In this video I remove and install a new OEM compressor on a customers 2009 Honda FIT with the big 1.5L. The compressor on the car is still good but the magnetic clutch has started to fail and the customer requested a whole new compressor.
-Enjoy!

Worked in a shop that charged 10% over cost and showed list. Worked my butt off for these people. Lots of return customers. Till the owner died. Next shop I worked at charged list and put in the cheapest parts. Had to quit them. They thought I would warranty labor myself on garbage parts. I don't work for free. Those people went belly up real fast. A dealership tried to hire me for $7 an hour. I went to the mans office and told him straight up where to go and it wasn't up. I did my apprenticeship on Rolls and Shelby and Alphas and Jensens. Now I work on old lawnmowers. lol
Glad you are out of your funk. I missed you. ❤❤
Had the evaporator replaced on my car a couple of months ago. A week after replacement I started to smell gas again inside the car, although it was very faint. It gradually cooled less and less. Went back to the ac guy and he fixed it for free. The o-rings that came with the evap were not good. After changing those it is good as new again. On a 20 year old car.
It's a Honda Jazz in Ireland if sold new by a Honda dealer, Honda Fit if second-hand Jap Import …
Hell, just call them jizz screws. That would be fun, too…😂
I had a 2018 Civic and the AC went completely out at 25k miles. I bought the car at 12k miles. The dealership diagnosed it for $150 and said that the front shaft seal on the compressor was faulty and caused the refrigerant to leak out. Instead of honoring the extended warranty on the front shaft seal, they insisted on replacing the whole compressor, clutch and coil for $1900. I called some other local shops in my area and I was told every time that only the Honda dealership can do it. I had enough BS and sold the car back to the dealership with broken AC at 29k miles, getting $15,500 for it. I paid $19,000 for it 2.5 years earlier.
Glad honda stop making the Fit its cheap tiny little car. Im Honda/Acura person but in my opinion the fit was crappy.
another good video
The back and forth with Mrs O over the size of the funnel with her final comment of it’s never to big, lol. Ranshu parts, good call, their right over the summit from me in Sparks Nevada, thanks Eric.
"This is a two-handed job."
That's what she said 😛
My wife says thank you for the hey there viewers she is so happy
LOL.. Remember the wife is always correct.😊
You make this look so easy! I need to replace my compressor on my truck and not looking forward to it!
Hi Mr. O, I was wondering shouldn’t the in-line filter next to the accumulator been replaced??
L o L Gotta like your lingo 😊😊😊
Andy's Name was on the cool tech gauge….
South Main Auto.. When you switched funnels and Mrs. O said that's not that much bigger, that was funny. But when you said the other funnel is too big and Mrs. O said it's never too big, I laughed so hard my side started hurting. The commentary between you two is awesome!! Oh yeah nice job on the A/C work too. That looked like an easy one to do. Some can be a PITA.
Move to Florida!
That's cold 🥶
I'm glad everyday is your first day. Don't make me feel bad when I'm the same way, daily first rodeo.
I agree with you because replacing O-rings on certain parts on cars tend to make them leak the old ones 80% of the time work better than the replacement ones
I love Mrs.O! She is a darling you’re a blessed man you found a real woman right there Brother ! the best to you and your family
Awesome!
Those Honda Fits will run forever if you undercoat them and do all the required maintenance. 👍
all the shops in a 5 mile radius of my house, won't do a recover/recharge. they look at me funny when I ask and explain to them what i'm doing. mind you they ALSO don't want to do the work I'm trying to do, most of the time, since it's not "profitable".
I guess at that age requesting the compressor to be changed isn't that odd. I did the clutch replacement on my jeep's compressor last year, and it wasn't too bad a job, minus getting the clutch shimmed correctly.
Mr. O getting a little salty with the Mrs. then proceeds to sweet talk her! If you're scared just say you're scared, no shame!😂😂😂
Thanks for the video!
Calling the screws “Phillips” is like
garlic to a vampire. Watch them
blow away to dust…
Not that it matters for those clips, but get yourself a nice Vessel JIS. It's nice when you work on a lot of Japanese stuff. Also, I gotta say that you have the second best wife in the world
am i the only one that hates the sound rubber gloves make? lol 😀😖
why doesn't company use 18mm fasteners?
Lets get a bigger funnel!! At the end you will obey the woman LOL
Since I only replace one of these every five years or so, I just vent it to atmosphere. There are hundreds of thousands of cars running around with known Freon leaks. Those people are the real problem. Well, and SpaceX punching holes in the ozone layer.
