In this video we have a look at a customers 2012 Chevy Colorado that has had the parts cannon unloaded at with an attempt to fix the blower motor. Now it's my turn to see if we can figure out the real problem.

What's a day at SMA without a Chevrolet 2012 it's a Colorado uh SE this plain janer. it's got the big two something in here. what's that say 29 2900 cc's of Chevy Thunder no HVAC blower and the instrument cluster screwed up so uh, normal instrument cluster Shenanigans going on. You know fuel gauge doesn't work.

spomer doesn't work your typical uh General Motors cluster so that's not a big deal that we just need to send that out to United Radio get it fixed the blower motor the lady tells me and I quote I had it at another shop. uh they couldn't fix it, took it to another guy I don't know if it was a shop or not just another guy. uh he unloaded the parts cannon on it and then um, you know, didn't didn't work. So so that's where we're at.

I did I did take a peek under the dash. looks like new blower motor, a new resistor and I assume they probably put a heater you know, heater control switch in it and then collected their money and left. Uh, it's up to us to give it a give it a good old College Try here and see if we can figure out what's going on like I say she's a strip down model with a stick shift. uh no automatic HVAC looks like a pretty plain Jane should be a groundside switched um blow resistor.

So let's go have a look and see what's going on. So I grabbed this a power prob cuz I think we're going to need a power or ground source to do some verification. So let me show you. uh right now so the key is on I've got the key on blur switches on high.

nothing you know? see an old cable Opera one but nothing happen so we'll leave it up on full blast. We'll look under here. Get over here, grab our light so you guys can see and we can see the brand new motor. It's got the new motor hey we gave it the Ferell didn't work.

Uh, you come over here, move our light again and you can see the brand new resistor from none other than Banh Halen Oh, that's a Dorman symbol? Never mind. Okay, so it's got a new resistor and a new uh motor. Let's look and uh, let me set you guys up and we'll do some testing here. I got you propped up on the floor so well looks like somebody's cut into the cut in that black wire there.

one of these wires should have power and then one of them I believe will be pulled the ground via the resistor. Uh so let's just check for Grins and Giggles nothing there. All right. Turn that off.

so we've got 13.8 volts. I've got a battery tender on it cuz the battery's junk of course. All right. So let's see just for poop and laughter.

So our orange wires are hot or black exra ground here. Let's just see if our blower motor works we're going to put some power to it. Oops, this guy hit the wrong button. There we go.

Let's Let the Smoke Out All right, the blower motor has the ability to work so that's good. What we're missing here is we're missing our ground. We determine that Brown was power right? Is that what we determine? We did. So we just have power coming through the motor.
And we do. And when we ground it, that should work. So that that proves that theory. Okay, so what we need to do next.

Whoops! Sorry fellas, you guys Still good. Yeah, you can still see Pop bumped into you there. Unplug this little guy and let's see if our see if our resistor is bad. So how many speeds do we have up here? We got one through four, 1, two, 3, four, so four.

We should have four different ground signals here. We don't know on a diagram yet, but all four of these should become ground. Three of them should go through a resistor. One of them should not.

Okay, cuz your high speed's not going to go through it. So let's just check. One of these should have ground at this point if the switch is any good. Okay, so this must be our the orange must be our highspeed wire because we have voltage on that now.

You did it. Why is that running full speed all of a sudden? this thing's fixed. Ain't that some sugar? Yep, so this is speed number two. That's funny.

That's speed number number. That's speed number three. That's speed number four. Oh good.

It's broke again. Okay, so that's kind of weird. It temporarily fixed itself I'm not going to apply ground to that again because we have a bad ground. Okay, so I'm going to try to make sense of this for you.

Um, so all I did cuz right now we have power going into the motor, out of the motor and over here to the resistor connector and it's on this orange wire. Let me I tell you what. Let me get a diagram here. so I can tell you which speed is which.

But all of a sudden I grounded it. Which is fine. It's it's it's okay to do I don't want to do it again because if we have a crappy ground or a crappy connection somewhere by me grounding this, it temporarily welded itself or did something to, uh, remedy itself there there momentarily. Yep.

