that's that's simply that's all it does. One thing that had me a little bit, uh, about wondering about something here: I'll show you it shows original Vin and current Vin Now this is not the VIN number for this vehicle. this is the VIN uh, that's off the vehicle that we took it off from.
uh tipm. Also, show this information and you're allowed to write it one time and that's that gets changed when you do a configuration restore. So this kind of elude, you know, makes me think that perhaps it can be changed. So I think what we'll do is, we're going to uh, get the Yte, I'm going to buy a short-term subscription and then we're going to go in and uh, you know, see if that option's there.
So I don't know what else to do, but that's where we're at I Went ahead and bought the subscription. Uh, as I mentioned to uh, Ych 2 after passing 35 different security tests, getting secret codes, paying the piper, we're in and uh, so some of you are familiar with this. screen it. Uh, we've used Uh Yte in the past for diagnosing stuff, but when the Pric has got so high, I just quit paying for it. You know for the years we just buy, uh General Motors Now for the year Chrysler Ford we we buy as needed. Uh, so we come in here and this is all the topology so this looks similar to that. uh very first picture that we printed out. We can see all the modules don't have any codes except for the airbag.
There's a Flash update for the PCM But what we're con concerned with or what we're hoping for is that we have this button right here: Restore Vehicle Configuration which I think if we click that it's probably going to bring us down to uh vehicle preparation Restore Vehicle configuration Okay, uh, let's just see it's probably not going to do it because we don't have. This procedure has been updated. Oh okay, I had that backwards. We got to go back to Guided Diagnostic that tells us that it's back under that menu but that's it's.
probably going to give us the finger because we don't have a subscription to Tech Authority So let me go on and buy my tech Authority subscription. This is where Chrysler gets you to program. You have to have like let's say, we wanted to program. We wanted to program the engine control module.
You've got to buy your subscription to Ytec. Then you got to buy a subscription to Tech Authority and then you got to buy a programming token. Uh, so it'll cost you just base costs. You have the laptop you have, uh, an interface device.
It's going to cost you about $135 just to buy one token to do a programming on a single on a single. Vin So yeah, Chrysler is a huge ripoff. Uh, they're two to three times more expensive than any other. OEM uh, domestic wise.
anyways. But anyhow, enough CH Chat I'm going to get my tech Authority subscription I'll be right back. We got sidetracked there for a little bit talking with the customer I did go on and get the tech Authority subscription or Stanis or whatever the heck they want to call it now. So let's go guide a vehicle diagnostic.
Review this. This procedure will update restore vehicle configuration based on sales code and Vin Now if you're doing a tipm, If this was an actual tipm, this is the process you use to rewrite the VIN to it and reconfigure the vehicle. So hopefully this works on a front control module. It downloads it from Chrysler and then hopefully it can write the configuration data to the front control module.
There it is this, uh, usually got to unplug it. Yep, okay. Shut off ignition, close the doors, unplug tool. Wait for 1 minute.
I'm going to do that. We We're waiting for the modules to power down in this thing. We got another Jeep over here. This one here ate up a cam shaft so she's getting all new lifters. I Got that head put on it. Got to get that head cleaned up and put on it, but it gobbled up that cylinder so you can see she's gouged up. Got another one here. Gouch up.
This is the one that was misfiring and then there was another one back here. just starting to eat away on that cam lobe so it makes a mess out of these lifters. That one there's pretty well flat spotted. So anyhow, that's what we have going on over here.
That's my second. Hemi this week got another one out in the parking lot of 2015. we just got n doing also. So yeah, it's a Jeep thing you wouldn't understand.
Our minute has been up. Let's look the key on I Don't want to start it because uh I don't know if I got cables in the way out here. Let me, uh, hook back up to it here and see if our new VIN number is in there now. All right, we're back up and running.
We'll go to all Dtc's yeah, we still have an active code in the airbag module. Interesting. Well that's frustrating. We'll clear them out.
that's going to come back I'm sure and I would think it would have gone to uh y so it just came back. Yeah, u1415 Let's go into the front control module here. uh and let's see if it has the new vin in it now. Uh, we're going to go to configuration.
