2001 Honda CRV came in with key stuck in the ignition and you could not turn it past the accessory position thus killing the battery. I diagnosed it as a failing key interlock solenoid. The only way to get it is to buy entire lock housing. I got a #KS6963 from NAPA. It comes with all you need to do the job (parts wise). This is a pretty common problem on older CRV's and you see it miss diagnosed frequently where shops and owners are replacing PRNDL switches, shift cables, etc...and not fixing the problem. It's a pretty simple fix with basic knowledge and tools HOWEVER, the sheer bolt is a pain in the butt if you don't have the right tools. Watch the video first then decide if you wanna tackle it. Sorry if I left some steps out, I've been doing this a lot of years and tend to assume things. Leave any questions in the comment box below and I'll see if I can help you. Thanks for watching and please subscribe to our channel!
Those sheer bolts are designed to break when tightening. I know in the factory Service manual they make it seems so easy.
I would give this a hundred thumbs-ups if I could. A word to those contemplating trying to remove the assembly without dropping the steering column: don't. I tried that and ended up having to drop the column anyway to finish the job after expending much needless effort and inventing new cuss words. I would have been much better off doing so to begin with. Don't let all the unhooking scare you, it goes back together more easily that you would imagine, and the column is very easy to lift and align. Also, the Honda connectors separate much more easily than is typical for automotive connectors. Go for it!
he reminds me of me how i would be
great job
My god what a mess
Doctor O 😁
A former friend of mine talked me into buying a Honda and then after I got it he told me to trade it in at 60k. Wow I can't believe that Honda did not require you to buy the entire dash board. HONDA = JUNK !
ObAVE: "Tighten it until it breaks then back off 1/4 turn."
Bro I wish you would have showed it step by step like Chrisfix videos. And get a Chris fixed camera we need close up step by step
You are the MAN !!!
Dr O? Ha, wow this is old! You're new vids demonstrate how far you've come. You are helping so many with your generosity! Not many would share your hard earned knowledge so freely
Flat head and hammer is how I removed them
good job
Please i need your help! I pulled out the O/D Button, and now i dont know how to plug it back in. Plese help me
I had something similar on our '04 honda pilot. Key would slide in and out but wouldn't turn in the cylinder. I got the whole assembly but Instead replacing the big thick wire bundle I just used the old one already installed. Had to get a professional lock smith to reprogram the new key. But other than that it worked like a charm.
You've come a long way from here….but now it's the same great content with a better mic…👍
Hi erick i am working on my 2001 crv right now… what happen is i turn the ignition on but wont start no crank but sometimes the engine turns on. i already take out the starter and test on the battery and it works fine, and the fuse is ok now my 2nd step is the ignition switch bcuz we are using a duplicate key for awhile. That might be the cause. Any other suggestion that you can give? Thank you so much.
The old hondewi slogan, Honda, we build them simple. Now that is just a slogan. Ask a mechanic!
Always a pleasure and a learning experience watching your videos
Your assumptoin that getting the plastic off is trivial, is incorrect. That is the hardest part ! Once the plastic is off it is openly obvious to see how to unhook the wiring, and remove the bolts. But they hide their methods for holding the plastic together and on the column. I would love a video showing nothing by removing interior plastic trim to get at stuff.
I dont think I was a subscriber at this point.
You have done some very great upgrades to your videos since this! I thought the key was stuck in the old ignition?
i had one of these cars. added a passenger seat arm rest. haha
I changed one of these today in a 01 Honda CRV. I got lucky I didn't have to take the steering wheel down once you get that break off bolt out I was able to reach behind the column with a pick and push the button down and just pushed it right out and put the new one in.
Which size strip fashion of socket did you use
Napa – not a sponsor 😂
Love the excellent video quality in this early video.
Fun to go back and look at early videos and note the evolution of SMA (and the grey in your beard!)
This is where you start becoming more confident in making the videos! Even cracked a couple jokes at the end! Nice to go back and see the progress. 😊
You go, Eric. Done this. Intimating., doesn't matter. We go. Love this.
that old key came out pretty easy.
something is making rude noises at the beginning.
What the hell is the point of the sheer bolt.
Great Video! Sure is a lot of stuff in that column area! The whole assembly has to be changed. Makes it easy but expensive.
i wonder if mrs o was camera women
You need to bring back the full frontal intros!
WOW! You were very serious back then……meaning, you didn't have a funny side to your very professional side. You're one of the best mechanics I have ever seen, esp. in the diagnostics field. Keep up the great work and keep the videos coming.
This was a very short video by your standards. I don't mind that they are long its like watching a documentary with information that anyone might use repairing anything. The part that I enjoy the most is when you are diagnosing the problem. It's like reading a very exciting novel because neither you or I know exactly where your poking around is going to wind up. And the mere mention of your thoughts on the matter just makes the plot THICKEN. Very entertaining, thanks for putting these vids up.
Hello,
My HONDA CR-V engine auto turn off during drive and not again starting at the same time. I have to take wait about 10-20 mints for again start. I am facing this issue 8 to 10 time per day from last week. I'll subscribe to your channel, do likes, views and share it to others. Can you please help me, how to deal with this issue?
My ignition got stuck with the key out. I went into the gas station for 2 minutes i came out and it wouldn't turn. It finally came undone and i made it home. Then it wouldnt turn at all without beating the key with a hammer. It wasn't hard to fix though.
Thanks for the video on how to get the bolt out which came in handy. The only problem is I have the same thing happening where it won't start and the key gets locked in ignition until the power supply is cut off from the battery. Unless I manually release the column shifter it stays locked. I did this to see if it would start in neutral. Any ideas?
Thank you, this video was very helpful.
Any chance of the airbag being able to deploy?
Awesome! This is like SMA's first album or something. love it!
I can accurately gauge which year your videos come from solely by the mic level, ambient noises, tone/seriousness, and word count. Love how your on-camera style has evolved since 2014!
Look at this ol vid
why no jeep hat :))))
I bet that part cost a lot if its a factory part
how do you find power door lock relay fuse and location for Honda cr-v 2000
i used this video as a guide and i must ty.. but when it came to remove that pain in the rear bolt.. i used a #8 1.25 coupling nut and a new bolt to wrench it out.. 1 minute is all it took