Okay, so I'm changing the switches. Okay, so yellow is speed one. We know that speed four Brown is or blue. Here is speed three and that speed two.

Okay, but none of them are actually pulling to ground. You can see, we got you know, 0.2 volts. but we don't have a green light on here. You have to understand how the Power Probe 4 Works before you can, uh, put any faith in the LEDs Um, but we have no ground.

let me get a diagram and show you guys what's up This a laptop to stick right in here in the truck. It's going to be under air conditioning on on Mitchell So that's the compressor circuit so we don't need that manual. AC This is what we need. There's our blower motor.

Okay, so let's just go here. from the blower motor down and what do we have? We've got a 30 amp fuse that we know works because we have power on this brown wire at the motor. Now this orange wire should go to a resistor and it does okay right? So let's look at that. We've already determined that the Orange is highp speed and it is okay.
so let's just go over here. We've already made a guess out of all of this. So what happens is when we turn this switch on, it goes from uh, number one to two to three to four that that's at least how they have it labeled. You know over here on the dash 1, 2, 3, four So or or low Medium 1, medium, two high.

So when we turn this switch from this position to position number one, you follow this back goes to this black wire which goes down which goes to this ground. Whoops Dang it. I Don't like using this screen. it goes to G106.

All right And then that's all that happen. So that ground comes into this switch. When you change it, It goes from position one to two to three and then to high. It just pulls each one of these to ground.

Okay, so position one should be the yellow wire going to ground which I'll click This clicked into number one. Now this yellow wire should have some sort of ground signal on it which we can see. It pulls down but it doesn't pull down to ground to the point it can carry current. If I was showing you with a test light, the test light would not light up here and I can probably get a test light and prove that to you.

Uh, let's see. position number two should be this tan wire. We can go in the tan wire right now. We see that we don't have anything until we click it on position number two.

and now we check the tan wire. We should have some sort of ghost voltage here and we do. okay. and then if we have this plugged in what we would see, um we'd have some voltage feedback on these grounds cuz it's not going to ground.

Okay and then number three according to the diagram should be the blue wire just inter. Interesting how it start working there for us momentarily and there we are. So what One thing that we do know is that when we are switch selector up here is good. I mean we're we're putting some sort of voltage through it.

Um we need to see I'll show you what we need to see. We need to see. We need to see if this ground is any good. This ground wire that comes out here that goes down that goes to G16 right side of engine compartment.

it says uh JX 106 Oh, it's probably one of those Junction blocks that um that General Motors likes to use I bet that's what it is and it shows. It's not complete. It's not a complete diagram. see how.

it's got the dots around it so that's not all the wires that run to it sends ground to a couple other things. evap, temp sensor. uh, what we can do. we can scroll back up here, we'll close this and we'll go to ground distribution.

They're enough. About a quarter here and we will find G106. That's 107. Pass it.

G105 We're going to be looking for a junction I'm sure. Yeah, here we go. G106 right there. Wow.

Uh, so this grounds a lot of stuff with passenger power seat which it doesn't have. It doesn't have a trailer uh, tow package on this one. It doesn't have a driver's side seat. It's two wheel drive so it doesn't have this wire.
It does have this one though. HVAC control module. Uh, it's a twodo so we don't have a rear window switch. We don't have power windows all right.

so we're down to one wire and then this continues on. diagram 3 of three at Junction B Junction B And then it has this wire. this other wire that comes out that feeds all of all of these grounds. So so we should be looking for junction JX 106 that only theoretically should only have a couple wires coming out of it and may maybe this blunt cut wire.

Maybe two two wires for sure, one for the HVAC and one that goes and feeds all the other crap. and then maybe a blunt cut wire. So let's find. Well, what's it say It says right side of engine compartment left, oh right side of engine compartment behind Air cleaner.

That's really specific. Let's go have a lookie there. Um, before we do that, what we'll do. Give it the old feeler here.

we'll plug this baby back up, plug it up. there we go. and then I'm going to leave this thing on full blast. We want, we want full current, and then let's go find this G106 that's behind the Air cleaner and just see if it's bad right there.

