Going in again. dangerous moment. Tighten that. Bolt Yeah, it's turning, it turns, but it likes to get locked up.
Let's loosen the bolt. Come on out of there. You see it turned a little bit, then it got stuck. Get some more spray in there.
Oh it's coming farther than it had before. Come on out baby. Come on No God please no no no no no no oh no. Broke it off.
That's it. I'm I'm in I'm in trouble now shy.
It sucks you have to buy a new block
I hate Subarus for a reason!
Welcome to Canada , Ray!!!
I feel your pain! All of us have had a bad day like that!
Ended up needing a replacement engine. There was hope until an EZ-Out was tried and broke.
And now we know that water pump was original to the car. This is one reason to change these things at least every other timing belt.
Das ist ganz großer Scheißdreck!
Commiserations.😢
Crappy grad bolts
Ray, you're awesome to admit this. I mean you went wrong with the easy out getting stuck or you would have been able to drill it out. Once the engine is out of the car, you might still be able to drill it out. Most people wouldn't have admitted this mistake which has happened to people before of course.
One thing to think about as a help… leaving the casting in place, use the hole the bolt come out of as a guide for drilling, to get pretty much dead centre of the broken stud. After that… who knows? Great video, Ray. Happens to everyone, now & again.
This is going to sound crazy but i quit doing oil changes at my shop for this exact reason. A quick oil change turns in to a 2hr affair because the guy before cross thread, stripped or jerry rigged the plug. Then the customer says it wasn't like that when it came in. Im not blaming the customer because they had no clue.
I instinctively cursed on your behalf when the bolt broke lol
That is such a horrible feeling when that happens, especially after taking the time to work it back and forth for so long.
I pretty much had this same thing happen during a water pump swap out myself. Also had the wandering hole, but it happened while drilling out a broken drill bit instead of an easy-out. Lucky for me, it was a steel block.
I was able to grind down the broken drill bit for a flat surface and got it drilled out. Then I filled the hole by welding it. Ground the weld flat and re-drilled and tapped a new hole. Problem solved.
I’m not sure of that was the “correct” way to solve the issue, but that is what worked. It was a “do or die trying” type of repair as they needed their car back the same day to be able to get to work the next day.
As if the time frame wasn’t bad enough to deal with, then one of those bolts breaking off just send your heart straight to your toes. 😡
is it possible to drill out everything (EZ Out, bolt) and insert a heli-coil(?)
Suggest that you speak to Eric O.
Should have cut the head off the bolt, the pump would come off and you would have full access to the bolt shank.
I'll take reasons I don't want a Subaru for $200
been there, done that, but it's still save able…🫣🫣🫣
best thing i ever did was invest in low temp aluminum brazing rods … drill out larger than the bolt back fill the hole with the rod redrill and tap job done
Been there a few times , you just feel like shit when it happens but then you gotta get it out. 😂
Yep I hate that!
Scheiße (sorry)
That just sucks 😳🫣😬
NO cut the head off and get the oxytetracycline out
That was a real German: Scheiße
Happens to the best of us. never sucks any less
Bad Luck Ray. Sometimes that’s the Way the Cookie Crumbles. Just keep Going forward my Friend. What’s happened has gone. Steve Westmoreland 👨🏻🦳♿️🇬🇧🛠️❤️👍👍
Been there, done that. Time to break out the heli-coil set.
Oh no… 😮
All our hearts dropped for you as that dreaded moment the torque decreased and you realised it had snapped. We all know how near every rusted bolt is to a disaster.
Should have used antiseize if it's in aluminum.
Something like this happens every time I touch my car to fix it.
It's far from ruined.
You can still get that bolt out even with the easi-out broke in there.
However, i keep telling you in the comments that heat is the key but you obviously don't read comments. .because you obviously know better.
That sht's so fked up, take that sht out and fix it. lol
This was as tense as the last 2 minutes of a tied football game .
yup…i know exactly how that feel
I've had so many complications and failures with easy outs through the years, I try to avoid them now. For drilling out a recessed bolt you can use a hinge bit that comes with a guide to center the drill bit (search "hinge bit set"), or maybe use some kind of bushing if you can find one of the right size. Especially in aluminum you've only got one chance to drill the pilot hole straight, since any bit will tend to walk to the side and damage softer aluminum. I feel the pain, not easy. Bravo to Ray for posting this experience, life is not all roses.
Just add more silicone rtv and put all other bolts back itl work just fine
Ouch 😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱
Drill it out and throw a coil in it.
