The first time starting usually is a start, and die. All makes, and models. Normal. It's from the batt being disconnected, and the modules doing checks on first use.
Brother, as always both informative and entertaining. I m not in the industry, but it is always nice to know what I, as a customer, should and should not do to help make the process go as efficiently as possible. Thank you!
Had similar happen Toyota celica years ago. Shorted windingโฆStarting it was like Playing Roulette. Sometimes you are a winner, sometimes not so muchโฆ
Got to love the starters of today they are so small and weigh nothing old school starters were big bulky and weighed a ton. Keep it up ray you are an amazing technician always doing the little extras for the customer you give technicians a good name keep it up
Pretty common shade tree mechanic technique to tap on the starter with this condition…. It's non-diagnostic, it's just a "try it and see if it works" sort of thing, just enough to get it started so you can drive to get it repaired instead of a tow.. The only time it's diagnostic is if it actually works and gets the starter to free up and turn, in which case then you know that the starter is on the way out, and you can drive to buy the part. Since they had to be towed in, I expect tapping the starter didn't work, so it told them nothing… Therefore, your diagnostics were still necessary.
i'd hate to be one of those "because comments" guys, but here goes! haha.. it bugs me that you're starting the car without turning the ignition on first.. always did it that way with keyed ignitions, my car has PB start and it's recommended to press the button (2x) for ACC -> ON then press the brake pedal and push it a third time for -> START especially on my Hyundai, the car has a 'checking system' delay which matters, i've found!
I have learned that a loose connection can cause that very symptom also. A loose wire connection can sometimes actuate the solenoid but be unable to turn over the starter motor. It takes way more amps to turn the starter motor than to activate the solenoid. And then after a few tries at starting the starter will turn over due to the wire connections getting hot and making a better connection because of them expanding to the heat. I usually check all my wire connections(battery, solenoid, starter and grounds) before replacing the starter.
He says looking at battery terminals that are dirty, "while I'm here I may as well clean them," that's a professional. I retired last year doing electrical/mechanical in an industry that is imploding now, and because I was alone, I always went that extra step because I would be the one who would suffer if I just repaired the obvious. Glad to see this guy has a work ethic that seems so rare now a days.
Wtf?? Donโt ever listen to chat ever again. They are going to get you fired. Itโs positive first then negative when connecting a cable and then reverse order when disconnecting. Those kind of people need to go jump off a bridge.
I have never seen Ray use a jump box that worked, but once he used two, with twice the elections and it was magic. When the customer said the car wouldn't turn off that was probably a miscommunication that the solenoid didn't disengage after the vehicle started. This is common with a failing solenoid.
I'm curious Ray, how much of the particulars of all the different makes of cars do you know and how much of your diagnostics and replacing is a base knowledge and then experience of knowing what to look for on each car where?
Modern cars make me really glad to have my old truck back. I can barely change the headlights on my Volvo but that old Chevy? It's all so simple on that truck. Throttle gets stuck wide open? Pinch the hook on the throttle spring. Shifting rough, especially from 1st to 2nd? "Once upon a time there was a little vacuum hose that couldn't. It touched my exhaust pipe and died. The end." Nip-tuck-wire-it-up. Shifting perfect now. Of course I'm going to replace it later. The reason it touched the exhaust pipe is that the original was shortened by a split end a million times. When they swapped my engine, I think the mechanics didn't realize that it was originally set up to run OUTSIDE the frame held in place by a clip, because what was left of it was far too short for that, so they replaced the length they found instead of the correct length. This placed it INSIDE the frame right up on the header pipes. Curtains.
Well done! I really enjoy watching your attention to the small stuff. Cleaning the battery terminals was that little attention to detail that so many miss these days. You were not required to touch those to make the repair but you avoided another problem for the owner by taking 3 minutes to just make sure!
Correct, negative first. Also negative should go to block, not battery, to not fry computer……says somebody with limited knowledge to the qualified mechanic
Hey Ray nice job just realized bolts might not be tight enough you forgot to say click ๐ ๐ ๐๐ป

U lost me with that duralast starter, I know it's probably all u could find on short notice but duralast is junk
but you not checked what is wrong with starter. this repair is not completed and not solved to the end
Perfectly exicuted technical instillation!
Negative is always on last, off first. whether its the battery cable or the jumper cable. As you did at the end.
well its a tonka toy
We used to use a tire iron to hit the starter while buddy turned key.
Works for months!
It is marvellous how he in nearly every instance knows exactly how to proceed in order to find and fix the faulty part.
So, is the <ahem> New Guy not the <ahem> Former Guy?
First 10 minute starter swap Iโve ever seen. Excellent work, Ray!

Had a Peugeot 205 GTi (1.9) that used to do that, but twas manual so you just rocked it and it would start.. Was uncool to rock but the car wasn't.
Or locked block

I find myself "Safety Squinting" when you're cleaning the battery post and clamp.
I like the "Race Bungee" too.

Why didn't you tab tab the starter with a wrnch or hammer to see if it is going to start.
My first three cars had inertia starters utilising the Bendix patent drive.
A simple device unlike pre-engaged starters which are always troublesome.
"Crossfited bolts are bad"
Crossfit is bad.
Thanks!
how do you not put holes into those latex gloves that you wear. I rip them just changing my oil
lol because comment section. and yes when a starter is going bad or hot you can hit it w a hammer and it may start or not
Rainman disconnect battery before doing work? Isn't that mechanic 101????

Dura NOT Last parts
Denso only for a Toyota
I usually put some dielectric grease on the terminals to stop corrosion. Great job troubleshooting

The contacts go bad in Toyota products thatโs what they do.
Cost me 1400 bucks in my tundra to have the starter replaced because you have to remove one of the manifolds.

Tap it with a small hammer!
Liked the video except for one thing: it is both spelled and pronounced SOLEnoid, not CYLenoid… ๐
Hey Rains , if u cant fix motor send it to Scotty kilmer d real camry man.
How much removal power does the average 90 degree cordless apply?
Ray how do u get so dam smart lol
Good job ๐. I really appreciate someone who takes their time to diagnose the problem and not just to rip people off. Again good job and God bless

But, but but Toyota owners say their Camry's never breakdown….
WOW very interesting super kool ,1st class great info.,, AAAAAAAAAAA++++++++++++ again great video I liked it a lot ,keep up the great work.

When light on jump box is other than green you need to charge jump box.
If you starter is going bad don't you want to tap the solenoid part of the starter and not the starter motor as a last resort?
