In this video we have a quick look at a 1999 Dodge ram 5.9 that came in with a no power complaint. After starting the vehicle it was pretty obvious what the problem was. However we took it just a couple steps further just to be 100% and prove our hunch. Turns out our hunch was right. -Enjoy!

Just seeing this video now. Guess why?? I have the exact same problem with my 99 Ram 1500. Gonna test it today. You do a service to us all with your videos. Your my "go to" for the no nonsense approach and the educational parts of the content as far as what we should see on a scanner and to help us diagnose the problem so we don't just start throwing parts at it. Bless you and your family.

  2. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Ronald Johnson says:

Now, that's a diagnosis. Electronic, confirmed by actual pressure testing, instead of just a visual.

You can measure temperature in front and back of the cat, if the difference is high that’s an easy way to 100% verify plugged in a couple seconds… wherever the restriction is where you see a big temperature spike… I want to say a 100 degree temperature delta says plugged but check me on that number, anyway a temp gun is pretty dang accurate…

  4. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Bill Sanders says:

Eric. I really like your channel. I like the way you always figure out what caused the problem. Could you suggest a scanner for a poor man

With the less expensive to repair emissions systems, I think I'd travel out of NY if I was buying a new car as a NY citizen.

It just started doing it to my 03 dakota.i had installed 5.9l .an I know it's not the muffler or Cadillac converter cuz I don't have no pipes installed in it yet but it's still bogging out?????

  20. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars hellofromrob says:

Great video! Tried looking everywhere online for that Snap-on S6149 O2 sensor adapter (or even a similar product with a hose connection) and was completely unable to find one that was available or not included within some kit. Any ideas?

  21. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Keith Cooper says:

Hey Eric my truck is doing the same exact thing and sounds excalty the same except I don't have a car on mine just a straight pipe it was running fine down the highway and starting doing this any ideas ?

  22. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Max says:

Could a plugged cat also cause the engine to shake in low rpm while driving? I have that problem on my 98 ram 1500 84k miles 5.2l. I'm breaking my had over what it could be since it really is only in low rpms eg 30mph in 5th gear (manual trans) which was working fine before I had to replace the cooler.

  23. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Heavy D says:

If he took the Patriots steering wheel cover off, it'd run just fine. Lol.

  24. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Roy Jimenez says:

Could this cause the truck to over heat as well

  25. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Justin a says:

So Axel Foley putting bananas up a tailpipe causing a car to barely run wasnt movie magic. I learned something new

  30. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars The Joker says:

Hey South Main, quick question. My truck is having a rather strange problem. It stalls and dies completely while I'm driving, and the fuel system relay gets so hot to the point where it deforms the relay and also melts the location around the pins. I was thinking crank position sensor or fuel pump, but I could be wrong. It seems to be a short in the system somewhere, it's my only vehicle and I desperately need your help! Thank you,

    The Joker.

  31. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Art Donovan says:

Thank you for getting right to the point!!! No long intros, animated logos nor small talk. Great channel!

  32. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Skullzoy says:

Just remove the cat and 02 sensors, waste of space anyway.

  33. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Ky Storm says:

Does this have a DTC code readout on the gauge cluster?

  34. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Rusty Nuckles says:

A quicker and easier test is to rev the engine for one minute and if the cat. glows cherry red, it's clogged.

  35. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars camaronash says:

Ah, the old key trick to find out DTCs. I like it.

  36. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars David Inguanzo jr. says:

Happened to me. Changed catalytic converter and worked like a charm.

  37. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Tyler Richardson says:

Probably the only reason Cadillac is still around. Every gasser in america has to have a Cadillatic converter made by Cadillac.

  38. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars strattuner says:

loose timing chains, plugged converters, too hot plugs can also increase the temps the exhaust valves run at,which invariably will crack heads, manifolds, valves with disastrous results,at highway speed, there wont be enough left of the engine for parts, good job eric o,superwrench

  39. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars MM Reporter says:

Just drill some larger holes and charge him for a bypass operation…. Problem solved

  40. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Christopher Gray says:

    Mr O
You commented that it was recognized that a defective intake belley pan gasket contributed to the cat breaking down
My cat plugged about 7 years ago
Since I wasn't in an emission state
    Sawsall and cat delete pipe
    Truck has 150k now
Runs fine such as a 150k truck can run
    But my question is
Is it probable that my gasket has been defective for longer than I realize ?
And do you have a video on that replacement?

  41. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Christopher Gray says:

That's why I like living in Florda
    No inspections
    Cat delete
    Problem solved

What would the next step be, My catalytic converter has been removed.

  44. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars James4wd says:

I did this on a customers Focus one time. They towed it in cause it would barely move. It had a P0420. I grabbed a drill and drilled a hole before the cat. Should have seen the look on there face when I drove it out of the bay 10 mins after towing it in.

  45. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Larry Ehrlich says:

How about explaining those terms…for example what is a "Federal" truck?