Good thing you had plenty of room to work with😅
Mr O. If I could make a suggestion? If you have an old, spare hard drive, you can remove the rare earth magnets and plop it on your extension. pulls nuts no prob
So the original compressor was working?? Why did they want it replaced?? It's not like an AC compressor is a maintenance item. You just keep it properly charged with the correct weight of refrigerant and it should be fine! That is the "maintenance". Almost every time compressors burn out or go is because it was ran low on refrigerant.
The 2 finger tickler.
I don't often comment, but, as always, I enjoy your videos and appreciate your code of ethics! Thanks for another greta video.
The word "graduate" — For more than 150 years the word 'graduate' had only one usage, just one. Schools graduated students. "I was graduated by the Bath Area High School". "She was graduated by Harvard University".
It changed about 20-years ago, some special flowers thought they should graduate from schools, not the other way around; a secondary definition was added to many dictionaries, the addition allows students to graduate schools. "He graduated from Bath Area High School", ."She graduated from Harvard University". These people never knew what the definition of graduate was, so they just made it up. It is just wrong.
You sure have a long extension.
IMHO, Honda makes geat engines. Thanks for sharing! Stay Healthy!
You mentioned that the A/C bolts sometimes break inside the compressor. I was wondering 🤔 if you ever considered applying a little bit of anti-sieze on the non-threaded shanks of the bolts 🔩?
Loved this video!!!! Hilarious !!!!
Sure looks like that Honda is in much better shape than the typical Chevy/Ford vehicles. Thanks for the video and the cameo by Mrs. "O"..
I thought it was cow farts?
I’m a Honda-fanboi. I didn’t even know about the JIS thing. 😂
This Fit owner is NOT a Honda guy. No blue, OEM oil filter. Shame!!
One question. Can a RE-manufactured compressor be NEW as well. Sounds a little like an oxymoron to me. What do I know. I drive a Silverado and never need to work about this 😂😂😂
312k on my old 98 ford windstar with original compressor, and never touched ac system (I did change the clutch disk at about 290). Can't believe it still blows cold air, and hasn't seized. Bought the car new a long time ago, and never needed to add refrigerant yet. But, I'm sure it is getting close to the end for that compressor, the water pump, accessories, tensioner, etc. She is a fat old cow, but gets you there.
I like your content. It has a nice balance of information and humour. Thanks for posting. BTW, thanks for acknowledging your Canadian viewers like myself.
those ridiculous Honda Fit's should be called Honda Die. that is what is going to happen to you when even a squirrel runs into the road. They don't get that good of gas mileage.. I always laugh how people put no value on their lives.
Replacing the whole compressor is like saying… yes, I know my valve stem leaks, but lets throw out 4 good tires and put some new ones on…. smh.
That is the greatest joke ever
That car was in good shape for it's age.
Remember guys you heard it here 1st. It's NEVER too big😢😢😢
lol she got you
That Honda will run forever
How long before your supplier get's bought out by some large manufacture/wholesaler.
That's what happens to distributors that don't tow the line now' a days..
It's sad.
But, I love your channel Eric…….and Mrs, "O" is great…………..
Preventive maintenance. not required work, but gives peace of mind it won't grenade itself and cause further expenses later that don't need to happen.
They must not be planning to replace that Honda any time soon either!
Thanks for the video Eric and the Lovely Mrs. O.
JIS look like Philips on a Japanese carb until you strip them out…
👍🏻👊🏻
@Eric O what would you aprox. charge a customer for evac/recharge, that wanted to chg their own compressor
Mrs. O was really on a roll in this one!
Bless you Mrs.O
I wondered what all that oil was splash on underside of Honda
Mr O…Astro makes a ratchet for those lo-pro sockets. It goes over the 17mm hex and makes it an even lower-profile setup.
Rolling on the floor… It it's not you, its her…. " Never too big" heheheheh
Funny that you remember your mistaken 17/19 belt tensioner numbers but everything good memory goes out the window lol! If this was your car, would you have tried to add a Honda shim kit or new clutch plate or just changed the whole compressor out like this guy, just curious? I know Honda actually offers a shim kit that reduces the plate gap when it wears?
Mr. O. my memory is like a bunny tail………short and fuzzy🤣
The Customer's Always Right! LOL… and they even brought their own parts! facepalm….
