This is a 2002 Pontiac Firebird with the GM 3.8l 3800 Series II Engine. This vehicle came in with an large oil leak on the engine and an oily substance in the radiator. The antifreeze was mixing with engine oil. The problem is common with this series of engine. The lower intake manifold gaskets deteriorate and case coolant to leak into the engine oil, oil is also allowed to contaminate the cooling system resulting in the fouled coolant and soft radiator hoses. This is multi part repair and is somewhat difficult in this particular car due the firewall and wiper cowl location. We will remove the intake plenum and lower manifold valve covers, and the engine accessories such as alternator, belt, and the tensioner. In this case the belt tensioner also has a heater core bypass built into it so there is engine coolant in the belt tensioner as well. Part one will be the teardown, part two will be engine assembly and the final part will miscellaneous assembly, fluids, cleaning and final inspection. This video is part two of this series. As mentioned in the video this vehicle was featured before due to catastrophic A/C system failure. See links below for all past A/C videos.

I am 3 days behind. Need to do a Rays show binge…. need a cold beer or an old fashion drink.
Ray u r correct.. u can't make everyone happy- just be sure to make the Wife happy.. 😅 because she knows where u work 😂
Yes, for me, under 45 minutes (closer to 40) is good. 😉
Hi Ray-I’ve been meaning to ask you about your experience with brake clean. Have you ever had an issue with brake cleaner reacting with different plastics under the hood?
I was using brake cleaner to clean out old grease from a bearing slide set, and some got on a 20v battery and the charger for it nearby and it immediately reacted and started melting the plastic on both where it splashed and the smell of melting plastic was awful.
Just curious if you’ve ever had that happen. Love your videos! Fan from the beginning.
I love the new Burt Bacharach music in the background.
Are the new manifold gaskets any more improved or heavy duty to the original ones? It seems like typical failure point and easy street creed for a company to improve on them (looking at you Felpro).
Are you playing this music in your shop? It is killing me. Stop the madness.
Heh the new background music is makin me sleepy 🙂
Feels like someone is playing Minecraft in the back.
Love your content Ray!!!
As Boss Ros is to master painter
You
Ray is master technician!!!
Love the updated formatt!!! Be blessed!!
Great video
Great video Ray. So many snowflakes crying about the music so don't stop using it.
I know I’m late to the party, but that Darth Vader “good” after cleaning made me think that he should use a lightsaber sound when he takes the break clean can out. I know he used to use a sound for it already. Just a thought though
Please please go back to your old way of editing your videos.
As everybody else said, please quit with the music ray. put the shop radio back on.
Nevermind I eat my own words u did lube the valley I hadn't watched that much of it yet
I would do the same exact thing as you but just spray that engine valley lifters and pushrods with some of the engine oil after its all super dry with the brake cleaner then wipe the gasket surface off one more time so that when it starts first time she's lubed right up. Might not matter though idk just a thought
I wonder if the music is there to ease up on content warnings when the mic picks up the radio playing copyrighted music.
i can see that you have a working parts washer machine (finally)
hoo hoo🎉 😂
Rays been working on his camera skills today, getting good at that!
The meditation music is also a change from the normal, hope no unhappy customers are causing you additional stress my man.
I do love the brake clean shout ANOTHER. Then the throw across the workshop floor.
Interesting choice of background music……way too soothing🤣 thought I was watching my dentist work on his car😜😁
Like the 2x speed up of bolt tightening, etc. Plus, the Alvin and the Chimpmunk imitations are fun too.
What is the rubber strip for that is on the front and rear intake gasket? it looks like its just hanging out in the breeze.
You should have gone 100% Bob Ross on this one. The calm piano in the background, the soft whispers, you should have called it a Happy little gasket. Then described how it doesn’t like being alone so you add a happy dot of sealant.
Did someone make a claim on your videos because of the popular music playing on the radio?
That leaking gasket made a mess. Are you sure that the bottom end of that engine still has bearings?
I'm waiting for the little Mr Rodger train to come out.
Have been watching and liking your channel for looong time. Keep being unsubscribed almost every other posting of a new video???? Just want you to know this is happening.
What's with the funeral music 😢😢?
Definitely ditch the piano music. It makes for a displeasurable experience for me as i dont particularly like missing anything due to naptime. The commentary and symphony of the tools are quite enough.
what's going on with that music? is there a bet going on? some quality trolling? a dentist office? Bob Ross tribute?
Ray must have had a copyright infringement notice to subject us to this horrid elevator music
What's with the music sounds like lift ( elevator) music 😂
where is part 3?
did you remember to take the paper towels out of the intake runners on the head? i got an engine once for free because the guy forgot his rags in the intake runners and couldn't figure out why it wouldn't run. after I fixed it I sold it back to him for the price of the parts.
😆What's up with the elevator music? REEEEEEEE! 🤣 Are you trolling us, Ray?
I figured it out. You remind me of Bill Harder.
🇺🇲👍
Geez what a lash up of seals , no wonder they like to leak.
I’m sorry Ray but the back ground music is horrendous. If i wanted to fall asleep i would pick this. But i don’t i want to watch the video. Good job.😂
love the content and the new music keep up the good work
This music and the vibe I got today is the "Bob Ross" of Automotive is Rainman Ray…
You must have the patience of a saint, the memory of an elephant and the poise of a ballerina to work on that engine! What a job. Well done.
in-depth detail….thanks Ray
Have you started doing a music overlay?
What's up with that horrible background music?
You used to have good taste in music, this sounds like a -80 french piano-porn thing…
I need this done on my grand prix gtp I wonder what this costs?
