I LOVE storytime. Can you tell me the story of 'The Country Bumkin and the Power Gate Salesman'? evil grin
TLDR; The force on your post/fence where the gate pivots, when fully opened, isn't nearly as rigid as when closed. Torsion forces will easily "bend" your post off kilter. It only needs a degree or so to make you lose the adjustment(s) you made. Either fortify your post, laterally, or add a wheel like others have suggested.
Wow small world 🌎 I live in Knowwhere'sville Alabama small world. Did mechanic work way back in the day. Not saying I'm old but I pumped gas at my Grandfather's Shell station. It was get ready… $.36 yep thirty six cents a gallon. Only had regular and Ethel . 😂 Enjoy your videos it takes me back out of highschool I was offered good money to work. So I went to work. Dropped out and worked for years in several dealerships and Service station ⛽. 😎
Sorry to say this, for a car/mechanic the gate is a lousy construction 😂😂😂
put a wheel
i will fit a jockeywheel at the bottom of gate to help carry the weight of gate the gate is long and heavy u can build track on ground where wheel must run
reinforce your gate post put a skid /ski or wheel kit on that long gate or it will never be right
I don't think those batteries can meet the start-up current in that situation. Check current. You may need a few super caps or bigger battery.
the ram that open an closes the gate is pushing the thin down — put a lawn more wheel on the end of the gate problem solved
You need a good wheel on a caster for the gate
You realize that if you didn't do what you did you wouldn't be alive to tell the tale and that every day is a gift and can all be taken away in an instant.
You don't forget life and death moments.
BTW your gates leverage is heavier than the pivoting fixture which is why it keeps slipping from those carriage bolt and strap fixture. You need something more substantial to pivot that gate on. Also consider using a castor on the gate end to help alleviate pivoting stresses.
Ray, great story. But the gate problem……..I have 30 years of professional experience in the automatic door and gate industry. System performance and reliability start with a properly working manual gate. A leading-edge, bottom rail guide roller is a band-aid for a cantilever swing gate that is not sound in its installation. Be sure the hinge post is properly anchored (in a footing, not the dirt) and the active leaf is level, plumb, and square throughout its swing path. Find a more structural hinge system. Wood and lags are not reliable. A different operating system will pay dividends. Reach out if you are interested in some more detailed suggestions. Keep on producing good content!
As others said add a wheel and I would put a turnbuckle on it.
You got temporary PTSD from the event. Happened to me after a crash and I would re-live the event and stop on green lights for a while.
Unsupported load on the other end of the gate will inevitably cause increased mechanical resistance and over time cause the hinges to bend leaving a permanent sag. Spring loaded support wheel on the unsupported part of the gate will help you out.
not interested in accident story
Where's the wheel on the end???
With such a long gate you need a wheel at the end of the gate. Any Home Depot, Lowe's, or Menard's would carry all types of carriage bolts. I would have a minimum of 3 hinges on that gate.
I fit these for a living, and that hinge at the top should be fixed by means of through bolt, or weld.
That would solve the dropping issue, also the motor mount on the fence post should be angled away from the gate, so as to reduce the force pushing along the gate causing the gate to droop.
when the gate opens the post starts to lean if you do a corner post it will give it the support it needs or you can put a soft rubber tire under the gate
need to set up a corner post
Get a backhoe and dig a mote all around your property , fill it with water and put alligators in it and instal a big draw bridge
And that's why I do not have a gate opener……other than myself! Have a good one!
Using diagonal braces will keep it level and square so it don't sag
perhaps you did not get sold esther the original remote or a water damaged unit of a gate opiner, in florida anything is possible.
Trashed our Mighty Mule and got a Ghost Gate operator. The mighty mule boards fail constantly
You can also screw the right angle bolt deeper into the post to lift the gate, offsetting the clamps can cause a binding issue
Ray, life is too short to try and live with electric gates. ALL the ones I've seen are "hobby" gates like there are "hobby" cars. "Hobby" cars are ones like BMW's, Ferraris, Maseratis and more where you also own a Toyota when you need to actually get to where you plan to go. Its the same with gates
If you have timber post they have a tendency to wont to bow over time with excess weight you'll have the same trouble over time and constantly fixing the same problem.
How to fix and not have to touch again replace post with Steel Post never have to touch again or brace timber post from the top of the gate hinge post to the bottom of the next post back making sure your brace is nice and tight. A triangle is much stronger than a square 😉
One of two things, install a helper wheel or screw your top hook in more
Enjoy hanging out with you. 👍
The human brain is a complex organ.
It can really save you in critical situations to were you couldn't understand how that happened, good self defense call there at the accident scene. If your truck would've been hit, you would've also been hit by the vehicle you were towing…
I had one of those close calls in '09
I lost traction in a snowstorm and hit a semi trailer in the left rear corner and was flung into a ditch, thank god for the under guard rail on the trailer and the soft snow filled ditch. We're all happy to be alive, especially after a such accident.
Put a roller on the gate end, and/or brace the hinge post.
fun video to watch 🙂 appreciate it man.
Just put a small caster on the end, fixed.
I agree the vertical wood post micro warps with time because of the weight of the gate. Either brace the post or add a vertical steel post. Good luck. I enjoy your videos.
Metal post with concrete base to keep from tipping do to weight, with height adjustment. good thing you were there.
Same thought: A wheel would take the load off of the extremely cantilevered gate. I'm in the market for a gate too, but have opted for a two segment gate (split in the middle) that is driven by two opposed linear actuators. I have to put up with the winter snows of Buffalo and therefore must keep the bottom raise at least 18 inches above the ground. Also, it looks like a slider-type gate would have worked well for your location.
i agree with others. screw/weld a supporting rubber wheel at the end of the gate.
Very good!!
Next day, same thing….
Man your lucky I've been stuck in my house for over 3 weeks now thanks to catching covid
Hay ray.
I don’t need to explain leverage to a time served mechanic as yourself.
The amount of leverage on your gate is considerable. Any clamps, screws or even posts will move over time. A pony wheel could help. Now pony wheels can dig into gravel and rich folks here in the UK lay tracks for them to run on.
What about a wide pony wheel that won’t dig in? You Could You make one from a lawnmower wheel, golf cart wheel or something similar? It would make a good video.
As for your automatic opener, I can’t help you there. Even If I could afford a gate I’d have to open it myself.
Thank you for the content and Keep on keeping us entertained.
The good lord was there brother is all i can say
Drill a hole in the end of the gate where it hits the ground an put a lawnmower wheel on the gate an problem solved you will probably never see this but it will fix your problem
I don't miss lovebug season one bit. Need to put a wheel at the center and one near the end.
If it was me the L piece that go into the round wood the top one screw it in one full turn then get a grade 8 nut an bolt. If you turn that top gate hinge like you was doing with all the wheat of the gate it will not stay I would not wells it if you have to August it at a later date it will be a pain in the bum have to grinding off the weld
a week is not long enough. needs to wait a good 3-4 months
Big lawsuit city ..
That gate is just too long .. It can't maintain its level above the ground at the end .. And it seems to be too heavy for the motor which will cause the controller to not open the gate .. A cable from the tip of the gate to the top of a pole set at the hinge of the gate tensioned to lift the gate end should help keep it from dragging ..
Maybe put another hinges on that gate At least another one closer to the top Maybe a screwed through the hinge too so it doesn't turn. I'm sure u don't need my advice gust throwing out ideas.
