I don't understand why you did not empty the fuel tank to a ok level. While doing other work. And come back latter to run the smock test. Like your videos.
The one time a car comes in full to the neck of fuel is when you need it not full of fuel🙄🙄
The money light indeed, because I just pay 500$ to fix a p0456 code and the after 160 mile the check engine came back on.
Sorry for the previous comment tried to copy paste from the Kia forum. I had the same issue on a 2008 Kia Spectra. P0456 small evap leak. I tried all the normal fixes, starting small, gas cap, rust around the filler neck, valve at the back of the tank, evap canister, pressure smoke test, you get the idea everything.. every time the after a repair in short order the engine light would come back on with the same code, drove me nuts. It doesn't affect the drivability, but I was concerned if a real code emerged I wouldn't be aware with the constant evap small leak P0456 constantly on..
Long story short, I found the culprit by accident, at about 195K my Alternator failed and I replaced it and the engine light went off and never reappeared. You might say that is crazy and the Alternator has nothing to do with the EVAP, however after replacing everything else and once I thought about it finally made sense. My theory…the computer takes voltage readings within a certain parameter to see if the evap system is functioning properly.. The 4 months prior to my alternator completely failing it was putting out lower than normal voltage causing a false reading at the evap system check, triggering the engine light code.. I'm just throwing my situation out and maybe it will save someone the headache I went through.. I have an 08 Spectra and there is no voltage gauge to see if anything is operating out of normal range, only a battery idiot light when it completely fails. Might save your self some time after doing the simple stuff, like a gas cap, and rust around the filler neck.. by doing a voltage check on the alternator first checking for correct voltage output.. It's been 3 months and I have never had a reoccurring P0456 evap engine light after replacing the alternator.. hope it helps someone..

I've already replaced the cap on my 2011 Sedona for this problem. I've seen mention that a specific valve replacement may be in order, too. But I haven't gone that deep into it, yet.
I haven't inspected for corrosion/rust around the flashing, though. So I'll do that, too.

Charcoal canister was the cause of a couple of evap. leak codes. There was recent a service campaign that involved inspection for cracks and if present, replacement. Mine was replaced free of charge a couple of months ago. No DTCs have returned and a scan for codes with my OBD 2 comes up clean.

I had the P0456 small evap leak code on a 2008 Kia Spectra. I tried all the normal fixes, gas cap, filler neck, rust around the filler neck, evap canister, vapor filter deal on the back of the tank and nothing fixed it. Every time the code was reset the engine light came back on, it drove me nuts. The drivability was not effected, but I didn't want to drive around with the engine light on in case a real code or issue emerged..
Welp, I actually found the culprit to the problem by accident after a 3 months of aggravation.
The problem was a (Alternator) that was going bad. My alternator completely failed and I replaced it at about 195k on the odometer. Once I replaced the alternator the small evap code went away and never returned.. You might say an Alternator has nothing to do with the evap system, which is true but after I thought about it, it made sense and here is my theory.. The computer does a check which reads a voltage parameter to see if the evap system is functioning properly (between a certain voltage range) as my Alternator was failing during the few months before it actually completely fails it was putting out lower than normal voltage, which translated into false reading of voltage at the evap system check by the computer. There is no voltage gauge in the Spectra to see a difference than normal activity, just a battery idiot light when it completely fails..
You can say that is crazy, but I repaired everything possible before I accidentally found out it was the alternator causing the code to pop up.. I'm sure you could do a simple voltage check at the alternator to see if it's functioning properly and I would start there after replacing a gas cap to avoid the headache I had. Hope it helps someone
wish i had a mechanic around me like this guy. i have the same issue on my kia forte didnt think id be able to fix it without the proper tools…at least i see what the process is and know im not getting bullshitted when i go to a shop. great video thank you
I'm so glad to know I'm not the only one who does this. I disconnect the purge and check for vacuum. Then go to the filler neck and check for rust and dirt. After cleaning the neck, they are always filthy, I put a little silicone on the o-ring for the fuel cap if it's not damaged, it's usually dry as a bone. Easy fix for less than 30 minutes

I am impressed with this mechanic's approach to the problem. First, he has the knowledge. Next he uses his knowledge to methodically diagnose the problem. And even after he sees the rusty filler neck, he doesn't assume he has found the problem. He discusses what he knows with the customer and lets them decide if they want to change the cap. A true professional. Great work.
I have this same code on a 2010 Sedona. This is an informative video but unfortunately it's not clear what hose he hooks the smoke machine to.

