In this video I share with you my frustration I encountered tracking down a battery draw on a Hyundai Genesis. I should have recorded the process but I was on and off the car so much through out the day it just wasn't going to happen. I hope this video shows the importance of following your diagnostic plan and go with the facts you find along the way no matter what you will end up at the answer. -Enjoy!

Absolutely amazing. You definitely have a gift for automotive electronics

  2. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Renzo Rivas says:

Man I have the same finggggg problem same story on the same car I hope it solves my problem Iโ€™ll test it tomorrow thank you a million for the video

    You are an incredible mechanic!

  4. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars JaredSVX says:

I am about to go out and look at that fuse in my 4.6! I have been having an intermittent issue where the car just dies and doesnt want to turn back on AT ALL!

  5. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars tmsz28 says:

Thanks so much for this video. Just bought one from the auction with this EXACT issue. I contemplated running it back thru the auction because I hate electical. Everything would continue working when the ign was off, & if it sat for more than a night, the battery would drain. Thanks again for sharing. Now I can sale this thing ๐Ÿ˜

  6. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars julian nazareth says:

Like your work no doubt it would be great to get my car fixed by you .

  7. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Joe Mullin says:

Another outstanding teaching video. Not many can troubleshoot as well but even fewer can demonstrate the process as clearly. Informative and instructive videos that keep me watching.

  8. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars boostedsil40 says:

just think if you did the tecnique where you pull fuses one at a time time till amps drop this would had you look at the fuse box legend to see what circuit that fuse goes to and seen that fuse doesnt belong in about 3 minutes of work, ouch!

  9. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Jim Bos says:

I love following your electrical diagnostic thought pathways. Am learning so much and realizing that you follow common sense and logic, where a lot of shops don't. They just keep changing parts until they fix it or they don't. Great work Eric. Please keep the videos coming.

  10. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Tim West says:

I love it you are the man I just learned a ton of info , fantastic thank you

  11. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars sacrat9597 says:

What do you think of these cars?

  12. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars haskellfilmz says:

OK so first I must say, YOU my friend I would love to give a big hug and buy you a 12 pack of beer as You made my day wonderful! Not only did you save me approx. 6 hours of a nightmare and I probably wouldn't have figured it out the actual problem in the end AND my new boss wouldn't be happy with me except for a bunch of things i've already done for him which he didn't agree with at first but later he was amazed with my idea. So he asked me to attempt to fix his 2012 Hyundai V-8, loaded to the hilt, not the Genesis but the other one (cant remember the name at the moment) and this thing was messed up! The keyless entry refused to work at all, the cars display remained on with the key off, the air bag suspension completely collapsed and my boss has been out of a car for over a month! He had two people attempt to fix it with NO luck! So after I tell him I have a lot of experience deep in dashboards he got a big smile when asking me, "Do you think you might be able to fix my car?" "Because I would love you if could actually fix it!" So he has it brought back from the auto repair place as it did drain the batt but could drive with a new battery. So after awhile of me working on it he came out to see how I was doing. Now I will give myself credit just for knowing that sometimes You Tube will totally solve your problem on the car you are working on, but seriously, This one was AMAZING! Thank You so MUCH! I respect how you took your time to literally take us through the experience which I would have probably missed a couple of the diagnosis things you did and I would have been so fruustrated and given up on eventually! So I kept watching your video as it was very informative even though It wasn't the same model I was working on and it had different problems like your screen didnt come on always so it may not be the fix for me but I watched it through and my boss comes out and says , man are you seriously sitting down in my car watching You Tube videos? Really? And I said , "Yup!" and even though I have not actually finished the video but am at the fuse conclusion and again it's not the same model of car AND at that point I have done nothing to the car but open the fuse box, I stood up walked over to the hood and said,"And I may have actually solved your problem" I looked down at that fuse location with my amazement saw it had a fuse in it! I pulled the darn fuse and right then he had already grabbed the key fob and he hits it… WHAM! Car is fixed! Talk about someone that loves his new found employee!!! That fixed what was like 12 codes and multiple problems!! The car was perfect after pulling the fuse! I am so thankful as I am only an honest mechanic who wanted to be successful in fixing the problem! Boss asked me what I wanted to be paid for that and went on to say "I would have paid thousands to make the problem go away!" , so I said $50 would be reasonable as that is what he had already given me the day before for parts money! No matter what money I would have made I probably wouldn't have fixed it and that is the nightmare I would have endured if YOU my friend had not spent your valuable time to make this video and if I didn't know how important it can be sometimes to look on You Tube about complicated or simple fix'! Again thank You as you made my day great today here in Tucson Arizona on 01/10/2022! Namaste, CH. Thumbs up and Subscribe as I did! See my channel as well as I deal with actual news and wonderful conspiracy theories, which most of them turn out to be true facts!

