In this video I bring you through the process I use to replace exhaust manifolds on a Chevy 2500HD with the big 6.0. This is a pretty common job in our shop and is pretty much the same process for all GMC, Chevrolet trucks with V-8 LS engines. Broken bolts can be recessed or protruding and both are relatively easy to get out if you have the proper tools. come along as I get started on the passenger side fist. -Enjoy!

What kind of bits do you use? Link?
Trust me, leave the engine off when applying anything to a serpentine belt. Ask my still intact but once crushed index and middle fingers how they felt after a ride through 1000 rpm Vulcan V6 Ford Ranger idler pulley. **Spoiler** don’t be me. Also, don’t do it on Labor Day ‘Cos the ER is less staffed and the wait times may be longer.
Thx great work 👍
Nice job on that extraction …you should be a dentist
I've never had any luck with broken bolt extractors mostly because I can't drill straight to save my ass. Always go straight to the welder. works every time.
Where did you get the Jeep hat. Thanks for the great video
I live in Korea
I broke my 100cc motorcycle muffler stud bolt and I'm annoyed bolt head 10 mm
It's a m6 bolt. It's driving me crazy
The interpretation might be weird because it's a translator
Thanks for the helpful video. Given that so many LS exhaust manifold bolts have been breaking for years, what is the reason. Poor quality bolts from the factory?
The pro's friend is the torch and the DIY's friend is penetrating oil + time…
Apply belt with engine running. Made me laugh out loud Eric
What's the spec on the torque
Plugs always good 7 bucks per gal !!
Oh yah cap cave man!!!!
None on the ugaduga gun
Ju ju is real send your way bud
Eric Your a true professor up in Rustorooy NY!
👍
You can see where it was leaking
How come you don't work on Ford vehicles?
Would that cause a p0420 code to pop up?
the blue color adds ten horsepower
When we come across a broken bolt — we hold a nut over the broken stud and weld it on — broken bit comes right out
Leroy jethrow gibbs!! First NCIS reference I've heard on YouTube LOL
Just installed a new manifold on my 2001 Corvette…luckily didn’t break any bolts on removal and then used a tap to clean out the threads and then screwed in 2 dowels a few threads on either end to hold the manifold up in place…easy peezy !!
Gay mans chev
I love how you shit talk the bolts after they loosen from the heat. That just made my whole day.
Common thing as in mileage or age?
I am surprised that living in the salt belt like me near Toronto Ontario Canada you don't apply anti seize on bolts and sparkplugs going into aluminium. I put that shit on everything.
I installed new heads on my 5.3L and two of the exhaust manifold bolt holes weren't threaded–both on the left side. Ugh. I've got to get in and try to tap those holes in place. Pulling the fender might make it easier—thanks!
Blue coating is most probably Xylan, it has non-stick property's.
Nice job Eric nice to see there’s some people out there that still takes pride in there work. So tell me what caused the manifold bolts to be broken just curious. Oh by the way I learned something today about the 5.3 and it’s computers crap. Today I pulled the number one plug to see if they needed to be replaced and I discovered that this truck had the wrong plugs in it plus the iridium tips were burned completely off so not having any I put it back in and put up tools shut the hood and got in the truck and started it up and 💥 bam now I have a cotton picking mis fire code just for looking at the spark plug so not owning a scanner I had to drive 11 miles to a friends shop to clear the dang code. How crazy is that. Plus I’m possibly facing back surgery and leaning over in the truck pulling on the ratchet my back is really let me have it now and with my back and knee problems I can’t hardly work on my vehicle anymore and I’m only 73 but already having one back surgery I am now limited to what I can do anymore. The car are becoming more aggravating to work on nowadays and always had hot rods and truck and cars when I was younger and a mechanic most of my life. But those days are gone and I had to ask my friend who has his own shop now to stick a set of plugs in for me and it’s depressing to know that you can’t do those easy things anymore. I guess those time come huh….
I really enjoyed this video!
I have 2010 express van drivers side rear spark plug came out when I was driving near the city of Buffalo all good put it in the next time about a month latter on the thurway coming back from Rochester. Out it comes in a pouring rain storm again not happy pull off the side of the road put the fu ker in again get back in the trucks
Soaking wet thankful no one hit the crappie chey when I was under it next day tell the boss about the used truck he owns he said locktite the plug in I took the plug out to see the thread oblong like a foot ball not sure what happened but it a game changer for me I put 35000 miles on this truck never seen it as bad as this it will be getting a new head soon but in the meantime red rtv seems to hold and the misfire gone.
i worked on foreign cars 45 years ago. I still work on my own cars. It saved me a fortune. I learn a lot from you. Thanks! you know so many "tricks" from working in the trenches every day that i just wouldn't be aware of if not for you. Volvo 240, subaru outback, 2000 miata, fox mustang, massey ferguson 245 diesel, 1987 chev v10 Thanks again.
I've been watching a lot of your videos just in my spare time its training videos to me and thoroughly enjoy watching your channel, Im just a small-time shady tree trying to be more on my own and you've made me some dollars or at least verified what I had planned. Your very knowledgeable and explain things very simply. Thank you! Also taking on 6.0 manifolds sometime soon, outside in Massachusetts, in the driveway lol its all Ive got for now. But the customer talked me into it when he offered to get me tanks and torches and pay me. Think Ill have to purchase some south main sweatshirts if all goes well.
What drill bits are you using colbolt ,titanium, hss
A Tommy Wang and the Boys special from the home of the Kung Flu!
Is it advisable to put anti-seize on the manifold bolts?
Eric does Mrs O ever come out into the shop, stand & listen to you go on by urself when the camera isn’t rolling? Something about working by urself makes a man think creatively… Lol….
Mine is cleaner in the engine bay but sadly the wheel wells on rear and lower foot jams are doing the classic GM tendency to rust away.
An oldie I had to watch again… for The Who knows how many times, over 5 I bet… Anyway Eric should get your induction heater with a blast of pb blaster after to make the smoke rise the a little tap with the ugga dugga then ur done but you knew that anyway… 😂🤣👌🤙
I believe, since a lot of engines are now made of aluminum, the steel manifold studs are easily snapped, due to metal differentation, and therefore, corrosion. Using a good high temp anto-sieze compound, such as the high temp Never Soeze. Is wise to use
In the days of quality steel, cast, amd forged engines, the answer to frozen bolts and studs, was the old acetelene torch…..
Never failed.
I am in the HVAC/R trade. It is a 50/50 mix of getting good aftermarket parts, that hold up.
Deodorant can quieten a squeaky belt too. Its temporary but it will work long enough to get ya home and keep everyone from staring at you.
When putting in the new manifold bolts should I run a thread cleaner in the holes first or does it really not matter ?
Great job sir, I’m up here in Hemlock/Livonia My shop was in Livonia and E Avon , I was always the Torch guy. Never did a big job without torch and snap on air hammer ( we called god ). Western NY work is so different than most of the world due to the logistics/ cost of getting salt for the roads Good ole Retsof now Hamptons corners The salt mine!
Also as a woman watching countless hours of ur videos, I absolutely love to hear how u still after all ur years of marriage u still flirt crazy with Mrs. O it makes my heart smile for her.
Loved ur NCIS reference. I was a huge fan of that show.
I always worry about snapping those easy outs. The heat makes all the difference in the world.
Not working on my truck anymore has cleaned up my language… some. Great vids.