We should see the old Vin and the new vin I'm thinking no, maybe it's under uh I know where it is on the Alto details. probably here. Yeah, see, it does not change the VIN so that's interesting. We do a vehicle configuration restore and it did not change the VIN from original to current so that's that's where we're having an issue still, so that's frustrating.
Um I'm going to poke around here and see uh, see what we can do. Well, it's hopeful there for a minute on this one folks. Uh, I'm at my end of my rope. Uh I don't know what to do I'm going to contact Keith over L1 Auto Diagnostics to see if he has you know any kind of backd door way to perhaps rgin eyesee this module to write the correct Vin to it so it'll do the configuration restore properly I Tried the configuration restore again.
Uh and and it doesn't work. Uh, at this point if he doesn't know I may have to go online onto some of our uh profession forums like Di.net and put that question out there to the community to see if anybody's had success or knows what to do or even check Google in some cases. Uh, you know somebody's been down this road. Certainly I'm not the uh, not the first and without new parts availability, this is all we have.
We have access to used ones and unfortunately I think in the future this is what's going to Total cars. Um, you know we're not going to have classic car shows with, you know, 2015s and newer showing up just because all the electronics are going to be obsolete or unrepairable or unobtainable. Rather so it's kind of sad, but is what it is. I'm going to keep on keeping on and let you know what we figure out. Well would you look at that folks. The airbag module is now happy and when I go into the front control module our VIN number is the VIN number that belongs to this vehicle both original and current. How did we get there? That's a little bit of a longer story. I Mentioned I was going to call Keith over at L1 Auto Diagnostics now he's helped us in previous videos.
uh the most recent one was a Kia we did that had a bad PCM we had to send a two PCMS to him. he did a eom on them. uh went in there and you know changed the VIN and software and stuff from the original to the use one saving us you know over a grand uh with this here he has a program some non Chrysler program I don't know what it is I don't know if I'm at Liberty to say uh that he can back door into the front control module and tipm and Revere them per se. uh totally wipe them clean of the current Vin and configuration and then all we had to do was go back in with Ytech after he did that and run a vehicle configuration restore it wrote the VIN it configured the Fium with the or the front control module with this configuration for this VIN number in which case made the airbag module happy.
Now the Vins match the configuration with you know the number of airbags or maybe the number of sensors or whatever it was seeing that it wasn't seeing before. it's it's happy now. So uh, that is a service that he provides. If you want to do it remotely, you have to have a cardak 3 interface device.
That's what I have uh he also is able to do this uh on the bench. So if you have a can controlled vehicle with a control area network that runs a front control module and you need to put a used one in and it's a Chrysler He does have that service where you can send the front control module to him, he can Revere it uh for lack of a better term and then send it back. but then you have to have the ability to do a configuration restore on it to let it know what it is and you know what? Vin So uh that is the service he offers. Let's start this up real quick.
I'll I'll prove to you guys that it's fixed that the tack doesn't bounce anymore. Um, and then and then that's it. Then we're done. All right here we go.
Oh I think you know what? didn't I already show you this? Yeah, I did I'm an idiot but we can see the airbag lights out now. Uh, so that's good. uh and obviously the problem has been resolved. Oh and I did look into that can B bus the 4volt Delta on that is correct.
So from the uh uh, the can high and can low that we were looking at the the waveform on that is correct so we'll leave it at that. We did make the right call. I'm going to add a little bit of tape uh, some tested tape back to the bottom of that harness I do believe I have that little piece that we took off it uh that I've got to put on there and just kind of get this buttoned up. put the screws in it. Uh, customer needs a couple Keys programs so we'll get them done too. So uh, that's it folks. Thanks for watching inst see the Facebook You guys know where to find us. Just remember viewers, if I can do it, you can do it.
But we're going to need a little bit of help. So thanks for watching.
We'll still see new cars at car shows. As soon as they're old enough we pull all those electronics out and put the car on a standalone ECU
Ho Lee Chit this opened my eyes 👀. As you said no classic cars in the future. Talk about built in obsolescence. Then you have manufacturers wanting to have the power to turn your car off for one reason or another. Your world just gets worse. Hacking cars for ransoms is next.
i have an eeprom programmer that allows the data off a dead module to be read and then perfectly burned onto a used good module, effectively cloning the original without going through any manufacturer's rigmarole. old cars will live!
