I would like to say that I'm not a mechanic with that being said I was wondering if the case wasn't damaged would there have been a big price difference between getting the replacement parts or just replacing the whole unit as you did, I am factoring in the cost of labor? The your channel by the way.

Get a riding mower or 4 wheeler and no more pushing vehicles.

Didn't seem like there was enough gear oil in that Diff.

Autopsy:, for sure very dead! Never seen/heard of such, but I live a sheltered life on auto rear ends. Ray, your are the BEST. I watch everything I see available from you & have learned so much, especially the more modern cars. I'm a late '20's – 50's guy. Thanks.

The factory I work for could be the factory that made those roller bearings

    Awesome carnage.

  10. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Bass Player says:

I would not have even torn that down, I would have just bought a salvage yard replacement. I got one for 200 once

  11. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars doz says:

I'm amazed that moved in reverse..

  12. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars marks411war says:

Wow .. great video .. I now know way more about the internals on a rear diff than I used too and I was fortunate enough to be a subscriber and get to see the other video that ya did and mention here where you checked another rear diff with out pulling the gears so great follow up and explanation..

  13. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars dutchguy1975 says:

Not even my car but just witnessing this damage made me feel sick in my stomach…

  14. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Nick says:

And all that damage is from never changing the diff fluid.

  15. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Bill Vose says:

That thing had to have been raising hell going down the road for quite a while.

I find your videos very informative

  18. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Donna Hollingsworth says:

I'd replace the whole rear axle assembly instead of trying to rebuild it. Even with a junk yard rear rear axle, I would rebuild it so I knew that everything is correct.

  19. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Cynthia Ellis says:

Your videos are fascinating. I used to help my dad do repairs to our cars.

  20. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars pcspecialistpdx says:

Oh the carnage! Oh the humanity!

  22. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars TOP SIDE INFORMATION says:

What a bunch of bull.. You could have welded the rear end back up and used a chain or belt to drive it. What kind of mechanic are you.

  23. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars John Nunya says:

Wondering if it would have just been cheaper and easier to replace the whole thing with a rebuilt?

  24. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Jaycee Combs says:

How long… you think the owner has been dealing with noises, grinding moves, to think it was time to bring it in and check on it? Hmmm..Hmm… "maintenance?"

  25. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Restore My Ride says:

They probably should have changed that diff oil 3 or 4 times. But I guess run it till it blows

  26. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Norman Fleming says:

    The horror!!!!

  27. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Garry millstones says:

Used to see axles like this all the time on road sweepers. I think they were forklift axles, the sweepers had 4 wheel steering and hydrostatic transmission. Cool setup, but required very specialised repair. Rebuilt a few, without the correct tooling or data. They never lasted very long until the customer would pay for a complete axle swap after the next failure.

Good work, i really enjoy watching your videos from morocco.
    Amazing .

  29. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Brian McSwigan says:

I had a rear end self destruct many years ago (at 60 mph!!). The pin retaining the spider shaft came adrift and the shaft drifted out and knocked the last half inch of the teeth off the pinion and ovaled out the hole in the carrier. I headed for the junkyard too, only way out. Thanks for the videos, I'd say I'm getting hooked, a bit, maybe!! Doodly doo.

  30. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars benzracer says:

  32. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Seasparrow says:

With rear ends there's no "this isn't too bad" in it whatsoever🤣
In my teens I had a 74' Dodge Charger that actually pulled the bolts of the universal caps out, stripped one whole side. I couldn't break the main nut so I ended up replacing the whole rear end. I just took off and ping a ling a ling went the driveshaft lol..
It was just a 318ci motor… I'm glad I didn't put the 440ci in it. I probably wouldn't be here today…. (Back then I could have gotten a 440 for $200 and installation for another $200. Cheap huh?)

  39. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Tim Anderson says:

If you had to guess, what was the failure sequence?

  40. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Jake Highland says:

  43. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars B S says:

We found the same thing on a 1979 J10 my brother bought years ago knowing it needed a rebuild of the rear. Opened it up to find the same issue- blown pinionside diff carrier bearing and just as in this one it wiped the ring and pinion. Sadly, it also wiped the splines off the drivers side axle and spider gear and that turned the job into a nightmare. It seems 1979 FSJ trucks are like '79 HD Sportsters in that they use a lot of one year only parts, including an odd width for both axles; narrower than the other year trucks but wider than the axles used in FSJ Wagoneers or Cherokees.

At that time, which was in the late 1990's, no aftermarket company made a direct replacement axle shaft for a '79, none could be found used, and the only option we found was having Moser custom make one which was going to cost more than a pair for any other year. He ended up reselling the truck to a nephew and buying our fathers one owner 1976 J10 instead.

  44. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Michael Slattery says:

What's your best guess as to why?

  46. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars 10 G says:

Great vid Ray, just by seeing inside I now pretty much understand how the spider gears work. I now know where the carrier bearings are and why the carrier is called the carrier, coz it carries everything. My brain finally went ….. ClicK!

  47. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Kartboarder22G says:

Suck fest for the poor customer.

  48. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Azarelle Diaz says:

Just put a new bearing and pack it full of grease and sawdust, it’ll run. 😂

  49. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Citizen First says:
