    They did bot swell up. Some technician set the gun at 150 lbs and caused the edges to bend making them too tight for the socket. Hammering the socket on removes them easily. Seen this a lot.

    In my opinion, swollen lug nuts is a long term problem with Ford — definitely poor design. I have a 2009 Escape which had that exact same problem.

    I just replaced all the lug nuts on my Ford Escape. I went with Mguard 64012. It was a toss up between them and the Dorman Ray used. I felt the quality of the Mcgards was a bit better. You will need 5 packs (4 each) to replace the entire car. The Mcgards are top notch. No more swollen lug nuts.

    Looks as though Ford is still running with Henry's business model. Several years after Ford started mass producing car,. and salvage yards started to open. Folks could go to the yards and buy parts off of wrecked or disabled cars. Henry sent a crew out to the yards and examine the cars. They were looking for any reusable parts. If it looked like it could be reused Henry found a way to try and make it so parts could not be reused. He wanted to sell new cars. So, he designed parts to fail with in several years of operation. The two part lug nuts were designed to FAIL.

    Swelling lug nuts are very common with not only Ford but Chrysler too. Reason why because majority of independent shops and dealerships recommend tire rotation with every oil change. Heat builds up causing to swell up cap lug nuts.

    Ford lug nuts are cheap nasty chocolate toy ones you can buy for £3 each from eBay. Even a good socket and torque bar can round them off if you're not careful, so you can imagine what two or three rounds of ugga-duggas by a tyre shop can do. I ended up fitting McGards all round and never looked back.

    The nuts used by Ford are way beyond useless. Our local dealer wanted $350 plus the cost of their "new and improved" lug nuts, which were exactly the same as the old ones. Bought a new set of locking lugs with keys for $35 and changed them myself. This 2013 Escape my WIFE bought is the biggest piece of crap ever built, bar none.

    Just went thru the same lug nut drill with my '15 Focus Titanium. Some of it due to overzealous 'new' NASCAR' mechanics practicing pit stops. I could tell from the dents in two of the four wheels just outside the bolt circle after the brake pad replacement. I won't mention the name of the 'chain'.

    Had the same issue with my '08 Jeep Wrangler; a "tough, off-road vehicle" but fitted with these crappy capped soft wheel nuts that round out easily & then fall-off and could leave you stranded in the middle of nowhere if you ever needed to change a tyre out on the trails (the supplied wheel wrench is oversized if the caps are gone and you need to wrench on the nut underneath).

    Had one where the thin chrome cap came off (several of these caps on the other wheel nuts had gone missing too) and the nut underneath was rounded-out (seems that they are made of really soft steel). Try as we did it wouldn't come loose (probably overtightened & rounded-out by a tyre shop at a previous rotation/change) so had to drill & punch the stud out in the end and replace it. Got back to town & replaced the lot with old-school (but cheap) solid-steel aftermarket nuts and they work great & have never let me down since, despite numerous rotations using impact drivers.

    Just goes to show that sometimes cheap Chinese aftermarket replacement parts are actually better than OEM parts found on US-assembled vehicles (having said that, quite a few of the OEM parts on my Wrangler including the alloy wheels are stamped "made in China" so it appears that I may have just replaced some inferior Chinese parts with slightly more expensive and better engineered Chinese parts).

    I saw the capped lug nut problem on people's car when I stopped to help a breakdown. The lug wrench that came with the car had destroyed the cap, now the "naked" nut was too small for the wrench. No corrosion evident, just stupid design. A simple flat tire turned into a long distance wrecker call (this was on the freeway in the Nevada desert). They probably had to heat and chisel that nut off!

    This looks like a buy here pay here car. Tire Shine, fresh wash, replacing noticeable defective parts, test drive probably identified a “squeak”. Corner lots brings you the car, you suggest repairs, repairs declined because they are just trying to sell it on looks.

    This is stupid.. . I literally just did the rear brakes on a 17 fusion. And every single cap was swole and stripped. Lucky autozone had enough left and even more so that they had a 19mm socket to hammer on to get them off.

    There is a YouTube channel I won't name it but the person swears the bulging Ford lug nuts is a conspiracy theory and berates Ford Boss Me for pushing that one might want to replace the Ford two piece lug nuts. I questioned him about it (included a link to this video) and mentioned CTA sells oversized sockets to address the issue, he remarked it's because "mechanics are not the smartest people in the world". I then challenged him saying he was pretty much calling over half a million mechanics dummies for disagreeing with him, he denied he said such a thing and further said I was now banned from making any further comments on his channel. Pretty cool. I have never been banned from anything before, it makes one feel important somehow.

Good customers know this, and are happy to pay for quality work. And it's a two-way street… if a customer is too cheap to pay more than two tenths, then that's the type of customer you don't want.

    It's not just Ford that uses these cheap ass capped nuts. These cheap ass things are on a LOT of cars going back to the 80's. Bane of my existence back when I turned a wrench in the 90's. My Snap On extension for the lug nut socket snapped on the impact end, probably from smacking it all the years trying to get the socket off the stupid nuts.

    Man that phone ringer would drive me nuts, the cause of nightmares hearing it 6 days a week!

    But despite being in Sweden, with salted winter roads, the ones I've seen haven't swelled. If they swell in your car friendly climate, Ford must be doing something wrong.
    Not particularly fond of the design though. The caps tend to come off and stick in the socket. Which, of course, you don't notice until you wonder why the socket won't fit over the next nut. Then it's down to some desultory, poking&prodding to get the nut out of the socket before you can continue with the task.

    Just replaced shocks and struts on my ford Fusion. Now I have clunks, groans and bumping, knocking sounds coming from front and rear. Not real loud or terrible sounding, but noticeable. I have gone back over every fastener several times. All are tight and secure. These sounds have to be coming from within the units themselves. I'm worried about how long they'll last. I'm not going to tear them off and send them back unless they fail within the warranty period. The brand is well known for quality but I'm not real pleased with the noises.