This is why all the software needs to be open source, and available to everyone. And why I hate having to buy subs and keys for issues, you pay all that money and then it still doesnt fix the problem. I had an 09 Ford that at first i thought had a security module issue, ford doesnt support these things after 8 years, they had no clue. Its a really bad way to operate as a maker of a major investment of a vehicle.
Wow…..what a PITA! Great Job Eric
The complexity in today's vehicles is crazy. I'm kinda glad I'm retiring soon…
We will always have classic car shows if you can even find a modern vehicle that is worth the trouble to restore who in the world would want to restore one anyway because when you buy them from the factory they come to you as junk already but you can always rip that crap out of the car and replace it with aftermarket Holley and others are doing wonders Making electronic fuel injection stuff that actually works and everything else vintage air you can rip out all of the factory crap and replace it with vintage air so they will always be a way to have restored classic vehicles. To tell you the truth car owners and mechanics need to file a court action against the manufactures just like the farmers did with John Deere to give them the right to work on their own equipment instead of John Deere having the monopoly
Great hat brah😎
The sad part is todays customers don't know what is in store for them. The cost that is gonna be passed down to repair these engineering marvels.
Mr above and beyond, Eric O is the man.
The garage I use won’t mess with PCM’s any longer. They also won’t send one out because of numerous issues with rebuilders. Any PCM issues and you’re off to the dealer.
Now I am scared to upgrade my vehicles unless I buy new and keep upgrading before the warranty runs out. This sucks. this also means you need to be near a good service center, something EVs lack for most rural areas. I think they used to have to keep parts in stock for 10 years, but that may have went out the window. It's killin us DIYers.
Fantastic diagnosis
A joy to watch Eric, you certainly earn your crust $. 😃👍
Good one Eric never give up.
"I made a mistake and bought a jeep!" Hilarious video on YT: "I Made A Mistake I Bought A Lemon Jeep song by Teggy – Jeep Grand Cherokee, what a lemon!"
It looks like points and carbureted cars are the way to go as I own a 65 Mustang and I would never put a newer crappy engine or drivetrain in it like so many dumb people do!!!!!!!
Great video as always Mr O.
Oh how I miss the good old days of repairing vehicles with a set of basic hand tools. Technology is wonderful on one hand but a pain in the arse on the other.
It's great to have friends in the community that help each other. Well done Eric and Keith. Keep it up my friends.
How many hours of labor was that Jeep in total
Can not believe you understand all programming for all the different auto manufacturers
Amazing
Wow! It was amazing that you were able to fix that. If they had brought it to a dealer I'm sure they wouldn't have been able to do it. You were the last resort for that customer !
Love and help from others makes it all work and worthwhile! I love your detailed diagnostics videos Eric, keep em coming.
Love the concept and most of all the components. Fit anywhere axles, open belt drive motors, and the open source VESC have unlimited possibilities.
Their way of making us change and do what they want. So sad. ❤❤❤❤
Hi Eric. What I think I understand with Chrysler . Their is no hard meat on those cam lobes to wear out like that. Keith at L1 Automotive did a video on the costs using Chrysler tec information. Called don’t buy a Chrysler.
You know I hate taking my vehicle with dealers. They take forever to give back to you.
I see they love screwing mechanics. Gotta buy their software, that's b*******Of course, they want everybody to take their vehicles of dealerships. You get it worked on.
Yay customer happy, jeep lives another day. its good there are tech folks out there that know about these stupid problems.
My question is this, do you recommend applying any dielectric grease or anti corrosion products to the Harness/pins before you reinstall ?
This man is a national treasure and needs to be protected at all costs.
Sitting here snowed in (8" in 24 hrs) watching you troubleshoot & repair a problem that is WAY out of a shadetree wrench turners wheelhouse (such as myself) is impressive. Don't laugh, 8" to us down here in the south is like 3' to y'all up there, anyways, (wish I had a snow cat, lol) just thought I'd let you know that I highly enjoy your vids and I'm equally impressed that theres a burgioning aftermarket of Poindexters (no offense, I'm using it in a very positive sense) that can keep up with the ever changing tides of technology. Carry On.
