In this video I bring you along for a little shop talk and we poke around this 2001 Caddy Eldorado Northstar to find and fix a coolant leak at the thermostat housing. Always refer to you shop manual for the proper repair procedure when working on your vehicle.
690k subs now. WOW
Just look at u now
My 205 Caddy NorthStar leak Is between the water block and the engine. I'm having a deuce of a time just trying to uncover to get the water block out for new seals. I have spent hours just searching for a video to show me what has to be removed and how to unbolt and separate the water block. Your video on the thermostat makes me think you are the MAN. Any chance you have such a video?
Early model northstars are junk
2004 on are good
what's the proper way to bleeding a northstar? I have two northstars and also hate Volkswagens lmao.
The studio has held up well😁👍 congrats on the 2k subs + 😁🙏 Thanks for sharing. Worst, early VW Jetta. Dang k jetronic fuel injection 🤕
Who else is here in 2022.
Love to find these old gems
Death Star engines
If y'all weren't so far from me i would take a trip up to meet y'all nice folks..how far are you from Watkins Glenn speedway..
Try a head gasket on that north star with the engine still in the car.
And no Sir it wasn't the easy one to do but it had to be the one against the firewall. 🥺🥺🥺
Worst job I have done Is water pump On a Audi R8 they are a pain Eric O as well as Most things on 2008 plus Range Rovers @SouthMainAutoRepairLLC
Wow, from 2K subscribers then, to today over a half million… Love this Channel…. Guess a few others do as well.
worst engine design ever. starter is INSIDE THE MOTOR, water pump requires special tools, and spark plugs are impossible to reach, OH did i forget to say they blow head gaskets every 3 years?
Nice video
Those were crap gaskets. I used three bond to glue it to the housing and a little three bond on the engine side of the thermostat.
Worst job? Owning two 4.6 N*'s.. 02' and 10'.. Love the cars but between the engineering and living up here by Eric O in the salt belt, even maint. can be tedious. Heater cores n blend doors, water pump, evap and moonroof drains, and all the emission and electrical gremlins; these cars have basically turned me into a level 2 GM tech with all the specialized tools I've acquired by doing the work myself! I wouldnt be able to own a Deville otherwise, they're almost Beamer/Benz level money pits.. These days even if you're capable of doing the work youre still gonna have to pay to program some new parts to ur car, with the list getting longer each model year – right to repair? LOL
Sorry to rant, and bless you and your family! Keep up the videos, power probe and oscilloscope work would be invaluable Eric, never too many videos on electrical gremlins!!
Funny watching your 2015 video and it's now october 2021..you're a skilled mechanic and a great teacher..yes I've worked on a northstar..99 caddy deville replaced a water pump, and even tougher job on that caddy was replacing a solenoid in the tranny with no room to remove the pan..I had to drop the cradle down far enough to get the pan off and finally got to that solenoid..what a pita ! Scary job too, the car wasnt 6 or 7 yrs old and my buddy's baby..I kept him away from my driveway for over a week while the cradle was sitting on cinder blocks and tranny exposed..job went well and problems solved , all was good until he lost control of the car coming off a ramp during middle winter and stuffed the nose into a solid snowbank..ouch!
Reason I started watching your channel is because you make sure that’s jobs are done right, no matter what car you show I enjoy and learn new things everyday, btw I put 2 Subaru’s motors together from block up one was 1990 Legacy other was 1993 Loyale wagon, yes they ran perfect afterwards😎💕😁
i liked eric thank you for what you do
Worked for VW /Audi for 30 years…… Audi quattro and VW Syncro/ 4 motion clutches – transmissions all the time!! I really enjoyed the electrical work the most though!! 😁😜🙃 Maybe i just like pain!! 😁 I enjoy your videos and stories………especially now since i am retired after 40 years of car service to the Blue Ridge of Virginia!! Cheers!! Keep up the good work! I appreciate your honesty with customers and viewers.
1996 Buick Skylark with the big 3.1v6. Had the classic intake coolant leak. I got it probably 90% tore down, and realized I wouldn't have time, tools, remaining stamina to get it done. So I put it back together, and sold it to a fella for $100.00. The car had 88K miles on it and was otherwise spotless. Seemed like every step I took led to a more nightmarish step.
I'll stick to brakes, shocks, CV axles and clutches. Much easier.
