In this video I have a look at a snowblower that came in with a customer complaint of a surging engine. Pretty common issue on small engines and usually a pretty cheap and easy fix. -Enjoy!

My new Ariens will only start with starting fluid. Use to surge new carb stopped surging now only starting fluid in to spark plug hole WHY?
Thats the nasty gas you smell mrs.o
Mr. Macky..drugs are bad umkay..
When I went to buy my used snow blower the owner stated it ran great but wouldn't idle. I said I never heard of anyone blowing snow at idle and bought it. 6 years later it still won't idle but did clear 5 driveways after yesterdays blizzard
You are a maniac. But I love ya
Best reason to keep a tube of three bond in the shop to help that gasket seal. I store engines with seafoam gas treatment. Clean jets with tip cleaners.
Good Job
The car I have dosnt have that adjustment and it's new but it surges
Eric, a lot of times on the farm when I am trying to start them in the spring, I remove the float bowl, take a round tooth pick, go up the main jet GENTLY, twist to clean out gunk, do it with 1 more tooth pick, clean out sediment bowl, put back together.
If you push the tooth pick too hard up the jet, the tooth pick breaks off.
So much for the short cut.
Hello from north east Montana.
10 miles from the Canadian border.
just drop the bowl all u gota do
Its not the jobs you do!
I have learned to be more calm in life and to use more fun words from you.
Your more than a Mechanic your a gift from above! Thanks Oโs
I live in Florida. If I get a Snowblower it will probably sit till the gas turns to Zombie ๐ฉ
Great timing since the snow is starting to fly in Western New York
shouldn't that be on the lift for safety?
Nice again
Iโm loving it. Whereโs the OBD2 port though? I donโt think the Varis has the MTD software update yet though. ๐. Thanks Dr. O for another great video (all joking aside).
I do this every year on my mower, same carburettor.
I drilled out the plastic idle jet because I was sick of it blocking with dust.๐
Always thought a surging idle was normal on a snowblower….
Gotta use ethanol free unleaded too. Great for storage. I use it in my blower and generator. I also add a little Startron too the fuel too. Never had any issues with starting or running.
eric watch out youll find more on door step lmao
Hi speed needle adjustment.
Yup! Loved that one. And donโt concern yourself about repeat repairs too much. They are all entertaining and and just a little different.
clean the carb
Thatโs why I only use ethanol free fuel. It can sit all summer or winter and start on one pull and run like new.
I find that 90% of the time, the carb is the problem with small engines.
If the carbs are real dirty Pine Sol is a great carb cleaner, soak over night and wash with water.
Surely some has already mentioned this but when removing carb adjusting screws you run them in and count the turns until they seat. When you reinstall or replace them you run them it until they seat again and then back them out the appropriate number of turns from the seat.
Murphys law ! I live that every day.
You just gave me the incentive to fix the surging on one of my rider mowers…..
Even fixing a string trimmer would be interesting._
90% of the time itโs the carburetor on small engine problems. But,100% change the spark plug first.
Eric, I learn about from doing small engine s. Took class in school. My first project was and small engine I b a box. I put it together and it ran
I soak my small engine parts in diesel then use a single wire from a bicycle brake cable to push through the jets
The cat was using the snow blower again.
Clean out the idle jet, and if you have jet drills make that idle jet a tad bigger. It will start better. Underneath the the main jet is the emulsion tube, make sure to push that out from the throat of the carb (it sticks up into the throat), as it has many fine holes in it. We raced these for years on karts and there are many race parts for the 6.5 and up engines, but surging is usually a plugged idle jet… Eric shoulda just asked ole Ave, the Canukian, as he is the world's foremost expert on Chinesium…
Add feul stability and some sea foam. Not a sponsor. And you will not have these problems. Too much ethanol kills more motors than they save the environment
If Eric can do it … I'll try it.
Exactly what my Chinese snowblower does. I'll perform that service but I also like the idea of running it dry in the spring before putting it away. FYI, don't buy a Chinese snowblower unless you have a friend with a machine shop that can recreate the parts that break. Apart from that, it's a strong machine that works well, with tracks as opposed to wheels.
Hey! Just like mustie1 videos. Never seen you not use a scan tool. Nice.
OLD GAS YUK
What did you use to remove those studs?
He didn't run codes on that engine.
There is a gasket rejuvenator you can get at Auto Zone that helps old gaskets seal.
Thanx, now I can fix my power washer
Thank you
Would seafoam have helped in this situation?
Yeah just about like mustie1 only the mice are in the used cars and trucks at sma
My machine surges like that when cold, and during warm up unless I leave the choke on about half. After the engine is thoroughly warmed (about 5 minutes?) It runs smooth with the choke off. Is that normal, or am I gummed up a bit? I just picked this up used, so I am not familiar with it. 179cc 4 cycle engine Thanks.
here you are thinking youโre grasping at straws with videos now, and yet, I totally learn something with this. I now know how to fix my lawn mower which is been surging in the same manner. Thanks!
I have the same snowblower and it surged just like the one in the video when not choked and stopped when choked. I ended up draining the old gas and filled with rec-90 fuel and then installed a new carburetor. The snowblower worked for about 15min and then went right back to surging again!! Any suggestions on what to look at next?
