Customer Customer States Mechanic Fails Engine Transmission Gas Diesel off road race 4x4 street car daily driver scam dealership dealer technician how to

Hello everybody! Good day to you! Welcome back! Glad you guys are here. We are returning to the Uh 2007 Dodge Grand Caravan with a 3.8 liter V6 uh I Actually did not intend to do this job today because the filter was super far away. uh customer States replace transmission filter and refill food So I ended up ordering the filter clip kit. excuse me, it's a Carquest part number 85934 This was the only one out of any of the suppliers that had a filter, so I really hope it's the right one.

Uh, anyway, we're gonna go ahead and pop this pan off real quick and uh, pop the filter out, take a look at everything, and then get this unit installed now. Like I said I Wasn't intending on replacing this filter today because I didn't think it was going to be here today, but it arrived early. So uh I figure I can squeeze this thing in for the end of the day. That'll give us a jump on our chores for tomorrow morning because uh, we're doing some painting and I've got some of these walls done sort of ish.

We need to kind of buckle down and get organized tomorrow. This was sort of just me playing today, but Troy's out today. He'll be back tomorrow and when he gets here, we're gonna get the walls came. but that's a side quest.

Let's get back over here to Uh to our van again. let's put our filter down I need to grab a battery for my impact and we're gonna need the 10 mil the Deep Well which is all the way over here in this box. Yeah, this uh, cleaning, organizing slash restructuring business has me in a very heightened state of disarray. and I don't know where anything is I mean I do know where it is, but it's not organized and concentrated.

I'm working on it. But as you can see, I got to go to four different places just to take some bolts out of the transmission. How about that? So again, and by the way, this uh, this video is in fact a part two and the last video. We replaced the right front CV axle because the boot was torn and The Joint inside had suffered some damage from exposure to the elements.

If you want to go back and see that video, just go down and check the link inside this video subscription and it'll take you back in time. So what we're going to do here. So we've got a drain pan. It's pretty clean-ish We're gonna go ahead and pull all these bolts out, going around the perimeter, pry this cover or paying off.

Rather, it's it's glued on with silicone sealant for our TV seal. So we got a pry bar that thing off. We're going to spill all the fluid, hopefully not on the floor. Then we're going to pry the filter out, inspect it for chunks of metal, and then replace it with a new unit.

Let's get these ones on the back side here. two three. I'm gonna put this one. I'm gonna leave one in the side and we're gonna leave this one in the side.

That way, when we pry it loose, the whole thing doesn't just fall down and spill out all the fluid because that would not be okay. I'm going around on the back. three more to go, two more to go. All right.
So all the bolts are removed and loose pry bar this thing off. I might be able to get to it just like right in here. That's it. Good looking spot actually.

let's see if that's gonna work for us. I can't really get a purchase on. uh, on the pan. A lot of these.

you got to just Hammer something in there and it bends the pan. Then you gotta sort of Forge it and Hammer it back. I might bend the pan as it is. Um, there we go.

Yeah, a little bit of spillage there. got some on your face here. Let me wipe you down there. Get rid of that.

Okay, that's better now. I can go back in there with the gun and get those other two bolts out. Remove the entire unit. that one out.

That one I did spill on the car kind of a lot actually. Oh well. yeah. Warm transmission fluid.

Yummy. No, there's a bracket holding this up here. Hang on there we go. Okay Filter, you're up.

Wiggle that thing out. There's the O-ring seals the filter. It just kind of snaps in with these little pegs. see looking down in there.

I Can't really see much. Front side. That's okay, there's not a boatload of stuff in there. All right down here.

in the pan is sort of a different story and not really. pay no regards to gravity. Pay no regards to that debris over there. that stuff that fell into it when we pulled the pan.

But over here in the magnet, it's not horrible. it's definitely showing its age. and it's it's where. But we don't have chunks of metal in there, which is good.

We've just got slow wear over time. that's like this little pasty gel business so we can just wipe that stuff out, clean it off. I Think we're okay to just, uh, toss some new fluid in this and put a put a new filter in. Okay, so for this next section, we need to remove and get rid of all this old RTV sealant that's running around the perimeter of this pan.