So, I am watching this video because I just bought my neighbor's 1998 Deville with the Deathstar in it. Took me a minute, but I realized I watched this video already…six years ago. Thanks for the great content Eric O'!
like your show, another problem with north star is water boils at a certen temp, now even with coolent it will reach a point it will still boyel an you do not want water boil in an engine, it creats bubbles an when that happens it causes a air block creating over heat, water will not move.
i increased the by pass tube also to prevent clog, seem to work,,with orignal bapass tube where it connected to block on driver side of engine got cloged at block entrance, founf that when biue back with air, heared it pop.
Question, heat is an enginens worse problem, now here me out, the north star is known to have a heateing problem, born with it, so thinking maby t stat to long in its socket, maby a shorter t stat would help solve the over heat problem, say a t stat for a gm engine like a chev 350 v8, thinking the t stat for north star to long creating to much tenison on t stat valve not letting it open for enough or soon enough , have one of these motors an i like to run cold t stat in summer an a 190 in winter, . just a thought, i know from experinse the cooler in summer the better when ac on, thanks
Sherlock, in his early days LOVE IT.
SHERLOCK (Mechanic of Auto) show starring Eric.
Many thanks from ALL your viewers Sir, when your car needs to be repaired and you want to or have too , the fix is on one of his videos or you should at least SEE what your up against and how to REACH said repair. Just watch and find out.
I have a 99 Cadillac El Dorado and the engine goes from C to H in about 10 minutes or so… so I’m forced to pull over…the check coolant indicator has turned on.
Just make it hot fool lol that way it’s collapsed and you can just set it in there
Have you ever done a video with doing a starter on a v8 northstar engine? I would love to see peoples reactions
Well he lucked out this time, just wait till next time when he is told the engine has to be removed to replace the metal lines between the fire wall and the engine from rotting out. I did my 99 without doing that , you get some rubber hose and re route it . Then I got rid of it and so long Gm .After 3 4 years there just a big money pit.Oh there was a number of other problems as well. This was my dream car back to the 50s what a dis apointmen .love your Chanel , wish were closer to me you would have a new customer. PS your are like700 miles away.
Actually finishing a engine swap in a caddy with a north star lol. I didnt take it apart but i put it back together…
You mentioned your up to 2000 subscribers at this time. Your now officially over 500k subscribers. You may not realize it but people enjoy your work. You have personally educated me a bit and I have utilized some of your methods with great success. Thanks for sharing your life and knowledge with us. It has impacted me personally in a positive manner! Thanks again good sir!
Witnessed a buddy mechanic peel off the layers to replace the clutch on a Mini. Hours of entertainment just to get to where the clutch is located. I really hate Northstars by the way. Over engineered p's o s and under engineered p's o s at the same time!?
Check the two speed fans. I had an 01 Eldorado. The low speed is probably bad that will cause damage to lots of parts getting too hot.
My worst job ever was replacing the heater core on my 1991 Corvette. Spent 8 hours getting the heater box screws and getting crap out of the way and 6 hours putting it back together. It was a nightmare.. I found doing the heads on it to be so much easier than that damn heater core
It’s directly related to never buy a pig in a poke
Worst job, water pump PT Cruiser
"The cat's in the bag" is from the old sailing Navy when sailors were punished by being flogged with the cat o' nine tails. When punishment was over, the flesh and blood were cleaned off the cat, and it was put back in the baize bag where it was traditionally kept. It means the job's done. It's opposite saying is "The cat's out of the bag now!" which means someone's gonna get it.
Replacing the starter on my 1964 Mercury Comet…took all day the wiggle it thru all the mess around it…took 4 hours to get it off ans 10 minutes to put the new one on..!!! Bunch of High Schoolers…!!
As soon as I saw the title, I thought we were headed for the good ol' head bolts stripped on a Northstar. Wonder if Eric would take it on or not. Most everbody else in the profession won't touch them.
Eric O. shouting out to Harbor Freight radiator tools, not a sponsor. Love the OG videos, Eric is a class act, love his tips and methods.
2k subs! Lol he's now at 506k subs. It's December 2020
Great video Mr owe 👍
I learned a thing today, even I , a backyard grease monkey at 61… Very personable guy. Kind you want have a bear with and be besties… Thanks for humorous commentary…
500k 😀🤟
Because ur a good teacher thanks man for working on that classic. The eldo will always be a classic think about it.
If you are a broke-a$$, don't buy a Cadillac.
Sold a gentlemen 2 gallons of antifreeze when I worked a sears back when I began working for change the store manager gave me harry heck for selling antifreeze to a fella in a 67 vw beetle I tried to explain the antifreeze was for his vw gti diesel
I cant believe it still has the original northstar engine in it usually their swapped out
No but I have helped a few vets put cats in rubber boots prior to their being repaired aka fixed
