I'm driving my 04 matrix on the hwy, slow down for red light but not to a complete stop, light turns green and go to go and I'm not moving , car is running still yet I have the gas pedal to the floor and I'm moving like just the tiniest bit. I turn car off and back on and it starts and now I'm moving maybe 2 kilometers it feels like…I've now moved over to right lane and on shoulder and foot is still to the floor. .then it car speeds right up as pedal is to the floor so does that for maybe 20 seconds then back down to nothing and does this a few times and I manage to get to a speed of around 40., I'm just trying to get off the rush hour traffic. I finally pull over and turn car off. Give it a minute before I start it again and it won't start.. it sounds exactly like the car in this video does..after trying multiple times my car is now not turning over at all yet lights on dash are on…when I have jumper cables on it wants to turn over just like thr video and nothing when battery is off. I get it towed home where we replace battery and still same thing . I have now replaced the fuel pump and filter, switched out relay switch and it runs for half a second. I used the actual key to lock the drivers door and then unlock as thinking need to get anti theft off as new battery been put in and also rest computer and it starts ! So happy but dies after 30 seconds and now back to car sounding the same as before and not starting. We have hooked up 3 different code readers and no codes come up also check engine light has never been on. Checked air intake , by passed the ignition and not having any luck…but starter is gone now so replaced that as well and it's so freaking close but still nothing but now alot of white smoke coming from exhaust. I'm hoping that after I have watched your video that can find the answer.
Some old school Eric O vids
Very strange how it has no compression on so many cylinders when the chain looks good and no issues either pistons hitting valves 🤔 Eric O @SouthMainAutoRepairLLC
Bad coil, gasoline washed out cylinder
what do you mean by "put a trigger on it"?
My is sparking but not raising
110,000 miles 💀
"Phone rings and somebody unsubscribes"
Great video!
i swear i could see your breath in this video….! Cold in New York?
where i can find service manuel free i have the same car
My vibe may have the same problem. Tried spraying starting fluid into the intake and it spit out flames. Does this sound like it would be the issue? Hoping it may just be a bad timing chain.
The 1.8 Toyota engines usually go well over 200K- just check out the miles on older Corollas and Matrix models. I have a Matrix w 220K and it runs really good. Uses a little oil, but not much, and it's expected given how many miles are on it. Guess we'll never know what caused the failure here, but obviously the owner liked it enough to drop $2000 or so in getting a used engine installed. I've been impressed with mine- besides oil changes, tires, brakes, battery and routine stuff, I had to put in a new started and a new blower motor. When I first got it, 6 years and 60,000 miles ago, there was a code for the cat- these cats can be finicky so I put an extender between the O2 sensor and the cat, which solved the problem. I think that is pretty much the extent of what I did while driving it from 160K-220K. Super dependable. My previous car was a VW TDI, which often had something break weekly, and at least once a month. I got tired of car repair being a weekend hobby.
There went that damn phone again.
My 2004 Corolla has 151k, doesn't burn a quart of oil in 20k. Only on my 3rd battery since new. Never let me down, these engines are good to 300-400k. If it died, it's due to lack of maintenance, owner abuse!
I bought a ‘05 Vibe that was run out vs of oil, cylinders 2 & 3 connecting rods made a hasty exit out of the block. I got a used engine off Craigslist, resealed it, installed it and it ran great! 1,000 miles later the trans exploded. Now I get to replace the automatic transmission.
Do the 2.4L vibes burn oil too? Also, is looking in the cylinder with a camera a good way to know if a car is burning oil?
Eric, I love your videos. In fact, ive been binge watching for the last 3 days. Also just checked out your first 2 videos. My what an improvement.
But I would like to call you out on something if I may. I notice in this video and a couple others (Honda civic for sure) you say the compression should be 190-ish. That would make that engine 12.9:1 compression ratio. But this car is only 10:1 ish. Depends what source you reference online. So if that engine were in perfect condition, you should see 147 psi on the guage. 130 psi at 175k miles is not that terrible actually.
mine 2009 vibe only starts when i unplug the coolant temp sensor
Every time the phone rings a mechanic gets his wrenches
My matrix had 252,000 miles and still ran perfect when I got rid of her. You can’t kill these 1zz engines!! Well except maybe this one..
dad has a 04 matrix with 500000+ km cranks like a son of a bitch starts fine in the morning when is cold runs fine soon as you get it hot it takes a good 20 or 30 seconds of cranking to get it to start again any ideas
have a chance to buy a matrix that needs a engine. are there any common problems with these engines? are they a turd to swap ?
Did someone actually pay to get this fixed? Seems like it took a long time floating around shops. And with 173,000 miles. Probably not even worth fixing anymore. Only good for learning
When I was still driving a truck…a few of us stopped for lunch..about a hour later we came out and the lead truck tried to take off..(.we had left them running with the Ac on)..it wouldn't pull…it was running…but then we saw that the fan wasn't turning. ..we shut it off…and restarted it…the crank had broke into at the center (290 Cummins) …have never seen that before. .. 🙂
So what was the reason for the intake valve leak? Are you going to dismantle it? Great Video!
Eric. I'm working on my 2003 pontiac vibe. But on the top cams only one rotates when cranking. Is that normal. I don't much about cars. Love ur channel very helpful. Thanks
Had an accord and was cruising about 70 with cruise control. Accidentally knocked it into neutral and rpm spiked but I caught it quick. Perhaps he didn't catch it.
It's just low on brake light fluid!?
how does something like this happen to a toyota engine? thought they were hard to kill. seems like toyota had a recall but not sure if gm did too.
"Toyota announced a voluntary recall of 2005 to 2008 Toyota Corollas and
Matrixes equipped with 1ZZ-FE engines. The issue involves the engine
control module, and includes the potential for it to develop a crack on
the module's circuit board, which can result in the car not starting,
the transmission shifting harshly, or the engine stalling. Additionally,
Pontiac announced a voluntary recall of Pontiac Vibes from years 2005
to 2008 for the same issue."
Thanks for the video.
I only subscribed because of the phone ringing..
Them engine are notorious in bending valves.
I got a 2003 Vibe with 5spd, 270k, hardly uses any oil. Half a quart between changes and 30 plus to the gallon
I almost bought one of These but my mechanic advised me not to.
have a 2006 Pontiac Vibe wife have been driving for a while no problems on the way to work one morning it just cut off and died and now it's showing no compression have not got a clue what it could be
Every time Mrs. O comes on scene and doesn't say hi to the people, I unsubscribe. Lol
I like the intro. I have an 03 Toyota Matrix, recently hit 120K miles and the starter died.
My guess………..blown head gasket. Aluminum block and head…………….. one over heat and the head gasket blows…. No compression………….
I'm thinking its probably the Headlight fluid or windshield grease. What do you think?
177,000 is actually very low mileage for a 1zzfe Toyota motor in fact I have found with proper maintenance they are as bulletproof as engine get
Thumbs up for previous work as a truck mechanic!!
Every time you break out a new tool I start drooling. !!! lol
Compression test should be done with all the plugs out and a good charged battery, you can be upto eighty psi off otherwise
I hate waiting to see if a dropped socket or fastener is going to hit the floor – lol.
excellent vid mate well explained scopes are there any way to go makes everyone's life so much easier and saves money to the customer
Is this a Toyota engine? And is the 1.8 historically an oil burner? Just asking for clarification, sorry if it has already been asked and I missed it in the comments.
that engine is overheated