I think this video again broke the "If I can you can" theme. Wow what a diag and fix. You are the best of the best.
Excellent diagnostics there is no replacement for experience.
Congratulation on a job that would more than likely be sent to the junk yard. I just know i would not have one of the so called Chrysler products….
Well done, Mr O. Betcha other techs would have shrugged their shoulders and given up.
Knowledge, experience, smarts, tools–all countand in the end, persistence is sometimes the key to success. Where would we be without Jeeps!
Whats up the the other Jeep? You working on cars without us?
Why is chrysler so proud of their stuff? It is consistently the most expensive vin to key through nastd i deal with.
Eric I truly appreciate your diagnostics skills and your ability to say hey I need help. If all mechanics worked in this manner the auto repair industry would be a much better field these days
Well done!
In my line of work, us techs had phone numbers of other techs with other companies and we shared information and helped one another….even if the company didn’t like it. Our philosophy was, it’s fixed, customer is happy, invoice paid, money made.
What's the possibility of that module and battery come from the same donor vehicle?
Access to people with the particular knowledge needed is nice. I’m sure you’re right. Electronics will be the death of classic cars in 20 years. Or maybe the kit makers will be selling dumbed down systems to operate current vehicles in the future.
Always a win–where wins are possible. South Main AR comes through.
Nice job!
wow, planned obsolescence at it's finest there. A 2009 and you can't even get certain new parts.
Sadly I think your right about the electronics killing the classic car
I really enjoy your diagnostic videos. While I also watch those from Bernie Thompson, I find it easier to understand yours.
As I've said before, Jeeps are crap.
Excellent video.
Nothing but an ICE powered computer these days !!
Looks like you have been busy Eric. YIKES!
Need that right to repair legistation. You paid for your car in full, but you never really own it.
Who needs a speedometer anyway? Nobody does the speed limit. When somebody passes you just follow them. I'd like to now just how much getting the tach and speedo going in this vid cost. A grand? Modern vehicles are just shitboxes.
What crap that you have to pay Chrysler for a software update to fix their problem.
Stellantis is the only company that makes you pay for data. What a bunch of scumbags. I am a firm advocate for right to repair and companies like Stellantis and John Deere can go take a flying leap.I will never buy anything made from Stellantis Aside from the fact that they are scumbags, they make total garbage.
Nice video and diagnosis. Keith was definitely my first thought about fixing that module. Guys like him will be the future in keeping cars going that reached their obsolete date by the OEM.
extensive hi-tech electronics goes obsolete rapidly… unobtanium to the nth degree. Salvage yards are more important than ever….
I sure hope this right to repair fight going on will stop a lot of this BS on programming. Thier isn't any reason these modules couldn't be plug and play except that they are a money maker for the manufacturers and dealers. Also, there "security" reasoning is total hog wash. Vehicles are still being stolen even with all their so-called security protection.
G'day, Eric! Yes! It made a lot of sense! Enjoyed the video! (tach & speedometer cut out – and, repair!!) Great job! The the way… This video was re-virginizing! (refreshing) Lol! 🤣Thank you!
Cheers! 🛠❤😊
P.S. Humorously!! What do computer chips eat for dessert? Microchips, and ice cream! Lol!!
So where’s the Hemi videos if you got a parking lot and garage full of tear down rebuilds bro 😂
(not saying that you needed this here) If you had to reuse the old module I will bet someone like Northridgefix could repin/repair the crusty unit. That guy is your equivalent in the busted circuit board world.
Parts Guy: Green connectors is always is a sign of being good right? that is what he would say followed by I've been doing this for 80 years green is Definity good to go.
If it was just the one pin causing the problem, couldn't you jumper it out after getting permission from the owner?
🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉😅😅😅😅😅😅
Wow, pretty darn cool. Thank you Eric.
sometimes we all need a lil bit of help………..
Morning Eric hope you are staying warm😅
If it's obsolete, it's a good thing there's plenty of these Heeps in the junkyard.