  13. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars David Longman says:

Wonder what that fuse position was originally intended to do. Perhaps supply equipment not fitted to that individual car. Might be an idea to fit a blown fuse in that spot to prevent helpful people popping a fuse in just because. Good diagnosis.

  14. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Gypsea says:

I know this is an old thread but, dude you just saved my life. I was having the exact same problem, pulled the #4 fuse and it's fine now. Except I just cant believe that fuse isn't needed. I'm sure mine came from the factory with that fuse installed. I'm gonna start doing some serious digging but, thanks so much for posting. Guys like you are what makes YT great.

  15. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Efrem Williams says:

Can't tell you how many times customers have stuck fuses in spots where no fuse belonged only to create more problems.

  16. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Craig Miller says:

    Brilliant Eric! Nice job.

  17. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Grampster Champster says:

    A real mechanic

  18. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Greg says:

I really wished I could find a mechanic like you near me. You really are top notch.

  19. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars tridium6111 says:

Obviously the blank label indicates that particular fuse position requires a blown fuse to be inserted. Don't believe me? Remove the good fuse and pop in a blown one. See? problem solved….

  20. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Roy z says:

    Good video

  21. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars tirecheck says:

    Youโ€™re the best

  22. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Pete Snyder says:

where can I get this wiring Diagram? my 2010 Genesis 3.8 is having a similar problem, but now has shorted something out.

  23. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Mickey melton says:

maybe this has been asked already but why is the other 2 or three circuits tied to a blank space in the fuse box?

  24. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Nic A. says:

Our industry needs guys like you teaching the young mechanics starting out. Thank you for these videos, this was a good refresher for me.

  25. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars DJ says:

The power of thermal energy is great once you properly

  26. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars nikond90 says:

    impressive diagnostic ability.

  27. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Joe O says:

    wow, great job

  28. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Railnut says:

I agree with you 1000% but the problem is the average Joe doesnโ€™t realize whatโ€™s involved in diagnosing a bazaar problem like that!! They see a huge charge for diagnosis but they canโ€™t see any tangible evidence of that diagnosis other than the problem is rectified. Unless the process of their diagnosis is explained to them the first thought is, this guy trying to rip me off!!! Itโ€™s a difficult situation to say the least!!

  29. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Stephen Gill says:

Hi Eric NZ here straight fact people are paying for your Knowledge ask a brain surgeon. Knowledge is the key some jobs are easy as you build that knowledge how often have you said bad earth without looking. I used to charge what the market could stand or what I knew of the customer. Other shops full price you don't have to pay me do the work and buy the tools for it . To other shops you are the cheaper option. q what does the shop charge out to the customer for your work odds on it more plus stall tall keep up the good work lol to family stay safe. Stephen

  30. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Brian Vigil says:

You just saved me a massive headache.

  31. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars BexMoney says:

Hey man ik this vid is old but what if the fuse is already taken out i just purchased a 2011 with the same issue does that mean its a wire issue?

  32. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars tv says:

As a customer car had a problem you fixed it thank you very much next time go back to that guy he fixed my problem. I'm driving my car that's what I wanted.

  33. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Pixelated Mushroom says:

I'm fighting a battery drain on my 2010 4.6 and found this badass video. Loved it. Watched the whole thing. Thanks for documenting your thinking process.

  34. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars WouterB76 says:

A typical case of a little mistake having a great effect, and i also think the way you diagnosed this was the only way, sometimes the long way is the only one to get there.

