My neighbor is a DIY mechanic. He seems to fix everything by popping the hood and manually opening the throttle body and revving the engine until the noise stops. Its Belgium. Only a few generations have been walking erect although now the knuckles are hairy because they no longer drag on the ground. I can't believe that they built F-16s here, and they were good. They invented the French fry too.

So did you confirm the front left tire pressure when you changed the fuel cap? Was it a leak?

  7. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Kev Newman says:

Similar thing happened to me. I bought a used car and was having issues. Found that the dealer or previous owner had installed the wrong fuel cap. 🧐

Even something as stupid as a replacement light can be troublesome…

  10. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Greg Johnson says:

The tire light is in because of the low tire. Which probably throws the traction control light on too.

Any time there's an evap or vacuum leak on toyotas, the VSC will be disabled and TCS will also be disabled because both of those systems also run on vacuum (or at least used to), so if there's any faults they turn those off and pop up the idiot lights

I had a couple of issues with fuel caps similar to this. I bought 2, one for my Trans Am and 1 for my Torrent. Both were from that online company named after the rain Forrest that owns the world. They both said they were authorized for my cars. But then engine lights came on for both cars. I put the old ones back on after cleaning them with brake cleaner and the lights went off.

I was wondering: chinese automechanics should live something like a dream and a nightmare life at the same time: dream, because all the chinese components on a car fail constantly, so they can repair them. Nightmare, because when they see a car coming for the 3rd time stright, they say "how can now fix it?!" Just joking, I know there are good techs in China, and they can get good spares. A friend told me that in China you can get top quality products, if you pay the right price.

My truck failed emissions using one of those APS "Fit-all" cheap gas caps.
Now that I have a 2020 Tahoe which doesn't use a gas cap, I'm kinda concerned how much it going to cost to fix when the capless filler fails.

  18. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars andrew says:

don't try to save money and buy crap fuel cap. lol. or buy a honda and no more fuel cap required.

  19. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars CNC295 says:

When my 07 Cadillac had that code the Cadillac dealership in Vancouver Washington wanted to charge me over $3200 for repairs after charging me for a $250 diagnostic fee. I drove the car home and my buddy came over and said well let's take it to my friend who has a scan tool. He's a retired mechanic. His friend checked the codes and said that it "looks like a loose fuel cap. When was the last time you got gas?" Well that was the problem. You can't trust dealerships. 5 years later runs like a dream.

What I love about evap systems is that you’re actually saving fuel with an emissions system. It’s tiny, but yes, your car literally does run on fumes—at least partially.

I had to yell at my friend whom I helped install cheap Chinese wheel bearings on his vw jetta. Those crappy bearings failed almost like clockwork within 2 months. He complained saying oem was 3 times the price I told him he already paid more buying multiple cheap parts than he would've paid buying oem. It's been 4 years since then and the oem is still going strong

Nothing wrong with an aftermarket fuel cap as long as it's actually model specific. This was probably the first one they grabbed off the shelf in the oil change section at walmart without looking at any part numbers, assuming they're all identical regardless of make.

You know, due to inflation, I was going to buy a gas cap for my car off Amazon. But changed my mind. So I coughed up $44.00 for a omegas capfrom dealer. You know IT WORKED! The engine light went off. When it comes to certain vehicle parts make sure they are OEM's or else you will suffer for it sooner then you think! Rock Auto, good place to check for parts. But naje sure oem!
I ordered months back spark plugs cylinders.the advertisement said OEM. I bought! Surprisemthey were not OEM. But made in China, and I sure said one. I sent back same day delivered with pictures. Got my money back. Sparks plugs from dealer. Better safe then sorry

  54. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars perry8181 says:

I get the stop cheap parts. I go middle of the road on most aftermarket "consumable" parts. Rarely OEM but on some items it's the best choice. Debating with myself on my valve cover at the moment. Nissan 2.5, 02-05 has the spark plug tube seal leaks. Hate that they just won't sell the tube seals. (Like nobody but the factory could permatex in new seals.) Nope gotta buy a new valve cover. Aftermarket ones scare me with the stupid cheap price. But the OEM price seems so ridiculously high. There seems to be no good middle choice.