So I'm going to go in there with a little ziz wheel grinder, an angle grinder, and I've got this polishing bit with these little fingers on here. The idea is these little fingers will grab a hold of that sealant and then fry it off of there. It's not as abrasive as some of the Sandpaper wheels, and uh, depending on the seal and tenant's condition, they can pull it off very easily. So we're going to start with this: Loud noises and be prepared for super high speed, lightning fast motion.

Good. Okay, that's uh, that's kind of killing my tool I think uh, the silicone sealant that our TV is a little bit too tough for uh, this type of wheel. So we're gonna get out the little sander Wheels Next Okay sanding pad shift change. We're gonna try this one next and see uh, see how this one goes.

These things just thread onto little base plate there. Yeah, beautifully shiny. That's nice. There we go.

It's been de-crustified I need to wipe it with a rag and get the little residual full tags there that are hanging off. Get rid of those guys and wipe out all the nasty inside. And then we can clean off the bottom of the trans and get this unit back installed. reinstalled, not back installed reinstalled words.
You know it's moments like this to make me happy that I bought the big can to break clean I'm gonna need it. Rents away all of our nasty crayons. Hey I'm not gonna be all super crazy with this. Just flash everywhere we're gonna go.

nice and easy. like I don't know this can's running out. It was half a can when we started. Yeah, it's gone no more.

That's it. I'm sorry I Couldn't help myself. Had to do it. You get all this branched out and then wiped down.

Then we'll get the filter on and some sealant and then we can refill the transmission. It's like panning for gold. We got in there. three chunks.

negatory. Nope. That magnet. Nice and rinsed off.

No chunks on that foreign. There we go. Let's give that a good wipe. We'll get all the stuff that the brake clean didn't rinse out.

Get rid all that nasty. One more wipe down with a cleaner towel in a moment. here. This towel is soiled disposable towel.

If you pick up like a cloth shot towel, it may already have degree in it. Like that you can reintroduce it into your clean system. It's not okay. Finalized wiping down.

Get in there. Get all the little nooks and crannies and crevices and cracks. Pull the magnet out and wipe that off and wipe down the spot where the magnet goes. Put it back where we found it.

Wipe it again. Very nice. That's shiny all right. Giving our valve body a clean, we've wiped down the ceiling surface.

I'm trying to get all that old trans fluid to run out of this so it doesn't contaminate the sealing surface. I'm about to let it drain for a while. If the fluid gets on the ceiling surface, then, uh, the sealant may not seal very well. So we're trying to get all that super clean here.

We'll let that thing drain, wipe down this area. Get that dry because that's where our filter is about to set. Coming in, it appears to be similar in size, shape, and dimension as the the unit we removed. Okay, here's the O-ring for the filter.

Let's slip that guy on. like. so we'll take some of this trans fluid right here, lubricate that O-ring like so and then put that thing in position. Get in there like so okay.

Filters on all right. So I'm here with a tube of Uh black RTV sealant. We're gonna go around and put some of the sealant on the perimeter of this pan while we're here and while we're doing a transmission service I Wanted to touch base on some questions that I got last time. I did a Tran service and I didn't do a filter change.

I did the Uh the fluid exchange with the transmission flush machine and everybody asked whenever I do that? why don't you change the filter and it's actually quite simple. Those are two separate operations. now. before you jump the gun and start banging away at the keyboard, let me explain.
See if I take this pan down and I spill, You know, four quarts of fluid out of it and then I change the filter. We now have some parts and some labor and some fluid. You know, four or five quarts. Okay, but the way that the fluid exchange system is set up is you do a 16 quart fluid exchange.

So 16 quarts is what goes in the machine. and with that 16 quarts, it's going to provide a complete fluid replacement. If I were to drop the pan and then change the filter, then connect the machine. what I would end up doing is I would have to refill the pan before I could operate the machine because the machine doesn't know what the level on the system is.

it just knows exactly what it took out and exactly how much to put back in based on exactly what it took out. So if the fluid level is not correct when you start, then the machine can't appropriately do what it's designed to do. So the point being is, if I were to do a filter and a fluid exchange with the machine, we're actually have to charge more labor because and more fluid. Actually, because I can't run the fluid exchange machine with just 12 ports.

