Come along with Eric O. as he covers the steps in diagnosing this Pontiac G6 that came in with the engine light on and the dreaded "No Communication" being displayed on the scan tool. In this video we review the steps needed to diagnose the CAN H & L network in order to figure out what the heck is going on. He also shows the process of replacing the faulty power steering control module -Enjoy!

Hot Damn! 2005 G6. I’ve been fighting a no com to power steering module and throttle body without a scope and a thinkdiag dongle all day. Had no com to pcm completely until I cleaned grounds. At anything under 12 volts of battery it just clicks so I’m wanting to voltage drop test but can’t keep it running to do so. I’ve suspected a multi issue situation immediately as it’s been sitting a year growing green crusties. Now you gave me a way to verify the network and explained it so it makes sense. Thank You!! First time working on this type of system.

nothing to do with your repair but when I read "no communication with scanner" it reminded me of the early GM's before OBD2's if you removed the ck. engine light bulb from the dash- the ECM wouldn't go into closed loop and you couldn't read data with a scanner. I found out the hard way. You probably already knew this but I though I would bring it up. Damn good video's!!

Think it's awesome that you admit what you did!! Most would not do that, great job!

  5. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Shane Harrison says:

That was pretty interesting I had no clue the newer pontiacs had electric pwr steering

Look like your having fun under dash. Great shot with the children. Your very lucky guy. I learn from you about this electric steering system. I am new to the electric power steering system . My 2012 Chevy Malibu has electric steering.

What is the name of the part?

Hi guys, I had a short yesterday while wiring up some fog lights and now the car cranks strong but isnt starting. When I turn the car on/acc mode I do not hear any fuel pump noise so I am thinking its a relay.

Initially, ODB fuse and radio fuse were burnt but replaced but still no start.

I just can't seem to find where the proper relays are for the fuel tank and/or EFI relay to try and replace or test it.

I checked the owners manual but no mention of these relays and online I seem to find different answers on where these relays are located : I did test every fuse and relay I could find/access and ALL OF THEM tested fine. I am lost at this point and wondering if it’s Ecu?

Thanks had a similar problem on 17 corvette, who would have thought disconnected power steering would cause no communication with pcm, crazy design! 😐

  13. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Kevin VanBuskirk says:

The power steering module is part of the electric motor? I have a 2012 Buick Lacrosse Hybrid throwing all kind of codes. And just like you experienced no communication, I had to disconnect the 12 volt battery to be able to pull the fault codes. But in my case no check engine light on just completely possessed! Key locked in the ignition doors won't unlock and transmission locked in park! Rumor has it that the Powertrain module are notorious for going bad. In my case a lot of contact cleaner on those three plugs and all seems ok for now… the upper connector seems lose and I notice it was brittle. But seeing this video I'm questioning my diagnoses…

  14. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Delbert Hiebert says:

Thanks for posting this. My wife's 07 Malibu had the electric power steering make her trouble too. The symptom in it's case was that the steering wheel would suddenly jerk slightly to the left or the right….pretty dang spooky !!! Local Chevy dealer put in the new motor, total about $800.00 plus (9 years ago)…probably much more now (2020). The important thing to know with these electric steering systems is that they draw a LOT of power, so you MUST HAVE A VERY POWERFUL FRESH BATTERY !!! Our battery has become somewhat weak without our realizing it and the low available current destroyed the motor. Moral of the story….keep a fresh battery in these cars.

  15. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars spelunkerd says:

It sucks that the hardware was probably good, you had an electronic module failure that brought down the network. No wonder there is a core refund, they can simply replace the electronics and then sell it all to the next guy.

  16. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Desert Mike DIY says:

After watching this network debug video, our neighbor's chevy truck had a comm problem as well. Was all prepared !! Thanks Eric !!

  21. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Mike Chiodetti says:

You are so screwed if that module goes bad! NO START EVEN?! Great if your at home, screwed if your M I L E S from home and no traffic on the road! Should be a bypass for the network to jumper from the BCM to PCM to get the vehicle home!

  22. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Tom Christensen says:

where can I get a wiring schematic for my 08 yukon xl denali high speed network like you showed> I am having wicked gauge cluster issues, lights, and limp mode with no communication with scan tool

What happened to your normal power steering that ran off your engine belt so simple. Now it all electric you gotta go under the dash and fiddle with this thing seems more of a pain in the ass.

  27. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Mike Chiodetti says:

Wow! Great Video! $500.00 for that P/S P.O.S! This C.A.F.E. stuff is killing us. A pump on the engine did the job just fine!
On top of that, the P/S unit has NETWORKING! Isn't that just special!
Well, thankyou for showing this one, increasing our learning curve!

  30. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Tired old mechanic says:

Tell the owner to go to GM and complain. 06 steering motor should be covered by the extended warranty. I have a letter for my 06 to that effect. The electric power steering seems to fail more for women. I suspect they hold them against the stop too often.

  31. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Don Borman says:

Wasn't that covered by the extended warranty? I had a letter from GM notifying me of an extended warranty on my 2006.

  32. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Donnie Robertson says:

    Great job again

  33. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Aaron Bruins says:

So you are literally checking the terminating resistors for continuity w/the correct resistance value. You should see 120 ohms on both the H and L Can Network?

Had a srs light on a auction car before sale the auction company wanted to know what was wrong with it went to scan and no com so thought check connections to srs control module under centre console some f**ker had removed it completely lol like why

  47. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Steve 1961P. says:

Hey Eric, I don't understand something here. If this unit takes 60 AMPS, how is this unit saving gas mileage? 60 Amps has to be steeling about 5HP from the engine at the alt. and a power steering pump is about that or less, why go to all this mess at all?? Most cars will only see 1 PS unit in their lifetime and a replacement is far cheaper than this electronic thing. I am baffled!!! ???
