Judging by the pipe strap, a plumber fixed it.

Unfortunately, the other guys didn't know to install the shield from the outside. So they shoved it up into the fender from the inside, and then had to figure out a way to fasten the filler neck to the loose shield. You don't have to say it Eric. I will. They were stupid and didn't know what they were doing. Sorry…just sayin'. You saw how easy it was to snap the shield into place from the outside.
I think those dudes need another bong hit. Man….

I had to have my car towed because it died on me, and the auto-shop said it was the fuel pump. I spent $950 at my local autoshop. Two days after picking my car up, I'm getting gas and I noticed the door to my gas fuel is sitting weird… and then I open it and I find the whole filler neck just floating around. (0.44) I'm having them check my car this weekend, but if they make me pay to fix it…… What are the chance of me fixing it at home? I only have the tire jack and some tools. I just need to move the plastic piece on the outside. Is this something a noob can fix?

I don't understand the 3/8 fuel line. Does the line go over the line from the gas tank? If so how does a clamp hold it together if the 3/8 line is over it?

  5. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Rhonda Koban says:

How long did it take you to replace the fuel neck?

  6. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Hola! Bill Malec says:

They put the plastic piece in from the inside, got it all put together, and then went… Shit! Left it that way.

  7. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Jeff Smith says:

My guess as to why it was rigged and didn't hold was, number one wrong mechanic to have in the stable and number 2 being plum lazyness cause if one tried hard enough one could get that neck to hold up some how ! Someone just got paid full price to do half a** work!

I can tell ya why lady, ya had a plumber or furnace repair guy doing work under there, that's pipe strap.

  9. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Bernie Patchen says:

Fuel tank removal like below or I'm thinking strut replacement. Had my wife's 2006 Sebring struts replaced and next time to get gas it looked just like this one did.

Whoever cobbed that up put the perforated strap there to hold the fuel filler neck steady to keep it from banging sthe side of the car, because it was not attached at the fill door end.

  13. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Max Rockatansky says:

Half ass jobs like that gives good mechanics a bad rap. SMA is a place to go.

  14. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Ken Mohler says:

They put that piece of plumbing strap on there because the neck wasn’t supported by the plastic piece up top. Why not install the plastic piece right? I dunno.

Use NEW SCREWS. I see you reinstalling too many badly rusted screws, nuts, and bolts. It is the only thing about your methods that causes me to doubt the quality of your repairs in some videos.

What size torx socket are you using

  20. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars paul davis says:

Pipe strap, bailing wire, duct tape and zip ties all are bad but the bailing wire cuts you before you see it. Oh yeah I forgot about the electrical wire nuts.

Eric, I watched your changing the fuel filler neck on a Dodge Stratus, which is exactly like my 2001 Chrysler Sebring sdn. I wish I would have watched your video first. I did everything right, except where you cut the vapor tube that attaches to the small metal tube that's made with the filler neck. You cut that tip off but I tried to pull it off, which caused me pulling the whole tube off from where it connects SOMEWHERE at the fuel tank. Now I cannot feel nor find where it is supposed to be reconnected to. I even partly lowered the fuel tank to try to find where to reconnect it, but could not. I'm lost. Your video shows everything, but it stops short of the [what if?] question, if that vapor tube comes off and it was not visible in the video. Can I PLEASE get a helpful answer to this dilemma???

Why it isn't law that gas tank straps be made from stainless steel is beyond me.

Oil spray your cars people. Krown is the best here in Canada (some locations in the usa too)

  30. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Jo Ro says:

This in the Great White North, i.e. the Snowbelt? 'Cause that strap on the filler tube is exactly what I'd think about doing if I had reason to be under the car anyway…..it hangs too low for those of us who get YARDS of snow.

  31. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Joe Tiller says:

The shop that cobbled that up makes work for you.

  32. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Geo Jor says:

    another good one…

  33. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars James Last says:

I bet that filler neck cost $200. Or $199. Must be black painted gold.

Those 12v Dewaults work great for small jobs. I own a 12v set.

  35. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Hawaiian F150 says:

Great video. And on the jury rig… sometimes we're left scratching something in pure wonderment. Although I gotta give out some props, at least they used something to protect the gas filler tube. Makes sense about the gas tank. No wonder that this time she brought it to Super Doc.

  36. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Nathan Grayson says:

I actually know how the plastic piece of the filler neck ended up on the inside. It happened to me as well. Somebody dropped the fuel tank, most likely to do a fuel pump. When they did that, they didn't remove the filler neck so it got pulled inside of the hole like that. When they put it back together, they got lazy and didn't put it back in right.

  37. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Hank Chen says:

Eric, what kind of Dewalt screwdriver model you using? looks powerful and handy. I have 12V DCL510 worklight, looking for Dewalt same 12V product too.

  38. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Joel Hunter says:

Looks like a junkyard fix. Got the part (as is) from a junkyard. They it in without putting the proper effort into it.

  39. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Emt Scythe says:

That cap is actually pretty common. People shoving the gas nozzle in causes it to pop through. I've fixed prob 10 of them this year.

Thanks for the video. I am replacing my filler neck in the morning and wanted to know what I was getting into. Sounds like a shady tree mechanics got to it before you did and didn't know what they were looking for as far as the leak. good thing I watched shade tree mechanic as a kid cuz now I really enjoy working on my cars. Thanks for the post
