Come along with Eric O. and have a look at this 1994 Ford F-150 5.0 that won't come off a fast idle and is hard to restart when it is hot. We also get to play with the OBDI option of our new Actron CP9690 Elite Auto Scanner. Based on symptoms along this was a pretty easy one to diagnose to be honest with you but we still need to verify before blasting the parts cannon at it.

Only gets 9.5 mpg can you help me out
I have a 89 f150 dose same thing and it also runs 2500 rpms at 50 mph and eats gas it is a 5.8 liter would that work on my truck
You always bail me out, I'm having a fast idle problem on the same truck. Haven't shopped for an OBD1 scanner but since I have three older buggies here, now I will. Thx muchly!
Glad I found this video! I'm working on a 91 and it's doing the exact same thing. High idle and hard to start when hot and runs very rich/rough when it does at first. Another problem I'm having is when I rev it, it takes very long to return to idle. Maybe this is tied in with it? Thanks!
Thanks for this video, gonna help me out on my 94 Ford 150.
Nice Eric O Easy test showing the coolant sensor went bad by showing the -40 to 254 testing the circuit for integrity @SouthMainAutoRepairLLC
This video kinda reminds me of the blue f150 flareside you did a video on a while back Eric O with the 5.0 @SouthMainAutoRepairLLC
I feel asleep waiting for you to get to the problem.
Finally had to retire the old Actron 9690 when I got rid of my old truck and got a newer one and needed to view individual wheel speed sensors. But I kept it around cause you just never know.. Thanks for a great video.
This worked for my 94 e150 thanks!
Fan clutch turning kinda slow.
If you are checking this, I have a 1994 F150. The odometer and speedometer are not working. I located the 10 amp fuse and replaced it and it worked for 2 seconds then the fuse blows. I did not know what it is but say references of a ACM module. Where is this and do you think that's what it is?
I like the new scan tool 🔧
Thanks for all the knowledge, it surely helps to listen to a Pro.
The sultry voice of Eric O…..
You Rock!
Just the video I needed. My son has been having problems with his F250 with the 4.9L engine stalling and getting poor gas mileage. He has replaced most everything. I am going to order one of the Actron CP9690 scanners using your link and see if this or the MAF sensor is causing the stall after the truck is warmed up. It has left him stranded twice, once a couple of years ago and last week.
FYI: -40°F is exactly the same temperature as -40°C. It's the one and only temperature where they are the same.
I bought an Innova scanner with OBD1 hookups. I know I won't use them very often, but they are good to have and nobody else has them, lol
I always hear Obi-Wan connectors.
U Da Man, Thanx 4 vid posting.
Eric, nice video I enjoy watching your videos on these older Ford's. I have a question, I have an 87 Ford f150 5.0 starts and idles okay. Revs up okay in park, but under a load 20 to 25 mph it starts to stumble. Changed a few things but still having an issue, any help would be greatly appreciated thank you
Is it the same for 96 f-150 5.0 ? I have trouble start after warm I also have to hold gas to the floor sometimes when finally star smell like to much gas .
Another fine bwd part just saying good job EO. JB🐴
I have one f150 94 and when im driving on the hiway sometimes the transmisión not working properly and it kiks, a think is the transmisión because the engine seems to be working fine and I dont have a engine light , or could it be other problem?
THANK YOU for this a very informative video and well made……It sure helped me target on my problem to fix on my 1993 F150…. I like the Idea of the "CP9690 Elite Auto Scanner."…
OBD one can OB.
Hello sir, can u say to me please where goes hose from intake manifold (from single port) thanks!
Thank God!!!!! For years I’ve had the hard to start when hot problem with my 1993 F150, 5.0!!! 2 garages in Colorado Springs couldn’t figure it out. Watched your video, spent $30 at O’Reilly’s, changed the sensor (after changing everything over the years) and for the first time in a decade it starts hot without burying the gas pedal!!!
I have a 93 F150 with a 5.8 L that calls for a .044gap, I bought new iridium plugs there factory gap at .030 that say do not change the gap. Should I got them the .44 or leave as is?
Second time watching 5/28/2020
I have 94 f150 cranks but no start will a bad ECT sensor do that?
Currently do not own a scanner but my newest of 7 vehicles is a 1995 ford f-150 5.0 standard trans. I have a fluke 179 multimeter that is fast becoming my best friend. Eric, this channel is way better than a dry erase board approach. Im looking for the multi meter application test for the MAP on this f150. How do I search your specific videos? you are the first channel I have ever joined and believe me Im a channel snob. thx Eric
How do I get the battery terminal adapter??? What is it called
Who remembers sticking a paper clip in the eec and counting the blinks on the engine light? Also, I had two of these and they always ate MAF sensors causing a high idle.
took care of my problem,,,,i had the exact same symptoms,,,,,,,,you rock
Gotta hand it to ya Mr. O, you the best dianostic savey mechanic I've ever seen. I like your style and admire your knowledge……
I have 96 f150 5.0, on hot days my truck doesn't want to start after a shutdown. Spits and sputters, I found out that if I cycle the tank selector switch it runs fine. Trying find the video on what part is at fault.
Nice scan tool but my truck is stuck on high idle. I’ve changed everything thing except the distributor. After I unplugging the IAC it idles down.
I pretty much have same vehicle, 1997. Runs great but with1 elusive problem. When driving and slowing down engine rpms engine stalls. When slowing down to stop light engine stalls. Starts up again fine, idles fine. Any ideas? Iv been thinking about buying this scan tool but was unsure of its obd1 capabilities. Thx
Hi Eric, Love you videos , watch and thumbs up them all the time. This video really got my attention as I drive a 1989 F150 300 6 cylinder 5 speed and I've had a similar issue as the pickup in your video, that is, idle fluctuates from about 1100-1450 back and forth. So far I've replaced the coolant temp sensor, the IAC, and the TPS. also removed, cleaned , checked the EGR, smoke tested for vacuum leaks and the symptoms stayed the same. Sooo, I bit the bullet and bought the Actron 9690 hoping to access all the data that you accessed BUT of course it doesn't have the pages or at least I can't access the pages that you go to in this video that show sensor data. I wrote down the steps you took and tried several times but the information just won't come up on the screen. If you know of something that will help to access the sensor data for my truck please let me/us know. My 9690 seems to have current software, burn date is 03/12/19 and the SW ID is 0b0b. Thank you in advance.
Is the NAPA store beside you yours?
Hi Eric..greetings from the UK..loved your story about your son hiding all the nuts and bolts around the garage..lol… and I love watching you fix stuff. Reminds me of a story about when I was around 8/9 left to watch my dads garage while he went to the parts store. As I had been helping him all summer break, he left me and my dog in charge for about 20 mins ,unfortunately he had previously showed me how the sprayer worked and he even let me have a go on some cars from time to time. So being eager to keep busy I practised my paintwork skills by spraying the dog met silver. I got the biggest walloping and was sent to bed early. It took mum and dad hours using paint thinners to get it all off. To this day I blame him for showing me how the sprayer worked…:).I love your channel and wish I had been able to carry on with the garage when he passed away but was too young. Also hope you don't mind me saying this, but you do sound like Michael Keaton as Beetleguise..lol..its a good voice by the way. All the best from the UK…cheers Bill
Tight is tight. Broke is to tight
Hi Eric would you show sometime how to recalibrate a ford 2012 ford compassRon O
Have to prime it to crank it black smoke idles High only will run on a quarter of a gas pedal will bog down if you give it any more gas could that be my problem
I bought that Actron because of your reviews on it. I have an '89 GMC and a "13 Ford, and it works great on both of them! Thank you.