Is that Wife Unit playing piano in the back ground? It's just like Bob Ross! Happy little 10 mm bolts go here & can't forget you; big tall one!
Really man I love your work you’re the coolest guy. I’ve been watching you since you were in the shop and you moved to your own please and I was so proud of you. You are the coolest guy like your sense of humor and those who give you a hard time not mine you are unique name. You both are a cool couple love watching your bowl. Nelson from the Bronx love your work
That counter-balance shaft is a real piece of engineering! I think you like using Brake-clean because you get off on the fumes!(;<) What! No port matching on the intake? So- Don't install the end seals until you are ready to place the intake on?
That engine is one of my favorite engine
Yo Ray, what's with the elevator music though out your vids? You never used to put music in them before. Why the change? Reminds me of the TV series of Battlestar Galactica (2000's) – that has too much piano in it too! Keep up the great work and videos Ray, just bring back the 4 non blonds.
Great work Ray I'm loving the Bob Ross style🎉
Either Lauren or Dave took up piano playing!
I have the supercharged 3.8L in my Grand Prix and I don't think it's ever been resealed so I may want to add that to my list of things to check out.
Nice job ray cant wait to see it alive n well again! Thanks ray!!!
Hi Ray I 'am a huge fan, and just want to say you did one Hell of a awesome job on this one. I really enjoy your channels Great job👍👍👍👍
I hope he did not forget the two 10 mm bolts on the right side of the upper intake…Otherwise, great video. Dont like the piano. Just switch the shop radio on so we can listen to some cool music.
🤠👍
Please lose the piano.
Like the light mode of music in the back ground great repair another job of the list .❤
Good video Ray. Music is just fine
What's with the elevator background music 🎶
a great video yet again Ray, but please drop the background music. it detracts from what you're saying and doing.
Howdy Ray, While watching your video I realized that there was background music playing. Yesterday it was a soft jazz type and today it's a muzak type of thing. I'm not opposed to it… just different and unexpected. Stay safe!
Please lose the elevator/hold music! It's horrible!
You my friend can think outside the box. So very many people and techs that I have come across over the very many years just cannot do this. Just has to be the book or nothing, or in their closed minds they are scared to take a short cut that's perfectly acceptable. You have a lot going for you, your chosen talent, your own shop and have a ton of experience and most of all an honest approach to your work. So continue to ignore all the nay Sayers and and the itty bitty nit pickers. Most of us that follow you around the world are either mechanics coming up on the trade, old techs such as myself, weekend or backyard mechanics and just people that love you for your personality and the way you make a simple job shine. I think I speak for most of us here on your channel, please, keep up the good work and you, have a great day!
Dex-Cool was the worst. I dd lower intakes on two 3.1 and on 1 3.4 also a 3800 2nd gen. The darn coolant. It is corrosive if not changed at regular interval.
just a thumbs up cause I think you are one of the good guys, thanks for the content.
The valve cover gasket sequence reminded me of the old claymation stop-motions shows like Wallace and Grommit, Davey and Goliath, and the Rankin-Bass holiday movies.
edit: Fun nostalgia blast!
I still don’t understand why you have to manually reset the digital torque ratchet?
There is no automatic reset ?
longer the Better
What is with the funeral home music
If you keep putting music in the back ground of your video I will unsubscribe
I've had transmission coolers leak too.
Are you changing those bypass elbows to the metal version? I've heard it's the best idea.
Video approved some gravity.
That funeral home Playlist is fire jk!! Keep up the good content
Who was the rat bitching about the music? Now we're forced to listen to elevator music! Copyright strikes 😂
Mechanic listens to smooth jazz and goes full torque 😂
What’s with the elevator music?
Good grief, engineered to fail. Way to go GM. I wonder how long before that job has to be repeated. Makes me glad I own a Corolla.
I reckon there are more comments about the music than about the work! About a 45 : 55 split? A slight tendency against it rather than for.
Seems to me that buying Stoddard Solvent in an aerosol can isn't cost effective, just to through it at someone across to the next stall. Save the overhead shop expense and use refillable sprayers…. Just say'n. I'ts cute to through cans at each-other but gets over done, much like GNR and ACDC or Metallica on the radio.
Amazing! A parts washer at last. Is it a HF unit and what cleaning solution are you using?
What's with the Minecraft music? Youtube getting tight on the background noise music again?
Looks like a good 4' from front of car to front of engine, if it was any further back and you'd be doing this repair inside the car……..
Serious question. What is the life expectancy of the intake gaskets? My regal gs is at 163,000. Wondering if I should be doing this. Reminder mine is the supercharged v6.
If for some job on that engine it was felt easier to drop it and the subframe to give better access, and you wanted to keep the loom on the engine for completeness, how on earth would you get to those clips on the firewall which hold the loom there without dismantling the top of the engine?
What’s, with the depressing piano music in the background. Are you trying to put your audience to sleep. Please stop it.
That beeping sound from the torque wrench reminds me of hearing tests…
Ray ,no fender covers?
Hello friend 🫡 about that background music 🤔😣!!
Please stop the elevator msic
Love the music in the back ground, better than all the talking.
You are very clumsy and u work very dirty. If u were in Europe, u wouldn’t have any business. U should clean all the parts very well while u open the engine that far. U don’t pay attention to details.
Parts washer now? You’re into the 20th century. Just a 100 years to go
Like the background music.
Great video as usual. Distracting background music, though. The sound of your tools is the only music needed.
Ray, what's happened to the sound you used to do when armed with a can of brake clean????? I found it funny. Please resume said brake clean procedure 😂😂😂