Who in their right mind has an air conditioner compressor replaced in the dead of winter? Needed a recharge but guess the customer knows best?
Owner gets the plastic rustproofed, but doesn't wash the salt out of the engine bay…
Rainman Ray passed out. He saw you did not replace the O-rings and the high and low side little teeny weeny valves on a vehicle that has 200k miles. He came around when some brake clean was sprayed on his upper lip.
I swear honda has the worst ac compressors. There's very few of my cars that have needed compressors, but almost all of the hondas i or my family own have needed one. Granted sometimes it's not the compressor itself just needs a clutch and bearing but still. Some euro stuff like volvo is god awful too.
That’s what she said!!! 😂😂😂😂😂
They always have to have the last word…. Get a bigger funnel.. classic video ..great work Eric..
You’re in rare form for this one, Mr O! Thanks for another great video. Hope you’re feeling better.
Probably a good idea to replace the compressor. Better than the original puking its guts and scattering bits throughout the system. Good job!
you can put a compressor and talk to her at the same time, your my hero!!!
So my shop just bought an Autel 900 maxi system , for the school buses, it might be over kill but had to get the adapters for the Cummins and cat motors, when you update your software does it require you to update every year or could you wait a year?? 1400.00 to update…. What’s your thoughts on the Autel brand scan tools?
Honda just plain kicked our asses with their cars and bikes. My dad was teaching them how to become industrialized after ww2. I think they listened. At least honda did. Dood they started with tin cans.
Thanks!
If this fixing cars doesn't work there is always the Mrs. O show.
My wifes ac would work for a while in her 08 civic. Then it would stop and not come back on. I accidentally found a video after I replaced the condenser the lines, basically everything but the compressor and what the video said to do was to remove the washer under the nut that held the clutch on and I'll be dammned if that didn't fix it.
Funniest SMA video yet!!! Mrs. O.: "That's NOT that much bigger!" Eric O.: "That's what she said!" Mrs. O.: "I don't think so-It's NEVER TOO big!"
Eric your a lucky man to have mrs.O . Love the videos 👍🏻
Whats the best scanner to program a used ecu..Mine is faulty and my ucandas wont write the vin or program ecu so it works and key starts the famouse fit.I seen some guys program vin in matching ecu and it worked. The maxisys is a mint by the way lol
Worked on the wife's car this weekend and made my torque wrench sound as I tightened the bolts!😊
what is your email?
this is why im not a fan of these stub nosed cars. they put the engine sideways, which makes getting to regular service parts difficult. call me crazy but i like a long nosed vehicle with an engine bay i can reach around in.
kinda why i try keeping my 270000 mile 08 ford explorer running. its easy to reach majority of parts. alternator is on top easy access, water pump right up front and outside of the timing cover. she may be old with a lot of miles, but shes a diyers dream with ease of access to common breakdown components.
what you said at the end there is why i wish i knew a mechanic like you around. recently went to a chain tire store for an alignment and they wouldnt do it because after seeing i had replaced an outer tie rod, they claimed inner and outer on the other side were bad…despite me later rechekcing and seeing the tiniest of wiggle. and apparently my ball joints are bad as well. at least with a mechanic like you i would likely get the alignment, be told it wont be perfect and when i replace the parts bring it back in for another charge, or replace the parts and then bring it back.
honest mechanics seem still so hard to find.
Big and 1.5 should never be used in the same sentence.
At my age you have to give your tube more than a little wiggle in the morning 🤣Cheers Mr O good to see you & try & stay out of the funk we need your videos.(BEST CHANNEL FOR AUTOMOTIVE INSTRUCTION )
Like to see you getting that Honda fit and take your for a test drive Eric
What are the odds! Scotty Kilmer also had on Honda fit episode. Great minds!?!?
Is it that hot in New York right now that you need to get the A/C fixed? LOL
Sitting here watching while recovering from some PRNY or Michigander snowbird passing the cold or Rona to me while down here I feel the same as you. Never less it was a great show. Good info as always. As usual “Thanks for posting” !!! Get well soon Mr O ! Hope Mrs O doesn’t catch it. My Mrs did !!!!!!
So what do you call them if not Philips head?
I really like the banter between you and your wife. It adds a lot to your channel.
Don't you love when the serpentine belt is about to go back on and all the sudden it comes down on you like a bead necklace 😁Those o-rings looked to have been replaced before, from the factory they're black.
edit – It was also really cool to hear you buy from Ranshu as well, always had good experience with them.
