Subarus are very popular in Australia. The 'Brumby' 'Forester' & 'Outback' were designed for the Australian conditions. They were clever in filling a niche market as the Aussie made/Aussie designed vehicle market started collapsing, and there was a big hole in choice for semi rural vehicles that could handle Aussie conditions.
Given the state of the rusted fasteners, I'd have liked to have seen Ray put antiseize on the new ones. I tend to use it on pretty much anything I have to take apart.

Subaru's are notorious for bad a/c compressors, buying I second hand one is a terrible idea.
With a new radiator installed, they should have let you install a new thermostat, i enjoy watching your repairs.

With the rust that you encountered it is surprising that nobody these days, puts a drop of oil on the threads. I always do, and have never, in 59 years, had a bolt, a lug nut, a spark plug, unscrew itself. But when I wanted to remove such, it didn't 'talk back' to me either. I'd also like to see you use a funnel on the liquids. You look sloppy, spilling all over the place. You can get very nice, flexible tube' funnels at the 99¢ Store.

The word SUBARU is the Japanese name for the big dipper constellation. I tried explaining this to someone who insisted that the car brand with the distinctively Japanese name was actually made in Australia.
Have people no shame? I would never bring my car to a mechanic with rubbish all over the seating and floor. You would not go to the dentist without brushing or the doctor without being clean. A mechanic is a professional also.

Nothing wrong with used parts, but you need to know what you're buying. The only people that should be specifying 'used parts' are mechanics and others who have the experience to know what they may potentially get. I deliver for a wrecking yard, have many years of mechanical experience, and will be the first to say " don't be stupid, buy new' depending on what you are replacing. That being said, there are many parts you can buy used for your car that have no issue being recycled. Engines, transmissions, body parts, and even some suspension parts depending on mileage.
Good luck finding them new right now as everything is in short supply car-wise.
The question you need to ask yourself is whether what you drive warrants a $1000 new part or a $400 used part. How long are you potentially keeping the vehicle? Is the part something that you would consider a 'safety' issue? Lot's of questions to ask yourself and your mechanic.
Also something to remember is that EVERY SINGLE SHOP marks up the prices of parts that they order, usually to the tune of around 35 – 40%, so purchasing your own parts may be beneficial to you, but unless you know someone in the industry, you will pay retail everywhere you go, which is what the garage does…marks it up to retail.
This is where diagnostics comes in……if you could diagnose it yourself you could purchase the parts and just have them installed, but not everyone has the skill which leaves you at the mercy of your garage.

Subie’s (Subarus) are sold here and they have a great reputation as a reliable car. My only grumble is that the Hybrid Outback doesn’t have a full, let alone an emergency spare tire. They did this to accommodate the batteries for the hybrid. It just has a repair kit, that’s ok if you are in the city, but absolutely not ok when you go off main highways or onto unsealed roads.
