Sometimes it is a handicap to have an Engineering Degree… Your Degree is built on Real World Experience, which is NEEDED to unravel what an engineer may have been thinking when they designed these systems. Root Cause Analysis is sometimes derailed by tunnel vision and a person's resistance to admit they MAY being going down the wrong Logical Path to a solution. As a problem solver, you demonstrated that you are mature and experienced enough to Test your direction, accept that it may be more of a distraction (than the real root cause) and be professional in your willingness to back track and find where the logic may need to be "Tested"! I learned a lot from you and look forward to watching each and every video you produce!!! Keep up the GREAT Work!!! …Now about my 2017 Dodge Grand Caravan 3.8 (only 24K mikes on the odometer) that sometimes (intermittently with no codes, once of twice a month) will crank forever!!!! but NO START…. I am looking through your videos to find one that gives me ideas to find the problem… I loved your video of the Caravan where you leaned on the back seat in the folded position and the electrical system, doors, locks, lights and etc. WENT NUTS….. That is what I am hoping to find… LOL
good stuff……tough case ….. it makes me wonder if the original ECM might actually still be good…..maybe once the busted coil got replaced the original ECM might function normally again, in just the same way the replacement ECM functioned normally again after the coil was replaced

Late to the party, but running down a problem by troubleshooting vs parts cannon salvos is great. Eric, your a gold standard for being a diagnostician. Great series Eric, I wonder if the current anomaly/strategy moved from the #4 cylinder to #3 cylinder when you swapped the coil from #6 to #1. I think you were on to something with that bad coil shorting. Now we will never know….thanks a pant load Eric…lol

Way to work through that one E. I work here in Detroit for a tier 2 supplier for FCA. I have worked pretty closely with the lead calibration engineer on the pentastar 3.6. I am almost certain he would know immediately what you were seeing there. I am curious as well so I definitely will be reaching out to him about this. If i had to guess…i would say it is some sort of knock correction…at least for idle roughness prevention when misfires are detected by the ECU. After being a part of this program and several others from all the major car companies…i can tell you for sure that anything is possible…especially if it was an issue that was not detected until production has already began…or that a change in the production process has brought about…they will try pretty hard to correct the issue with software if at all possible…because of course they would have a lot less time and money into a simple reflash and software revision. This is of course why the stealerships are so adamant about bringing your vehicles in when these software revs have not been addressed. Either was nice work!

You got lost in a logic loop. Try six different ways to test including removing the intake or just transfer gas from your car to remove global lock out.

I know this is an old video but I have a theory
Maybe theres a coding error in the pcm, maybe the pcm can see misfires and will activly attempt to remedy a worn spark plug misfire buy double firing the coil in order to induce more current to make the spark jump longer gap of the worn spark plug to get a stronger spark(or to double fire the plug). Perhaps when coding the pcm they got the spark order wrong on that program/strategy.
could you use a power prob 4 and go to each injector and find the problem if you did not have a scope ?