Why can't the aftermarket get a simple thing like a gas cap right? When the gas prices went through the roof, my sister bought locking caps for her Tundra and CRV. Exact same cap for both. Both threw an EVAP leak code. Both caps leaked. Good thing she didn't throw the old caps away. Told her to look at the bright side. Chances are if someone is going to steal your gas, they would punch a hole in the tank, not siphon it out. 😈

  60. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Jim Meade says:

Several years ago, I forgot to put the filler cap back on my VW Rabbit after filling the tank. When I pulled away from the station, the engine had less power than normal Somehow, I noticed the filler door was open, quickly went back to the station and retrieved the filler cap, which I had left on top of the pump. Engine power was fine after that.

  61. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars SincerePain 8603 says:

I learned that the evap system is the cars way of utilizing the evaporated gas fumes by siphoning them from the tank and feeding them to the engine rather than expelling them to the environment and polluting.

(Edit: I work at a part store and watch these now and then to help educate myself on things I come across while on the job, so these are actually really helpful when I read someone's codes at the store).

  62. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Hubie Casteel says:

I have had the same issue with a Ford Explorer and my wife's Chrysler 300… I had to get the OEM gas caps cause the caps from the parts store did not work… The problem went away after replacing with an OEM gas cap.. I did smoke the EVAP system to make sure I didn't have a leak elsewhere in the system.. I do order my parts sometimes on line but I only order from OEM sites..

  63. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Ben Tews says:

O o o is sooo bad about selling Chinese made cheap junk parts. Worst of all the chain stores… I had a Suburban with a bad window switch. Customer asked me to install his part, which I do, but with the CLEAR understanding that if their part is faulty, they pay labor every time I have to do the work. It took 3 switches to get a decent one, and after six months, the bulbs are already faulty in the "new" switch. I told him to go online and buy the AC Delco switch.

  64. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Backseat Politician says:

I had a gas cap issue with my current vehicle, a Hyundai accent because the old gas cap couldn't click when it was put on. The car had trouble starting somedays and somedays it didn't, it was totally random. Sometimes letting it sit for a few minutes after trying to start it would let it start. Once I got a oem one the problem went away.

  65. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars I'm Just A Dave says:

Super short one, but some important information that people should know! Most wouldn't think something as simple as a gas cap not sealing properly could cause all those warning lights and disabled systems!

  66. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars J Jack says:

Toyota SCAM….scare you to the stealership by turning off a safety device the VSC with the Christmas tree lights. Pretty shitty way to scam you and the NHTSA refuses to honor Americans safety.

  67. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Curtis Gomes says:

Had that same issue on my old Toyota T100 P/U. I saw that the gas cap gasket was cracked and very probably leaking. I bought a cheap Stant after market gas cap and it was not even close in design to the OEM model. The gasket on the Stant cap, however, appeared exactly the same diameter and thickness as the OEM cap. I switched out the rubber gaskets and used my original cap. Everything was fine. Codes gone…

I have the same code in my Corolla and I replaced the gas cap with one from the dealer, cleared the code and it returned several weeks later. I haven't had time to diagnose it so I just clear it a few days before inspection and It stays cleared long enough to pass. 89. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Steven Pitts says:

This is one of those codes that can have multiple causes. My Silverado threw this code a couple years ago and after ruling out the gas cap and fuses I found the cause to be the evap canister solenoid. It had gone bad and the evap canister valve was stuck in the open position, aka the "evap leak". Replaced the solenoid, cleared the code, and it never returned so I assumed it was a good fix.

I've worked for a few "suppliers" for companies that outsourced parts & assemblies for major manufacturers. These parts & assemblies were originally made in house, then outsourced. Would those parts be considered OEM in your opinion?? I've bought a few parts from Amazon& will probably continue. I know some Japanese car companies have factories in China, also Mexico & other countries. Same thing with local parts stores-parts made all over world. Also keep in mind, all those OEM parts broke or wore out at some point. Car parts are crapshoot, even high dollar stuff have defects sometimes.

I had a Toyota and one rim would not completely seal to certain tires. I don't know why. Never figured it out. One set would be fine, no leaks. All tire pressures were consistent. Next set of tires, same brand, same dealer, that one rim/tire would leak down considerably more than the others. Next 2 or 3 sets of tires, no problems. Then BAM! Air would magically disappear out of that tire/rim.