If I did just 12 ports and I filled up four quarts in here and then I flush 12 through it, it would still have a diluted mixture. Because of that, four quarts. so four quarts would be diluted and that would actually negate the purpose of the machine because the machine is designed to give a 100 displacement or a 99 displacement of all the old fluid, which is often why those two jobs are not combined with each other. Additionally, when you do just the fluid exchanges, you shouldn't really have to do a filter because most folks could do the fluid exchanges, They do those uh before like there was a transmission problem or before you get into a really high mileage.

Zone if you guys notice a lot of them I mean I know I Did some that have like 400 000 miles on them, but some of them many of them are down in the you know, 50, 60, 70, 000 mile range. So we can do it with Uh with the fluid exchange and the filter, but it has to be treated like two separate operations. First operation is pull the pan, change the filter, fill it back up, set the level, then the second operation is to connect the machine, and then do an exchange. So either way there's going to be some waste and it's It's almost not necessary to do both at the same time.

Now, some people don't like the Uh the fluid exchange machine and they just prefer this method. and some people, uh, don't feel that the fluid filters are you should be serviced. you know, at Uh at less than like quarter million mile intervals or unless there's a problem or if you take it off for inspection so you can get away without servicing that filter because in most cases, it's actually like a screen rather than um, you know, like an oil filter. For example, I'm aware this is ugly, but it'll get smashed.
It's fine, so I kind of hope that answers the question. Um, maybe it does. Maybe it doesn't but it is. two separate jobs if you want to do it.

two separate jobs. I've got no problem doing it that way. but I just don't see the need. It's almost like Overkill it's like service to Overkill because what that'll do is that'll take a 300 fluid service and turn it into 550 and at 550 bucks or whatever I just don't see the justification there.

So I hope that makes sense. It made sense to me. Anyway, let's get this thing back over to the truck and we'll get the pan back on. fluid refilled.

Okay, we're gonna have to move kind of quick to get this in position because we still have a lot of drips going on on the back ceiling surface here. see how that and I can't allow that, uh, trans fluid to touch that surface. so we've basically got to get it, get it right, and then plop this thing right in right now immediately. That way the sealant makes contacts before the the oil can run down.

Are we ready? Here we go. and I Hope I got it because that's it. It's on show. Let's get I'm keeping upward pressure on it by the way, not letting it, not letting it move or come down or anything like that.

Okay, that's two bolts and I'm gonna tighten those right now. There we go. Another Okay, good. so we'll run around, get the recipes, bolt in I Think everybody's nice and lined up.

This is. this is good. Let's get these bolts bolted back on. I'm gonna start with the rear ones that way.

I Can uh, quick planting Force at the leaking spot. the spot that Mike's to leak, spread that sealant out there. we go. We'll let her down.

Fill her up one more right here. That one, a couple up front and two or three more on the other side. And no, I Realize I'm not going in like a star pattern. It's not going to warp this pin because that surface is so flat and the torque is so low so it's fine.

And the nut for that bracket I shall not forget that quick check. By the way, this is all trigger control. I'm not I'm not sending this thing like full send and letting it break it off. All right, we're good.

Cool beans. Let this thing down. Get it refilled. All right.

Bye. All right. we've made our way back under the hood. Pull this dipstick out and get this unit refilled.

Should only take but about four quarts or so. All right, let's hop into the cabinet see what I got in inventory land. Uh, one thing I need is some transmission conditioner. They're getting this.

This thing's high mileage we're getting. duh. we're gonna put this in there. it's not on the bill and I didn't charge him for it.

but uh, they're gonna get it because it's good stuff and because it is good stuff. I Can part ways with it. It's fine with me. Pop Energy Top: Oh my little, where's my funnel I can't do a pouring things into that little hole that's just not gonna fit all right.
Funnel coming in, conditioner going in, let you hang out for a while. Let's go get some flu Judo Chop Trans fluid coming in. This is 16 quarts but again, we're not using 16. we only need four.

