there is a regular lug nut under all that cheap chrome. We had problems those those lug nuts when I worked at a chrysler dealership over 10 years ago. Ew would order them in almost gallon sized bags and just keep them in our tool boxes instead of having to go to parts every time because it was such a problem.
I didn't know 21.5mm sockets existed. I've always used a 22mm and if it rounded, I rip the cap off and use a 20mm. I'm gonna order a 21.5, I think it'll save me some time.
I hate beauty caps. My grandson bought a 2004 Jaguar XJR, beautiful car, in great shape. Was removing wheels to put new tires on. He used a 12 point socket on the chrome caps and they spun on the nuts. Thank the Lord we were able to get the cap off and then a 19mm 6 point took the nut off. Get rid of these caps and locking lug on any car you own.
OOOH man I despise those. I had them on my focus and on my ladies grand cherokee . I replaced them all on the focus with solid steel ones , but not before I had to torch off one which messed up the magnesium wheel a little. So it isn't just dodge
Thanks for this video. I replaced a battery in a Dodge Journey for a family friend today. I had to remove the tire to access the battery 😒. One of the lug nuts was swollen. I was able to slide the socket halfway onto the nut and remove it. If not for this video, I would have probably put it back when I finished. I’m just a DIY guy. Instead, I pulled one from my car and used it (same threads and size). I already ordered a new one for my car, so no worries.
Banging sideways on the the stud like that is not good either. You should set socket over open jaws on a vice and smack nut out with a pin punch and hammer.
The rotor didn't look that bad actually – could have kept the original actually. That and 2mm isn't "almost metal to metal" – I've seen pads only .5mm left – now THAT was close to metal on metal, and EVEN then the rotors still looked fine – thankfully the pads wore evenly on that case though – otherwise it would have been metal on metal LOL.
I own a 2007 Dodge Magnum. I had the same issue. Replaced the wheel nuts with solid nuts in 2012. I believe every Dodge vehicle with these nuts, should have had them replaced with solid nuts, by a Recall.
The same thing happened with my Toyota Matrix nuts. It was such a pain in the ass getting them off. Luckily I got a whole new set without the stupid caps for like 40 bucks.
I don't think they swell because of rust underneath. My Ford had swollen lug nuts and there is No rust (california and garaged) at all anywhere on this car. I believe they swell from using the high impact gun on them too much. Most shops don't care about the recommended torque or using a torque wrench. I had to replace mine too.
used to work for AAA as a roadside tech, basically anything that doesn't require a tow. meaning i did the majority of flat tire calls… these things were the bane of my existence for those years.. got to the point where my boss told me if i saw these, call it in as a tow.
This is why, even though the tires haven't been off except for a rotation, I replaced my lugnuts on a 3yr old car with solid ones before they had a chance to do this. They are spline type, but I keep the key in the glovebox and let the techs know.
New nuts will make roadside tire changes far more fun…at least less curse filled. Customer may appreciate that and feel the money was well spent. Nothing like saving a few bucks only to find yourself f*cked later.
I've always been told that the 0.5mm intervals are for the chrome caps that break off, leaving a 21.5mm nut that was under the 22mm cap. Never thought to use em like this before, but I've also never encountered this problem.
Old parts guy here, my daughter's 2013 Dodge Dart has the same style, but with bolts. Before I had two tires put on the rear, I could get my 19mm chrome socket on the rears easily. After the car came home 9 of the 10 rears, I could not. I believe some shops are using worn out sockets and beating up the stainless nut covers.
Just dealt with this lug nut issue on my '06 Ram few weeks ago. Made the call to replace them. Had I known the cause and commonality of this issue, I would've made this one of the first repairs when I bought the truck.
Ford apparently has the same issue with lug nuts. I’ve asked the dealer why this happens and they can’t give me an answer. Thanks for your insight on this!
I remember when the chrysler lugnuts were out of stock even at the dealer. My service writer didnt want to break the bad news to a customer but it turns out she kept a full set in her glove box. How are those lug nuts not a recall?
My Scion XB had the same problem. I used a 7/8 6 point socket (22mm). not good on the nut, but you're changing it anyway

My Chevy Sonic had the same kind of caps on the nuts. They flew off. Thats how I found out.
I replaced them.
Dodges just seem to rust everywhere. I think Dodge thought people would forget about the rust when they changed the name to ram — lipstick on a pig!
Swollen nuts – not fun!
It's not just a Dodge problem. My Ford F-150 had the same problem.
It’s a ford problem too

I had the same problem on my ford went to a automotive parts store they thought I was some kind of nutter.
As Archer would say: "Thanks Dodge".
when I was at Swope …ALL THE SWOLLEN LUG NUTS!!!! it was horrible

Dodge nnononono it has been FIAT for years

man, its hard to have swollen nuts.
Banging sideways on the the stud like that is not good either. You should set socket over open jaws on a vice and smack nut out with a pin punch and hammer.
My Ford Escape has the same problem
Cause many don't and ir are not honest!
I assume 7/8 would be close I believe it's a little bigger than 22mm
My ford escape has the same nuts so….

Same lug nut problem on Fords. Just replaced 24 lug nuts @ $9.00 each.
I had the same problem with a Ford Mondeo ST, but always wondered what was causing it.
Swollen Truck Nuts? Ouch…

Nobody likes swollen nuts.

Isn't that socket through-hole?
Just power the nut off the stud, then free it from the socket with a suitable metal rod and your trusty hammer.

Have done just that on more than one occasion, in Southern California! It's just a lack of maintenance problem to deal with as it comes

"Swollen Nuts" are ALWAYS a bad thing!!
That Rotor is good for another 50,000 miles
That’s just standard anti theft

Ford has this too. Although fords problem is way worse because the caps actually do strip and flare out
I will be honest an say the swollen nut sounds like a cheap excuse but watching the video is great as its visual proof.
Thank you for explaining 😊
Toyota is just as bad. I have a jar of good lug nuts in oil that I have to get one or two out of everytime I change my wheels.

7/8” will help with that issue as well
I have a 2014 ford escape that had swollen nuts. I replaced them.
Tha F? thanks for showing me what happend to my GF's Focus Wheelnuts i wondered why the 22 didn't fit and the 23 felt like way too big .
Ford apparently has the same issue with lug nuts. I’ve asked the dealer why this happens and they can’t give me an answer. Thanks for your insight on this!
And, it isnt just dodge that has this issue! All manufacturers use the somewhere and they are all garbage!

Swollen nuts and a little G'n'R outro. I love what you're doing my man!
