You've always been an excellent teacher, but I sure am glad you improved the "if I can do it, so can you." Da fu!?
Eric sir you mentioned in the first video that dealer replaced the catalytic converter did they re-installed the old ones after failed attempt to repair the vehicle thanks in advance.
Good to see it ran the drive cycle great update Eric O @SouthMainAutoRepairLLC
Did it get repaired all the way? If it did I hope he is happy with the results
A P0430 can be triggered by other factors impacting the cat, which still may be good.
Thank you for helping me pass my 2002 Rav4 's inspection. I bought a couple of ebay denso that had to be knockoffs. Couldn't get it to run catalytist monitor for anything. Went to auto parts store, and after giving up approx $300, and a 10 mile drive, catalyst ready and no more shuttering or surging 🙂
Same exact issue with my 2002 Rav4. Bank 1, Sensor 1 p1135 would just keep it stuck. Changed it out now it's stuck at p1130 code and a p1155. Before all of this I been having the P0420 and P0430 errors for a while. I don't know what to do though. I'm in North Jersey so inspection is so rediculous here
SWEEET VID 🚹 👍 👍 THANK U
This video and the one it follows on from is pure gold, emmission/drive cycle problems can be a right f–cker to diagnose, this kinda puts into perspective the theory and knowledge, learned process and experience that is required to do this kind of work, kudos to you Eric O, you know your stuff and have a wealth of knowledge. Thanks.
Please help i have a p0420 on a 05 toyota 4runner but runs normal everything seems to be good
Looks like is using more fuel than normal what could be the problem sensors or cat?
GREAT DIAGNOSTIC JOB! Like you said, "All over but the crying!"
Thanks for giving the conclusion. Great video
Thanks for the video.
in the first video you said he already had the cat replaced.
Thanks for this and the previous vid. They are great resources! I have a 2002 Toyota Rav4 which threw P0420 and P0430 codes a few days ago. I bought the car last summer. A few weeks later it started running rough and died with me in the middle of an intersection! Turned out it had a bad coil, but it took a while to diagnose because it didn't throw any codes. I bought aftermarket coils and learned a lesson about using non-OEM parts when it started misfiring 6 months later with a P0303 code. Finally got that sorted and now a few months later these codes are just one more thing to troubleshoot and fix, but like you, I don't like the idea of just throwing parts/money at it and hoping something works. I have an inexpensive OBD II scanner that showed under the P0420 code that the bank 1 sensor 1 failed. From everything I've read it appears to me that would be the upstream left A/F Sensor. I'm going to see if I can get it tested. I'm hoping and praying the cat isn't fried. I can't afford to replace the cat at the moment, so I'm hoping it's the A/F Sensor, but preparing myself if it's not. I'm glad I watched your videos all the way through and saw the part you took out was an O2 sensor! That was an excellent plot twist! 😀
GREAT VID FOLLOW UP 👍, GREAT TEACHINGS… SO MUCH FOR ME TO LEARN… THANK YOU
Thank you very much. I was hoping for this follow-up. Great job.
Can u make an 04 Dodge run the drive cycle quicker like u did the Toyota?
Great job.
Is there a reason the Cat failed?
Lol your very good at this just like your brother who by the way is teaching me stuff so I can become a macanic just like you guys I noticed how good at your job you guys are and I look up to you
Did you ever try the 2 anti fouler install on the rear O2 sensors? It worked for me on the last 7 vehicles i worked on. They had the 420 and or the 430 codes. Some people call it cheating or hacking, but i call it saving customers a lot of money. They all needed inspection stickers and most last at least a year with the foulers installed.
TSB for false CAT codes was published # of years ago; required ECU reflash to clear codes….
now you broke it
Eric I see Paul Danner gave you a thumbs up … both you guys are doing an Awesome job in your automotive Education Repair videos thanks to both of you …..talk about paying it forward ……..👍👍👍👍
Hero Status!
Great video segment. You are an excellent teacher. You have a way of "speaking from the trenches" that the average tech can relate to and understand.
I am confused It wasn't throwing MIL because it was not entering in drive cyclic mode? does it not suppose to throw a code for the air fuel sensor since It didn't complete it or enter into the drice cyclic? do you press a button in your scan tool to enter into check mode? thanks for the videos and awesome channel
i have the same issue, what's left on my emission is oxygen sensors, i have upstream AF, brand new, i am curious about if volvo has a check mode, would you able to help with this?
i think the tech at the toyota dealer missed something
I got that P0420 code on my 2000 4Runner, and dropped the CAT to clean him! Code went away and started using Shell gas in him.