After sanding I'd run a film of super glue on the lip. Along with creating a plastic barrier it will fill in the pores in the metal for a smoother sealing surface and should last several years. I've done this w/ brake, fuel line, ect… when I see those blisters through the epoxy coating BEFORE there is a leak with good results.

I worked in an auto salvage yard/pick a part and we had more than one car catch on fire and burn to the ground, as it were, and never blow up. Had a bus type camper with a propane tank on it that burned, didn't blow up. Not saying it can't but I never witnessed it happen. Easy enough fix yeah? Thanks for the video.

Hey Eric, would you mind explaining to me why you couldn't siphon out some gas with a hose of some kind? Maybe a thin one for like airline tubing for an aquarium or something? Is that too risky a maneuver nowadays? Is there like some antitheft type rig on the filler necks and what not?
Is it possible that P0456 can cause the P0420 code??
There should be a recall for that rusty fuel neck.
Growing up in the Watertown/Fort Drum area, we had 3-4 vehicles that had this problem. If the car had a steel filler neck and a small evap leak, you just sanded the neck before inspection.

I really like and appreciate that Eric O. wanted to show us definitively the cause of the problem. He did everything he could do but all the factors (like gas tank full) were not in his favor. Is it just me or have there been a lot of KIA/Hyundai videos lately? There must be a dealer hawking Sedona's to middle aged women in Avoca like nobody's business.
Man, that rust belt is merciless.
Why not just drain out some of the gas, to get down to 80% so you can run the test. Come on O, I want proof.
When it's pretty much a slam dunk that the filler neck rim is rusted and the gas cap needs to be replaced, why charge the person 1-2 hours shop time to do all this diagnostics when they could take a chance of just cleaning the rust and change the cap at a $20 gamble over a $200 bill? Worst case scenario it doesn't work and then they need the diagnosis… but then I guess the shop has more to lose not getting a bigger pay.

Great video Eric. It's awesome to see a technician who knows what he is doing and honest enough to not rip off the customer. Here's a crazy question. Do you ever run out of smoke in your smoke machine, and if you do how do you refill it?
I had a 2006 Chevy Equinox that I bought with a blown head gasket to resale. It was missing the gas cap and had a history code for large evap leap. I tried to save a couple bucks and bought a supposed oem cap off ebay and it still had the same code and smoke test showed large smoke leak at cap with the new ebay "oem" cap. This is a southern car in the south with not a hint of rust or corrosion anywhere. Anyway, this ebay cap felt very weak and would release with the slightest counter clock spring pressure. I went to Oreilley and got a cap and had the same issue with how extremely easy it was to remove.
Finally, I broke down and went to the dealer and paid 8 dollars more for a real oem gas cap. As soon as I twisted it on, it felt different and when I tried to remove it, it took substantial force to get it to release. I put the smoke machine on the system and closed the vent valve and no more leaks! I took out the caliper and measured the differences and it became apparent. There is the rubber seal and a plastic lip that this seal goes around on the cap and the plastic lip on the cheap, aftermarket caps was about .003in larger in diameter than the real oem cap which prevented the rubber seal from making solid contact and is why the y were so easy to remove.
Pretty silly that Kia will only toggle the canister vent solenoid bidirectionally and not allow you to keep it closed.
Interesting coincidence – my niece called the other day saying her '04 Suzuki Aerio failed inspection on an evap leak code. Too bad it's a 4 hour or so drive to your shop…I don't have a smoke machine.

Rust, rust, rust it's everywhere In Upstate New York I wouldn't be surprised if the seat covers started to rust after a few years, and if they did it probably first show up on the grand caravans.

I am DIY guy who works on his cars at home.Can you recommend any low cost smoke detector seeing I can no way afford a $800 smoke detector.
Not sure why anyone would use a lighter near the gas cap, but whatever floats their boat. I did once witness a guy with a lit cigarette in his hand that was on the gas hose trigger filling his tank. Somehow he survived.