😊👍🏻
Could you have tried cleaning the pins on the original module with some deoxit first before condeming it ? Or did i miss something ?
One point that I didn't think about is the classic car shows of the future. Instead of driving the cars there they have to be trailered?
Thank you Eric. I keep learning so much from your videos. Terrific job!
Another impressive diagnosis and repair, Eric! Well done!!!!
The comment about restoring old cars in the future is dead on.
The last generation of Ford Thunderbird. It has a module that is unsupported.
When it goes your done. Being a limited run vehicle, there are limited modules.
Got to love this disposable society we live in.
"We got the tools, and we got the talent!" (apologies to Ghostbusters)
great job
You may be able to go full Russian on that bad crusty module for future customers.
As the retired old oldtimer who "fixes" cars virtually nowadays, thinking about dipping my toes into the electronic "repair/diag" end of the business. Way to go Eric, nice job, successfully tilting at the evil gremlins that circle the 21st century things formerly known as "personal" transportation (fixable by the owners or shops). regards, daniel…
If the "only" issue was crusty connectors, another solution could have been to replace the connector on the original module with the one from the replacement module.
Please educate me…Since you've been a mechanic for the past 200 years, and me not being a "jeep guy"…other than driving one while I was in the Army….Has jeep ever made an engine that will live to 300k miles?
Keith Defazio is like the Tron of control modules he's at a whole different level
At th end of day who owns your car. This is bull pardon th french. No more spares sorry buy a new car but not a jeep.and th EV will be even better not.
You duh man!
Your are the Jeep Whisperer….Your tech skills are NASA grade….Love the Video
It sucks that it cost so much to reprogram a $20 junkyard module but I guess it's still almost half of what the a new one would have cost.
Eric, planned obsolescence just like our cellphones'.
In episode One he says "I'm not very good at this sort of thing". I knew it was a setup. Eric always knows.
Yet another reason why my 64 F100 is my summer driver!:) one wire HEI and one wire alternator. That hemi cam / lifter issue is quite the mess for owners. My brother just redid cam / lifter job on his son-in-laws 2015 ram. What a project! So close to being mechanically totaled. The worst was the UAW strike which delayed parts for three months! How do you bill that out? Thanks for the great videos and sharing your diagnostic skills!😊
I'll stick with my old ass cars lol
Maybe it's time to harvest modules for future use 🤔
It's sad when you have to spend more on programming the part than you did on the part and physical repair. 😢
You are 100% correct. Even folks not in the rust belt will be SOL when (not if) the manufacturer stops supporting the overcomplicated electronics crap. I'm an EE and have done electronics and electromechanical repairs my whole life so I'm not against electronics, give me electronic ignition over points all day long. Node locked modules that require special tools to reprogram are bad enough, making them so they can't be reprogrammed is criminal.
For most folks a car is the second largest purchase they will ever make with their house being number one. Imagine if houses worked like cars. Your fridge dies but is node locked to your house. The only fridge that will work with your house is no longer supported and so you find a used one, but you can't program it to work with your house without knowing the guy with the special software to reset (hack) your fridge and then you have to pay $150 to access the house builder's website to program the used, reset, fridge just to get it to work. Nobody would put up with this with their house, but we bend over and take it when it comes to cars. Why?
Another great job and a big thank you shout out to Keith @L1Training. I gave Keith a 'Subscribe '
It's not what you know it's who you know, and it's good to friends with them.
Nice job have a great Non crusty day God Bless you and the family and Happy New Year. Wish you all the best.
Potentially we could see a new industry evolve from this problem. Nothing goes obsolete faster than electronic tech. The laptop you buy today is outdated within a few months.Automotive manufactures are relying more an more on computers to run their vehicles. I believe they are only required to support these systems for about 5 years from the date of manufacture. That means it could be a challenge to source electronic parts for anything older than a 2018 model. Even manufactures like Hyundai and Kia which have a full 5 year warranty will only warranty the electronic dash modules for 36 months. This means that there is a rapidly growing need to be able to reprogram used electronic parts.
Nice work man! Chrysler can be such an a-hole.
Excellent as ever