Come here back in the box. Go! Oh spillage. This must be done very carefully. Put on, dump it all out.

We're gonna eyeball our four quarts and we'll check it. That's about one a two. You gotta have a good funnel for this. We're at about that's about four.

Who knew I spilled some? Not okay I Got it? Okay, Funnel is done funneling. Let's let that dipstick tube settle and we'll do a preliminary, uh, fluid level check. Let's see what we get. Give it a wipe.

Yeah, there's a lot in the tube, but I think we're around here somewhere? Let's start it, let it run and then we'll come back. recheck it. Beginning engine restocking sequence now. no worries, it's just the engine.

it makes that sound lifters. It's got some valve train noise going on in there. All right. So at cold we're at the top of the second Dot and we flip this around and check it again.

Yeah, we need to wait a little while there's too much fluid up here. it's going to. uh I'm gonna mess up our readings all right. Finalize Recheck: It's been about five minutes.

that's plenty for that tube to drain and we are right smack dab in the middle of the cool mark. I Think it could go for maybe like one more quart and we're good to go here. So let's get that last cord in or maybe half a quart. We'll do a couple more rechecks than I Think at this point, this video is about good to go.

This operation is good to go. I'm good to go. It's in today. so I'm gonna go ahead and close this one out.

I Now we're here all the way to the end. I'm going to assume that you in fact like this video and I would only ask of you that if my assumption isn't fat, correct for you to communicate that to me by tapping that like button down below. Do not forget to drop a comment or two in the comment section and most importantly, powering down. Have yourselves a fantastic day! See you guys later in the video.

End of: Doge in the transmission job in the transmission. See that that was a double entender. Get it because we were transmitting about a transmission? All right, let's get this thing clear of the rack. We're gonna go ahead and back it on out.

This operation is complete and successful. Left arm's not so, therefore it is successful. Oh I'm going the wrong way I'm done. It is successfully complete.

Got that solved? Sorry I Got my brain Cranium confused I got a asymmetric lift on that side and a symmetric on this side. Oopsie. So anyway guys, this thing's good to go. Fluid level is topped off.
operation complete restarting Z Engine checking for oil pressure. Man that came up quick. Okay, all right, we're good to go here guys. let's get this thing backed out.

I'm gonna get it parked backing out the auto parking. Oh by the way, did I mention that we are not gonna do the engine mounts on this thing? No engine mounts. not gonna happen. We wanted to do the other stuff instead, so maybe later.

maybe not. I Hope we do because this thing really needs them all. Four of them are broken, but we can save that one for next time. See you guys later.

Thanks again for watching. Oh no, the window doesn't go up. Oh come on, no way. What have I done?.

I completely understand and agree with you regarding fluid and filter service vs full system flush. I prefer flush vs filter service myself, more bang for your buck, plus most run a cleaner beforehand, at least we do where I work. Enjoyed the video as always. Great work Ray.👍👍

I have a parts cleaner just like yours, I use a water based cleaner to clean things and have a debris filter clamped onto the drain. I drain the fluid through the filter and get many months of use of the fluid. I don't know how much you spend on brake clean ( I buy it in gallons and use a refillable pressure sprayer) but I think it would save you a lot of money and the only cost would be to us not seeing you using brake clean and throwing the can across the shop. I have 60 years in the business and know that the margin for profit is slim and every penny counts. Just sayin.

  52. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Scott Philippi says:

Get parts wash station with a filter so you can recycle the fluid. You will save money in the long run.

  54. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Jonny Valiant says:

You need a jug of mineral spirits and a brush. Save you money on brake clean cuz that shits liquid gold.

    Why not test drive?

  56. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars jesse wynne says:

I’m pretty surprised these vans need to have transmission drain/fills every 30-60k miles
Or they go out (self destruct) cuz they do hold a lot of AT fluid.
Compared to other vans that have small pans.

  57. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars pcspecialistpdx says:

you broke the window! Bad mechanic!

  58. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Robert Bell says:

I have a 2004 caravan and the filters always came with the pan gasket. 293K+ miles and it sounds like new. Trans slips when it's cold started on a cold day, like 40 or lower. Once it warms up and gets going it's fine though.