If if we test it there and it's good, the thing, what we should do is pull out the H back and see you know where we've lost ground. But it's easier to start at something that's hopefully easy to get to. Finding this is probably easier than pulling that out in my opinion. Set that there set this here.

There's the Air filter G106 behind Air Cleaner. It says let me uh, things are a little snug in my shop here. Walk around here I me to need to be taking on the live tour you six? Well, that's the air filter. Oh wait a minute.

Don't mean to give you guys where to go. What's this? What's that down there? I See little box down there. Oh, there's a couple black wires. Let's pull the air cleaner out of there folks.

Looks like oops, tell you what. Let's um, let's unhook our battery tender here. Let's move that back here. let's hook it back up so our battery doesn't die everything.

I Work on as a junk battery. They last about 30 seconds with the key on. All right, we'll turn that back on. Got our power prober? Let me just have a closer look I'm pretty sure.

Yeah, that's A. That's definitely the top of a junction 13. Let me get a socket and a ratchet or an impact. We're going to unhook the air tube here.

This is from the air pump. Uh, the keys on. I Don't want to unplug the mass air flow cuz it doesn't have an engine light. so we'll just unscrew this clamp here, unbolt it, and just kind of set it to the side.

There's that one. There's that one. A roll cart here. so there's those bolts that hold on the airb.

Oh did you guys hear that? I Heard the blower motor ramp up there briefly. We got to be careful. That's good news. That's good news cuz I I think I bumped this ground Conn I wonderoo get excited? we're close.
That's good cuz that means that means that we're probably right near the problem. but I don't want to accidentally fix it by smacking smacking into that thing. Well, hopefully it doesn't set an engine right. inspections not Du till next mon I think so we're probably still okay.

We'll plug it in before we start it up. Might have a pending circuit code. There's our Junction looks like Factory tape so let's do this cuz I know I bump that sucker. let me move you.

shut this off so you guys can hear Let me see get you switched around here. So this is the this is G106 and I think they call with this JX 106 Hear that. Bingo Bango it's broke. The junction box is broken.

Well I'll be isn't that great. We got lucky. well we didn't get lucky. I Guess we got lucky in the sense of the problems right here.

We didn't Uh, we didn't get lucky in figuring out the problem because we use logic. Let me show you how we're going to fix this one this down here everybody can see. I Got some ring terminals I Shut key off I Think we have plenty enough wire here. You take this thing, throw it right in the trash.

We don't need it. There's only two wires and we're going to try to trigger as many people as we can with the corroded thumbnail. That'll get some of you. We're not going to do a proper crimp.

Okay, ready. Oh my gosh, people's keyboards are but ready to catch on fire. Let's see, we're going to use our crimp for non-insulated connectors. I'm pinch straighten that ring terminal out there.

Give her a second crimp here. Yeah, for some reason boy, you want to piss people off on the internet. Do this. If I could do this with a welder while soldering it and pouring I would It's so Spite And just so we can trip every trigger, we're going to do it with a torch and Straight Lead solder 98% pure lead, no flux because we're using flux core.

Watch this. There's some guy at home crying right now. Give that baby just a little drop right there. Oh man, we'll stick our eyelets in there.

We'll come right up here. gra our torque crunch. click, click am out of fluid. Oh on.

Earth Did that happen? I'm not out. It's just I got to go upstairs to get some so we're going to go old school. We're just going to smear some electric grease on here. We just want to keep it from croing.

We've crimped, we've soldered it, we've greased it, and then we tighten it with an impact that should have gotten just about everybody I can think of. I'm confident with the repair. so I see no need to really test it before we put things back together. So we're just going to slide this back back in.

Famous last words, right? we'll slide that in I'll get these bolts put back in here I'll find the torque specs on those, get them tightened up, and then uh, we'll see if everything works I Imagine it will. So this thing could have been fixed for no parts required. see I'm always the guy that loses on this cuz the other Shop's the one that collects all the money. They change all the parts, get paid for all their parts and their time.
and I mean I get paid for my time. But let's be honest, this was a pretty easy fix. Elementary style: Drop our air cleaner in there. see let bingo, bingo, turn that back on.

Let's go inside, see if it works. Hey, look at that. Yeah, come over. We shut that.