You have the heart of a curious and patient man. i really enjoyed your detective work. A logical deduction Doctor Watson. A+ for the Video.
Eric i dont think we could fix this one
i noticed some shops give up and then the customer or shop comes and sees you, and you approach it in a sensible way, u dont panic etc.. u have a sense of directions, and eventually pinpoint the culprid. i think maybe lots of auto technicians dont have that sense of approach, and lackin patient, anyways great video as always.
Awesome Fix. You Rock.
Amazing that a dealership with all the interface tools and knowledge at their fingertips would make such a mistake. Just proves everyone is human. How did they bill out a replacement PCM with labor to this guy? Hope they didn't hose him over to bad.
Of course the cat is poisoned- because that "regular" O2 sensor has been dumping so much raw fuel in there. That was a great diagnosis!
May I suggest- that in the future- trying plain Propane as an "enricher" for stuff like this will be better. Rig yourself a nozzle with a torch valve & a rubber hose with a metal or nylon tip for connecting to a vacuum line. It will make a smoother transition- without stalling the engine. It's probably way cheaper, too.
Watched both videos. In fact I went back and watched them twice. It's nice now u r still able to answer. Would love to c u and the Danner brothers get together. Had the same problem with a Toyota 4 cyl. The connectors matched and everything. So cool u checked the part #. Soon u will have a bazillion subscribers and won't b able to answer as much. I use WD-40 a lot and love it. Do u guys have it out there? I also have a cheap scanner. I don't think I would have been able to discern the problem. Looking forward to u using the Actron. Thank u very much for your excellent teaching. And as good as u r, ur still humble! WOW!!
I watch the first video and in that one you said that the costumer did replace the CATs! So?
Nice job brother and this is the way it goes. A cat monitor cannot complete with a faulty O2 of AF sensor. Communication is key as you also covered. I didn't see part 1, I'm sure it is good too.
To my people, you guys need to check this guy out. He is the real deal.
great work there. seems auto repair has multiple challenges. now to eloquently explain to the customer that you fixed the original problem while uncovering more costly ones. with the dishonest shops out there generating un-trusting customers, this can be as hard as the diagnostics.
Enjoyed watching the 2 videos.
It's the first time hearing about AFR sensors. I'd would've confused them for an O2 sensors.
Only Toyota's uses AFR sensors?
(That O2 sensor socket is nice)
thanks….one of the best videos on afr sensor I have seen…..bob
Didn't you mention in the 1st video @ 0.29 seconds the catalytic converter had been replaced?
on Toyota and Honda when you set up in check mode what are the differences you will have I knew 2 trips code will set a code in one trip but other than that what else you mentioned about running faster redness monitor , I do smog ed here in CA , thanks for sharing
I believe you need to change your closing tag line! You are one of the very few elite youtuber and sit with scannerdanner class of people! So, please don't sell yourself short. You may ramble just a little bit but you know your stuff and you explain it well. I am glad I stumbled upon this from Matt (Schroedinger's Cat).
If you can do it, so can I *
* As long as I invest $8000 in the the Snap On scanner 🙂
It is hard to explain to customers that the sensor was bad , and now changed , but there is still more wrong . Some understand and some do not. I have watched a few of your videos and think you explain things well.I know it is hard to do the videos and remember to hit on all the key points with out missing to say or show every little detail .I think you do a good job at it.
Wow that was like Groundhog Day all over again for me. HA. Up here we are allowed 1 monitor not ready to pass an emissions test. The dreaded p0420-30 Low cat efficiency. Well I have had quite good success on manipulating the downstream sensor to clear the code. Now if it's following the upstream exactly less chance. I found most cats are still functional but just a little low so testing inlet- outlet temp for function helps but not always right . I use a dorman spark plug anti fouler I get about 50 % to pass. I work with a lot of customers that don't have the money to replace the cat so this is an alternative and for $5 worth a try. I have not had one yet with an A/F sensor downstream, I don't see anything newer 6 years old. Not even sure if it's legal, never cared much either. Ha. Ah you probably already know about this. Thought I would mention it anyway. Great vid. Take Care Steve
Nice diagnostics on the AFR sensor Eric and a good follow-up showing the IMs would run after the repair.
Is your shop in the NYMA area? seems like a lot of people get hit with something like this when they need there inspection or registration.