  59. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Hvguy says:

Also fun fact. Most Mercedes have drain bolts on the torque converter so you can drain everything when you do a filter and just fill it with 9qts 💯

  60. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Hvguy says:

I use those same bristle discs for cleaning RTV and gasket material. They've got white green yellow and purple discs which are different grit for aluminum or steel etc.

Only buy 3m brand discs. The Chinese garbage just break apart and melt plastic to the part 😹

  61. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Jason Doerksen says:

Honest question. My odyssey has 228,000 miles. Just rebuilt the engine. Should I do a trans fluid flush or pull the Trans and change filter too?

  62. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Roger Siples says:

Using RTV to seal a transmission pan always makes me afraid of some getting inside the transmission. You really have to be careful. Great job.

Ray you seem to get more than your share of derelict vehicles, people that can't afford to maintain their vehicles properly. How do you upgrade your customer base to people with nicer vehicles that can afford the maintenance their vehicles require?

  68. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars David Sabourin says:

Why the RTV? They don’t make gaskets for that pan? I have done the same thing when I couldn’t find a gasket.
I like the cork gaskets myself. Maybe because I’m older then dirt 😊

Ahhh this Van !! 2007 Dodge Grand CaraVan ..

    I Luv this ol Moma/Rugrat Carrier ..

    Yes it Was my Ex Wife's Main Vehicle 2 transport of our Combined Kiddie carrier ( we had kids from separate Ex-spouse's ) for a bit .. @ 1st she was against it , Being So LARGE .. But my argument 2 her was ;

She Had a 1979 Ford ThunderBird & that Werent no Little Car 😆

She lamented but after driving it around & me showing just HOW Easy it was to Parallel park , she was sold. Mostly because you can see through the many windows

Its 3.8 ltr. V6 had plenty of power & she was hooked.

@ the time , We were pinching pennies to get by as we had been saving to buy a home.

We had plenty of good times in it ..

However Never had any troubles with it Mechanically.

I changed the fluids regularly myself & just out of good measure changed out the coils & Spark plug wires p
every 30k .. When we traded it in , it was still purring smooth

    @ 180k !!

Nev e r had a valve clickity clackity sounds. Not even during a cold start up .

Never burned oil .. It did have a CV-Joint problem that I changed myself as well as my doing full 4 wheell brake jobs myself..

Yes I DO LOVE BERRYMEN CHEMTOOL
BRAKE CLEAN that stuff is Awesome how well it cleans.

    The fumes arrrghhhhh whew ..

    N a s t y

WE are sadly no longer Married but still communicate very good & do regularly enjoy a lunch or a Breakfast together .. No no chance of a reconciliation …Ive since remarried & she still has a Bf she won't untangle herself with ..

Have a good day/nite stay safe & take care 👍😮

Hey ray why not used a parts washer instead of all that brake clean ?

  71. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Rick Ptak says:

Doesn't FelPro make a Gasket for the Tranny Pan? It would save a lot of mess from applying the RTV from the tube.

  72. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Robert Leet says:

I had a 2009 VW Routan which was built by Dodge and all that I can say is their vehicles are pieces of junk. Engine would shut down random once or twice a year and never throw a engine code.

Normally just use a wire cup or wire wheel for dressing those surfaces… Takes all of about 40 seconds… $7 for a wire cup, maybe $15 for a wire wheel and I've been using the same ones I bought in 1998 ever since.

Also, who collects your waste oil??? Round here we aren't allowed to put chlorinated brake clean in the waste oil. You started out with the non-chlorinated (Green can) and switched to chlorinated (Red can) but both were going into your waste oil.

  79. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars MrRaf34 says:

They are definitely two different services. If I'm even doing a flush it's on something that hasn't had normal service and has higher mileage. That said, If I'm doing a flush with something that has a serviceable filter, I do flush first, then drop pan and replace filter. Any of the junk loosened up during flush will be caught in the old filter. Of course there is extra fluid needed. In the end, Clean fluid, pan, magnet, filter, and sealing surface. Then just do regular fluid and filter service intervals after.