We don't need that. There's speed one. Perfect. It works.

Too bad we didn't have all the factory stuff. Could put it all back cuz well. now we've got a dorant resistor and a uni motor motor. So I guess we'll have to find a place to shove these so somebody doesn't step on them.

but that's it folks. Easy fix, piece of cake. Well, that's it on this one. folks.

Going to take outside? put her in the lineup. Stick shift and rolly pulley. Windows While it doesn't get any better than this, push button locks and an old school style heater system and uh, everything works good. We got pretty fortunate to find that the ground was actually broken right where it terminates.

That's a good day, especially when you bump it with the uh, airbox and hear the motor kick on. That's an even better day. Uh, because that means we're not chasing a broken wire from the switch out. We knew it was good from here to the switch it was from the switch out.

That was questionable and we knew that because we looked at the wiring diagram and we understood how the system worked and that's what's super important. I mean new blower motor, new resistor still doesn't work and it's probably because whoever looked at it just didn't understand how the system works And that's what I would encourage you guys to do is before you do any testing or before you change any parts. you can't really do it unless a you can prove it's bad and B you understand how it works. If you don't know how it works, you can't test it.

That's just a matter of fact. I'm not trying to belittle anybody or anything, but that's just a matter of fact. you have access and at least in the US OFA you have access to the same service data. I Do you have access to OEM service info that's very affordable like I think for GM I think it's 35 bucks for 3 days.

something like that factory dealer level service info um, you got your mitual DIY your all data DIY There's so many options to get service info for today's vehicles in the US outside the US where there's not a right to repair act I don't really know and uh, that's it. So get the service info Theory and operation. how's the system work? Print out your diagram, write down on your diagram like okay, this is these are the five wires I'm going to test. Here's what I expect to see: um, you know for example, like we had what three resistors down there and one bypass wire for highp Speed We'll say on those three resistors wires on speed one wire color, you know, whatever it was, yellow should pull the ground, you know, number two, you know, tan, number three, blue, whatever the wire color was, and number four orange.
those wires should pull the ground and look at the circuit design. Not only do they pull the ground, but can they carry current and don't go testing stuff with a you know High a test light? Unless you know how the circuit design works, you know what I mean Uh so this for example is a 20 amp circuit. Where does that current go through to find ground and you know? can I can I put my test light here without sending some wires up and smoke? Uh, test light's a pretty dang safe tool on cars. Some people will say you know, uh I know the guy that that worked on this and and for example he might say well I don't I don't work on this new fangled electronic stuff I'm here to tell you that this is the same system that was in a car in 1950 or any car that has a variable speed blower that uses a standard resistor so 19506 7s 80s.

So if you only work on 1970s cars, well guess what, buddy, That's the same setup down there. Um, groundside switch resistor on a blower motor. Pretty simple stuff. Anyhow, why don't you guys keep it simple with your comment questions, comments, concern, see and stay the Facebook You know where to find us by now and just remember viewers, if I can do it, you can do it.

Thanks for watching.

This is such a simple circuit, does nobody actually diagnose a problem before replacing parts anymore?
Information is so important, even for something this simple.

Can you explain how the Chrylser version of this system burns up the switch? Burnt switches have been a common Chrysler issue since 1995-ish?!? It seems to me that the motor is wired with 12ga up to the resistor, but from the resistor 14ga is used to the switch and then to ground. Using smaller wire for a longer run doesn't seem right to me and could be the cause of overheating? Or is it the small contact area on the switch/connector? I've had three Chrysler products with this issue: 2 Jeeps (XJ and a TJ) and a Dodge Durango.

Trying to find a short in the tail and clearance lights on a 2011 Thor motor home on an E350 chassis without a diagram is impossible, especially when it's not popping the fuse under the hood, but the one under the dash. Turned out a Thor technician didn't crimp a but connector to the clearance lights correctly and the wire finally came out and shorted 90% to ground. So it blew the 15A under the dash, But not the 20A under the hood. Paid good money to get the diagrams to trace it out. Replaced all the butt joints with bare butt connectors, crimped and soldered as well as marine heat shrink to seal the deal.