  35. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Rory Wynhoff says:

I love your thought process. I used to do the same kind of thing with computer networks and servers. Takes time to do it right.

  36. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Tyree says:

Diagnostic troubleshooting like this makes me appreciate working on my car myself, because the odds of having something weird like this occurring is so low that I've yet to meet such an epic troubleshooting dilemma…
    ๐Ÿ˜…๐Ÿ‘

I'd be cussing for weeks trying to get to the bottom of one that convoluted!
    ๐Ÿ˜ก๐Ÿคฌ๐Ÿ˜ก๐Ÿฅต

Thank you SMA for showing me a better logical approach to tracking down electrical issues, especially the wierder stuff!
    ๐Ÿ˜‰๐Ÿ‘

  37. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Hawk 1966 says:

This was incredible. Somebody saw an open spot, never checked the lid and thought they'd be a good guy or gal and threw a 10amp fuse in for the new owner.

  38. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Borg Simpson says:

thanks. well taught.. a new strategy..

  39. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Bill OGrady says:

THAT WAS BLOODY FUCKINโ€™ BRILLIANT! Loved it!

  40. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars P L says:

Hyundai should have put a blank out/dummy fuse in that spot had they been thinking..time for a recall…

  41. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Roxanne Abbott says:

Loved your thought process, loved this video, in fact I love you both!

  42. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Ronald Bergeron says:

I'm not satisfied . In a normal fuse box , a fuse does not give power to another fuse. In other words this fuse may give power to another circuit that you did not verify . I would like to hear what you have to say about this comment. Love your videos. Happy new year to you and your family.

  43. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars GeminiSeven43 says:

Once again this shows where a true professional can overcome any problem, no matter how obscure, with knowledge experience and most of all patience. Your dedication to your craft is evident in everything you do and your customers are lucky to have a knowledgeable and caring technician working on their vehicles no matter what the cost. The potential for a "Parts Cannon" approach on a vehicle like this so great in other shops with techs who care only about Getting it out the door quickly and you took the (Over) time to get it done right. Thanks so much for your video's, and for showing what a bad day looks like in between all the good ones.

  44. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Don Munro says:

Electrical can be an absolute nightmare at times. But the challenge is worth it when you find the answer.

  45. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Jeff Ploger says:

Huge shout out for making this video, ran into the same exact problem. Not sure who put a fuse in but this saved me hours after losing days to this problem

  46. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Joe Klink says:

    Outstanding find.

  47. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Alex Chliwnyj says:

Brilliant analysis. Thanks for the reference to the mV to mA conversion for automotive fuse chart. Too bad that automotive wiring diagrams are drawn so they are completely unintelligible. There have been so many times that I just wished that there was also a real schematic so that I could understand the circuit. I think they make it difficult on purpose.

  48. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Terry324 says:

Incredible diagnosis. Well done, Mr. O!

  49. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars South Main Auto Repair LLC says:

I am seeing the question a lot in the comments, "How (or did you) charge for this job?" Great question. I bill by the hour on diags. If it takes 5 hrs, I bill 5hrs. I have a 1hr minimum on all diags. I don't care what the end result is, even if it is the "just a fuse." Time is time. Fact is straight diagnosing is a losing proposition for shops from a business aspect. How so? If I bill 5hrs on a diag job and as in this case, no parts required I get 5hrs at $80 per/hr. that is $400 total. It takes a lot of thought, factory service info., expensive meters or equipment in some cases.

On the flip side let's say I do a full 4 wheel brake job in the same amount of time along with pads rotors and calipers. Now I have billed labor AND made profit on all of the parts. The work was easier, required less thought and made two to three times the profit for the shop.

So would a shop be right if they charged more for diagnostics? ABSOLUTELY! Fact is their diagnostic labor should be at least twice their hourly repair labor other wise they are losing money and time. Why waste time diagnosis a vehicle for half the profit you could make doing a simple brake job? As a shop owner who do you pay more, the general service tech changing brakes or the "A" Tech doing diags.? Why do you pay him more when he makes you less profit? Food for thought. Let me know how your shop charges. I would love to hear your thoughts on this.