  80. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars David Buck says:

Do regular fluid and filter service after the first or second filter change, the transmission doesn't need filter changes, just do fluid changes. If a filter becomes clogged on a broken in transmission that means something is wrong with the transmission.

  81. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Arthur Gay says:

What's that thing doing still on the road? Where I live all of those body style caravans have rusted into the ground and have been recycled into empty buildings in China.

  84. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Taiga Inoue says:

It appears that you topped up the transmission with regular ATF. It is my understanding that you are supposed to use ATF+4 ONLY on these vehicles.

  85. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Robin Barrow says:

Former CVC 3.8 owner – that valve train noise comes standard as miles go up, and puts used oil (small usage) from 80k on with religious maintenance, but not enough to chase down. Nearly 300k before I sent it off with no engine/trans work, never left us anywhere, hauled more stuff than the Clampetts, numerous vacations, a hurricane, a Tornado, two kids and two crazy parents all over the country. Was a great vehicle all things considered. Had to fix the auto doors wiring several times, a new steering rack under warranty, and a water pump. Rebuilt the suspension, was a little hard on tires (spousal unit drives "spirited", I drive a dab more than that) but 10 of 10, would recommend to a friend.

Get a proper parts washer – do your customers a positive and add Lucas Transmission additive , work it into your quoted price

  89. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Jerry Quintiliani says:

What surprises me, is there seem to be very few gaskets any more; lot's of sealer. Being old school and old, seems to me gates are better and less labor to use.

  90. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Sweet Spot 83 Ford Shorty Van says:

For the life of me I don't know why they don't have drain plugs in Trans pans like oil pans. It makes life easier.

  91. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Craig Parton says:

There are so many things that pop out to me in your videos, even jobs like this that should be simple. First and foremost, these drain and refill transmission fluid changes are utterly pointless. The service fill on that transmission is at least 12 quarts. Why change 1/3 of the fluid? If you don't have a machine to flush out all the fluid, don't waste your time or the customer's money. I also winced when you mangled the transmission fluid box. It's so easy, you gently tear the cardboard on its perforation, discard the circular part, and fold the tab back to hold the spout in place. That way you don't need to hold the spout when you're pouring. No time for that though, right? Just rip and go. Also, anyone who sells those fluid boxes also sells the containers with measurements on them to put the fluid in with. Easier and faster than guessing.

And that poor Roloc. I saw many comments talking about how shiny the pan was. Maybe take one minute and scrape the bulk of the original gasket off before using it, and don't run your grinder at max RPMs. If it's old silicone residue, a wire wheel chews it up nicely. Lucky that pan was steel, you do that to aluminum and you'll have some valleys in your sealing surface. And starting bolts into an aluminum transmission housing with an impact wrench? Why??? Can I do that? Yes. Will I do it? Hell no!

I know this is nitpicky stuff, but c'mon this is a simple job that honestly shouldn't have even been done. But I'm sure most of the comments will be "OMG YOU ARE SO AMAZINGGGG"

  92. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Matthew Removeafterwashing says:

as you said sometime ago, your part washing machine is not working because of broken pump. That's not a hard to fix? Just buy some pump and you can have a proper parts washing machine? idk

I have always hated the Mopar transmission pans that use sealant instead of a gasket. Thanks for the video Ray.

  94. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Disguyovahea says:

Number one thing about Chrysler pans, they do NOT like sealant. If you've got a slight leak do again with a gasket. Ain't no reason to use sealant on an at home job anyway.

Hello there Ray, excellent logs and I’m really pleased you are doing well for yourself….I have a Vauxhall gm corsa e on a 2018 plate automatic cvt transmission with 45k miles….I drained the trans fluid cold just over 5 litres and it was black….replaced it with the same amount, drove it for a couple of weeks which was ok and when I did it again ( as I didn’t flush it re old fluid possibly in the torque converter) it now tends to judder in the lower gears…not sure if this was brewing slowly and bad timing on my part as I’ve done a lot of research and I couldn’t just leave filthy oil in the transmission….any ideas would be appreciated preferably positive…kind regards to you and everyone out there and take care…Mark from the U.K. 🇬🇧
