In this video I show you how to replace the rear pads and rotors on a 2012 Mazda 6. It is a pretty simple job as you will see, however you will need a special tool to wind the rear caliper piston back in.

Thanks for the video, quick question, does pushing the caliper piston back with opening the bleeder screen damage the ABS sensor?
I watched a different video saying to make sure to open the bleeder screw to avoid damaging the ABS sensor.
why did you not crack the blead valve open.
good job except, you didn't clean the ABS sensor. this could avoid a possible abs sensor code due to debris collecting onto the sensor.

"Here in New York we usually have to beat em off" I have yet to buy a piston tool. I have always been able to twist em back in with needle nose pliers.

I've never seen or performed such a comprehensive cleaning of every component prior to installation. This is the standard that everyone should follow!
Is there a problem caused by forcing brake fluid back through the ABS unit. At least one video on this job suggested that the ABS module could be damaged by driving fluid backward.
What is the “good stuff” you sprayed in the brake boot?
Love the video quality and style! Question tho. Some sites say to break the bleeder screw open and to clamp the caliper brake hose. So when you screw in the piston the fluid escapes out the bleeder (and into a container you have in place). They say pushing fluid backwards through an ABS module may damage it. Any thoughts on that? Sure makes it simpler to do it the way you did.
You don't show releasing the bleeder valve, is it safe not to on mazda 6?
Why don't you lube the brake pads tins where the pads slide?
Why not lubricate the caliper hardware as well as the bracket?
It would be great if you ever get a chance to show how to do a Mazda with electronic parking brake. Apparently there is a way to put the parking brake motor into a service mode and the piston pushes in like in a normal caliber. If it has EPB they can be damaged if the piston is rotated. I think 2016 CX5's and later are set up this way.

I like that 3M for going over the lugs to clean the hub to make it clean for the rotor. Normally I don't see that much rust in Southern Ca, but with aluminum wheels, you have to be careful. Any buildup on the hub surface can push against the rotor and you now have brake pedal pulsation! Yuck! Thanks for the link and Great Video!

how do you know if you screwed in the piston far enough mine kept turning but seemed like it only went in to a certain point which when I put back on over the new pads seems far enough ?
Seen many mazda rear calipers have problems, I haven’t find what’s going on with them but hear other mechanics says caliper not retraction or parking brake not releasing or something like that.

Great video, first one I've found that emphasizes the importance of cleaning and lubing the metal contact parts, Bravo! Brakes tend wear better and last MUCH longer when the calipers don't seize prematurely. Worthy of mention though is that an impact/air ratchet is NOT a torque wrench.

ALSO make sure the brake fluid resevior is not overflowing as you press the caliper piston into the caliper.

My first "internet help me" moment on car repair was replacing brakes on a friends Mazda. G-D pistons won't suck in no matter how I twist on the clamp. DOH!

You can rent that piston compression tool from AutoZone. OEM part # 27111. Works great.
