In this video I show you the diagnostic procedure I used to diagnose an EGR valve on this high mileage 1999 Honda Odyssey Van. I admit, I thought it was going to be a short one because I assumed the valve was seized up but the van had a different idea for me. I think you will like it!
how often would you get the egr code? just wondering cause i havent gotten one
Interesting how it's just all over the place and it is dropping out and then coming back 🤔 makes me think the Egr valve is Sticky Eric O nice Find On the Egr valve being Good and the egr position Sensor being bad It could of tricked you if ya Only did the stall out test very nice Diag and Find On the drop outs @SouthMainAutoRepairLLC
This was extremely informative. Thanks for the lesson.
Very impressive electricity skills, I’m impressed and inspired to learn more this coming from a person who makes Electricity!

Best wishes and nice job !
Scotty says the real problem is that this is not a Toyota.
Hi Eric, love your videos…learned a lot over the years so thank you. Btw, you're rubbing off on me, the other day at the Doctors office a guy asked what kind of car I drove and I said a "Hondoo" lol. Keep up the good work!!
Great Video, very informational.
Why you should not use a test light on a computer ground?
My Honda Fit threw a P1491 yesterday, but the cause was easy to find. I'd wondered if an EGR sensor fault might be causing hesitation at 1500-2000 RPM, and I had unplugged it with the intention of hooking up a power supply and scope to check that it all works as expected. Of course, I ran out of time, got distracted with other things, and forgot that the EGR was unplugged when I later drove the car! After about 10 mins driving, CEL came on, pulled over, P1491, ohhhhh I know why that's happening! 😀
Hmmm might be the same issue on my 2002 ody, i have spark knock at around 1,500 rpm under light throttle, car doesnt like to maintain a particular speed on the highway unless i give it more acceleration
I got Odyssey 2000 when i driving in the freeway and go fastes and take high road
or bridge Lost speed i don't know what's goin on thanks
Nice video! Where did you learn electrical system diagnosing? I’m a student and took an electrical systems class last semester and am still completely lost when it comes to electrical systems. All my other auto classes have been relatively easy but I will need to dive in deeper on this one.
THIS is why I watch this channel. I would have thrown a new EGR valve at this code without thinking about it – this is a real professional.
Great videos.., thanks
I wish I could find someone as detailed as you. The parts cannon only goes so far.
This man may just be the best mechanic ive ever seen . No bs
This made my check engine come on yesterday and it was running rough to now the check engine light has gone off and its running like a kitten . Every mechanic i try to get it fixed they give me the run around and dont seem to want to do it!
Nice video, though I'm not entirely convinced by the "regular old Joe" thing. But lets assume you were, and you only had a multimeter. Could this condition be diagnosed?
I'm in that situation with a OBD1 Honda Accord. Was coked solid, but cleaning hasn't made the CEL go. EGR solenoid and engine responds to 12V jumpering. Maybe next move would be to supply 5V(either from car or from an external supply) and see what the signal voltages are (though IIRC you said theres no published spec.)
I'm quite reluctant to touch any computer controlled circuits though
So long story short your replacing the egr valve. 👍 but, very informative video on testing the egr. You are right, could have just been a bad wire if your lucky.
a little lengthy but totally warranted. You explain everything very well and I'm not a mechanic. New subscriber.
Cool Video thank u mr O👍🇺🇸
Watching this in 2020, I can tell Eric was just getting comfortable with YouTube. But it’s actually better in a way than the newer videos, because he takes the time to explain what he’s doing in excruciating detail. For an amateur like me, it makes more sense.
Excellent this job I loved it
So is the valve and sensor one piece? You first said the valve is bad then said the sensor is bad.
This shit mind boggling man o man
I have a 99 Honda Accord 3.0 Vtec V-6 and I'm having the same problems but I can't diagnose it like you can. What would a diagnosis like you did on this vehicle would a man expect to pay ?
hi, on a 2002 volkswagon jetta tdi diesel, the egr has a hole on the side that oil comes out from, is this a bad egr or another underlying problem?
would cleaning it solve the issue?? I love all your vids and watched this one to the end !! Thank you
In reality or real life, first check harness. After that, replace the valve and do a EGR passage cleaning. Isn't it much better for the customer?
2003 Odyssey, 232,000 miles as of 8/2019… Runs beautifully but really drinks motor oil as they like to do. But oil is cheap.
Great video 👍 makes showing up at work more entertaining
EGR valve only opens when car is in drive? You said in video that you had car in gear when you were looking at EGR valve output signal in the shop? Were you applying brakes while you were revving the throttle with car in drive? Is that what you meant when you said you were going to "power brake" the car, when you were opening the throttle? Sorry if this is silly question. I'm trying to do the same test (on 1999 Acura TL–similar engine and EGR valve) while the car is in park with engine on but I think the car's computer is smart enough to only apply EGR valve open signal when car is in gear. If anyone can answer, would appreciate. Thanks.
EDIT: FYI, when I apply this test with car in park, I see EGR valve position signal (to ECM) spike up on initial snap of throttle but spike back down immediately. When idle is held at 2000 to 3000 RPM, the EGR signal stay constant 1.05 V. (Acura service manual I have says it should be around 1.2V with valve closed.)
Why not just change the EGR Valve?
Thanks for another great Video. I learn so much from you.
Absolutely fantastic video of the P1491. Very informative thank you so much.
Great Diagnostics and Video!
Awesome, as usual! 😁
Wish I knew you when we rebuilt a lot of 65 corvairs,,,simpler times, gotta be pretty intelligent nowadays…too crammed with electronics, some good and some unessasary…technology marches on
I have a 2005 odyessy that want start
99.9% of the world mechanics would replace the EGR in an instance and be done with it. But you?! Noooo you have to be honest, take things step by step, use the root cause analysis system, do the right thing.. etc, etc. There is something wrong with…. the world.
Great video
Thanks for the video.
EGR valves, do they really do any good? We know they're a pain in the ass.
I’m having the same issue on my 98 accord vtec 3.0 I cleaned the valve still having the code so what’s the fix, and also I have a 1738 code which is 2nd pressure switch but not sure the location of the actual switch.
These early diagnostic video's are just as good as they are now. It's obvious why your channel grew to what it is today.
I am trying to test my EGR valve on my 99 Honda Accord. The car does not stall or rough idle when I manually open the pintle. I even removed the EGR valve and started the car and the car does not rough idle or stall. It just is very loud. Does this mean that I have carbon build up in the passage way?
Awesome video, Eric! I am a seasoned vet but still always learn something from your excellent production! My 4 year old is starting to watch you now (he loves Chris Fix too). He now understands that I watch you for a reason. I really appreciate your family friendly approach to Diagnostic trouble shooting!
As a Shop owner I found your ice cream chat very helpful. I run into the same problems with help and hiring. Thanks for sharing that.
Thanks

Verify and confirm good job, not a parts changer.👍
Enjoy the troubleshooting