All good but still dim try another bulb still dim. It took me a while to find it. The headlight plug was faulty . The wires come in from the side onto female blade connectors. Hi Lo and earth. They hadn't bared the cables before crimping them so only the ends of the cables were just touching and no more. Fitted 2 new plugs and all was good. Warranty claim. nice bright headlights.

The vehicle owners have to be here and work alongside me getting their hands dirty while we try to sort out whatever issue besets their vehicle. My suggestion to them all is if they can't bring vehicle here, and thus have to go to some other shop, ask the shop owner if they can fix the problem. If answer is yes, then advise the shop owner that if they fit anything to the vehicle and it does NOT fix the issue, then they, the vehicle owner, is not going to pay for the parts or the labour to install it. If the shop owner objects to that, and many will, remind them of the question I (the owner) asked, namely, can you fix the problem? I am not going to pay for stuff that doesn't fix the problem. That way you don't pay for the parts cannon or any other wild guesses. In any industry or profession, the skill is being able to diagnose the problem, as Eric, Pine Hollow Diagnostic, Diagnose Dan, Watch Wes Work and several others can and do do. Agreed there are times when one of two problems can cause the issue, like a sensor in the distributor (old school) or the coil could be causing the misfire in older waste spark ignition systems. The cost of working out which is the cause is more than replacing both units so replacing both units is more sensible, and cost effective. But this is the exception rather than the rule. So my suggestion to all is, as mentioned above, if they say they can fix it, pay for the diagnostics and then only pay for the parts and labour that actually fix it. Those who scream that is unfair, take the vehicle and walk away before the work starts and go and see those I mentioned who are genuine and don't throw the parts cannon at it. If Eric wanted to throw bait at key board warriors, I am adding to the fuel.

Good job, Eric! The only thing I would have done differently was to scrape the paint where the ring terminals attached to the fender. That way, you are not relying on the threads of the bolt to make the connection to ground. I loved your troubleshooting method. So many of us take grounds for granted, and you knew that it was the issue!

I had a Ram 1500 with no blower motor complaint. I pulled it into a bay with some obstructions near the passengers door. So when I got it parked before shutting it off I tilted the steering column up so I would have room to stick my head under the dash from the driver's side. When I tilted the wheel up the blower motor ran. Tilted it back down, blower motor off. Found out the ignition swich connections melted down. New switch and pigtail fixed both issues on the work order.

Mr. O, you always say " If I can do it, you can do it " but that's not the case. I believe everyone is born with a gift or ability. Some folks can draw, some can sing, some can run, etc. Some (like you and I) are very good at understanding how mechanical and electrical things work and therefore are very good at troubleshooting when things aren't going right. Eric the parts cannon is not limited to Automotive Industry, I see the same thing in the telecom industry. I've been working in that field for 30+yrs and I tell the younger and some older guys if you're not testing your guessing. Sooo many times a very simple fix turns into days of parts swap.

Before the internet existed or at least in it's current iteration there was a local shop owned by a Korean I worked for. When he grew up in Korea I believ it was mandatory after high school to serve two years in the military, I'm talking south Korea, he was taught mechanics, he worked on military type vehicles, basically your tools are bailing wire string and glue, he came here and opened a garage up the street from me. A guy who moved in a rental near me taught kung fu, he became friends with him and brought his vehicles there, one day he needed a car, I knew a guy selling a Plymouth Valiant with a slant six naturally, he bought the car beat the hell out of it and it needed an engine, he brought it to Me Parks who got him a used engine, Mr parks practiced slash and burn auto mechanics he learned in Korea, he basically cut everything out with a torch like they do when removing an engine at the junk yard, he torched the AC compressor and all the hoses with a torch and just left them there, I can only imagine if he were alive today and had the shop and a YouTube channel the comments he would get, unfortunately he was working on his house, he was on a ladder fell off and broke his neck.

  94. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Dave Filicicchia says:

Again Eric, great troubleshooting skills. I know it takes extra time, but it would have been interesting to see the actual failure of the ground junction block. Did the internal tab get fatigued and break away from the mounting screw tab, or was it corrosion? Failure mode would be interesting to see. Thanks.