Hey Ray. Let me come work for you. I. A good welder and mechanic 😅
I hate it when two dissimilar metals meet and then bond together. I have had some luck using liquid nitrogen on the steel bolt. the aluminum freaks out and said "Okay man, it's all yours"
Just take the pump off drill out the rest of the bolt and extract replace and reuse gasket if it’s new and never been crushed fully it’s not the worst thing ive ever seen had plenty of turbo down pipes strip out or break completely so there’s no taking the engine out. u get to extract in the smallest spot right on the firewall
When you start swearing in German you know you REALLY messed up 😭🤬
Just a shout out to all the geniuses blaming this on it being a Subaru, like this has never happened to any other car make.
Heat the easy out to anneal it.
There is a type of EDM that is designed to disintegrate taps, there might be one rigged with extension leads.
If you gave a known good motor there, a used one is a crap shoot, try to save the original.
Should have hit it with some heat
Left handed drill bits. Get some. It'll make this easy work.
I honestly believe that any “good” welder could still get it out even with broken easy out.
Just cut the water pump. Off…
My heart sank a bit watching this vid, I had hoped the ole nut trick was gonna work
Time for collaboration with eric o
That's a Subie for ya
I feel ur pain brother . Might try making more room weather moving stuff to get to it or if it has to be pull the motor out to be able to get better access
Wow, i coulda had a V8.
She needs Teflon
Sometimes your the windshield others your the bug… always enjoy your videos, sorry for the bad luck
would an impact have removed it better from the start?
Restoration Class Vehicle
It’s what’s makes a Sub a sub
Induction heater let it sit afterwards come on Ray😅😅😅😅😅
Heat
Did we almost hear you say, "Scheiße!"?
Nothing ruins your day worse than a broken bolt or stud, happens to the best of us I'm afraid. 🔧
Check out the latest from south main auto. Eric shows how to get broken bolts out.
The worse feeling ever😢
Drill out the broken stud and place a threaded stud in and put a nut on the end.😊
And this is what turns a 30 min job into an all day affair and the customer gets mad for the price and time..
Wrote under the video- metal sleeve into the corresponding hole of the old pump. Old pump back in place. Slowly drill out whatever is in the hole using the old pump as a guide hole (using a lubricant to protect the sleeve). Metal sleeve is to keep the hole straight without chewing the pump guide hole.
Do like every Subaru owner and put a self tapper in that bitch😂😂😂
There can't be a worse feeling than when a bolt breaks like that !
Big balls 🏈🏈… In your face lol
Ow
Just wave your magic wand and make that problem go away.😁 As if..
Try to never pound in a easy out, let it cut in if possible….🤔👍
I commented on the first video, the same as the title. 😊
Broken easy out was the nail in the coffin. 😮
Yikes !
Take the engine to a good machinist and see what he has to say. To them a broken easyout is just a bit more of a challenge.
It's weird I subscribed but never see any content in the shorts
🙈
That's where a torch is required
Damage caused by corrosion or failed parts should be the financial responsibility of the customer! Perhaps you could work this stipulation into the work order. Not your fault or customers, however it's not your vehicle.
I think you can still save this even with the easy out stuck in there…..
lots of ways to fix this besides throwing out the block, you got this
what would mr.subaru 1387 do?
Difference between a Subaru and tampon? Tampon comes with its own tow rope.
Oh no😫
The broken ez-out is a bummer but there are carbide drill bits available. For the future get some left hand drill bits. Those work great by starting small and drilling progressively larger holes. Usually when you get close to the tap drill size the remaining bolt will spin out with drilling.
Aluminum threads and steel bolts stupid subaru
Hey Ray Mr. Eric oh just put a video on how to pull out broken bolts how he does it might want to take a look at it he does it just pretty much like you but he put it on nuclear and he uses a torch before he tries to turn the bolt just a thought have a great day hope everything works out for you
plenty of vids showing how to get that steel stud out. mayhap you can fix it yet! (but you have to take the engine out first)
Same garbage with a Jeep 02 sensor. 3 days.
When you pull the motor drill it tap it put an oversized bolt problem solved
Its a bummer but don't panic!
Drill it out to next size. Tap it etc.
You don't need a new block.
This actually hurt to watch in the video this short is from. Everyone that has worked on a machine has this nightmare at some time in their life.
Average bolt removal in the Rust Belt.
Give it more thought I am sure you will find the answer👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
I have a similar issue but I think your problem is worse. Let me know what you figured out please?
If you would have just used the right drill bit
Could have just heated up with a torch slightly and then used a stud remover….
